The project of the following design thesis attempted to address some Industrial Design issues (or in this particular case with the design in a semi-industrial environment - railway station) and how such an approach can be incorporated into a city tissue which follows a different pattern of behavior, formally and functionally. An issue that could be looked upon is how the two different, but in this case related, functional areas could coexist, making a railway station part of a city, as it was until the beginning of the 20th century when the notion of mass production was introduced. There are, however, two ways the problem of connecting the two separate entities can be looked upon, which are also identical with the two parts that could be followed when attempting to find a solution. The first part, which is the part attempted to be solved in this project, has to do with the internal problems of the site (station area), how these problems are identified accordingly to the impact the city has on the site, and what solutions can be proposed in order the station to function more as a part of the city than as an entity of its own. After the completion of the first part, the second part of the problem should examine what impact the proposed intervention should have on the city itself, in order an exchange region to be created between the two entities. It should be added, however, that the two aspects can not be considered separately, and therefore when working on any of the two aspects one should consider the implications his or her decision will have on the following actions. The production process started from manufacture production in the 19th century, when railway stations were a part of cities, played major role in their development, and for the most part were also. constructed. After the Second World War railway stations become "servants" of the adopted mass production process, based on scale economies and resource allocation. Their scale changes and the behavior towards the cities that by then surrounded them had become more alien. After the 1980s, however, the new concepts of lean production, flexibility and differentiation brought back some of the characteristic of the manufacture era. Those characteristics are smaller, diversified facilities, tightly related to a particular region and easily adaptable to changes in the environment.

Full textThis dissertation analyzes the architecture of the industrial age undertaken in the cities of São João del-Rei and Juiz de Fora, during the period from 1875 to 1930. The objects of this research were rail stations, factories and labor villages built in these two cities that stood out in their contexts. They are: the rail buildings of the oeste de Minas railroad (1881) and some workers\' houses, in the city of São João del-Rei; the rail stations of D. Pedro II railroad: Mariano Procópio Station (1875) and Central Station (1877-1906), and some workers\' houses in the city of Juiz de Fora; the rail station of Leopoldina Railroad (1927) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Industrial São Joannense (1891) with its labor village at São João del-Rei; the Companhia Têxtil Bernardo Mascarenhas (1888) and its labor village (1925) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Industrial e Construtora Pantaleone Arcuri & Spinelli (1895) and its labor village (1910) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia de Fiação e Tecelagem Industrial Mineira (1885) at Juiz de Fora; the Companhia Fiação e Tecelagem Santa Cruz (1914) at Juiz de Fora; the Fábrica de Tecidos São João Evangelista (1924) and its company town at Juiz de Fora. The rail station architecture and industrial architecture were studied in terms of architectonic language, considering the implantation of the industrial buildings, rail stations and labor villages, the spatial organization and their configuration aspects. They were also studied in terms of urban insert, considering impacts that these buildings provoked in these cities at the time of their installation, as well as the analysis of their role in the current context. The presence of some tendencies was verified among the studied typologies, in terms of architectonic language and space organization, and also the predominance of the eclecticism language as architectural reference in these enterprises. The results clearly demonstrated the need of a more profound look on the questions that involve practices and politics of industrial heritage preservation in the cities of São João del-Rei and Juiz de Fora, emphasizing the incipient aspect of the researches about this subject in Minas Gerais.

The purpose of this thesis is to sociologically construct an analysis and interpretation of architecture as a symbolic expression of the Nation State. The genesis and characteristics of the Art Deco style are investigated, as well as its use as an aesthetic form suited to modelling the physiognomy of the machine of state. Art Deco predominated in buildings constructed to house the public administration, which had been reorganised and extended between 1930 and 1945 in Brazil. In particular, this research proposes to formulate a sociological interpretation of the imposing edifice of the Central do Brasil Railway Station, constructed in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1936 and 1943, which was designed in the Art Deco style. This architectural landmark is analyzed as a reference work of the modernizing thinking of the centralizing and authoritarian state that was emerging at the time.

Full textThe railway station is a hinge between the techniques related to transport and the places it serves. Today, it benefits from its image to mark new symbols in the city while ensuring the quality and originality of its spaces to adapt to changing lifestyles, temporalities and urban mobility. European cities are again perceived from their train station. Given their size and spatial organization, as well as the complexity of the relationships they establish with the surrounding neighborhoods, today's European railway stations are to be considered as places with high experimental potential which reflect the time technical advances and their translation into spaces of quality. This study is centered around the question of "Europe of high speed" and innovative and interesting examples of new buildings that symbolize it. lt aims to understand the most innovative programs in terms of interaction between technique, image and use. What are the lessons of their history and how are the stations integrated in their urban contexts ? And also what architectural techniques and programs couId be most suitable for the next evolution of transport for countries that have not yet invested in rail networks ?

