Abstract:
How do immigrants to Canada experience exile and diaspora? What happens when a person does not identify with a nostalgic past "there" or a present "here," but rather with "nowhere"? I am interested in the development of a diasporic critical consciousness in three recent novels by Caribbean-Canadian women writers. This paper uses theories of diaspora, cosmopolitanism, hybridity, kala pani discourse, and anti-racist feminist analysis to discuss Ramabai Espinet's The Swinging Bridge (2003), Tessa McWatt's Out of My Skin (1998), and Dionne Brand's What We All Long For (2005). Overall the novels explore the potential of art and artistic strategies to express the complex condition of diaspora, to form alliances between different cultural and ethnic communities, and to enable social and political change. While acknowledging the violent and traumatic historical factors that have contributed to diaspora, the novels look to art and hybridity as sites of resistance and hope.

Abstract:
Syftet med litteraturstudien var att undersöka hur Ramadan-fastan påverkar atletidrottares idrottsprestation. Metoden som användes var en litteraturstudie, där totalt tio peer-reviewed artiklar inkluderades genom en inkluderings- och exkluderingsmetod. Resultatet visade att atletidrottarnas idrottsprestation under Ramadan-fastan antingen vara oförändrad eller minskad. Kroppsvikten minskade dock ytterst lite under Ramadan-fastan. Slutsatsen i detta arbete är att forskarna som studerat dessa ämnesområdena inte kan enas om att ge en tydlig slutsats, då det krävs mer klinisk forskning. Det forskarna dock rekommenderar är att en modifiering av träningsupplägg, sömn och dietintag bör göras för att upprätthålla idrottares prestanda under Ramadan-fastan.

Bakgrund: Firandet av månaden Ramadan och den tillhörande fastan utgör en av islams fem pelare och praktiseras av muslimer världen över. De senaste decennierna har sett en ökad inflyttning till Sverige av folkgrupper med islam som kulturell bakgrund. Denna population kommer förr eller senare i kontakt med vården i det sekulära väst. Ramadan, som innebär en månad av daglig fasta, påverkar den somatiska hälsan och det är viktigt att ha kunskap om hur detta påverkar den fastande befolkningen samt att förstå hur muslimer förhåller sig till Ramadan. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka fastande muslimers upplevelse av fysisk och psykisk hälsa under Ramadan i mötet med vården. Metod: Studien genomfördes som en litteraturöversikt med induktiv tematisk analys. Resultat: Analysen genererade fyra huvudteman vilka belyser muslimers upplevelse av fasta och kontakt med vården i samband med Ramadan: Ramadan som socialt fenomen, personens upplevelse av hälsa och fasta under Ramadan, islam som livsvärld och kontakt med vården i samband med ramadanfasta. Dessa teman speglar individens upplevelser av religionen och hälsa, dess andliga dimension och mötet med den sekulära vården. Diskussion: I diskussionen föreslås Antonovskys känsla av sammanhang (KASAM) som ett verktyg för att skapa bättre förståelse hos vårdpersonal för personer med en livsvärld förankrad i en religiös världssyn. I resultatet synliggörs hur muslimer ofta upplever sig förbisedda i kontakten med vården som inte respekterar betydelsen religionen intar i patienternas hälsonarrativ. Vikten av dialogen som redskap för en personcentrerad vård betonas och sjuksköterskeprofessionens ursprung i Nightingales syn på omvårdnad som ett andligt kall diskuteras.
Background: Celebrating the month of Ramadan and the thereto belonging fast is one of the five Pillars of Islam and is practiced by Muslims all over the world. The last decades have seen an increase in the immigration to Sweden of ethnic groups with Islam as their cultural referent. This population will eventually encounter the public health care of western secular society. Ramadan – which implies a month of daily fasting – has an impact on somatic health and it is of importance to possess knowledge of how this affects the fasting population and to understand how Muslims relate to Ramadan. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine fasting Muslim’s experience of physical and psychological health during Ramadan in the context of public health care. Method: A literature review with inductive thematic analysis was used for this study. Results: The analysis yielded four main themes illuminating Muslim’s experience of fasting and their encounters with health care during Ramadan: Ramadan as a social phenomenon, The person’s experience of health and fasting during Ramadan, Islam as life-world, and Contact with health care in connection with Ramadan. These themes reflect the individual’s experience of religion and health, its spiritual dimension, and interaction with western health care. Discussion: Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence (SOC) is proposed as a tool for use among health care practitioners to better understand the life-worlds of persons with a religious world-view. The result illustrates how Muslim persons often experience neglect in the encounter with a health care that do not respect the significance religion has in the patient’s health narrative. The importance of dialogue as a tool in person centred care is emphasised and the origins of professional nursing in Nightingale’s views on nursing as a spiritual vocation are discussed.

