Abstract:
Although a method for the optimal design of ram pump systems using a pump of given size now exists, there is no simple procedure for selecting the proper size of pump to provide a specific duty. This Technical Note shows how pump size may be determined from the required output power. The finding is supported by existing results and further tests on a 53 mm Wilcox pump. Examples are given to illustrate the sizing of small to medium pumps. A cost analysis indicates that economy of scale applies to ram pumps and that the use of multiple pumps is not cost effective unless low drive heads have to be utilized.

Abstract:
Automatic hydraulic ram pumps are environmentally friendly devices using a renewable energy resource to pump water for domestic or agricultural use. Since being superseded by pumps using electrical or fossil fuel energy nearly a century ago, they are now coming back into favour in many parts of the developing world. In the past, hydraulic ram pumps have been designed by rules-of-thumb having limited scientific basis. On-site adjustment has been used in the hope of rectifying the inevitable shortcomings of this process and ideal performance is rarely achieved. The present proposal for optimum design allows relevant system parameters (including the beat frequency) to be selected prior to installation. The paper shows how a ram pump system may be designed using two simple equations containing empirical factors dependent upon ram size, delivery head, material and wall thickness of the drive pipe and the configuration of the impulse valve. The design method is illustrated with reference to a number of existing tests. New experimental results for a 53 mm ram with five different impulse valve strokes are also presented.

Abstract:
The hydraulic ram pump was invented over 200 years ago but became obsolete with the availability of mains water. Ram pumps make use of a renewable energy resource and are environmentally friendly. They are particularly appropriate for use in the developing world as their construction is basic and robust and they are inexpensive and easy to install and maintain. Unfortunately, simple rational design procedures applicable to any size of pump are not available. The paper analyses the behavior of ram pumps under zero recoil conditions from which three nondimensional design relationships, applicable at any delivery head, are derived for beat frequency, quantity delivered, and source capacity in terms of the independent variables. These relationships incorporate constants consistent with existing experimental results. Recommendations are given for the maximum length of drive pipe which supersede traditional rules-of-thumb for the ratios L/D and L/H. The procedure allows selection of all system parameters, including the drive pipe length, for a set of homologous ram pumps.

Abstract:
The hydraulic ram pump was invented over 200 years ago but became obsolete with the general availability of mains water. It is used for pumping surface water and is powered by the potential energy of the supply. Ram pumps are particularly appropriate for use in remote regions of the developing world as their construction is basic and robust and they are inexpensive and easy to install and maintain. A rational design procedure applicable to any ram pump is described in this paper. The method is based on the three non-dimensional relationships that have been found to govern ram pump behaviour. The relationships express beat frequency, quantity delivered and source capacity in terms of the independent variables. By assigning upper and lower bounds to the critical velocity in the drive pipe, it is possible to derive three characteristic pump parameters from which the dependent variables may be determined directly. These parameters all take the same numerical values within a feasible design space. The design method has been confirmed using the results of existing experiments. A number of examples are given which illustrate the ease and rapidity of the procedure.

Abstract:
Hydraulic ram pumps are currently of interest because they make use of a renewable energy resource and are environmentally friendly. Ram pumps are particularly appropriate for use in the developing world as their construction is basic and robust and they are inexpensive and easy to install and maintain. Numerous attempts to analyse the complex behaviour of a ram pump system have been made in the past, but few have been successfully translated into simple design procedures and none have resulted in a general method for a ram pump of any size. The analytical approach adopted in the present paper assumes constant friction loss in the drive pipe during acceleration and concentrates on zero recoil conditions at which optimum pump performance occurs. Four simple and general design equations are derived which incorporate conservative assumptions for the critical velocity in the drive pipe and the effect of system losses. Design examples are given and design predictions compared with new and existing test results. Conclusions are drawn regarding the relevance of traditional drive pipe length–drive pipe diameter (L/D) and drive pipe length–supply head (L/H) ratios.

