Abstract:
This study explores the Mughal conquest of Kashmir (tasḵẖīr-i-kashmīr) through the region’s phased openings rather than a singular watershed event signalling either a climactic loss of independence or ushering in a golden age. Before 1585–89, there were two decades of patronage, diplomacy, and a steady breaching of the valley’s defences. When Mughal dominion was established, sections of the local aristocracy figured prominently as part of the new dispensation of power, while others continued to offer resistance. An analysis of imperial and local Perso-Sanskrit narratives of the conquest yields

Abstract:
Abstract The historian Jonarāja (Kashmir, fifteenth century) is known mainly for his chronicle of the kings of Kashmir, the Dvitīyā Rājataraṅginī, a continuation of Kalhaṇa’s chronicle up to the Muslim Sultanate of Zayin al-’Ābidīn (r. 1419/20–1470). However, Jonarāja also authored the commentaries of three court poems (mahākāvyas), namely Bhāravi’s Kirātārjunīya, Maṅkha’s Śrīkaṇṭhacarita, and Janaka’s Pṛthvīrājavijaya. The present article aims at providing a closer look at Jonarāja’s commentarial strategies, focusing on four cantos (4, 5, 6, and 17) of the Śrīkaṇṭhacarita. First, some example

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 3 critically examines the major narrative theme of the Rājataraṅgiṇī. Like the two epics it explores a kṣatriya milieu inasmuch as the work chronicles the history of the kings and queens of the Kashmir Valley. I argue, however—against the prevailing scholarly opinion—that the Rājataraṅgiṇī chronicles the lives of Kashmir’s rulers not to recommend to its (largely Brahminical) audience world renunciation in a sentiment of “resignation” but to counsel that same Brahminical audience to work productively to model and counsel dharmic action, so as to effect the same in the lives of

Abstract:
Chapter 6 examines the socio-historical practicalities of a monarch participating in the Tantric sphere. The twelfth-century chronicle Rājataraṅgiṇī offers a useful guide. Its narratives demonstrate how practitioners who have shed caste identity through initiation still retain it in the social world. It focuses largely on monarchs, disapproving of their participation in Tantric rites. The chapter discusses literary evidence that demonstrates the widespread agreement on what qualifies as prohibited and the penalties for transgressions. It discusses evidence of royal patronage before turning to
