Despite huge impact of the safety accidents in firing ranges on the military forces and civilians, the preventive measures have been limited and inflexible. In this study, to decrease the accident rate in small arm firing ranges, a methodology was presented to determine danger zones in firing ranges that resulted from direct bullets or ricochets during firing exercises. Usually three levels of signal words, DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION are suggested for warnings that convey high to low degrees of hazard. The purposes of the present research were threefold. The first goal was to examine whether these terms differed in implied hazard level. The second goal was to determine whether an additional group of five words recommended in guidelines or used in previous research differed in connoted hazard level. As an ethicist, I would like to mention one very important axiological danger that occurs in some studies conducted by social scientists on the market especially linked to the invisible hand assumption. It is a danger of moral reductionism that results from assumption that rules of invisible hand are scientific laws. We might say that economic imperialism is not anything special. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter shines a light on what happens in the dark: specifically, we present ethnographic insights from the nightlife economy and how chemicals enable youth to work “24/7.” Producers, promoters, DJs, hosts, artists, performers, drag queens, musicians, stage managers, bartenders, hospitality girls, and dancers from Amsterdam, Brooklyn, Bira (Indonesia), and Puerto Princesa (the Philippines) share with the ChemicalYouth team the various stimulants they use to stay awake and perform their jobs during non-typical working hours, and the other chemicals that they take in order to be able to sleep and recover afterwards. In Chemical 24/7 we compare and contrast the chemical practices of youth working at leisure industry sites in the global North to those of the low-income service sector and manual workers in the global South, and discuss how these different working conditions perpetuate chemical use. Our interlocutors rely on a range of chemicals for their work and social lives, and they develop practices to moderate their use in order to avoid adverse effects. Yet their practices differ depending on the availability, marketing, and policing of the substances.

The conclusion traces the expansion of the child safety regime in the George W. Bush and Barack Obama years, looking specifically at the global reach of this regime through the 2003 PROTECT Act, the 2006 Adam Walsh Act, and the International Megan’s Law implemented in 2016. It reveals the continuities between the country’s major political parties on matters of child safety and criminal justice while also analyzing various forms of resistance against the child safety regime and mass incarceration—namely the “free range” movement, the Right on Crime initiative, and the popular cultural push to “humanize” those deemed sex offenders. In closing, the conclusion charts a path for dismantling the child safety regime and the carceral state.

This chapter provides information on the physical and mathematical models of forest fuel layer ignition by the metal or non-metal particle heated up to high temperatures. Mathematically, the forest fuel layer ignition is described by a system of equations of heat conduction and diffusion with the corresponding initial and boundary conditions. Scenario modeling of forest fuel layer ignition was carried out in the temperature range characteristic to the occurrence of forest fires. A scenario of a catastrophic forest fire danger is considered when there is no moisture in the forest fuel layer.

Chapter 4 explores the continuing operation of the work-concept in postmodern and contemporary dance, as well as a range of ways in which that concept has been challenged. The institutionalisation of choreographic authorship within modern dance is contrasted with critiques of authorship developed through American postmodern and subsequently European conceptual dance, both of which place renewed emphasis on the creative role of the dancer. The chapter also highlights the range of subject matter tackled by Western theatre dance since the mid-twentieth century and the polysemic character of many contemporary dances. It explores how increasing interest in documentation, preservation, and authentic performance are counterbalanced by practices of reinvention and alternative scoring. The chapter argues that, despite explicit challenges to the dance work-concept, it still underpins dance-making and dissemination.

During the interwar years, large numbers of Irish young women came to Liverpool in search of work and new opportunities. Consequently, social purists in Liverpool gave the young Irish woman a starring role in their rhetoric about urban moral danger. Moral patrollers used Irish young women to magnify their broader concerns about young women who worked away from home, moved through cities and engaged in consumer pursuits. This resulted in Irish women in Liverpool being subjected to a network of moral surveillance that was managed via a range of local philanthropic organisations.