Abstract:
Two oubreaks of poisoning by the mushroom Ramaria flavo-brunnescens are reported in cattle from two farms located in the municipalities of Santa Maria and São Gabriel, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil during April-May 2005. Out of a total of 180 yearling calves that had access to a pasture with eucalyptus woods, 19 were affected and 10 died. The clinical courses were 8-15 days and clinical signs included depression, weight loss, dehydration, drooling, loosening and loss of the long hairs of the tip of the tail, smoothening of the dorsal surface of the tongue with occasional ulceration, loosening of the corneal encasement of horns, hard and ball-shaped feces covered with a film of mucous, hypopion, hyphema and corneal opacity. Two calves had leucocytosis due to mild regenerative left shift. Nine calves were necropsied. Necropsy findings confirmed the clinical observation and additionaly included fibrinonecrotic esophagitis, mainly in the distal third of the esophageal mucosa. Histopathological changes in the skin of the tail included orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis; hair folicles with irregular contours, and thickening of the tricolemmal keratin layer with occasional formation of keratin plugs, and degeneration and necrosis of the outer root sheath. At the laminar region of the hooves, there was hemorrhage, fibrin and neutrophilic infiltrate in the dermal laminae. hyperplasia of the top of epidermal laminae with irregular keratinization and retention of nuclei; several epidermal laminae were shortened and fused. In the mucosa of the tongue there was thinning of the covering epithelium, atrophy and loss of filiform papillae, multifocal areas of dyskeratosis, and spongiosis of the basal cell layer. In some parts the epithelium was lost and the surface consisted of granulation tissue and mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate. The esophageal mucosae of six calves had varying degree of epithelial necrosis and inflammation. The loss of the covering epithelium revealed an underneath area of granulation tissue with heavy inflammatory infiltrate composed predominantly of neutrophils and macrophages. In six calves there were focal symmetric bilateral areas of malacia observed at the level of obex in the medulla oblongata and affecting the white matter and parts of the dorsal nucleus of the vagus and of the hypoglossal nucleus. Ultrastructurally the keratinocytes of the dorsal epithelial surface of the tongue had decreased numbers of cytokeratin filament bundles. The epidemiology, clinical signs, pathology, and pathogenesis of poisoning by R. flavo-brunnescens in cattle are discussed. Additionally a case of R. flavo-brunnescens poisoning in a horse is described.
Dois surtos de intoxicação pelo cogumelo Ramaria flavo-brunnescens são relatados em bovinos de duas fazendas localizadas nos municípios de Santa Maria e São Gabriel, no Rio Grande do Sul, no período de abril-maio de 2005. De um total de 180 bovinos de sobreano que tiveram acesso a bosques de eucaliptos, 19 adoeceram e 10 morreram. A evolução clínica foi de 8-15 dias e os sinais clínicos incluíam depressão, perda de peso, desidratação, salivação excessiva, afrouxamento e perda dos pêlos longos da cauda, alisamento da superfície dorsal da língua com ocasional ulceração, afrouxamento do estojo córneo dos chifres, fezes em forma de cíbalos e recobertas por película de muco, hipópion, hifema e opacidade da córnea. Dois novilhos tinham leucocitose devido a leve desvio regenerativo à esquerda. Os achados de necropsia confirmaram as observações clínicas e adicionalmente incluíam esofagite fibrinonecrótica, principalmente no terço distal do esôfago. Alterações histopatológicas na pele da cauda incluíam hiperqueratose ortoqueratótica, folículos pilosos com contornos irregulares, espessamento da camada de queratina tricolemal e formação ocasional de tampões de queratina; degeneração e necrose da bainha radicular externa também era observada. Nos cascos havia hemorragia, fibrina e infiltrado neutrofílico nas lâminas dérmicas, hiperplasia do topo das lâminas epidérmicas com queratinização irregular e retenção dos núcleos; várias lâminas epidérmicas estavam encurtadas e fundidas. Na mucosa da língua o epitélio de revestimento estava adelgaçado, com atrofia e perda das papilas filiformes e havia áreas multifocais de disqueratose e espongiose das células da camada basal. Em algumas porções havia perda do epitélio e a superfície da língua era formada por tecido de granulação e infiltrado inflamatório misto. A mucosa esofágica de seis novilhos apresentava vários graus de necrose epitelial e inflamação. A perda do epitélio de revestimento revelava uma área subjacente de tecido de granulação com marcado infiltrado inflamatório predominantemente neutrofílico e macrofágico. Em seis novilhos, o bulbo, na altura do óbex, apresentava áreas focais bilaterais e simétricas de malacia que afetava a substância branca e partes do núcleo dorsal do vago e do núcleo hipoglosso. Ultra-estruturalmente, os queratinócitos do epitélio da superfície dorsal da língua apresentavam diminuição do número de feixes de filamentos de citoqueratina. São discutidos a epidemiologia, os sinais clínicos, a patologia e a patogênese da intoxicação por R. flavo-brunnescens em bovinos. Adicionalmente um caso de intoxicação por R. flavo-brunnescens é relatado em eqüino.

Abstract:
This dissertation covers three subjects: (i) computational characterization of Antigen (Ag)-Antibody (Ab) interactions (ii) a novel and effective algorithm to predict the epitope of a protein based on an antibody imprinting technique (iii) a comparison of existing de novo genome assembler algorithms targeted specifically at the assembly of data generated by Illumina (Solexa) short-read sequencing technology, and suggestions for their improvement. The first part focuses on identification, characterization and understanding the ways in which the antibodies and antigens interact. We analyze Epitope/Paratope region using a large dataset of Ag - Ab complex structural data taken from the PDB. Epitope/Paratope regions in our dataset have been characterized in terms of their size, average amino acid residue composition, residue-residue pairing preferences, and residue dispersion in the epitope and paratope regions. This analysis provides a more up-to-date picture of the Ag-Ab interface and provides new insights into the role of residue composition and distribution in Ag-Ab recognition. The above analysis helps in obtaining a refined substitution matrix optimized for antibody imprinting technique and used to improve the effectiveness of the epitope prediction algorithms that have also been developed and are the second focus of the thesis. The third and the final part focus on the de novo genome assembly problems. The genome assembly programs takes the short reads generated by Whole genome shotgun sequencing technology and computationally reconstructs the genome. For the genome assembly problem the connections between read length, read type, repeat complexity, quality score and coverage and how these parameters help in improving or diminishing the capability of the assembly programs to assemble the sequence data were studied in depth. At the end of this experimental process it gives us a better understanding of the impact of the above mentioned parameters on the complexity of genome assembly and helps ascertain margins on these parameters of sequence data that enable efficient and accurate assembly by the programs.

