Abstract:

Ramsay Hunt is a rare condition of acute herpes zoster. A painful rash/sores in or near the ear (herpes zoster oticus) and facial weakness/paralysis — are the main hallmarks of Ramsay Hunt. These two symptoms don’t always occur together at the same time. In most cases, only one side of the face is affected. The condition is caused by a viral infection of the facial nerve. Ramsay-Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a disease caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion. It may be one of the common reasons of the facial palsy. Symptoms of the RHS include vesicular rash on the auricle, external auditory canal, soft palate, pharynx, facial nerve paralysis, ear pain, tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss. Context: Ramsay Hunt syndrome is uncommon, with an incidence of 5 / 100,000 people (1), characterized by the triad of ipsilateral peripheral facial paralysis, otalgia and vesicles in the ear canal and / or auricular pavilion (1,2,3).
