Abstract:
Habitat loss and fragmentation increasingly impede wildlife movements that are essential for the long-term persistence of populations. Wildlife corridors facilitating movement have become a key component of conservation planning as a result. Models are increasingly used to identify likely corridors, but predictions are rarely validated against empirical data, resulting in uncertainty in whether corridors function as intended. This study asks: 1) What is the current state of our ability to predict corridors?, 2) How well do the most common models predict wildlife movement?, 3) Which method performs best?, and 4) How sensitive are models to parameterization decisions? I addressed these questions by synthesizing the corridor modeling literature, modeling migration paths of elk and dispersal paths of wolverines using the two most common corridor models (cost-distance and circuit theory models), validating predicted corridors against relocation data, and analyzing model sensitivity to parameterization. An additional question, 5) What drives habitat selection during long-distance migration and dispersal movements?, is also explored through these analyses. Key findings include: 1) Corridor modeling has progressed enormously in recent years, but model validation has been rare, 2) Corridor models are capable of offering valuable information, but their utility depends on conservation objectives, 3) Relative model performance depends on the match between model assumptions and focal species movement ecology, 4) Both models have similar sensitivity to model parameters, but spatial patterns of sensitivity are unpredictable for circuit theory models, and 5) The drivers of habitat selection during long-distance movements may be similar to those of primary habitat selection, but further research is needed. These studies constitute the most rigorous, comprehensive effort to validate corridor model predictions to date. They are expected to offer guidance for conservation scientists and practitioners as to reasonable expectations for corridor model performance, the importance of selecting methods appropriate to species movement ecology, and which decisions in the modeling process matter most. This work also highlights the need for further collection of data suitable for model validation, broader comparison of corridor models across diverse species and landscapes, and continued study of the ecology of long-distance movements. Abstract:

Abstract:
The horizontal wave drift force acting on a vertical floating column, without then with a heave plate, is considered. Computations are performed with a diffraction-radiation code and through the Morison and Rainey equations. Focus is on wave frequencies around the heave resonance where the drift force may be significant, even though the scattered wave-field being weak. It is found that the Morison equation overpredicts the drift force while Rainey equations perform rather well.

Abstract:
Abstract The simplified numerical models commonly employed for the pre-design of floaters for offshore wind only include linear wave loads, due to the higher computational effort required by second-order methods. Second-order hydrodynamics, on the other hand, need to be considered from an early stage, since they cause resonance of the moored structure. In the present study, we introduce a new method to include second-order inviscid hydrodynamic loads at a computational cost similar to linear loads. We compare the accelerated method to standard second-order diffraction theory and to second-order Rainey forcing with Sharma & Dean wave kinematics. The comparison, based on the loads and response of a spar floating wind turbine in surge and pitch, is carried out for three different sea states. We find that a good prediction of the second-order resonant response can be obtained with the accelerated method for medium and severe sea states, while the match is not as good for the mild sea state. The accelerated method is between 400 and 850 times faster than commonly used second-order approaches, for an 1-hour realization of a given sea state. This speed up allows the application of the load model in the floater pre-design, where efficient numerical models are the key to achieve optimal designs and the consequent reduction in the cost of the floater.

Abstract:
Confucius was born over 2,500 years ago and Confucius died at the age of 72 in 479 BCE (Rainey 2010: 21). Though he is called Confucius throughout most of the world, that name is actually the Latinized form of his Chinese name, Kong Fuzi, or Master Kung (Dorothy & Hoobler 2009: 10).Confucianism became the ascendant philosophical system of China for more than 2,000 years. It is a system of thought based on the teachings of Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 BCE (Dorothy & Hoobler 2009: 10). It has been imbued in every aspect of Chinese life which steeps through its history, state affairs and social life. Most importantly, its ethics aided immensely to shape society and remarkably impacted on daily lives. Consequently, still on any given day one can see hundreds and hundreds of people, most in family groups or tour groups visit Confucius’ birthplace in the Chinese city of Qufu which is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Confucianism elements also can be seen in Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese cultures due to the expansion of Chinese civilization. Thus, the majority of the three million tourists who visit Confucius’ birthplace within a year are from China, Korea or Japan. Even though in the past decades East Asia has had a blistering phase of modernization, one can still see that Chinese, Korean, or Japanese remnants contending with the ancient morals of Confucius. “Confucius, then, ranks with Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, and Siddhartha Gautama (better known as the Buddha), and Aristotle and Plato, as one of the founders of modern civilization” (Schuman 2015: 14).