Il s’agit de faire un état des lieux de l’histoire et du fonctionnement de la télévision sous les différents régimes afin de déterminer l’amplitude ou non des changements dans la diffusion des programmes. Cette temporalité attire les producteurs, les directeurs des chaînes ainsi que les annonceurs et plonge le téléspectateur tunisien dans une consommation effrénée, ce qui confirme l’emprise des gouvernements pour s’accaparer cette pratique et intégrer ce rituel dans leurs stratégies de propagande. Abstract:
Uppsatsen undersöker i vilka sammanhang som tidningarna Dagens Nyheter och Expressen skriver om den muslimska fastehögtiden ramadan. Studien genomförs med kvantitativ metod, med utgångspunkt i nyhetsvärderingsteori. Åren som undersöks är 1995-2013, med nedslag vartannat år (1995, 1997, 1999 och så vidare). Urvalsmetoden som används är totalurval, där alla artiklar med relevans för studiens ämne har tagits med. Undersökningen innefattar såväl nyhetstext och notiser som opinionsmaterial. Totalt 193 artiklar har analyserats: 96 stycken från Dagens Nyheter och 97 stycken från Expressen. Studien visar att högtiden ofta skrivs om i sammanhang som är konfliktrelaterade, något som följer ett mönster som tidigare forskning om mediebilden av islam och muslimer pekat på. Men ramadan har också ett eget nyhetsvärde som religiös högtid, och det finns en betydande del artiklar som har en mer positiv vinkel. Resultatet av studien visar att ramadan börjar ta plats som huvudämne i inrikesartiklar från år 2003 och framåt, i båda tidningarna. I dessa fall fokuserar artiklarna på ramadan som religiös och kulturell högtid. Denna tendens håller i sig i Dagens Nyheter fram till år 2011. Expressen slutar i stort sett att skriva artiklar med ramadan som huvudämne efter år 2005.

O presente relatório aborda o trabalho desenvolvido durante a realização de um Estágio Curricular no âmbito do mestrado em Design Multimédia da Universidade da Beira Interior, no Centro Comunitário Paroquial da Ramada, em Odivelas. O primeiro capítulo apresenta o conceito de identidade corporativa, a sua concepção e estrutura, como também a dicotomia existente entre identidade e imagem, abordando por fim a importância do papel no designer na criação e manutenção dessa identidade. O segundo capítulo é dedicado ao estágio. Faz-se uma apresentação do mesmo, definindo os objectivos que para ele foram traçados e revelando de que modo foi organizado, estruturado e planificado. Apresentam-se igualmente, com detalhe, todos os projectos realizados, tanto ao nível da sua motivação como da sua concretização.
This report presents the work done in the Parish Community Centre of Ramada in Odivelas. It was carried out in order to obtain a Master´s degree in Design Multimedia at the University of Beira Interior. The first part introduces the notion of corporate identity. In addition, not only shows its conception and structure but it also displays the difference between identity and image, focusing on the designer’s role as a creator of a corporate identity programme. The second chapter describes the internship and the different projects it entailed, as well as its objectives and importance. The different projects are described in detail.