Abstract:
Hydraulic ram pumps have been implemented and installed mainly in hilly or remote area where they are facing public electrical supply problem. Hydraulic ram pumps are mechanical pumps that utilize the increased water hammer due to the sudden shutdown mechanism of the waste valve. Therefore, the hydraulic ram pump is equipped with air vessel to reduce the pulsation of the pumping water flow. Within a certain period of hydraulic ram pump operation, the amount of air present in the air vessel will continue to decrease. In order to replace the air volume in the air vessel, the hydraulic ram pump is equipped with a snifter-valve. However, in its implementation, this valve is only a hole with a diameter of 1 ÷ 2 mm at a distance of about 2 cm below the delivery valve on the body of the hydraulic ram pump. However, there has not been any reference for determining the diameter of the snifter-valve hole yet. Therefore, in this study, works carried out for investigating the magnitude of the increased pressure that occurs in the air vessel of hydram pump. In this study, a hydraulic ram pump equipped with a snifter-valve with various orifice diameters of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mm. The results show that for the hydraulic ram pump model with 1¼ inch diameter of the drive pipe that tested, the incrising pressure in the air vessel is about 0.4 up to 0.5 bar. The snifter-valve with 1.5 mm orifice diameter generates the highest incrising pressure of water hammer pressure in the air vessel, therefore, it gives the maximum work in the hydraulic ram pump.

Hydraulic ram pump is one of the oldest mechanical devices used for water lifting. A hydraulic ram pump has two moving parts which are the waste valve and delivery valve. As a lot of studies had been carried out investigating parameters possibly affecting the performance of a hydraulic ram pump, this study aimed to design and fabricate a modified waste valve for a hydraulic ram pump with parts made from locally available off-the-shelf materials. Results revealed that varying the height of the waste valve’s stroke significantly affected the relivery flow rate thus affecting its overall all efficiency.

This paper analyses the influence of geometric parameter on the flow pulsation, calculates its flow pulsation coefficient theoretically, then takes account of the influence of leakage rate on flow pulsation of the plunger pumps, and simulates 5-ram pump to nine-ram pump with its actual parameters to calculate its instantaneous delivery and autual flow pulsation coefficient . The conclusion can be drawn that its actual flow pulse coefficient considering leakage flow is obviously larger than theoretical instantaneous delivery, so we should minimize the leakage.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to develop a small-capacity power generator that may be used as an alternative energy source for home use, particularly in rural regions. The hydraulic ram pump was included in the design as a critical component for extending the duration of power production by turbines and generators, which was achieved via innovative engineering. During the manufacturing of hydraulic ram pumps, there are three test variants, which are comprised of the intake pipe length (2.6m), the output pipe height (2.5m, 3.2m, and 3.7m), and the outlet pipe diameter (3/4") of each pump. As a consequence of these findings, the average maximum performance of the hydroelectric power plant with the hydraulic ram pump system in this research was achieved at a reservoir height of 2.7 (m), with a voltage resulting in 7.3 (volts) (volts). With a turbine diameter of 46 cm, an intake pipe diameter of 3/4 cm, and a turbine inlet discharge of 7.2 liters per minute, the generator can produce electrical energy to the tune of 7.3 kilowatt hours (volts).

