Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the ecological changes that occurred in 19th century California due to Spanish Colonial and Mexican Period cattle ranching. Grasslands in particular are often depicted as having been rapidly invaded by exotic Old World grasses. In addition, cattle ranching and ecological change are thought to be a factor in the decision making of Native Californians to enter the Spanish missions. Wilder Ranch California State Park, formerly known as Rancho Refugio, is used as a case study to explore these issues. Originally established as a rancho of Mission Santa Cruz, Wilder Ranch remained an operating ranch until the 1970s, and thus provides an excellent venue to explore the long- term effects of cattle ranching. To analyze the rate and intensity of grassland change at Wilder Ranch, a combination of zooarchaeological analysis, archaeobotanical analysis, historical records, and agent based modeling is used. These lines of evidence together indicate that grasslands were altered by exotic grasses, but not at the rate and intensity that is often suggested. In addition, analysis of baptismal records from nearby Mission Santa Cruz indicate that most local Native Californians had joined the mission before cattle herds had grown much in size, and before extensive ecological change is expected to have occurred. Instead, a combination of drought and social network collapse seem more influential in the decision of local Native Californians to join the mission.

Abstract:
The initiatives of open space conservation, as outlined in the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, have been implemented through the purchase of nearly 65 thousand acres by Pima County. This land abuts sections of grazing leases held by state and federal agencies, forming largely unfragmented landscapes surrounding the city's urban core. Much of the outlying acreage is rural historic working ranches, now managed as open space conservation preserves. Ranches are landscapes of low-intensity impact, where the archaeological record of centuries of human land use is well preserved. Much of the land, however, remains relatively unstudied. To refine spatial predictions of archaeologically sensitive areas in southern Pima County, I use multivariate logistic regression to develop predictive models of probable archaeological site locations for three time periods at Rancho Seco as a case study. Results suggest portions Rancho Seco might contain additional Preceramic and Historic cultural resources but additional data collection is needed.

This thesis analyzes the urbanization processes embodied in the town of Rancho Queimado and these relations with the urban expansion of the Grande Florianopolis. In this analysis, examine the relationship of those processes with the new territorial logics that emerge in the last quarter of the twentieth century, from the redefinition of the nature, of changes in conceptions of urbanity and rurality, and the development of technologies that alter the notion of time and space. These changes enabled the action of the real estate industry and tourism in new areas, intensifying a model of urban sprawl. Recently, Florianópolis started to have more media exposure, having your image associated with natural beauty and quality of life. This publicity contributes to attract populations and consequent urban sprawl. Accompanying this process, the firms in the regional real estate market had significant growth. In this context, Rancho Queimado, place with a social formation connected to agricultural activities in recent years has been inserting in the regional context, too, to stem from relationship of other activities that gained expression in the local economy under the influence of tourism, the second homes and tourist enterprises. A major factor in changing the spatial order in the city is the action of the regional real estate industry that, in seeking to leverage their profits, has launched residential ventures, similar to urban condominiums, but on rural areas in the municipality of Rancho Queimado, triggering consequences at local and regional socio-spatial dynamics.

Abstract:
Swanton Pacific Ranch is an educational and research facility owned by the Cal Poly Corporation and managed by the Cal Poly State University (Cal Poly) College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. Located about 180 miles north of campus and just 14 miles north of Santa Cruz, California on Highway 1, the property was first leased to and then donated to Cal Poly by the late Albert E. Smith in 1993. The rancho’s original inhabitants included Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, as well as various European immigrants and their descendants; currently, the staff, faculty, and students of Cal Poly occupy the land. Each of these groups used the land’s rich environment for a variety of purposes from subsistence to financial and intellectual pursuits. Over time, researchers and local historians have discussed specific aspects of the Swanton Pacific Ranch and its environs, particularly concerning its occupants, land use (e.g. businesses, farming, research), and land features (e.g. geology, botany). The following work offers a more cohesive, descriptive narrative of the land and its people organized chronologically from prehistory to the present.