The pathogenesis of the lesions of the Ramaria flavo-brunnescens poisoning in cattle was studied throughout a retrospective evaluation of selected tissues from nine spontaneous and four experimental cases of the disease. The pathogenesis of lesions observed in the tongue, esophagus, hoof, and tail was investigated analyzing microscopic lesions, histochemical and histochemical-ultrastuctural changes. Histochemical techniques utilized were Masson s Trichrome and Selective Oxidation of Keratin (SOK). The histochemicalultrastuctural study was acomplished throughout the Swift method under transmission electron microscopy. Hair shafts of the tip of the tail were analyzed under polarized light. Lesions of varying degrees of severity were observed. They were more severe in spontaneous than in experimental cases. In the tongue, most microscopic lesions showed keratinization defects, such as loss of the filiform papillae, thinning, irregular stratification, focal lamelar keratinization, and individual cell keratinization (dyskeratosis) in the dorsal epithelium. In the esophagus, there were thinness of superficial epithelium and multifocal ulcers. In the hoof, lesions were in the laminar stratum and characterized by different grades of fusion, shortness, multiple layers of non-keratinized cells in the laminar tip, irregular and discontinuous keratinization with nuclear persistency, individual cell keratinization with citoplasmic vacuolization of keratinocytes of the epidermal laminae. In the skin of the tip of the tail, changes could by separated in follicular wall lesions (affecting the outer [ORS] and the inner root sheets [IRS]) and changes of the hair shaft itself. The main changes observed in the follicular epithelium were disorganization, misalignment, and disceratosis of keratinocytes of the ORS. On tissue sections, main changes in the hair shafts showed irregular contour, tortuousness, and disintegration of shaft. Morphological changes similar to the ones observed on tissue sections and changes in polarizing patterns were seen on polarized light microscopy of hair shafts. Tissue sections stained by Masson s Trichrome technique (with picric acid) revealed defective hard keratinization of filliform papillae, of epidermal lamina of hoof, and of tail tip hair shafts. Sections stained by the SOK technique revealed strong loss of cistine contents, visualized as light staining of these same structures. On the histochemical-ultrastructural study of the hair cuticle, performed throughout the Swift technique under transmission electron microscopy, a low content of cistine was also observed. All changes observed in the keratinized structures studied, mostly in the hard keratin, showed defective keratinization. The morphologic study and the results obtained with SOK and Swift techniques showed that the defective keratinization results of low amounts of sulphur containing amino acids (cystine) in hard keratin structures. This is probably the main pathogenetic mechanism of the lesions observed in R. flavo brunnescens poisoning in cattle.
O estudo da patogênese da intoxicação pelo cogumelo Ramaria flavo-brunnescens em bovinos foi realizado através da avaliação retrospectiva de tecidos selecionados de nove casos espontâneos e quatro casos experimentais. Para a investigação da patogênese das lesões observadas na língua, esôfago, casco e cauda, foram avaliadas as alterações histopatológicas e aspectos histoquímicos e histoquímico-ultra-estruturais das lesões. As técnicas histoquímicas utilizadas foram o Tricrômico de Masson e a oxidação seletiva da ceratina (OSC). O estudo histoquímico-ultra-estrutural foi realizado através da técnica de Swift sob microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Os pelos da vassoura da cauda foram examinados sob microscopia de luz polarizada. Nos tecidos examinados foram observados diferentes graus e estágios de lesões. Nos bovinos intoxicados espontaneamente as lesões foram mais acentuadas que nos casos experimentais. Na língua, a grande maioria das lesões histopatológicas observadas demonstrou defeitos na ceratinização como desaparecimento das papilas filiformes, adelgaçamento, estratificação irregular, ceratinização lamelar focal e ceratinização individual de células (disceratose) no epitélio de revestimento dorsal. No esôfago observaram-se adelgaçamento do epitélio superficial e úlceras multifocais. Nos cascos havia alterações no estrato laminar, caracterizadas por graus variáveis de fusão, encurtamento, múltiplas camadas de células não-ceratinizadas no topo, ceratinização irregular e descontínua com persistência de núcleos, ceratinização individual e vacuolização citoplasmática de ceratinócitos das lâminas epidérmicas. Na pele da região da vassoura da cauda, as alterações foram divididas em lesões da parede folicular (nas bainhas radicular externa e interna) e alterações nos pelos propriamente ditos. As principais alterações observadas no epitélio folicular foram desorganização, desalinhamento e disceratose de ceratinócitos da bainha radicular externa. Nas seções histológicas, as principais alterações nas hastes pilosas demonstraram contornos irregulares, tortuosidade e desintegração da haste. Alterações morfológicas semelhantes às descritas nas seções histológicas e alterações no padrão de birrefringência foram observadas através do exame polaroscópico dos pelos. Através da técnica do Tricrômico de Masson (com ácido pícrico) observou-se ceratinização dura defeituosa das papilas filiformes linguais, das lâminas epidérmicas do casco e dos pelos da cauda. A técnica da OSC revelou redução marcada do conteúdo de cistina, visualizado como fraca coloração rósea dessas mesmas estruturas. No estudo histoquímico-ultra-estrutural da cutícula pilosa, realizado através da técnica de Swift sob microscopia eletrônica de transmissão, observou-se também um baixo conteúdo de cistina. Todas as alterações observadas nas estruturas ceratinizadas estudadas, mas especialmente nas que sofrem ceratinização dura, revelaram defeitos na ceratinização. Aliando ao estudo morfológico os resultados obtidos através da técnica da OSC e da microscopia eletrônica/técnica de Swift pode-se associar os defeitos na ceratinização a uma redução na quantidade de aminoácidos sulfurados (cistina), principalmente nas estruturas que sofrem ceratinização dura, sendo este provavelmente o principal mecanismo patogenético na intoxicação por R. flavo brunnescens em bovinos.

During the 9th lunar month of each year around 1 billion Muslims adhere to the religious 4- week festival of Ramadan, which is considered as a time for empathy for those less fortunate, a time for restraint, and goodwill. The main focus of the religious intervention of Ramadan is the intermittent fast whereby, each day between dawn and sunset nutritional abstinence is practiced. Empirical evidence from experienced soccer coaches in Qatar has indicated that the 4-week intermittent fast during Ramadan impedes the quality and quantity of training, as well as match play. However, there has been lack of attention directed to the consequences associated with Ramadan and football (soccer) players. Greater understanding of the consequences of Islamic soccer players adhering to lifestyle changes and intermittent fasting would facilitate soccer coaches in a systematic approach to addressing potential negative performance effects associated with Ramadan in future soccer-seasons. In order to address the research problem, a soccer-specific battery of tests was required; as there is no established gold standard battery of soccer-specific field tests preliminary technical and methodological studies were required. In Study-1 a soccer-specific anaerobic capacity field test (Liverpool Anaerobic Speed Test or LAST) was piloted for validity, reliability, and practicality since, the choice for suitable soccer-specific anaerobic capacity tests were inadequate. It was found that two familiarisation sessions are necessary to reduce systematic bias markedly and habituate players with procedures of the LAST. The total measurement error (ratio of Limits of Agreement) of the LAST was 2.5% (± 18 m), and peak blood lactate values produced were 17.6 mmol.l⁻¹, which were greater than the 14.7 mmol.l⁻¹ criteria set for maximal anaerobic effort before the pilot study. The test set-up and administration proved to be practical, facilitating large numbers of subjects to be evaluated relatively quickly ( < 20 min). Therefore, the LAST was included in the soccer-specific battery of field tests, which then provided a comprehensive analysis of the separate components soccer performance. The available facility to conduct this investigation was the soccer-field at Al-Ahli Sports Club Doha, Qatar and therefore, further methodological investigations were necessary; temperatures within Qatar can vary during different times of the season, and at times are quite severe with respect to heat and humidity. The purpose of Study-2 was to examine how robust the discrete soccer-specific field tests were which, would be used during the intervention of Ramadan, using a repeated measures counter-balanced design of indoor and outdoor conditions. It was found that during the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test (YYIRT) (Krustrup et al., 2003) outdoor assessment maximal performance was reduced by 19% in contrast to the YYIRT conducted indoors, despite the subjects attaining similar maximal heart rates. Consequently, the YYIRT to volitional exhaustion was excluded from the battery of tests to be used during the intervention of Ramadan; all other soccer-specific field tests were found to be robust for use in the heat. The aim of Study-3 was a qualitative investigation to observe current soccer-practice and related factors surrounding training; this brief included bedtime, wake-up time, sleep duration, environmental conditions, pre-training dehydration, body fluids lost during training, body-core temperature, and relative training intensity. During Ramadan it was found that bedtime and wake-up time were significantly delayed and sleep duration lengthened compared to normal. Post-Ramadan was found to be akin to eastward time travel with advancement in bedtime, wake-up and return to normal sleep duration. Dehydration was significantly greater pre-training during Ramadan in comparison to non- Ramadan training weeks, and body fluid loss during training in both Ramadan and non- Ramadan periods was considerable. Relative training workload was also quantified during this time and highlighted important practical problems.