Abstract:
Many existing deep-well water pumping technologies that are affordable to developing world smallholders suffer from reliability issues, low efficiency and/or expensive running costs. The Double-Acting Hydraulic Ram Pump (DAHR) has the potential to address these problems. An evolution of the classic hydraulic ram pump that converts kinetic energy from free-flowing water sources into a reduced flow at a much higher head, the DAHR contains virtually no moving parts or dynamic seals. The result is a deep-lift technology that can be both highly efficient and extremely reliable. This thesis investigates the potential of the DAHR, taking an initial proof-of-concept rig to a design that is ready for outdoor field trials. The beta prototype design process has been aided considerably by the development of a suite of numerical models. Like the conventional hydraulic ram, the DAHR has clearly defined acceleration and delivery phases either side of an impact event. The fluid motion during acceleration is modelled using a 1D lumped element approach whereas the delivery phase modelling is based on the shock equations for both compression and rarefaction waves. Unlike the conventional hydraulic ram, the DAHR makes full use of the kinetic energy downstream of the impact. The numerical results facilitate the selection of drive pipe diameter, inlet/delivery valves and the choice of pipe material via the resulting sound speed. A 15 m tall test facility housed within a three storey public stairwell was set up to help simulate pumping from deep underground. The DAHR sitting in a tank at the bottom would lift water to the top of the stairwell before it was returned under gravity to complete the circuit. The driving power input to create the low pressure, high volume oscillatory flow within the DAHR U-tube is provided by two custom-made pneumatic fluidynes. The data acquired over several weeks of testing with three different plastic drive pipe materials required an automated post-processing routine capable of analysing DAHR performance impact-by-impact. Computed efficiencies of up to 75 percent were achieved while pumping 350 L/h at 32 m head. Experimental observations also showed good agreement with numerical modelling. A single-acting design, capable of fitting down a smaller borehole, was considered as an alternative way forward. A further prototype, with the second drive pipe replaced by a gas spring, was designed, built and tested in the same facility. The prototype proved substantially more difficult to control and estimated efficiency was approximately half that of the DAHR validating the original double-acting approach.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was primarily to promote the wider deployment of the hydraulic ram pump, and secondarily to provide the technical input into a programme aimed at using hydraulic ram pump technologies for third world development. Hitherto hydraulic ram pump technologies have been restricted by poor understanding of operational parameters, poor performance prediction, and poor design of pumps and installations. In pursuit of greater understanding the work utilised a computer simulation developed by the author as part of a previous research programme. This simulation was then greatly enhanced to provide improved accuracy and functionality. The enhanced simulation was then used to provide significant insight into the operation of a hydraulic ram pump and subsequently used to identify design improvements for the hydraulic ram pump. The simulation was used to investigate operational restrictions on the hydraulic ram, and was ultimately use to develop a model of hydraulic ram pump operation. The model of operation developed by the use of the simulation was computerised and used to predict the performance of hydraulic ram pump installations. This computerised model was then used to provide the most comprehensive design charts yet created for hydraulic ram pump, and was also used in the investigation of operational limits for the device. The study represents: the development of the first detailed simulation of the hydraulic ram pump and the most significant insight to date into the detail of operation of a hydraulic ram pump. The result of the study is the provision of an accurate method of pump calibration, an accurate method of pump performance prediction, and the first comprehensive design charts to be produced for the hydraulic ram pump.

Abstract:
This study consists of the development of a ram pump, which will allow the pumping of water without the need of external energy sources. It is considered an analysis of interest since, once it is finished; it can be applied in reality improving and facilitating different activities related to agriculture and health. Previous studies have been made related to the ram pump; however, in this case, it is intended to understand the system that has been built in the laboratory in order to find the best combination of parameters that will lead to obtain the highest possible efficiency.  The study will be carried out by studying scientific literature and by experimenting in the laboratory. Encompassing the experimental and literary field, it is expected to understand perfectly the advantages and disadvantages of the ram pump in order to determine if it is worth it to install in certain places. After the study, the most favourable parameters for the operation of the Bruzaholms Bruk pump have been obtained. It has been found that the use of a longer drive pipe favours the operation of the system, as it is possible to obtain a higher efficiency, although it must be taken into account that the mentioned length needs to be controlled, as it could reduce the working rhythm of the pump. It has also been seen that the pump gives better results if the impulse valve is completely opened. Finally, it has been proven that, as long as the height difference between the two tanks is enough, increasing the height of the water source will favour the operation of the system.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on setting the range and efficiency of a water ram pump through experimental measurements in a laboratory. The measurements were carried out on three different constructions of water ram pump, each of the designed and assembled by the author of this thesis himself, to find out whether the weight on the pulsating valve has an influence on the water ram pump efficiency. Further on this thesis aims at the comparison of up to now methods of water transport arrangement used at a summer camp and the usage of the water ram pump and its advantages. The principal of water ram pump originates in hydraulic impact that is being precisely described in a great detail as well. On of the chapters even includes the placement manual for the water ram pump and its overall assembly and connexion. Because the presence of floating debris is inevitable, this thesis also deals with the possibility to solve the incoming water impurities by adding an inflow gating to prevent such problem. This inflow gating has only been designed in a Flow 3D programme to introduce the idea and functions.