Using characters from these data sets a cladistic analysis using parsimony reconstructed a phylogeny of thes frogs...Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony found three equally parsimonious trees. Subsequent character reanalysis (successive weighting) produced one parsimonious tree. The phylogenies indicate multiple invasion events into the Solomon Islands by these ranid frogs and despite the high level of endemism, monophyly is not supported."

Abstract:
This thesis project came about from a desire to establish a relationship between the built form and the landscape that it inhabits - a ranch in central Texas. I began with a program of a house, stable, horse riding arena, ranch hand living, and various other service buildings. I decided to organize the buildings along a linear spine down a gradual hillside on the property. The limestone block spine walls begin at a wind pump tower which provides well water for horses to drink and bathe in. A clear structural hierarchy exists in the buildings. I was interested in the relationship between the stacking of the walls and making a framework out of wood and steel. Details were resolved with special consideration for the materials and their natural qualities and properties. The project achieves a sense of connection to the site. It brings to light some of the materials, methods, and vernacular practices of the region.

Abstract:
The main focus of many agricultural, ecological and environmental studies is to develop well designed, cost-effective and efficient sampling designs. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is one of those sampling methods that can help accomplish such objectives by incorporating prior information and expert knowledge to the design. In this thesis, new RSS schemes are suggested for efficiently estimating the population mean. These sampling schemes can be used as cost-effective alternatives to the traditional simple random sampling (SRS) and RSS schemes. It is shown that the mean estimators under the proposed sampling schemes are at least as efficient as the mean estimator with SRS. We consider the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) and the best linear invariant estimators (BLIEs) for the unknown parameters (location and scale) of a location-scale family of distributions under double RSS (DRSS) scheme. The BLUEs and BLIEs with DRSS are more precise than their counterparts based on SRS and RSS schemes. We also consider the BLUEs based on DRSS and ordered DRSS (ODRSS) schemes for the unknown parameters of a simple linear regression model using replicated observations. It turns out that, in terms of relative efficiencies, the BLUEs under ODRSS are better than the BLUEs with SRS, RSS, ordered RSS (ORSS) and DRSS schemes. Quality control charts are widely recognized for their potential to be a powerful process monitoring tool of the statistical process control. These control charts are frequently used in many industrial and service organizations to monitor in-control and out-of-control performances of a production or manufacturing process. The RSS schemes have had considerable attention in the construction of quality control charts. We propose new exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts for monitoring the process mean and the process dispersion based on the BLUEs obtained under ORSS and ODRSS schemes. We also suggest an improved maximum EWMA control chart for simultaneously monitoring the process mean and dispersion based on the BLUEs with ORSS scheme. The proposed EWMA control charts perform substantially better than their counterparts based on SRS and RSS schemes. Finally, some new EWMA charts are also suggested for monitoring the process dispersion using the best linear unbiased absolute estimators of the scale parameter under SRS and RSS schemes.

Varadarajan, Ramakrishna R. "Ranked Search on Data Graphs." FIU Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/220.

