Abstract:
Introduction: Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) breeds, raises, and trains dogs to serve as guides for people with visual impairments (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision). Their puppy raising program enlists volunteers to foster puppies for a year or more, providing socialization, basic skills training, and comfort, so they will grow into confident dogs. The volunteers must ultimately return these dogs to Yorktown Heights, New York, to begin training. For raisers, the emotional toll of this parting can be great. Methods: Utilizing the 2017 GEB Puppy Raiser Survey data, this study analyzed factors that might affect emotional grief and the decision to continue to raise puppies. Cross-tabulation and ordinal regression analyses examined the associations of puppy raiser demographics (i.e., gender, age, marital status, and employment), organizational integration (i.e., number of dogs raised for GEB, perceptions on how well GEB supports raisers in returning a dog, belief that they are part of the GEB community, and formation of friendships), and goal attainment (perceptions on how well GEB communicated progress in training, whether they raised a dog accepted for guide training, and whether they attended a graduation ceremony) with self-reported emotional difficulty, recovery time, and likelihood of raising another puppy. Results: Although the demographics of the raiser had minimal effect on emotional difficulty, recovery time, and likelihood of raising again, factors that measured organization integration and goal attainment were associated with grief and continued participation. Discussion: Raiser demographics are not strong predictors of grief and continued raising; however, a welcoming organization that communicates effectively will inspire volunteers’ commitment. Implications: With a growing need for assistance dogs and puppy raisers, identifying and addressing the challenges that these volunteers face is critical if skilled and dedicated raisers are to be recruited and retained.

Abstract:
Modern medical technologies raise the problems of the relationship between man and society, medical workers and patients. The ethical problems of medical technologies are nowhere so clearly defi ned as in the established practices of organ donation and transplantation. The project of a head transplant, widely represented in the media recently, raises a number of critical questions to the medical community. The article explores the ethical issues raised by the presentation in the media sphere the project of human head transplantation and risks for current transplant practice.

Abstract:
Abstract This article raises the question about how definitions of religion and violence can be understood as links to the context in which they are formulated. The focus is on the context of academic learning. Understanding a definition as a micro-narrative that reflects the cultural ‘archive’, the author uses two academic contexts (i.e. Utrecht, The Netherlands and Jakarta, Indonesia) to show how religion and violence are differently understood. These differences are taken as significant information for understanding how the topic of ‘religion and violence’ is related to cultural understandings of the place of religion in society. The question is raised how ‘narrative learning’ can help as a strategy to raise awareness about the preconditioning of (academic) definitions of ‘religion and violence’.

Abstract:
The history of means of payment is taking new shape during the 2010:th decade andstarts on a new chapter. The next step in the monetary evolution will take place oncevirtual currencies become more frequently used. The virtual currency called Bitcoinwas introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto in the year of 2009 and is a digital currency, which means that it is not connected to a physical good with a forensic purpose. When a new mean of payment is introduced fundamental factors regarding theacceptance of society and utilization becomes a financial puzzle. How can it be thatindividuals exchange physical goods for a paper bill, a coin or just somethingelectronic? To possess Bitcoin and to use new means of payment on a frequent basisbring risks many users are not familiar with. Organizations and consumers whomopen up their gates to new means of payment need to gain knowledge ofconsequences both positive and negative. The purpose of this study is to highlight theaforementioned risks, which arise from the fact that new means of payment likeBitcoin is introduced. The research issue regarding which risks may arise frompossession and usage of virtual currencies are concluded by a qualitative analysisresearch containing mostly scientific articles. Our study depicts that the risksassociated with virtual currencies like Bitcoin, are all somehow related to the trust forthe specific mean of payment. Most risks arise from actually possessing a Bitcoin andhence not as much related to the technological element.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is limited to pure reason and its interaction with the question of infinity as defined from a mathematical, philosophical; and religious point of view. The thesis aims at showing that the various rational principles (identity, non contradiction. . . ) come down to the principle of symetry which is the operating version of the principle of identity. It shows that the various rationalities which refer to various types of existence (actual, constructive, logical. . . ) can come down to a single one, the most general, as these existences are included. So a weaker logic than classical logic is put forward, able to deal with infinite and impredicative definitions with their paradoxes. Cantor's theorem and the scale of infinite numbers are contested. Infinity, owing to the absence of limits, is a weaker notion than finity. So both metaphysical infinite and mathematical infinite must be approached with that same logic. Thus reason can use an open formalism, providing a broader coherence to mathematics and which includes, as particular cases, the other rational theories. It also includes infinity which then appears as a unitary pole structuring thought