ABSTRACT: The work presented in this dissertation is an attempt to develop a structured analysis of one of the main segments of the logistic chain: procurement. This analysis takes into consideration several activities associated with this segment, from raw materials ordering up to its reception and storage. To carry out this study the specific case of an industrial company from the metalomecanic sector (Storage Systems) belonging to the F.Ramada Group was considered. Based on this work a set of recomendations was produced with a view of improving the procurement processes and some of the management practices of the company.

Sverige är ett mångkulturellt land och i nästan varje klass finns det elever med annan kulturell bakgrund än den svenska. Det är viktigt i skolan att kunna anpassa och ge varje elev så bra förutsättningar som möjligt. Detta uppnås, enligt undersökningen, bäst genom förståelse för varje elevs kulturella och religiösa bakgrund. Först då blir det möjligt att uppfylla varje individs behov. För att besvara frågeställningarna har en enkätstudie använts. Denna metod valdes för att den var bäst lämpad för att undersöka arbetets syfte. Resultatet i undersökningen visar att eleverna påverkas negativt både psykiskt och fysiskt under utövandet av ramadan. En av slutsatserna i uppsatsen är att fastan påverkar eleverna. Resultatet visar att skolan måste arbeta för att utveckla sin förmåga att anpassa sig efter elevernas individuella behov under ramadan. I syfte att eleverna inte hamnar efter i undervisningen på grund av deras tro.

This is a qualitative research paper, which aims to examine how religion classes are conducted in inner-city and suburban schools. Interviews have been performed with two religion teachers, one at Grindtorp School in Alby and one at the English Gymnasium in Södermalm. There have been performed interviews with eight students, four from each school. The students have a different age, sex and religious beliefs. With these interviews we can get a better understanding how the students of today’s school think about the religious education. During the progress of the paper it became clear that the area in which students live had little impact on the way classes were conducted. What had a greater impact was the social class, which students belonged to. Students with parents with a higher education background displayed a will to move to the better schools to get a better education. Students with parents lacking higher education often chose to stay in the suburban schools where it is difficult to succeed as there are more noisy students than in the inner-city. We can also see that students how have parents with a higher education and go to better schools have a bigger respect for students with other religious beliefs.

Ramadan requires individuals to abstain from food and fluid intake between sunrise and sunset; physiological considerations predict that poorer mood, physical performance and mental performance will result. In addition, any difficulties will be worsened because preparations for fasting and recovery from it often mean that nocturnal sleep is decreased in length, and this independently affects mood and performance. Previous field studies have indicated that some of these predictions are borne out in practice; in the first study of the present thesis, a field study performed in Libya, these predictions were tested further by adding more physiological measurements and tests of performance. Findings indicated that Ramadan was associated with negative effects upon a wide range of variables, including rising urine daytime osmolality (indicative of progressive dehydration), subjective estimates of amounts of activities actually performed and those wished to be done (indicating less activity in the daytime), and metabolic and subjective responses to a short bout of exercise (increased effort required and metabolism tending towards fat rather than glucose catabolism). Because of the difficulties of performing a battery of tasks in a field study, two laboratory-based experiments were then performed, the second differing from the first in studying a greater range of variables and more time-points during the daytime. These two studies also differed from the situation in Ramadan in that non-Muslim students were volunteers and fasting was performed for only one day. Many of the changes previously found in Ramadan were duplicated in this work, so justifying the use of laboratory experiments lasting one day and using non-Muslim subjects as a model for some of the problems present in Ramadan. However, it was also found that preparations before the fast were often less marked than was the case with Muslims in Ramadan, a difference that can be attributed to subjects' lack of experience of fasting as well as the amount of time spent fasting. A difficulty of interpretation in all these studies was that changes could be due to fasting and/or the length of sleep, which tends to decrease. These two factors were separated in the final experiment, an intervention study performed in the laboratory. This study compared effects of different durations of fasting (4, 8 or 16 h) upon a wide variety of measures (including subjective and objective assessments of performance, dehydration and responses to a short bout of exercise) - but with an unchanged amount of nocturnal sleep and daytime naps not allowed. Many of the negative effects observed in previous studies were present in this experiment also. These findings indicate that fasting was responsible for much of the change previously observed, though some effect of sleep loss, particularly if occurring on successive days (as would occur in Ramadan) cannot be excluded. One finding common to all studies was that tests of performance that had shown variations due to the combination of circadian influences, time awake and sleep loss in other experiments (including grip strength, the Stroop test and accuracy at throwing darts) seemed little affected. Possible reasons for these negative findings are discussed, together with further experiments to separate out effects of sleep loss and fasting, and the role of subjects' experience in studies of fasting. In addition, more detailed studies to investigate changes in sleep and the type and level of physical activities when fasting are proposed.