Full text
Abstract:
Graph-structured databases are widely prevalent, and the problem of effective search and retrieval from such graphs has been receiving much attention recently. For example, the Web can be naturally viewed as a graph. Likewise, a relational database can be viewed as a graph where tuples are modeled as vertices connected via foreign-key relationships. Keyword search querying has emerged as one of the most effective paradigms for information discovery, especially over HTML documents in the World Wide Web. One of the key advantages of keyword search querying is its simplicity – users do not have to learn a complex query language, and can issue queries without any prior knowledge about the structure of the underlying data. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop techniques for user-friendly, high quality and efficient searching of graph structured databases. Several ranked search methods on data graphs have been studied in the recent years. Given a top-k keyword search query on a graph and some ranking criteria, a keyword proximity search finds the top-k answers where each answer is a substructure of the graph containing all query keywords, which illustrates the relationship between the keyword present in the graph. We applied keyword proximity search on the web and the page graph of web documents to find top-k answers that satisfy user’s information need and increase user satisfaction. Another effective ranking mechanism applied on data graphs is the authority flow based ranking mechanism. Given a top-k keyword search query on a graph, an authority-flow based search finds the top-k answers where each answer is a node in the graph ranked according to its relevance and importance to the query. We developed techniques that improved the authority flow based search on data graphs by creating a framework to explain and reformulate them taking in to consideration user preferences and feedback. We also applied the proposed graph search techniques for Information Discovery over biological databases. Our algorithms were experimentally evaluated for performance and quality. The quality of our method was compared to current approaches by using user surveys.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consider either (i) f = f1 ⊠ f2 for two Maass cusp forms for SLm(ℤ) and SLm′(ℤ), respectively, with 2 ≤ m ≤ m′, or (ii) f= f1 ⊠ f2 ⊠ f3 for three weight 2k holomorphic cusp forms for SL2(ℤ). Let λf(n) be the normalized coefficients of the associated L-function L(s, f), which is either (i) the Rankin-Selberg L-function L(s, f1 ×f2), or (ii) the Rankin triple product L-function L(s, f1 ×f2 ×f3). First, we derive a Voronoi-type summation formula for λf (n) involving the Meijer G-function. As an application we obtain the asymptotics for the smoothly weighted average of λf (n) against e(αnβ), i.e. the asymptotics for the associated resonance sums. Let ℓ be the degree of L(s, f). When β = 1/ℓ and α is close or equal to ±ℓq 1/ℓ for a positive integer q, the average has a main term of size |λf (q)|X 1/2ℓ+1/2 . Otherwise, when α is fixed and 0 < β < 1/ℓ it is shown that this average decays rapidly. Similar results have been established for individual SLm(ℤ) automorphic cusp forms and are due to the oscillatory nature of the coefficients λf (n).

Full text
Abstract:
Data entities from various data sources could be ordered according to a variety of attributes associated with those entities. These orderings result in a ranking of entities in terms of the values in the attribute domains. In query processing, user preferences are desired to be tied to values of specific rank attributes. A way to incorporate such preference is by utilizing a function f that combines user preferences and rank attribute values and returns numerical value. Top-k queries seek to identify the tuples with the highest numerical value. We consider the top-k selection query on relational database: SELECT * FROM S ORDER BY f(t) LIMIT k.We propose efficient indexes on S to find the top-k tuples, for a given linear monotone preference function f . The efficiency of our approach depends on the number of dimensions: the number of rank attributes used to compute f . We present efficient algorithms for two dimensions. Our results for two dimensions improve upon Tsaparas et. al. Our approach is based on convex layers, which is more appropriate for linear preference function.

Abstract:
Imagine your local creamery administers a survey asking their patrons to choose their five favorite ice cream flavors. Any data collected by this survey would be an example of partially ranked data, as the set of all possible flavors is only ranked into subsets of the chosen flavors and the non-chosen flavors. If the creamery asks you to help analyze this data, what approaches could you take? One approach is to use the natural symmetries of the underlying data space to decompose any data set into smaller parts that can be more easily understood. In this work, I describe how to use permutation representations of the symmetric group to create and study efficient algorithms that yield such decompositions.