Abstract:
Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become dominant in the task of single image rain removal. Most of current CNN methods, however, suffer from the problem of overfitting on one single synthetic dataset as they neglect the intrinsic prior of the physical properties of rain streaks. To address this issue, we propose a simple but effective prior - Fourier prior to improve the generalization ability of an image rain removal model. The Fourier prior is a kind of property of rainy images. It is based on a key observation of us - replacing the Fourier amplitude of rainy images with that of clean images greatly suppresses the synthetic and real-world rain streaks. This means the amplitude contains most of the rain streak information and the phase keeps the similar structures of the background. So it is natural for single image rain removal to process the amplitude and phase information of the rainy images separately. In this paper, we develop a two-stage model where the first stage restores the amplitude of rainy images to clean rain streaks, and the second stage restores the phase information to refine fine-grained background structures. Extensive experiments on synthetic rainy data demonstrate the power of Fourier prior. Moreover, when trained on synthetic data, a robust generalization ability to real-world images can also be obtained. The code will be publicly available at https://github.com/willinglucky/ExploringFourier-Prior-for-Single-Image-Rain-Removal.

Abstract:
Scene understanding in adverse weather conditions (e.g. rainy and foggy days) has drawn increasing attention, arising some specific benchmarks and algorithms. However, scene segmentation under rainy weather is still challenging and under-explored due to the following limitations on the datasets and methods: 1) Manually synthetic rainy samples with empirically settings and human subjective assumptions; 2) Limited rainy conditions, including the rain patterns, intensity, and degradation factors; 3) Separated training manners for image deraining and semantic segmentation. To break these limitations, we pioneer a real, comprehensive, and well-annotated scene understanding dataset under rainy weather, named Rainy WCity. It covers various rain patterns and their bring-in negative visual effects, covering wiper, droplet, reflection, refraction, shadow, windshield-blurring, etc. In addition, to alleviate dependence on paired training samples, we design an unsupervised contrastive learning network for real image deraining and the final rainy scene semantic segmentation via multi-task joint optimization. A comprehensive comparison analysis is also provided, which shows that scene understanding in rainy weather is a largely open problem. Finally, we summarize our general observations, identify open research challenges, and point out future directions.

Abstract:
Synthetic data-driven methods perform well on image rain removal task, but they still face many challenges in real rainfall scenarios due to the complexity and diversity of rainy patterns. In this paper, we propose a new generic paradigm for real image deraining from the perspective of synthesizing data covering more rainy patterns and constructing image rain removal networks with strong generalization performance. Firstly, instead of simply superimposing rain layers, we integrate various rainy patterns and design a phenomenal pipeline that incorporates multiple degradation types. Secondly, we construct a Patterns-aware Rain Removal Network (PRRN), which learns from both synthetic and real data simultaneously. In addition, to eliminate the inevitable distribution differences between synthetic and real data, we design a new Multi-representation Inter-domain Alignment Module (MIAM) in PRRN. By using multiple parallel submodules, MIAM achieves alignment of data domains in multiple feature subspaces. Based on several authoritative objective evaluation metrics, we successfully validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method in real scenarios through extensive experiments carried out on five challenging real datasets.

Abstract:
People used to take the weather and climate for granted -butnot anymore! They are both now studied intensively by scientists and discussed by celebrities and newscasters as they become increasingly important to our own daily lives. Every place on Earth has a climate. A climate includes factors that remain fairly constant for at least 30 years, such as temperature, humidity, the amount of water present in the air, and rainfall. The region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is called the intertropical (or equatorial) region. This is Earth's "waist" where there are no seasons. The weather tends to remain constant throughout the year. When discussing areas in these regions, instead of referring to seasonal weather changes, we might refer to them as having a rainy climate, meaning it rains frequently all year long. The weather in countries above and below the intertropical region are affected by seasons. For example, these climates may be rainy in the winter and dry in the summer. Weather refers to short-term conditions in a particular area that can quickly change, sometimes within minutes. Climate, however, does not normally change at a rapid pace. In fact, it can take years, decades, or even longer before changes in the climate can be felt.