Full text
Abstract:
Cognitive behaviour therapy for anxiety disorders is a brief psychological treatment (1 to 16 sessions), based on the cognitive model of emotional disorders. Within this model, it is assumed that it is not events per se, but rather people's expectations and interpretations of events, which are responsible for the production of negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, guilt, or sadness. In anxiety, the important interpretations, or cognitions, concern perceived physical or psychosocial danger. In everyday life, many situations are objectively dangerous. In such situations, individuals’ perceptions are often realistic appraisals of the inherent danger. However, Beck argues that in anxiety disorders, patients systematically overestimate the danger inherent in certain situations, bodily sensations, or mental processes. Overestimates of danger can arise from distorted estimates of the likelihood of a feared event, distorted estimates of the severity of the event, and/or distorted estimates of one's coping resources and the availability of rescue factors. Once a stimulus is interpreted as a source of danger, an ‘anxiety programme’ is activated. This is a pattern of responses that is probably inherited from our evolutionary past and originally served to protect us from harm in objectively dangerous primitive environments (such as attack from a predator). The programme includes changes in autonomic arousal as preparation for flight/fight/fainting and increased scanning of the environment for possible sources of danger. In modern life, there are also situations in which these responses are adaptive (such as getting out of the path of a speeding car). However, when, as in anxiety disorders, the danger is more imagined than real, these anxiety responses are largely inappropriate. Instead of serving a useful function, they contribute to a series of vicious circles that tend to maintain or exacerbate the anxiety disorder. Two types of vicious circle are common in anxiety disorders. First, the reflexively elicited somatic and cognitive symptoms of anxiety become further sources of perceived danger. For example, blushing can be taken as an indication that one has made a fool of oneself, and this may lead to further embarrassment and blushing; or a racing heart may be taken as evidence of an impending heart attack and this may produce further anxiety and cardiac symptoms. Second, patients often engage in behavioural and cognitive strategies that are intended to prevent the feared events from occurring. However, because the fears are unrealistic, the main effect of these strategies is to prevent patients from disconfirming their negative beliefs. For example, patients who fear that the unusual and racing thoughts experienced during panic attacks indicate that they are in danger of going mad and often try to control their thoughts and (erroneously) believe that if they had not done so, they would have gone mad. Within cognitive models of anxiety disorders, at least two different levels of disturbed thinking are distinguished. First, negative automatic thoughts are those thoughts or images that are present in specific situations when an individual is anxious. For example, someone concerned about social evaluation might have the negative thought, ‘They think I'm boring’, while talking to a group of acquaintances. Second, dysfunctional assumptions are general beliefs, which individuals hold about the world and themselves which are said to make them prone to interpret specific situations in an excessively negative and dysfunctional fashion. For example, a rule involving an extreme equation of self-worth with social approval (‘Unless I am liked by everyone, I am worthless’) might make an individual particularly likely to interpret silent spells in conversation as an indication that others think one is boring. Cognitive behaviour therapy attempts to treat anxiety disorders by (a) helping patients identify their negative danger-related thoughts and beliefs, and (b) modifying these cognitions and the behavioural and cognitive processes that normally maintain them. A wide range of procedures are used to achieve these aims, including education, discussion of evidence for and against the beliefs, imagery modification, attentional manipulations, exposure to feared stimuli, and numerous other behavioural assignments. Within sessions there is a strong emphasis on experiential work and on working with high affect. Between sessions, patients follow extensive homework assignments. As in cognitive behaviour therapy for other disorders, the general approach is one of collaborative empiricism in which patient and therapist view the patient's fearful thoughts as hypotheses to be critically examined and tested.

This chapter outlines government concerns about the danger of insurrection in the early nineteenth century and fear of soldiers’ subversion and involvement on the side of radical revolution. It reviews the reality of these claims, analysing soldiers’ involvement in key events and incidents. These range through riots and protests in the 1790s, the distribution of radical handbills subverting troops, the Despard Conspiracy, Luddism, the Post War discontent of 1815-6, working-class drilling and the use of government spies, Peterloo, the Scottish revolt of 1820, the Cato Street Conspiracy, the Queen Caroline agitation, the Reform Crisis of 1831-2, and Chartism. The chapter concludes that whilst some threats were serious, British rank and file soldiers always obeyed officers and did their duty to Crown and country, so revolution was unlikely.

This paper introduces a new concept for robotic search and rescue systems. This system uses a rapidly deployable cable robot to augment existing search and rescue mobile robots. This system can greatly increase the range of mobile robots as well as provide overhead views of the disaster site, allowing rescue workers to reach survivors as quickly as possible while minimizing the danger posed to rescue workers. In addition to the system concept, this paper presents a novel kinematic structure for the cable robot, allowing simple translation-only motion (with moment-resisting capability) and easy

In order to reduce the alarmingly increasing vehicle accident worldwide, developing collision detection system has been an endeavor of engineers within the last 3–4 decades. Based on the vehicles’ speed and acceleration, detecting the safe distance is one of the approaches reported in research results and claimed patents. As speed and acceleration of both the involved vehicles is changing with time, developing effective algorithms that can capture and process sufficient dynamic information and then warn for or take appropriate action is demanded. The development of a generalized navigation safety standard for ships performing underway lightering maneuvers in close proximity has been considered from an operational viewpoint. In general, it is well known that the safety and efficiency of a maritime operation between two ships at close range represents a challenging and demanding task to mariners. The main reason is related to unfamiliar maneuvering behavior of the involved ships and consequently a poor decision-making process due to lack of knowledge and understanding of ship-to-ship interaction effects. Abstract:
The study of motorcycle’s stability is an important task for the passenger’s safety. The range of frequencies involved for the handling stability is lower than 10 Hz. A numerical model was developed to access the stability of a motorcycle vehicle in this frequency range. The stability is analysed using a linearized model around the straight steady state condition. In this condition, the vehicle’s vertical and longitudinal motion are decoupled, hence the model has only four degrees of freedom (steering angle, yaw angle, roll angle and lateral translation), while longitudinal motion is imposed.

At the same time, total and core inflation rates have fallen and remain at low levels, suggesting that a significant element of the reactivation of Colombia’s economy has been related to recovery in potential GDP. This would support the technical staff’s diagnosis of weak aggregate demand and ample excess capacity. The most recently available data on 2020 growth suggests a contraction in economic activity of 6.8%, lowe