Personalized recommendation modules have become an integral part of most consumer information systems. Whether you are looking for a movie to watch, a restaurant to dine, or a news article to read, the number of available option has exploded significantly. Furthermore, the commensurate growth in data collection and processing has created a unique opportunity, where the successful identification of a relevant/desired item in a timely and efficient manner can have serious ramifications for the underlying business in terms of consumer satisfaction, operational efficiency, or both. Taken together, these developments create a need for a principled, scalable, and efficient approach for distilling the available consumer data into compact and accurate representations that can be utilized for making inference about future behavior and preference. In this work, we address the problem of providing such recommendations using ranked data, both as system input and output . In particular, we consider two concrete, and interrelated, scenarios, that capture a large number of applications in a variety of domains. In the first scenario, we consider a set-up where the desired goal is to identify a single global ranking, as we would in a tournament. This setup is analogous to the problem of rank aggregation, historically studied in political science and economics, and more recently in computer science and operations research. In the second scenario, we extend the setup to include multiple 'prominent' rankings. Taken together, these rankings reflect the intrinsic heterogeneity of the population, where each ranking can be viewed as a profile for a subset of said population. In both scenarios, the goal is to (i) devise a model to explain and compress the data, (ii) provide efficient algorithms to identify the relevant ranking for a given user, and (iii) provide a theoretical characterization of the difficulty of this task together with conditions under which this difficulty can be avoided. To that end, and drawing on ideas from econometrics and computer science, we propose a model for the single ranking problem where the data is assumed to be generated from a Multi-Nomial Logit (MNL) model, a parametric probability distribution over permutations used in applications ranging from the ranking of players in online gaming platforms to the pricing of airline tickets. We then devise a simple algorithm for learning the underlying ranking directly from data, and show that this algorithm is consistent for a large subset of the so called Random Utility Models (RUM). Building on the insight from the single ranking case, we handle the multiple ranking scenario using a mixture of Multi-Nomial Logit models. We then provide a theoretical illustration of the difficulty in learning models from this class, which is not surprising given the richness of the model class, and the notorious difficulties inherent in dealing with ranked data. Finally, we devise a simple algorithm for estimating the model under plausible realistic conditions, together with theoretical guarantees on the performance together with an experimental evaluation.

It argues that visibility is important for each author: for Rancière the making visible of particular existents; for Butler the making visible of violences; and for Cavarero the making visible of another’s uniqueness. However, these commitments to visibility reach a limit when confronted with those who exist in indifference to visibility, for example, the fugitive politics of the enslaved as detailed by Saidiya Hartman. In these instances there is a danger that a fugitive politics is overlooked if visibility is one’s primary frame of analysis. This thesis is interdisciplinary, bringing each author into conversation with the others but not attempting to synthesise their thought into a whole, nor to resolve the tensions in their work by privileging one author over the others. Instead, and following Rancière, it reads each author for their aesthetic contribution to making sense of the world with the aim of identifying the forms of existence that are opened up in their work, but also those that are closed down. The first chapter identifies themes of visibility in Rancière’s account of politics, arguing that there is an ambivalence in Rancière’s politics but that in either case politics is linked to the making visible of forms of existence that are otherwise rendered insensitive. The second and third chapters identify themes of visibility in Butler’s account of violence, arguing that Butler’s reflections on violence’s visibility are overlooked in her consideration of nonviolence. The fourth and fifth chapters identify themes of visibility in Cavarero’s work, arguing that her insistence on making another’s uniqueness visible is made urgent because of scenes of violence. The sixth chapter argues that Butler and Cavarero’s work should be understood as an insurrectionary humanism centred on the paraontology of vulnerability. The seventh chapter reads Rancière, Butler and Cavarero in relation to Hannah Arendt, arguing that it is Arendt’s proximity to each author that enables a politics of fugitivity to become tangible in their work. The eighth chapter reads Rancière, Butler and Cavarero against Saidiya Hartman’s account of the Middle Passage, plantation slavery and its legacies to demonstrate the limits of their commitment to visibility and to further manifest a sense of a fugitive politics indifferent to visibility.

