Abstract:
Osteoporotic fractures are major causes of suffering and death. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the standard of care for diagnosis (T-score ≤ –2.5) of osteoporosis. Prevention of fractures requires addressing bone and muscle strength and balance. Physical exercise, good nutrition (fruits, vegetables, adequate calcium), adequate vitamin intake (C, D, and K), tobacco cessation, and no more than moderate alcohol intake enhance bone health and decrease fracture risk. Long-term treatment with glucocorticoids, certain drugs used in breast or prostate cancer treatment, and proton pump inhibitors used for gastroesophageal reflux disease may increase the risk for osteoporosis. Pharmacologically, bisphosphonates are the mainstay of osteoporosis treatment.

Abstract:
The right atrium (RA) is located on the upper right-hand side of the heart and has relatively thin walls. From an anatomical point of view, the RA comprises three basic parts, the appendage, the vestibule of the tricuspid valve, and the venous component (superior and inferior vena cava, and the coronary sinus) receiving the deoxygenated blood. The RA is a dynamic structure dedicated to receive blood and to assist right ventricular (RV) filling. The three components of atrial function are the reservoir function during ventricular systole, the conduit function which consists in passive blood transfer from veins to the RV in diastole, and the booster pump function in relation to atrial contraction in late diastole to complete ventricular filling. Right atrial function depends on cardiac rhythm (sinus or atrial fibrillation), pericardial integrity, RV load and function, and tricuspid function. Right atrial dimension assessment is limited in two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography. Right atrial planimetry in the apical four-chamber view is commonly used with an upper normal value of 18-20 cm2. Minor and major diameters can also be measured. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography could overcome the limitation of conventional echocardiography in assessing RA size. Right atrial function has been poorly explored by echocardiography both in physiological and pathological contexts. Although tricuspid inflow and tissue Doppler imaging of tricuspid annulus can be used in the exploration of RA function, 2D speckle tracking and 3D echocardiography appear promising tools to dissect RA function and to overcome the limitations of standard echocardiography.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's creativity and publishing record in two niche market genres—weird and the detective fiction—during the war years as his maturing process, both self-taught and mentored, continued. It begins with a discussion of Bradbury's relationship with the editors and publishers of Weird Tales and the frustrations he experienced as he sought to have his weird fiction printed. It then considers Bradbury's venture into detective fiction following the wartime suspension or outright demise of a number of pulp magazines catering to fantasy and science fiction, successfully placing several stories in Detective Tales, New Detective, and Dime Mystery. Under Julius Schwartz's entrepreneurial stewardship, at least thirty-eight Bradbury short stories from this period circulated, but failed to sell.

Abstract:
This chapter examines some of the transitions in Ray Bradbury's life and career by focusing on the role played by Don Congdon, editorial at Simon & Schuster. It begins with a consideration of Bradbury's deteriorating relationship with Grant Beach, followed by a discussion of challenges on the professional front, including the poor sales of his pulp market stories. It then turns to developments that boded well for Bradbury for the long term, such as the increasing interest being shown by anthologists and New York publishing houses towards his work and the opportunities resulting from his four major market magazine sales in the summer of 1945. It also looks at Bradbury's relationship with Congdon and how he helped him secure major sales for some of his best new fiction such as “Homecoming,” which sold to Mademoiselle. Under Congdon's guidance, Bradbury also saw increased demand for reprints of his short stories such as “Skeleton,” “The Watchers,” and “Invisible Boy.”

