Abstract:
AbstractWe study Klee’s measure problem — computing the volume of the union of n axis-parallel hyperrectangles in $$\mathbb {R}^d$$ R d — in the oblivious RAM (ORAM) setting. For this, we modify Chan’s algorithm [12] to guarantee memory access patterns and control flow independent of the input; this makes the resulting algorithm applicable to privacy-preserving computation over outsourced data and (secure) multi-party computation. For $$d = 2$$ d = 2 , we develop an oblivious version of Chan’s algorithm that runs in expected $$\mathcal {O}(n \log ^{5/3} n)$$ O ( n log 5 / 3 n ) time for perfect security or $$\mathcal {O}(n \log ^{3/2} n)$$ O ( n log 3 / 2 n ) time for computational security, thus improving over optimal general transformations. For $$d \ge 3$$ d ≥ 3 , we obtain an oblivious version with perfect security while maintaining the $$\mathcal {O}(n^{d/2})$$ O ( n d / 2 ) runtime, i. e., without any overhead.Generalizing our approach, we derive a technique to transform divide-and-conquer algorithms that rely on linear-scan processing into oblivious counterparts. As such, our results are of independent interest for geometric divide-and-conquer algorithms that maintain an order over the input. We apply our technique to two such algorithms and obtain efficient oblivious counterparts of algorithms for inversion counting and computing a closest pair in two dimensions.

Abstract:
AbstractMonte Carlo (MC) simulation using Crystal Ball® (CB) software is applied to life cycle inventory (LCI) modelling under uncertainty. Input data for all cases comes from the ENVIREE (ENVIronmentally friendly and efficient methods for extraction of Rare Earth Elements), i.e. from secondary sources eco-innovative project within the second ERA-NET ERA-MIN Joint Call Sustainable Supply of Raw Materials in Europe 2014. Case studies described the flotation tailings from the New Kankberg (Sweden) old gold mine and Covas (Portugal) old tungsten mine sent to re-processing/beneficiation for rare earth element (REE) recovery. In this study, we conduct the MC analysis using the CB software, which is associated with Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet model, used in order to assess uncertainty concerning cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd) and tungsten (W) taken from Covas flotation tailings, as well as Ce, La and Nd taken from New Kankberg flotation tailings, respectively. For the current study, lognormal distribution has been assigned to La, Ce, Nd and W. In the case of Covas, the weights of each selected Ce, La, Nd and W are 32 ppm, 16 ppm, 15 ppm and 1900 ppm, respectively, whereas in the case of New Kankberg, the weights of each selected Ce, La and Nd are 170 ppm, 90 ppm and 70 ppm, respectively. For the presented case, lognormal distribution has been assigned to Ce, La, Nd and W. The results obtained from the CB, after 10,000 runs, are presented in the form of frequency charts and summary statistics. Thanks to uncertainty analysis, a final result is obtained in the form of value range. The results of this study based on the real data, and obtained using MC simulation, are more reliable than those obtained from the deterministic approach, and they have the advantage that no normality is presumed.

This chapter discusses diachronic implications of the idea that there is a correlation between rich verbal agreement marking and verb movement, known as the Rich Agreement Hypothesis (RAH). Focusing on Koeneman and Zeijlstra’s (2014) recent work that aims at reinstating the RAH in its strongest biconditional form, it presents a set of diachronic case studies that challenge the expectation, fuelled by the strong RAH, that morphological and syntactic change should always go hand in hand. First, it is argued that Koeneman and Zeijlstra’s attempt to accommodate problematic cases (e.g. loss of verbal agreement morphology with delayed loss of verb movement) in terms of syntactic reanalysis runs into difficulties. In addition, the chapter presents data from Lithuanian and Cimbrian, where a change from SOV to SVO resulted in word-order patterns that violate the RAH, an observation that challenges both strong and weak versions of the RAH.

Chapter 4 begins with Teté Casuso in the aftermath of her husband’s death in Spain, when she founded Havana’s Asociación de Auxilio al Niño del Pueblo Español (Association of Aid to the Child of the Spanish People, or AANPE), the central organization of the Cuban campaign to assist Republican children during the conflict. Composed of children, women, and men from all over the island and Cuban communities abroad, the AANPE was part of the international campaign to aid Republican children but was nonetheless unmistakably Cuban. One of its most powerful organizing mechanisms was the argument that the blood of Spanish children ran through Cuban veins. Fostering this sense of familial and cultural solidarity and billing itself as a nonpartisan charity served the association well for much of the war, helping it to achieve impressive successes in collecting aid. That its pro-Republican stance was deemphasized indicates mobilization of a subtle solidarity, in which the cause was obscured to garner broader popular support.

It is still a matter of wonder how the Martians are able to slay men so swiftly and so silently. Many think that in some way they are able to generate an intense heat in a chamber of practically absolute non-conductivity. This intense heat they project in a parallel beam against any object they choose by means of a polished parabolic mirror of unknown composition—much as the parabolic mirror of a lighthouse projects a beam of light. But no one has absolutely proved these details. However it is done, it is certain that a beam of heat is the essence of the matter. Heat, and invisible, instead of visible light. Whatever is combustible flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs like water, it softens iron, cracks and melts glass, and when it falls upon water incontinently that explodes into steam.

In earlier days, people ran their applications or programs on a physical computer or a server. Cloud computing is a kind of Internet-based computing, where shared resources, data and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand. Many business organizations were moving towards cloud because it provides flexibility, disaster recovery, security, collaboration etc., Relational Databases ruled the IT Industries for almost 40 years. Limitations of relational database lead to the rise of cloud database. A cloud database is a database that typically runs on a cloud computing platform. Cloud databases are on the rise as more and more businesses look to capitalize on the advantages of cloud computing to power their business applications. Cloud databases are mainly used in data mining, data warehousing and business intelligence. This chapter deals with different types of cloud database and how database influence capacity planning.

However, a GFTB test rig for speed range over 100krpm has not been reported. At high speed operation, the gas film thickness of the GFTB is around a few microns which make

Abstract Methods for calculating the effects of periodic contact between the stators and rotors of large turbine generator systems are discussed. The case of periodic contact between a stator and part of the LP turbine rotor of a modern turbine generator is selected for study. The rotor is part of a train which includes, in order, HP, IP, and (one) LP turbines, each supported by two journal bearings solidly coupled to each other and to an alternator which is supported by three bearings, one of which carries little load and is popularly known as a steady bearing. The periodic contact is suppose