Abstract:
The effects of AroclorRTM1242 exposure on developing amphibians were examined by exposing southern leopard frogs, Rana sphenocephala, to a contaminated diet throughout the larval period. Treatment groups consisted of an untreated control, a solvent control, 17beta-estradiol, and three PCB doses (10, 100, and 1000 mug/g). PCB accumulation and biotransformation were examined. Effects of PCB exposure on metamorphosis and sexual differentiation were assessed. PCB accumulation was not statistically different between the egg masses. Levels of PCBs in the tissues differed in a dose related manner. Within treatments, body weight appeared to be the major factor correlated with PCB concentration. Congener patterns varied between AroclorRTM1242 and tadpole tissues. Hydroxybiphenyls were not detected in individual tadpoles, but were present in pooled samples. Mortality was similar among the treatment groups. The untreated food control had slightly higher mortality. The effects of AroclorRTM 1242 exposure differed between the egg masses. From the first egg mass, there were no treatment differences in the proportion of survivors metamorphosing. Treatment with 17beta-estradiol affected sexual differentiation relative to the controls. Exposure to AroclorRTM1242 had no effect. This may be due to the nature of gonadal maturation in this population, which was entirely female. In the second egg mass, PCB treatment was associated with an increased rate of metamorphosis in the highest dose. The high dose significantly (alpha = .05) altered sexual differentiation relative to the solvent control (88% female). This effect was similar to 17beta-estradiol treatment (94% female). Exposure to high and medium doses of PCBs produced five individuals with asynchronous gonads. The effect of body weight on PCB levels may be a result of greater ingestion of the contaminated diet by larger animals, relative to their smaller siblings. The apparent stimulation of metamorphosis in the second egg mass by PCB exposure may be due to an endocrine disrupting effect on the corticosterone "stress" axis. A thyroid-mediated mechanism of effect is also possible. While the effects on sexual differentiation may be due to estrogenic activity, a corticosterone-like effect cannot be ruled out. Higher level endocrine function, such as feedback regulation, could also be affected.

Abstract:
It is demonstrated that a perturbation theory for the Coulomb Gap can be developed, which is identical to the TAP approach to spin glasses. Thus chapter 2 presents the standard theoretical method used to study the Coulomb Gap, together with the analogous result in spin-glass theory. Chapter 3 begins the exposition of new work contained in the thesis. The example of the classical dipole fluid is used to demonstrate how classical spin systems with long-ranged interactions can be expanded as a series of Feynman diagrams. A similar method, taking account of the disorder in the Coulomb Gap problem, is used to derive the strong-disorder Coulomb Gap density of states as a leading set of Feynman diagrams. In the next chapter, it is shown that the assumption of single-parameter scaling enables the use of the Renormalization Group to derive such non-perturbative effects as the crossover to weak disorder, and edge effects within the Coulomb Gap fluid. In chapter 5, it is shown that the analogy with spin glasses enables the use of the replica trick to obtain an effective field theory for the Coulomb Gap, which resembles the Sine-Gordon model in statistical physics. This resemblance allows a systematic derivation of the RG scaling function to any accuracy and a study of the renormalizability of the effective field theory, leading in principle to a test of the single-parameter scaling hypothesis. The second part of the thesis considers the optical phonons in a disordered ionic crystal, and in chapter 6 it is shown that the use of projection operators together with the standard techniques of perturbation theory enables a derivation of the phonon density of states. The result is that the longitudinal and transverse optic phonon modes are broadened by disorder into semicircular bands, and is identical to the result for the disorder-broadened Landau levels in a metal. Inspired by this similarity, methods of perturbation theory and supersymmetry have been applied to deriving the transport properties of the phonons. As described in section 7.2, the lack of a small parameter makes this impossible for the disordered ionic crystal, but the simpler problem of a uniaxial ionic crystal would be suitable for the use of these techniques.

