Abstract:
AbstractToucans (Ramphastidae) have always attracted researcher’s attention for their exuberant bill shape and size, which function has been often related to feeding strategies and thermal regulation. In this study, we discuss the importance and use of the bill by Ramphastidae species in intraspecific disputes. We present novel data and video recordings on agonistic encounters between females of the Spot-billed Toucan Selenidera maculirostris, along with a compilation of data from the Brazilian citizen science platform WikiAves and previous studies on six other Ramphastidae species. Abstract In contrast to the ‘avian-like’ diploid number (2n = 80), most toucans and aracaris (Piciformes: Ramphastidae) have divergent karyotypes, exhibiting a higher 2n. To identify the chromosomal rearrangements that shaped the karyotype of these species, we applied chicken macrochromosome paints 1–10 and 11 microsatellite sequences to the chromosomes of two representative species, Pteroglossus inscriptus and Ramphastos tucannus tucannus. Paints of chicken chromosomes revealed that at least the first five ancestral chromosomes have undergone fissions, and a fusion between a segment of chicke

Summary Ramphastidae (Aves: Piciformes) are animals recognized for their exuberant colours and long bill, with distribution range from south Mexico to north Argentina. They are important seed dispersers eating little vertebrates eventually. When in captivity, animals usually live in limited spaces, with high density and near by species that do not share a evolution history, facilitating the occurrence of infectious diseases for what they may not have a competent immune system against, including the parasitic ones.