Abstract:
This chapter describes Ray Bradbury as a writer obsessed with perfection as reflected in his tendency to revise his stories. Bradbury's public reputation was growing fast, but this proved to be a little difficult for him to handle psychologically. Julius Schwartz was still circulating his new stories among the New York pulp editors, but Bradbury was sending fewer and fewer selections East because of his desire to make everything perfect. He believed that careful revisions, sometimes over a period of weeks or even months, were preferable to immediate circulation “hot from the typewriter.” This chapter considers how Bradbury's convictions sometimes led to conflict with the few writers he considered intimates, citing as examples his disagreements with Hannes Bok and Jack Woodford over the latter's Trial and Error and with Jack Snow over his Dark Music and Other Spectral Tales. Bradbury's propensity to revise also led to the growing tensions between him and August Derleth as Dark Carnival went through presswork.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on graphic and television adaptations of some of Ray Bradbury's science fiction stories in the 1950s. Bookstores continued to provide a favorite recreation for Bradbury. He and his wife Maggie were beginning to buy more books for their home library. His newer reading discoveries now included the works of Sean O'Casey, Luigi Pirandello, and Marcel Aymé. This expansion of Bradbury's reading favorites coincided with the opportunity to extend his rather limited interaction with the world of television and film. Perhaps the most significant event of 1951 for Bradbury was a dinner with John Huston. This chapter examines graphic adaptations of Bradbury stories, including comic strips that were possible “lifts,” as well as television adaptations such as the broadcast of “Zero Hour” on NBC's Lights Out and Sidney Lumet's direction of “The Rocket” for CBS Television Workshop. It also discusses the problem of rights over many Bradbury pulp stories sold during the early and mid-1940s that complicated negotiations for other deals.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Ray Bradbury's struggles and inroads in his efforts to sell his work during the year 1947. In April 1947 Hirschel Brickell announced Bradbury's first O. Henry Prize Stories selection (for “The Homecoming”), but over the next five months sales would be few and far between. The fact that Bradbury was still offering to the major market magazines without an agent was also cutting into his potential sales. This chapter examines Bradbury's partnerships with Don Congdon and August Derleth as he sought to generate more income. It also considers Bradbury's change in sales strategy for pulp submissions as well as the emergence of a recurring theme in his newer science fiction stories—the decline of literature and human values in an increasingly rational society—as well as his search for a space-age mythos on the planet Mars. Finally, it recounts the Bradbury–McClure marriage on September 30 and Bradbury's adjustments in his writing routines to the new dynamics of married life in their Venice Beach home.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's determined stance to go his own way and write stories to please himself despite the reluctance of slick magazines to publish them. Bradbury's early postwar success in the slicks came with short stories that were basically or with a few dark fantasies that the slicks were willing—very occasionally—to take a chance on. For example, Rita Smith at Mademoiselle had taken three Bradbury stories, but began to draw the line at stories about Mars. Throughout the late 1940s Bradbury's science fiction and dark fantasies were rejected by major market editors, deeming them “wrong” or “not quite right” for their readers. This chapter considers Bradbury's insistence on writing his own kind of story instead of slanting for the slicks and how his change in creative focus enabled him to sell many of his Martian stories, along with many of the other darker science fiction tales, to pulp magazines with little or no need for revision. It also discusses the impasse Bradbury had reached with his attempts at long fiction.

Abstract:
This book explores the emergence and development of terraforming in science fiction from H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds (1898) to James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar (2009). Terraforming is the process of making other worlds habitable for human life. Its counterpart on Earth—geoengineering—has been positioned as a possible means of addressing the effects of climate change. This book asks how science fiction has imagined the ways we shape both our world and other planets and how stories of terraforming reflect on science, society and environmentalism. It traces the growth of the motif of terraforming in stories by such writers as H.G. Wells and Olaf Stapledon in the UK, American pulp science fiction by Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, the counter cultural novels of Frank Herbert, Ursula K. Le Guin and Ernest Callenbach, and Pamela Sargent’s Venus trilogy, Frederick Turner’s epic poem of terraforming, Genesis, and Kim Stanley Robinson’s acclaimed Mars trilogy. It explores terraforming as a nexus for environmental philosophy, the pastoral, ecology, the Gaia hypothesis, the politics of colonisation and habitation, tradition and memory. This book shows how contemporary environmental awareness and our understanding of climate change is influenced by science fiction, and how terraforming in particular has offered scientists, philosophers, and many other readers a motif to think in complex ways about the human impact on planetary environments. Amidst contemporary anxieties about climate change, terraforming offers an important vantage from which to consider the ways humankind shapes and is shaped by their world.