Abstract:
L'age de raison is the time of maturity, the time of freedom for and to, in the epoch of reason. So we have to elucidate the identity and the difference between the author of the critique of pure reason and the ideal of the wise man. To teach the doctrine of highest good (summum bonum : supremum and consummatum) the critical philosopher travels the dogmatic meaning of the concepts of i, world and god, by the criticist-philosophical concept of thing-in-itself. There is no critical theory of the thing-in-itself, but the argument of jacobi reduces it excessively to the only category of causality. We have to elucidate all the possible meanings of the thing-in-itself, by re-reading the critical texts, enter into all the details, and by following the development of each category. First we show the impossibility of a scholar reading of the texts in the french translations. Then we show a difference between the systematical requirement of the inscribeds of the critical philosophy and the textual reality of the kantians writings : the i, the world and god are not always thought, in the writings, respectively by the category of substance, causality and communauty. We try to restaure the critical systematicity, by rectifying some non-critical kantian writings, and by developing systematically the inscribeds, particulary those of communauty. And we try to maintain the propaedeutic caractere of the critique of aesthetic judgement of taste, by moving the analysis of the critique of teleological judgement at their respective places on the system - and by not privileging the analytic of sublime. In the second part we examine the statute of the professor of wisdom at the critical epoch of the destruction of the ontology, by difference with the statute of the scholastic professor : aristotle and aquinas

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, we will propose an interpretation of the psychoanalytic references in the works of Adorno and Horkheimer, by starting from the way they are used in an unexpected, and yet central, field: the critique of rationality. Especially in Dialectics of Enlightenment, Adorno and Horkheimer affirm that reason, a concept that is both central and structuring to the modern capitalist society, comes into conflit with itself to the point of its self-destruction, which should be understood as a passage to madness. We intend to defend that this affirmation can be understood, by having recourse to psychoanalysis, in a non-metaphorical manner, starting from a double reading, both genetic and micrologic, of their writings. We situate the genesis of the intersection between psychoanalysis and the critique of rationality in their early works, when they were dealing with the relationship between psychology and the theory of knowledge, at first in a neo-Kantian perspective, then within the framework of the program of interdisciplinary research in the thirties. This precocious intersection led them to become interested as much in the unconscious part which works through the process of knowledge, as in the logic of phenomena which are apparently the most irrational. We therefore interpret their works from the thirties and forties as the unveiling of a conjunction of specific forms of social rationalization with the rising of particularly irrational phenomena, especially related to the emergence of fascism. This conjunction then leads to the psychoanalytical thematisation of reason’s self destruction. Our thesis is that by disclosing this singular critical paradigm – which links together the psychoanalytical approach, the critique of reason, and the theory of knowledge – the function attributed to psychoanalysis by these authors can be revealed in a global and coherent fashion: accounting for unreason as an effect of the contradictory logic that the modern capitalist society establishes between nature and history. We can therefore conclude our work by analyzing on what condition a dialectical and critical theory of knowledge is likely to avoid the pitfall that psychoanalysis has allowed to identify at the social level, i.e. the reduction of the relation between history and nature to a relation of domination. In this way, the critical potentials of this paradigm within the framework of contemporary debates on the pathologies of reason can be brought to light

Abstract:
In this Steam Injected Gas turbine cycle, maximum steam is raised with exhaust heat at the highest practical pressure for expansion in a back pressure steam turbine before injection into the gas turbine combustor. Additional steam is raised at lower pressure and injected into the combustor, to effect more complete recovery of heat. The back pressure steam turbine drives a topping air compressor which raises the gas cycle pressure ratio. This allows the standard gas turbine blading to accommodate the additional steam flow because of the higher pressure and density of the gas.
