Abstract:
At the dawn of democracy, the ANC led government inherited an economy with wide spread socio-economic imbalances and geo-spatial challenges. Since 1994, policies have been put in place to try and close the gap between the haves and the have nots in society. It is twenty years on, and significant in-roads have been made towards improving the lives of the masses. Twenty years has not been enough time however, to eliminate the remnants of the oppressive regime. Since 2004, there has been a steady rise in the number of service delivery protests witnessed across the country. The masses of the poor are showing their dissatisfaction with the slow pace of change and development. Service delivery protests as they are known are community protests driven primarily by complaints around inadequate basic service provision. These protests have however been proven to be about a variety of other complaints against municipalities. These include: lack of proper housing, inadequate job opportunities, and allegations of nepotism, fraud and corruption against municipal officials and a general feeling of alienation from the structures of democracy. These inadequacies and frustrations are compounded in the case of informal settlements, where the most basic of services are scarce. The City of Johannesburg has one hundred and eighty four informal settlements, which present the city with major service provision challenges. A substantial amount of research has been done on the causes of service delivery protests and yet a gap exists in terms of literature on the impact of these on development. The main aim of this study was therefore to determine the impact of service delivery protests on development in the Zandspruit informal settlement. The research was carried out in the form of unstructured and semi-structured interviews with the Ward Councillor for Zandspruit (which is in Ward 114, Region C of the City of Johannesburg), the Ward Administrator, Ward Committee as well as members of the community. The findings of the study show a community in distress, with little or no access to basic services such as water and sanitation. The housing challenges in the area are representative of some of the worst housing challenges faced by the city. Lack of communication and a general distrust between the ward councillor and her ward committee make for very poor ward governance. The apparent apathy shown by the municipality is alarming. The pace of development in Zandspruit is incredibly slow, and not even the often violent service delivery protests witnessed in the area have improved the situation.

The Randburg Waterfront which was built in a residential area in Randburg, officially opened it's doors to the public on the 1st of March 1995. Shortly thereafter complaints and affidavites from unhappy residents started to stream to the management of the Waterfront, Randburg Town Council, as well as police stations and newspapers. Committees were also established by concerned residents to fight their cause. Unfortunately all socio-economic activities of man have both a social and and physical impact on the environment. For this reason, social and environmental impact assessments have become a measuring rod in the twentieth century, whereby the effect of man's socio-economic activities on human beings as well as the environment, can be determined. With the above-mentioned in mind, a study was undertaken in 1995, which was aimed at investigating the positive and/or negative impact of the Randburg Waterfront on the surrounding residential area. The aim of this follow-up study, is to determine the positive and/or negative impact of the Randburg Waterfront on the surrounding residential area, by comparing the results of the 1995 and 1996 data. Questionnaires were used as data gathering method. In 1995, 160 questionnaires were distributed in the testsample area of a 250m radius around the Waterfont, of which 108 (67,5%) were received back. To ensure meaningful comparisons between the data sets of 1995 and 1996, questionnaires, in 1996, were only distributed amongst the 108 residents who responded in 1995. Of these 108 questionnaires, 82 were received back, with a resulting response rate of 75,9%. In chapter 1 of this mini-thesis, background in connection with the Waterfront Development is given. In chapter 2 the potential impacts of the Waterfont on the surrounding residential area are discussed, and the study problem and study methodology are defined. The property on which the Waterfront was developed, as well as the surrounding residential area are dicussed in detail in chapter 3. All information regarding the data gathering process, as well as graphic presentation of the 1995 and 1996 data for visual interpretation, are presented in chapter 4. Chapter 5 entails the analysis of the gathered data, and comparisons are made between the data sets of 1995 and 1996. In closing, a summarised synthesis is given and recommendations are made in chapter 6. The synthesis shows that the Randburg Waterfront, although aesthetically attractive and economically viable to Randburg, has an adverse effect on the surrounding residential area, which has worsened during the past year. The importance of this study is that the results can be used to determine methods whereby the negative impacts of the Waterfront on the surrounding residential area and individuals, can be minimised. Lastly, recommendations are made from an environmental management perspective, in order to mitigate present problems, as well as to prevent potential problems associated with similar development in the future.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of Operational Risk Management (ORM) in the successes of Small Medium Enterprise (SME’s) and to establish whether ORM has a direct correlation to the survival rate of SME’s, which have been operational for a minimum period of five years. The study was limited geographically to Gauteng South Africa, in particular the Kya Sands Industrial area. The South African Government is focusing on promoting small business to reduce the high unemployment rate and to increase the growth of the economy through developing SME’s. Statistics states that South Africa currently has an unemployment rate of 25.5 per cent, in the third quarter of 2015 (Statistic South Africa, 2015), which is the worst rate since the first Labor Forces Survey in 2008. It is well known that SME’s contribute significantly to the world’s economy. After conducting a significant literature review, it was found that no applicable research has been done globally or locally regarding ORM in SME’s as per NG & Kee (2012). Most research in ORM is focused on large organisations, specifically the banking industry. The need for this study arose as literature reviews reveals a high rate of SME failures, regardless of various financial assistance programs from Government for starting and assisting SME’s. In determining the impact of ORM by addressing the high probability of failure of SME’s in emerging markets this research will be the first step in determining the value and trajectory of additional insights for SME sustainability . Thus ORM could indirectly provide assistance in undertaking and addressing the unemployment and economic freedom challenges in South Africa. This is unique and new knowledge generating ground breaking finding s as ORM was not regarded nor researched, as a critical contributing success factor for smaller companies. This research had a positive approach and was of a quantitative and exploratory nature to investigate the research question and problem statements. The research instrument was a self-designed semi-structured enumerated questionnaire. Personal ii interviews were conducted with willing participants in order to obtain first hand data. This was an avant-garde study. The results based on the facts and perception of the owners and managers indicated the extent of implementation of ORM in the various business departments of the SME’s. It was found that ORM is a contributing factor regarding the success of SME’s. As a result, the main research problem and sub- problems were answered. Therefore ORM definitely plays a vital role in the survival rate of a SME and can be regarded as a critical success factor for SME’s if implemented and managed. Through identifying the facts and perceptions of the owners and managers of SME’s regarding ORM, further research can be conducted to identify the extent that ORM can have on the SME’s successes.