The rapid development of digital technology recent years, parametric tools has been an available design tool not only for researcher but also for architect. Designer has more ability to deal with complex form by using digital technology. During 2009 to 2011, we(ABCD studio) successfully develops process for tectonic free-form surfaces by applying parametric tools into structure design. By using laser cutting machine to mass customize members and then construct through defined structural system, we can realize the virtual complex form into tangible object. A regular architecture design includes site analysis, planning and function, and then architect propose his own opinion through these context. Regarding the forms we built, generally we focus on “construction possibility”, “economical structure” or “Optimization” but forget the purpose and meaning which is brought out by form. It makes parametric product as an installation with few connections to the environment and people either. To keep the advantage of digital fabrication, this research establishes a design method with four steps which includes “Site/Program”, “Concept”, “Form finding” and “Digital fabrication” for designing DongShan railway station. The combination of “Architecture Design” and “Digital Fabrication” can clearly points out the architectural implication to parametric form. It also enlarges the ability of regular architecture design to operate complex modeling. The design is driven by “Write & Read” loop and “practical modeling”. In “Write”, it delivers the design intention by building physical model. In “Read”, the model will be checked if the issues have been replied or discovered with new issues. In “Write & Read” loop, the outcome of every milestone can be continuously accumulated until the final result. The conclusion will discuss if the design intention can be demonstrated by digital techniques. It introduces the possibility of digital technology as a representation of this generation.

The Existing Architecture of Wooden Railway Stations in Taiwan during Japanese-Colonial Period Abstract During the Japanese-colonial period, the buildings in Taiwan, which were characterized by richness in architectural styles, including classic European elements, colonial, Japanese and traditional Fukienese styles. And they were more complicated that those in Japan. Traditional Japanese wooden architecture was extensively used in building private houses, Shinto shrines, and temples. The existing architecture of wooden railway stations evolved from Japanese traditional private houses. The architect absorbed the Western elements, as classical European architectural styles were reflected into stations. Architectures that integrated Western styles with traditional Japanese styles, thus, became a distinct feature during Japanese era. This study was aimed at discussing and analyzing the style and form of 14 wooden railway stations during Japanese colonial period. These stations were Sheng-hsing, Tan-wen, Ta-shan, Hsin-pu, Jih-nan, Chui-fen, Hsiang-shan, Pao-an, Ching-tung, Chi-chi, New-Peitou, Chu-tien, Hou-pi, Lin-feng-ying . And the purpose of this study was listed as follows: 1.To discuss the architectural form of wooden railway stations during Japanese colonial period. 2.To compare the difference of style and form of wooden railway stations. 3.To find out the architectural characteristics of wooden railway stations. This research was conducted by History Analysis, Art Sociology and Style Modeling Study. The findings showed as follows: 1. In the aspect of similarities and dissimilarities of architectural form of stations, there are much more similar characteristics with the one which was constructed in the same era. 2. In the aspect of integrating the western architectural vocabulary, most stations were applied by English Weather-Boarding; less were applied by German Weather-Boarding ; and some stations were applied by Free-classic bull eye-like windows style. 3. The designers had already modified the patterns with integrating the western architectural characteristics, which were overall different from the original ones. 4. Many Japanese-style architecture were remained such as Japanese roof, Weather-Boarding, window lattice. 5. There were unsymmetrical architectural forms in flat surface, three- dimensional and space structure due to the demand of the function of transportation. 6. There are various styles with roof and wall. 7. The stations were constructed in the base of Japanese private houses, and there were more friendly humanistic spirit in the display of wooden materials and the style modeling.

The function of a working drawing is to communicate as a language. Made of drawing movements, it is the result of subjective creation. The destination of a working drawing might be sealed, stored in somewhere, waiting for next use, or forgotten gradually, after its function of communication is fulfilled. A working drawing gains a different meaning when it is unearthed again. Especially when certain type of architecture disappears, it provides the opportunity for the architecture to be reappeared. A working drawing is the records of information. It records the details which can not be perceived from reality, the thought of the author, and the memories of that age as well. The architectural working drawings of the Taiwan railway station (small and medium) buildings built during the Japanese-Colonization are the memories of that age. The purpose of this research is to decoding the memories by sorting, analyzing, and generalizing. First thing is to explore how do the designers of Japanese-Colonization age construct the language of professional communicaiton, the standards of sorting basic, and the syntax of generalizing drawings. The next is to investigate what are the implicit intention and thought, including how the architecture was thought, designed and constructed, the designers were looking for when working drawings were influenced by designers’ subjective creation. At last, the memories of that age, that is, factors that affect the working drawings under the constraints of the social system and regulations at that time, are what is going to examine. By sorting and analyzing fifteen set working drawings, there are three most significant findings in this research. 1. Standardization. – It is the most valuable concept of shaping Taiwan railway station small and medium buildings. 2. Construction materials. – It is the most vital factor that prompted the evolution of Taiwan railway station small and medium buildings. 3. The concept of standardization expands the meaning of working drawings. – It makes working drawings not only play the roles of directive medium and communication, but act as a designing template which incorporates the succeeding meaning of architectural knowledge and experience at the same time.
This thesis was developed in the ambit of the Master of Architecture and presents a project developed in two phases: firstly proposes the regeneration of an urban area with approximately 4 hectares, which corresponds to surrounding the railway area of Lagos, in the Algarve; at second proposes the rehabilitation and conversion of the passenger terminal building in the railway station (1922), closed since 20061, which since then is presented in a high state of degradation. It is intended to know the specifics of this project on a nature railway structure with historical and cultural value; and also research and develop the adaptation of a vacant building – to a new use as a possibility – for the recovery and reintegration of railway testimonies; and as a tool for urban renewal and to safeguard assets. This study also seeks to understand the evolution and the built expression of railway reality, focusing the Portuguese context. This research support a urban regeneration and conversion processes, carried out a descriptive and critical analysis in to four cases studies relating to buildings and/or industrial spaces adapted to new uses in order to explore the consequences of intervention in pre-existence and its urban and social environment, the constraints of the project and how influenced the final solution. Subsequently, it is determined the conditions of the project in question.
