Abstract:
The monograph, based on many years of experimental research and analysis of scientific sources, analyzes psychological and pedagogical ideas in the field of children's productive activity and substantiates a new methodology for the development of visual creativity in preschool and primary school children in educational institutions of various types. The educational model of the development of children's visual creativity, proposed and substantiated by the author, creates favorable environmental and methodological conditions for the manifestation of creative initiative, stimulates imaginative thinking, eliminates artistic standards and stereotypes of perception of the world and its expressive display in creative activity, releases the primordial deep experience of imaginative perception of the world by a child and directs it to create a high-quality artistic product when with the help of expressive means mastered by the child during training. The grounded and tested scale of assessment of quality of development of children's fine art and pedagogical technology of development of children's fine art under the influence of artistic standards are presented. For a wide range of readers interested in the upbringing and education of children.

Hainge, Greg. Noise Matters. Bloomsbury Academic, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781501382819.

Full text
Abstract:
Everyone knows what noise is. Or do they? Can we in fact say that one man's noise is another teenager's music? Is noise in fact only an auditory phenomenon or does it extend far beyond this realm? If our common definitions of noise are necessarily subjective and noise is not just unpleasant sound, then it merits a closer look (or listen). Greg Hainge sets out to define noise in this way, to find within it a series of operations common across its multiple manifestations that allow us to apprehend it as something other than a highly subjective term that tells us very little. Examining a wide range of texts, including Sartre's novel Nausea and David Lynch's iconic films Eraserhead and Inland Empire, Hainge investigates some of the Twentieth Century's most infamous noisemongers to suggest that they're not that noisy after all; and it finds true noise in some surprising places. The result is a thrilling and illuminating study of sound and culture.

Wilson, Mark. Physics Avoidance. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803478.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
“Physics avoidance” refers to the fact that we frequently cannot reason about nature in the straightforward manner we anticipate, but must seek alternate policies to address the questions we want answered in a tractable way. Within both science and everyday life, we find ourselves tacitly relying upon thought processes that reach useful answers in opaque and roundabout manners. Conceptual innovators are often puzzled by the techniques they develop, when they stumble across reasoning patterns that are easy to implement but difficult to justify. But simple techniques frequently rest upon complex foundations—a young magician learns how to execute a card guessing trick without understanding how its progressive steps squeeze in on a correct answer. As we collectively improve our inferential skills in this evolving manner, we often wander into unfamiliar explanatory landscapes in which simple words encode physical information in complex and unanticipated ways. We have learned how to reach better conclusions, but we have become baffled by our successes. At its best, philosophical reflection illuminates the natural developmental processes that generate these confusions. But a number of widely shared methodological presumptions currently operate to opposite effect—they obscure the very tactics that advance our descriptive capacities. To correct these misapprehensions, sharper diagnostic tools are wanted. The nine new essays within this collection illustrate this need for finer discriminations through a range of informative cases of historical and contemporary significance.

Choi, Isaac. Infinite Cardinalities, Measuring Knowledge, and Probabilities in Fine-Tuning Arguments. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198798705.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with two different problems in which infinity plays a central role. It first responds to a claim that infinity renders counting knowledge-level beliefs an infeasible approach to measuring and comparing how much we know. There are two methods of comparing sizes of infinite sets, using the one-to-one correspondence principle or the subset principle, and it argues that we should use the subset principle for measuring knowledge. The chapter then turns to the normalizability and coarse tuning objections to fine-tuning arguments for the existence of God or a multiverse. These objections center on the difficulty of talking about the epistemic probability of a physical constant falling within a finite life-permitting range when the possible range of that constant is infinite. Applying the lessons learned regarding infinity and the measurement of knowledge, the chapter hopes to blunt much of the force of these objections to fine-tuning arguments.