Abstract:
To characterise the activity of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ after myocardial infarction the left coronary artery of 10-15 week old male rats was ligated; six weeks later function and expression of the SR Ca2+-pump ATPase (SERCA2a) transport in the surviving myocardium was investigated. Part of the animals were treated with the carnithin palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1) inhibitor etomoxir (8mg/kg/d for six weeks) to decrease the oxidation of long chain fatty acids. Due to the drug-induced shift from fatty acid to carbohydrate utilization an attenuated myocardial dysfunction and an improved SR Ca2+ handling homeostasis in the surviving myocardium could be expected. The etomoxir treated rats showed a decreased infarct size six weeks after coronary ligation. Due to CPT-1 inhibition a significant biventricular hypertrophy was observed. In addition, the treatment normalized elevated LVEDP and improved contractility. Compared to sham-operated controls treatment with etomoxir caused an enhanced SR Ca2+ uptake activity that correlated with increased immunoreactive SR Ca2+-ATPase levels. The results suggest that chronic inhibition of CPT-1 after myocardial infarction improves the metabolism of reversible damaged tissue. It appears that increased oxidation of glucose and inhibition of long chain fatty acid oxidation is responsible for this effect. Limitation of the infarct size induces improvement of haemodynamic parameters, increases SR Ca2+ uptake and protein levels of SERCA2a. Further studies are required to find out whether etomoxir is able to delay the development of congestive heart failure in humans and whether it could decrease mortality in patients after myocardial infarction.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the main bacterial agents that may cause infections related to health care assistance. K. pneumoniae frequently carries the resistance gene K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC). Currently, tigecycline can be considered one of the last therapeutic options for KPC, but reports of tigecycline-resistant KPC isolates are on the rise, being indicated as most common mechanism the increased AcrAB-TolC efflux pump system expression. However, molecular tigecycline resistance mechanisms associated to AcrAB-TolC still remains obscure. Thus, the main goal of this study was to verify if tigecycline resistance can be related to the presence of mutations in the regulatory genes of AcrAB-TolC, AcrR and RamR. Therefore, 32 K. pneumoniae isolates were used, identification and antibiogram performed using Vitek 2 systems. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were confirmed using E-test. Primers were designed in order to verify mutations within AcrR and RamR genes. PCR analysis showed that the mutations found within these genes were transversions (94% for AcrR and 90% for RamR) and transitions (6% for AcrR and 10% for RamR). Nevertheless among the mutations, no distinction between tigecycline susceptible and resistant isolates was found. Some of the transversions caused change in the amino acid encoding 6 in AcrR and 15 in RamR. Presence of these types of mutations evaluation can be seen as the first bacterial resistance study step, as it may be caused by oxidative damage for bacterial DNA, frequently caused by antibiotic selective pressure. Tigecycline resistance found in this study`s clinical isolates may be associated to alterations in another genes that can trigger mechanisms associated to this antibiotic.

Abstract:
During a senior level thermal system design class given at York College of Pennsylvania, a customer-based design project has been implemented. This project provides the students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they learned in class and allows them to think creatively to achieve the given task. For this project, students are required to prepare a project proposal based on the needs of the customer and deliver a written report at the end of the semester. The main purpose of the project is to design an interactive museum display to show the working principle of a ram pump for the York County Heritage Trust Museum. The hydraulic ram pump utilizes the power of flowing water to operate without the use of electricity. The project requires students to apply energy and cost analysis. This paper presents the details of the design requirements, procedures and the final design. Examples of student work and the assessment of the work are also provided.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydraulic ram pump offers electricity-free, low-cost and reliable way to supply water to a higher elevation. The goal of this study was to modify the existing hydraulic ram pump system to improve its overall performance. In the present work, the effects of adding a second drive pipe to a common pressure chamber of the existing ram pump unit were studied. Notably, the other components remained the same throughout all experiments. It was hypothesized that the addition of second drive pipe should increase the amount of water delivered by the pump and overall yield a better result in terms of pump’s volumetric efficiency and energy efficiency. Building on previous findings, all testing conducted during our research was completed using an optimal drive pipe inclination angle of 67.5°, with a pipe length of 4.8 ft, and a delivery pipe height of 10′8″. Using these initial conditions, and a single drive pipe, resulted in a maximum efficiency of 8%. Test runs with an additional drive pipe of the same length and inclination and with modifying the waste and check valve showed a considerable increase in the pump’s efficiency, up to 22%. Remarkably, the delivery flow rate increased by as much as 340%.