Abstract:
People dying of HIV/AIDS and the delay in finding a cure has put education programmes at the centre of HIV/AIDS management. The study purpose is to investigate the effects of Life Orientation programme on HIV/AIDS prevention knowledge, attitudes and behaviours amongst college students at a TVET College in Randburg. A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional design was used, and a questionnaire was administered to level 1 students (n=141). Data was collected, and analysed using SPSS version 25. The findings showed a relationship between Life Orientation (LO) and knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of students towards HIV/AIDS. Students with high Life Orientation perception reported adequate knowledge and positive attitudes. Many respondents revealed high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, healthy behaviour and positive attitude towards HIV/AIDS, showing that Life Orientation had aided in those areas. However, some students had poor perceptions of HIV/AIDS knowledge, henceforth lacked the confidence to protect themselves. Several recommendations to health promoters, education policymakers and the community were given.

Abstract:
The principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) have been used in the business, commercial and industrial sectors to improve both product and service. In a limited number of schools worldwide, there have been attempts to adapt TQM theory and practice to the educational management of institutions. In this thesis there has been an attempt to adapt the TQM philosophy to the field of educational practice. Quality tools and techniques used in TQM organisations have been studied to ascertain their applicability in schools. During the course of the study, the researcher discerned the need to give TQM a distinct identity within the domain of educational management. In the management of schools, there are philosophies and practices which are different from those encountered in noneducational settings. The concept Total Quality Education (TQE) was used to acknowledge this reality. Action research was done over a three-year period at a South African co-educational public primary school. During the four research cycles of looking, thinking and acting, TQE principles were implemented in the school. Stakeholders such as parents, learners and teachers identified areas for improvement of the quality of education. Areas identified included the curriculum, physical resources, extramural activities, staff development, learning and financial management of the school. Quality tools and techniques were applied by all stakeholders to effect the desired improvements. In the fourth and last cycle of the research a questionnaire was given to a sample of the parent community. Progress made in the improvement of the quality of education provided was noted and areas to be improved further were identified. The researcher submits that TQE can be meaningfully applied in South African schools. The various stakeholders can make contributions to the betterment of schools. Through the application of the principles of the TQE philosophy, it is possible to transform South African schools into institutions where all learners can experience education of true quality.