Hypohydration and fasting are used as means to achieve body mass loss and Ramadan fasting is practised by millions of Muslims as a religious custom. Although both hypohydration and fasting have been studied extensively, the effect of hypohydration and Ramadan style fasting on many aspects of human performance is still unclear. In Chapter 3, the effect of exercise-induced hypohydration on muscle performance was evaluated. The protocol was developed to eliminate masking and exacerbating factors such as changes in muscle glycogen storage, muscle temperature, fatigue and fluid distribution change and acid base status. Muscle strength and endurance decreased due to hypohydration equivalent to 2% of body mass. This suggests that hydration status itself can affect adversely athletes' performance. In Chapter 4, the effect of one day (11 h) of Ramadan style fasting on some aspects of exercise performance during the day was investigated. Participants were tested three times throughout the day: at 7:00 am, 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm. 11 h of Ramadan style fasting decreased body mass by 2.1%. No change was found in exercise performance measurements. The results of this study suggest that this short period of fasting has no measurable effects on performance and/or that any effects are compensated by the circadian rhythm throughout the day. However, most athletes use more intense fasting or several consecutive days of fasting to achieve their weight reduction goal. In Chapter 5, the effect of Ramadan fasting (one month long intermittent fasting) on some aspects of exercise performance of athletes (weight category and non-weight category sports) and recreationally active individuals was studied. Participants were tested before, during (after the first week and in the last week) and after the month of Ramadan. Ramadan style living (involving a change in timing of food intake and sleep pattern) affects most of the anthropometric and physical performance parameters of the athletes and of the recreationally active subjects, with no difference in the pattern of change between groups. Almost all of the differences were recovered a week after the end of fasting. Chapter 6 contains the results of three studies focused on the effects of fasting on cognitive function (study A- breakfast elimination; study B- one day (11 h) of Ramadan style fasting; and study C- one month of Ramadan fasting). Results of these studies make a logical conclusion that fasting has a detrimental effect on memory, reaction time and accuracy of responses. The pattern of the effects showed differences that may be related to various participants' characteristics (age group, gender) and the nature of intervention. In summary, Ramadan style fasting may affect performance of some mental and physical tasks in some, but perhaps not in all individuals.

O problema do acesso à propriedade da terra se faz presente no Brasil desde a colonização do país, sendo que se agravou pós 1964 com a implementação do modelo de desenvolvimento rural calcado na modernização tecnológica da agricultura. Neste cenário, no final da década de 1970, após a intensa repressão do período militar, ressurgiram os movimentos populares, dentre os quais destacou-se o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra -MST-. No processo, organizaram-se assentamentos rurais que estão se constituindo em possibilidade para os trabalhadores rurais sem-terra retornarem ao campo. A presente pesquisa enfoca a problemática dos assentamentos rurais caracterizados por pequenas unidades de produção familiar em uma área dominada pelas médias e grandes propriedades rurais. Procurou-se analisar no processo de formação do assentamento Ramada, as estratégias de (re)produção dos assentados, buscando avaliar os elementos que influenciaram/influenciam na sua organização produtiva, os reflexos espaciais e o perfil das famílias assentadas. O assentamento Ramada, objeto de estudo desta pesquisa, localiza-se no Município de Júlio de Castilhos/RS. No assentamento predomina o trabalho individual e a produção comercial de soja. Porém, os cultivos de subsistência têm importante papel, pois se constituem em uma estratégia fundamental na viabilização da unidade de produção familiar. Nas atividades criatórias destacam-se principalmente as criações destinadas à subsistência, predominando dentre estas o gado leiteiro, embora poucos invistam exclusivamente nesta produção que normalmente é associada ao cultivo da soja. A pluriatividade se manifesta na Ramada sob as formas de beneficiamento da produção, assalariamento e feiras. Observou-se que existem problemas, porém, no geral, a qualidade de vida melhorou. A Ramada promoveu um rearranjo do processo produtivo, pois foi responsável pela criação de pequenas unidades de produção plurifuncionais no espaço rural de Júlio de Castilhos. Inseriu elementos novos no espaço rural, lançando assim as bases para a mudança da sociedade a partir da reconstrução do território.

Som undersökningsmetod användes en allmän kvalitativ ansats och vi valde att göra halvstrukturerade intervjuer med sex kvinnor för att samla in vårt material. Resultatet visade att man upplevde ramadan som en positiv upplevelse med fokus på religiositet och gemenskap, alla utom en av våra respondenter klarade att fasta hela perioden. Det förekom dock fysiska symtom som huvudvärk, hunger, törst och yrsel detta visade sig framförallt i början av fasteperioden. I skolsituationen upplevdes den teoretiska delen som mer krävande än den praktiska. Det framkom att eleverna hade önskemål men framförde inte detta till sina lärare. Eleverna erfor att lärarna inte hade samma möjlighet som handledarna i den arbetsplatsförlagda utbildningen att anpassa rutiner för undervisningen under ramadan.

While studying to become teachers in the field of health care, we met during the practical training many students with a Muslim background. A devout Muslim should fast one month out of every year, which meant that these students could not eat or drink while attending school. We were curious about their experiences. The purpose of this study was to describe some of the experiences of Muslim women who attended the Health Care Program during the month of Ramadan. Our method of research was to use a general qualitative approach, we chose to make semi-structured interviews with six women to gather our material. The results showed that they had a positive experience of Ramadan, with focus on religiousness and community. All of our respondents except one made it through the whole period of fasting, although some had physicals symptoms such as headaches, hunger, thirst and dizziness, especially during the first part of the fast. At school, they felt the theoretical part to be more demanding than the practical part. We found that the students had wishes they did not convey to their teachers. The students learned that the teachers did not have the same ability to adjust their teaching routines for Ramadan, as the instructors at the practical vocational training place had.