Abstract:
This chapter will explicate a new teleological argument for theism, one based on the intelligibility of the universe and the science-friendly character of the laws of nature. Specifically, it begins by presenting some of the preliminary evidence that the fundamental parameters of physics fall in a relatively small range that maximizes our ability to make scientific discoveries. This is called as the “fine-tuning for scientific discovery.” It then shows how this fine-tuning provides potentially powerful new evidence for theism. Unlike the much discussed anthropic fine-tuning (or fine-tuning for life), this kind of fine-tuning cannot be explained by the multiverse hypothesis since it does not encounter an observer-selection effect. Further, it avoids some other objections commonly raised against the anthropic fine-tuning argument, such as the so-called normalizability problem. Consequently, this new fine-tuning argument has the potential of providing an outstanding supplement to the standard anthropic fine-tuning argument for theism.

Full text
Abstract:
Beginning 4,000 or more years ago in the U.S. Southwest and Mexican Northwest, the most varied and sustained interactions between regional inhabitants and the plants of their environments took place within the context of agricultural economies. Even though a recurrent paradigm portrays the Southwest/Northwest as harsh and agriculturally marginal, the region is rich in the archaeological legacy of Indigenous cultivators who produced harvests over three and a half millennia. In recent decades, a finer focus on analytical details, as well as broader comparative approaches to the archaeological record of plants, has expanded the roster of regional crops and culturally enhanced resources, illuminated the nature and scope of culturally modified environments, and explored the roles of plants in a range of economic and social transactions.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the archaeological evidence of dress from later medieval Britain. It includes the often fragmentary textile and leather remains of clothing and shoes, and the dress accessories worn with them. Excavated finds from different types of sites are considered, and the numerous chance finds recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Accessories such as rings, brooches, buckles, badges, and rosaries, made of base or precious metals, gemstones, or other natural materials, were valued for more than their monetary worth. They had the ability to hold memories and beliefs, convey messages, and protect and display identities. Their role in everyday life makes them suitable for inclusion in future studies on the ‘archaeology of emotion’. The article also highlights the relatively slow development of medieval archaeologists’ interest in apparel, and the need for further work that encompasses a range of sources.

Abstract:
This short essay, originally published in The Washington Post only days after the 2016 shooting in the Orlando gay club PULSE, highlights the range of lives and practices that find their space, find their moment in the queer Latinx club. The essay mourns those lost in Orlando by celebrating all the ways people get to the club, share space in the club, and come home from the club. Torres’s writing opens a space not then only for mourning what is lost, but also to celebrate the many reasons queer Latinx people have found refuge and hope in the space of the club, while also acknowledging it is not a utopic space.

Full text
Abstract:
Clusters of disease are often reported to health protection and a finger pointed at a nearby environmental hazard that is thought to be the cause. There is an expectation that the causal linkage will be clarified and action taken to alleviate the resulting anxiety and stop further ill health. Not all reported clusters are real, but all are worth some level of investigation to alleviate anxiety. However, investigating such clusters is not easy. Neither is investigating causal linkages to environmental issues. Using an example of childhood cancer and contaminated land, this chapter takes a stepwise, structured approach to the investigation, defining realistic outcomes and clear criteria to stop such an investigation. The vital role of a multi-agency incident team to integrate health studies and environmental investigations is explored. Readers will be able to undertake such investigations for themselves across a wide range of putative clusters of chronic diseases.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author explores the sacramental theology of Thomas Aquinas and what it says about divine action. The author argues that the divine action of changing the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ is to be taken seriously among theologians and philosophers today, along with the whole range of Christian thought on divine actions in creation, incarnation, and providence. Aquinas’ sacramental theology plays a key role in the development of his overall theological metaphysics. The author then argues that Aquinas’ sacramental causality is coherent, although he finds the metaphysics highly implausible.

Head, Matthew. Fantasia and Sensibility. Edited by Danuta Mirka. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199841578.013.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Fantasia and sensibility are not like other topics. Composed and improvised in all shapes and sizes, fantasias are not reducible to a single type of material. The fantasia was a host genre, a context of topical play, incorporating a range of stylistic and generic references. The frequent use of passages inspired by accompanied recitative and aria reveals an affinity with opera seria. The idea that the fantasia influences other genres is prominent in music criticism only after 1800 and represents an idealist trope foreign to much of the eighteenth century. Sensibility, though thematized in scenes of musical pathos and tenderness which display stylistic commonalities through a range of conventional materials, was not a musical style but a capacity for refined emotional response and sympathetic identification broadly relevant to the project of aesthetics and the fine arts.