Abstract:
Financial analysts play a key role in collecting, processing and disseminating information for the stock market. Selecting the best analysts among thousands of analysts is an important task for investors that determines future investment profitability. Extensive research has been dedicated to finding the best analysts of the market based on various criteria for different clienteles. The state of the art approach in this process has developed into so-called Star Rankings with lists of top analysts who have previously outperformed their peers. How useful are such star rankings? Do the recommendations of stars have higher investment value than the recommendations of non-stars (i.e., recommendations of Stars “shoot” more precisely before and after selection)? Or do star rankings simply represent the past performance that will regress to the mean in the future (i.e., in reality, Shooting Stars are not stars and quickly disappear from the sky)? The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to empirically investigate the performance of sell-side analysts’ recommendations by focusing on a group of star analysts. This thesis comprises four papers that address two overarching questions. (1) Do star rankings capture any true skill, and, thus, can investors rely on the rankings? (Papers I and II) (2) How do market conditions impact star analysts? (Papers III and IV) Paper I examines the profitability persistence of the investment recommendations from analysts who are listed in the four different star rankings of Institutional Investor magazine, StarMine’s “Top Earnings Estimators”, “Top Stock Pickers” and The Wall Street Journal and shows the predictive power of each evaluation methodology. By investigating the precision of the signals that the various methodologies use in determining who the stars are, the study distinguishes between the star-selection methodologies that capture short-term stock-picking profitability and the methodologies that emphasize the more persistent skills of star analysts. As a result, this study documents that there are star-selection methods that select analysts based on more enduring analyst skills, and, thus, the performance of these methods’ stars persists even after ranking announcements. The results indicate that the choice of analyst ranking is economically important in making investment decisions. Paper II investigates the structure of the portfolios that are built on the recommendations of sell-side analysts and confirms that the abnormal returns are explained primarily by analysts’ stock-picking ability and only partially by the effect of over-weight in small-cap stocks. The study examines the number of stocks in the portfolios and the weights that are assigned to market-cap size deciles and GICS sectors and performs an attribution analysis that identifies the sources of overall value-added performance. Paper III examines the differences in seasonal patterns in the expected returns on target prices between star and non-star analysts. Although the market returns in the sample period do not possess any of the investigated seasonal effects, the results show that both groups of analysts, stars and non-stars, exhibit seasonal patterns and issue more optimistic target prices during the summer, with non-stars being more optimistic than stars. Interestingly, the results show that analysts are highly optimistic in May, which contradicts the adage “Sell in May and go away” but is consistent with the notion of a trade-generating hypothesis: since analysts face a conflict of interests, they may issue biased recommendations and target prices to generate a trade. A detailed analysis reveals that the optimism cycle is related to the calendar of companies’ earnings announcements rather than the market-specific effects. Paper IV discusses how a shift in economic conditions affects the competitiveness of sell-side analysts. The focus is on the changes that were triggered by the financial crisis of 2007-2009 and a post-crisis “uncertainty” period from 2010-2013. The study follows Bagnoli et al. (2008) in using a change in the turnover of rankings as a measure of a transformation in analysts’ competitive advantages. Paper IV extends their research and documents how different ranking systems capture analysts’ ability to handle changes in the economic environment. The results show that market conditions impact analyst groups differently, depending on the group’s competitive advantages.

Abstract:
This thesis conducts historical research into Swanton Pacific Ranch in the County of Santa Cruz, an interdisciplinary facility for education and research managed by Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The study seeks to determine whether there have been discernable changes in vegetation alliances (communities), spatially or in type, within a 110-acre Study Area from the early twentieth century to the present day and how the changes compare with other similar historical analyses in California. Historical farming and ranching uses of the area are researched, and two family case studies are presented as paradigms of potential changes to vegetation as well as the connectivity with the larger socioeconomic context of Italian immigration into California. Examination of the vegetation alliances over the course of the historical study period utilizes several types of historical imagery, including twentieth-century aerial photography, ground level photography and nineteenth-century maps. This thesis diverges from scholarship that posits substantial alteration of ecological systems by anthropogenic activities by arguing that the primary alliances and geospatial borders of the vegetation in the Study area have remained essentially stable, i.e., unchanged at a macro level, since at least the early twentieth century, and that this stability has persisted despite long-term agricultural activities. This thesis contributes to the historiography of Swanton Pacific Ranch by providing a preliminary exploration of the botanic resources and the attendant anthropogenic agricultural activities on the land that may have affected those resources. It provides a framework for further study of Ranch resources as well as the cultural context of the agricultural history of the North Coast-Santa Cruz region.
