AbstractLet Alg(ℒ) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a normed linear space X leaving invariant each member of the complete lattice of closed subspaces L. We discuss when the subalgebra of finite rank operators in Alg(ℒ) is non-zero, and give an example which shows this subalgebra may be zero even for finite lattices. We then give a necessary and sufficient lattice condition for decomposing a finite rank operator F into a sum of a rank one operator and an operator whose range is smaller than that of F, each of which lies in Alg(ℒ). This unifies results of Erdos, Longstaff, Lambr

If one takes the Mellin transform of an automorphic form for GL(n) and then integrates it along the diagonal on GL(n - 1) then one obtains an automorphic form on GL(n - 1). This gives a rank lowering operator. In this paper a more general rank lowering operator is obtained by combining the Mellin transform with a sum of powers of certain fixed differential operators. The analytic continuation of the rank lowering operator is obtained by showing that the spectral expansion consists of sums of Rankin–Selberg L-functions of type GL(n) × GL(n - 1).

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to settle in the negative an open problem in operator theory, which asks whether in a finite distributive subspace lattice ℒ on a Hilbert space, every finite rank operator of Alg ℒ can be written as a finite sum of rank one operators from Alg ℒ. The counter-example constructed is on a specific Hilbert space realization of the free distributive lattice on three generators and the operator which fails the above property has rank two.

Abstract We present well-resolved RANS simulations of two generic asymmetrically heated cooling channel configurations, a high aspect ratio cooling duct operated with liquid water at $$Re_b = 110 \times 10^3$$ and a cryogenic transcritical channel operated with methane at $$Re_b = 16 \times 10^3$$. The former setup serves to investigate the interaction of turbulence-induced secondary flow and heat transfer, and the latter to investigate the influence of strong non-linear thermodynamic property variations in the vicinity of the critical point on the flow field and heat transfer. To assess the accuracy of the RANS simulations for both setups, well-resolved implicit LES simulations using the adaptive local deconvolution method as subgrid-scale turbulence model serve as comparison databases. The investigation focuses on the prediction capabilities of RANS turbulence models for the flow as well as the temperature field and turbulent heat transfer with a special focus on the turbulent heat flux closure influence.
