Abstract The purpose of this article is to discuss the relationship between range management practices and reproductive performance of beef cattle. The primary axis of this relationship is via the influence of range management on the nutritional status of the cow and the concomitant effect of nutritional status on reproductive status. Abundant research on beef cattle in confinement has established the relationship of nutritional status on reproductive status. Research evaluating beef cow nutritional responses to range management is more limited, and evaluations of reproductive responses to ran

Grazing trials were conducted on irrigated fall/winter pastures near Maricopa, Arizona where 270 feeder lambs were stocked in 16-ha paddocks to explore the use of grazing behavior as an indicator of forage quantity and quality. Sheep behavior was monitored by filming the grazing periods with a VHS camera and recording the length of time that an individual spent at a feeding station, defined here as a feeding station interval. Other measurements included observed steps between feeding stations (step-sets), feeding stations min⁻¹, steps min⁻¹ and biting rate. As grazing progressed, lambs increas

Between July and September, 1985, 70 ranchers, environmentalists and agency officials participating in three chartered Experimental Stewardship Program (ESP) areas were interviewed. Committee records and agency documents were also examined. As a result of the field work three conclusions were reached: (1) conflicts over grazing decisions have been significantly reduced by the stewardship process, (2) available data is insufficient to support conclusions about changes in the ecological status of the plant communities within the stewardship areas and (3) the annual economic value of rangeland re

The response variable for models consisted of 100 and 82 average soil profile mass water content samples for each ranch, respectively. Half the samples w

Abstract:
Recent years have seen changes in ecological conditions, ownership patterns, and political-legal forces that affect the sustainability of Western range livestock production. Enterprise diversification and implementation of improvements are advocated as ways for ranchers to cope with marginal returns from ranching while better managing resources. However, relatively few ranchers make such substantive changes in their operations, and previous research suggests that rates of adoption may be especially low in Utah. Using a qualitative approach, this study explored innovation adoption among Utah ra