Overindulgence is widely regarded as a serious social problem in South Africa leading to obesity and associated medical and psychological issues. This study investigated overindulgence from the perspective of Islamic Studies. In the Muslim tradition, overindulgence is regarded as a vice which is contrasted with the virtue of temperance in the Qur’an and the Hadith. There is a long tradition of Muslim virtue ethics that draws from Greek philosophy but also from medieval Arabic sources. This study required an overview of such literature in order to profile contemporary discourse on the virtue of temperance against this historical background. Even though the virtue of temperance is praised, and the vice of overindulgence is frowned upon in Muslim communities, this does preclude overindulgence amongst Muslims, not even in the holy month of Ramadan. This may be understood in terms of the classic problem of moral formation where it is recognised that virtue cannot be taught. Knowledge of the good does not suffice for the realisation of the good. In terms of this study, this begs the question what kind of considerations play a role in motivating some Muslims to overindulge despite Muslim teachings in this regard, even amidst contexts of food insecurity. In this study, I investigated the perceptions of such considerations found within Muslim households associated with the Rylands and Belhar mosques. This required a Qualitative Approach where Semi-structured Interviews were conducted with around 10 households associated with each of these mosques. The local Imam in each case was asked to select ten such households of good moral standing. These interviews were recorded and analysed in order to describe the perceptions amongst Muslims of good moral standing with regards to the considerations that play a role in habits of over-indulgence. The study found several determinants of overindulgence within the selected Muslim households associated with the Rylands and Belhar mosques namely, food insecurity, spiritual apathy, emotional eating, conspicuous and hedonistic consumption as well as social environmental cues. However, food insecurity was exclusive to the Muslim community of Belhar who are distinctive from the inhabitants of Rylands in terms of social-economic status as well as race. This community is largely of Malay origin and is disadvantaged economically compared to their counterparts who are predominantly of Indian descent and enjoy a high-income status. The study found in both communities that Ramadan; a month of restraint, self-reflection, devotion, and worship had been turned into a month of indulgence and unhealthy eating. It was perceived that most Muslims squeeze a five-course meal in the few hours they can eat. The research further revealed that such individuals to be very meticulous of what type of food they consume when breaking their fast and would prefer oily fried foods to healthy food. This causes weight gain, health complications and sluggishness which stands in the way of worship. It was concluded that the majority gain weight due to their lifestyles. With regards to the implementation of moral formation, the study revealed self-discipline, leading by example and parents, educators and leaders playing an active role to be key in the formation of good morals. Additionally, the study found good moral formation can be achieved through habituation. Finally, the study found that the major constraints to moderate and healthy eating to be lack of self-discipline, the absence of virtue ethical education in Islamic institutions and finally Muslim leaders have prioritized the ḥalãl aspect of food and in the interim have forgotten to preach the importance of wholesome pure foods. The explanations offered in this study indicated the importance of the virtue of temperance in the fight against obesity and in the attainment of physical and spiritual wellbeing. This virtue which is a mean between two vices, namely self-indulgence and insensibility help in the journey towards a higher lifestyle and helps release all the dynamic forces that spiritually weigh down those in affluent as well as food insecure communities.

Ramadan is one of the longest periods of religious fasting. Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for the month of Ramadan. In patients with diabetes, dietary changes during Ramadan can influence the glycaemic control. Since Ramadan is a key part of the Islamic faith, many Muslims with diabetes are willing to endure the hardship and choose to fast. The thesis included discussions on the physiology and the practice of fasting in different religious groups. The current evidence for the optimum diabetes management during Ramadan was reviewed and recommendations were made based on randomised, comparison and observational studies and expert consensus. The practice of fasting among pregnant women with diabetes was assessed in North West London in a questionnaire-based survey. Only 10% of women fasted. Having diabetes and hypoglycaemia were the likely deterrent factors. Imams (religious advisors) were as important as healthcare professionals in advising about fasting. The glycaemic variability in patients with diabetes who followed the recommendations for optimal diabetes management was studied using continuous glucose monitoring. The glycaemic variability during fasting and non-fasting periods of Ramadan was similar, suggesting that pre-Ramadan assessment was useful in negating glycaemic excursions during Ramadan. Changing to Humalog Mix 50 insulin at Iftar (sunset meal) in type 2 diabetes patients that were on twice daily Human Mixtard 30 insulin minimised their risk of hypoglycaemia without compromising their glycaemic control during Ramadan. The incretin-based therapies were more suitable than gliclazide when considering an add-on to metformin for type 2 diabetes patients who planned to fast for Ramadan. In summary, the main aim of pre-Ramadan assessment and therapeutic adjustments is to allow patients with type 2 diabetes to fast safely during Ramadan.

After defeating the Iraqi military, Coalition Forces spread out across Iraq to stabilize and transition control of the country back to Iraqis. This historical analysis of Mosul, Ramadi, and Samarra studies military operations intended to stabilize these three cities from April 2003 to September 2005. Prior to and after the reestablishment of Iraqi sovereignty, Coalition Forces worked with Iraqi citizens at the local level to reestablish control of the population. In order to achieve this, the counterinsurgent force must understand that when consensus for non-violent political opposition does not exist within the governed populace, coercive measures must be taken to enforce local security. This analysis evaluates the effects of military operations over time and through frequent unit transitions with varying numbers of U.S. and Iraqi security forces. The conclusions gleaned from this analysis are summarized as unit approaches that either achieved control or failed to achieve control at the local level. This study suggests that a distributed lightto- medium equipped ground force operating within urban centers and in continuous close proximity to the population is best able to establish local control and partner with local police and military forces. This force should be enabled with language and cultural skills. Necessary combat multipliers include human intelligence collectors and social network analysts.

