In his Essays the philosopher and writer Michel de Montaigne argued, that “no propositions astonish me, no belief offends me, though never so contrary to my own; there is no so frivolous and extravagant fancy that does not seem to me suitable to the production of human wit. We, who deprive our judgment of the right of determining, look indifferently upon the diverse opinions, and if we incline not our judgment to them, yet we easily give them the hearing. Among the themes that are ever present in her texts and of particular interest to readers is her preoccupation with the past. The text of Mircea Eliade is important to the theoretical framework of the following thesis. His postulating that human beings constantly repeat their past to find meaning to their lives is capital to my analysis of Gabrielle Roy's texts. Abstract:
In this chapter, the author problematises and challenges the mantra of productivity as an occupational raison d'etre. She argues that equating an effective worker with their capacity for productive output over meaningful outcome undermines employee well-being and human-centred values. She explores the impact of neoliberalism on work and the individualisation of the worker and argues that productivity has gained the status of a value. Lastly, the author outlines a range of solutions in the second part of the chapter and explores the rise of recent socio-political movements which redefine rest and contemplative practices as tools of rebellion against the ruthless neoliberal push for productivity.

Abstract:
Abstract The visitor to Mantua may find it hard to believe how great was Monteverdi's success. The town today seems rather forlorn, its huge palace a museum, its present raison d'etre a market for the rich countryside by which it is surrounded. In the later years of the sixteenth century it was very different. Although never destined to be one of the greatest cities of Europe, Mantua was no mere provincial centre. The house of Gonzaga had brought the city to a fine prosperity, and encouraged by a succession of dukes who loved all the outward signs of richness, artists and musicians, actors and poets were glad to accept the bountiful patronage they were offered. Rubens, Tasso and Guarini are only three among many famous names in letters and painting that we find associated with the Mantuan court; and to these can be added a group of musicians just as distinguished.

Full text
Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides a background and an overview of commodities trading. The trade of commodities is the earliest and most basic form of commerce. A central tenet in economics theory, the act of trade or ‘exchange’ of a commodity occurs at the intersection of supply and demand and also where the price or exchange rate is determined. Since commodity prices change based on myriad factors, the volatility of commodities prices is the raison d'etre of why derivatives developed. Derivative markets perform two essential functions: price discovery and hedging. Price discovery is important because it allows market participants to value their financial assets without actually having to sell those items. Hedging is also important because it allows a market participant to offset risks from exposure to financial instruments in its portfolio or that it anticipates buying in the future. The chapter then looks at the rationale for the regulation of trading in commodities-related financial instruments as well as the impact of Brexit on the regulation of commodities trading in Europe.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the innovative panoply of views on the nature of political authority, and visions of the sultanate as its form of embodiment. Virtually every author writing on rulership felt it necessary first to address the question of what political authority really was, its raison d'etre and status among humanity, how it was acquired or lost, the nature of the ruler and his morality, and historical models of rulership. No author doubted the consensus-confirmed view that the sultanate was the highest rank a human being could attain, but they took divergent paths in defining its nature, scope, and entangled boundaries. A common attitude was to reconcile between various historical and theoretical models of political authority including philosopher-kingship, prophethood, and imamate by defining them in ways compatible with their own visions of rulership. Elaborating on a particular vision of rulership almost always involved an explanation of human nature, human beings' existential status, and the purpose of life. There is a strong correlation between one's perception of human nature and vision of ideal rulership.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews Michael Stanislawski's Tsar Nicholas I and the Jews (1983). Michael Stanislawski's study is a bold, often provocative attempt to penetrate the self-serving legends of the period 1825–1855 to discover the true nature of Russian Jewish society and its crucial relationship with the regime of Tsar Nicholas I. His achievement in the exercise of historiographical re-evaluation is impressive, exhibiting a richness of content which is taxing to encapsulate in summary. His careful examination of the policy of the tsarist government towards its Jewish population certainly has the effect of exploding a variety of established myths. Rather than simply assuming that the administration was oppressively and irredeemably anti-semitic, Stanislawski sets out to reveal the precise dynamics of tsarist Jewish policy, eventually reaching the conclusion that its attitude was less anti-semitic than dictated by ‘a myopic perception of raison d'etat’.

Gérard Yao, Kouamé. "Les seuils du théâtre." In D'un seuil à l'autre. Editions des archives contemporaines, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.17184/eac.771.

Full text