From the existential conflict between I vs False ego, as enunciated by ancient mythology, this work investigates the interpretation s possibility of this duality nowadays. This way it is examined on these two temporal contexts the conflict between the man element, or even his soul, often designed as I, and his false ego, or false perception of himself. It starts with the analysis of an antiquity s literary source whose narrative explicitly shows this topic, the Bhagavad-Gita, and sequentially it is taken as object a mediatic verbal-visual-spatial text of the present time, the graphic novel Ramayan 3392 AD. By exploring this question on the first text it is aimed to identify it in the graphic novel, therefore examining the theme s continuity, which according to this point of view is originated in antiquity and kept in nowadays media. Thus it is looked forward to prove this interpretation s possibility in mediatic texts, to prove how this opposition can be considered a connection between different mythologies; and to analyze how the duality is structured at the present times, through comic books research. As important points are considered the changes that occur in the value of sacred, whose investment is existent in the ancient mythology connected to religiosity, but not in comic books generality, not explicitly at least. As theoretical basis to this problematic s analysis on the study corpus, it is used the referential of Greimas discursive semiotics and its development on Landowski s socio-semiotics, while for observations regarding mythologies, beyond these semioticists works and others , it is mainly taken this question s approach by Cassirer. It can be pointed that there is dissolution of the value of sacred, represented in ancient mythology by emphasis and detailing of the mystical and religious theme, while the subject hero s characterization by a duty is kept, in a way that the mystical religious value becomes an ethical value in the nowadays text, being kept in both texts the modalization by should as invariable. Furthermore, mediatic texts bring a differentiated appeal to sensible experience, through plastic components, which alongside with the verbal plane add another meaning s dimension to the narrative; a meaning that is also considered from the ancient text s prescription concerning the existential conflict examined, leading to the formation of a chromatic schematization connected to this opposition. As conclusions it is obtained a possible interpretation of the euphoric subjects as attached to cognitive instances, and of the dysphoric subject as associated to the somatic actancial instance precisely, in an assemblage constitutive of a single macro-subject. From myth to media rises the main change which is the passage from the direct holy s revelation to the detachment of aesthesic sensibility as key piece on the subject s formation. This mechanism allows the sensibility s perception as responsible for making feel the new proposition of the existential conflict that is undeniably of all times
A partir do conflito existencial definido como Eu vs Falso ego, conforme enunciado pela mitologia da antiguidade, este trabalho investiga a possibilidade de interpretação desta dualidade em textos midiáticos da atualidade. Desta forma, examina-se nestes dois contextos temporais o confronto entre o elemento homem, ou mesmo sua alma, frequentemente denominado Eu, e seu falso ego, ou falsa percepção de si mesmo. Parte-se da análise de uma fonte literária da antiguidade cuja narrativa apresenta explicitamente este tópico, o Bhagavad-Gita, e em seguida toma-se como objeto um texto midiático verbi-visual-espacial atual, a história em quadrinhos Ramayan 3392 AD. Explorando esta questão na primeira obra, busca-se identificá-la na história em quadrinhos, abordando assim a continuidade do tema, que de acordo com este ponto de vista surge na antiguidade e se mantém nas mitologias e mídias atuais. Procura-se então provar a possibilidade dessa interpretação nos textos midiáticos, provar como esta oposição pode ser considerada uma conexão entre as diferentes mitologias; e analisar como a dualidade é estruturada na atualidade, por meio da pesquisa sobre histórias em quadrinhos. Como ponto importante são consideradas as alterações que ocorrem no valor sacralizador, cujo investimento é presente na mitologia antiga ligada à religiosidade, mas não nas histórias em quadrinhos em sua generalidade, ao menos não de forma explícita. Como base teórica para as análises dessa problemática nos objetos do corpus de estudo é utilizado o referencial da semiótica discursiva de Greimas e o seu desenvolvimento na sociossemiótica de Landowski, enquanto para observações referentes a mitologias, além dos estudos desses e de outros semioticistas, é tomada a abordagem desta questão por Cassirer, principalmente. Pode-se apontar que há a dissolução do valor sagrado, representado na mitologia antiga pelo enfoque e detalhamento do tema místico e religioso, enquanto é mantida a caracterização do sujeito herói por um dever, de forma que o dever místico religioso passa a ser um dever ético no texto atual, sendo em ambos os textos a modalização por dever mantida como invariável. Além disso, os textos midiáticos trazem um apelo diferenciado à experiência sensível, por meio dos componentes plásticos, que junto ao plano verbal conferem outra dimensão de significação à narrativa; significação esta que é considerada também a partir da prescrição do texto antigo em relação ao conflito existencial abordado, levando à formação de uma esquematização cromática ligada a essa oposição. Como conclusões obtém-se uma interpretação possível dos sujeitos eufóricos como ligados às instâncias cognitivas, e do sujeito disfórico como associado à instância actancial somática propriamente, em um conjunto constituidor de um macrossujeito único. A principal alteração que emerge do mito na mídia é a passagem da revelação direta do sagrado ao destacamento da sensibilidade estésica como peça chave na constituição do sujeito. Esse mecanismo possibilita a percepção da sensibilidade como responsável por fazer sentir a nova proposição do confronto existencial que é incontestavelmente de todos os tempos
