Abstract:
Synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform IR (SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy has been developed as a rapid, direct, non-destructive and bioanalytical technique. This technique, taking advantage of synchrotron light brightness and a small effective source size, is capable of exploring the molecular chemistry within the microstructures of a biological tissue without the destruction of inherent structures at ultraspatial resolutions within cellular dimensions. This is in contrast to traditional ‘wet’ chemical methods, which, during processing for analysis, often result in the destruction of the i

AbstractThe Jew’s “fair daughter” in Shakespeare’s playThe Merchant of Veniceconverts and marries a Christian, Lorenzo. Recent attention, however, to changing ideas of race and identity in the early modern period has brought into question the divisions of Christian/Jew/Moor. Can Jessica convert and no longer be considered the Jew’s daughter? As “gentle” and “fair” is she to be considered gentile and in no way dark (spiritually or racially)? Jessica’s conversion has apparently little religious meaning, but rather she is saved from the Jew her father by marriage to Lorenzo, who becomes Shylock’s

AbstractThis paper explores the Nazi view of nature as violent but orderly, contrasted with what the Nazis took to be the chaos and confusion of human society. In imposing strict authoritarian controls, the Nazis strove to emulate what they viewed as the natural discipline of instinct. They saw this as embodied in wild animals, especially large predators such as wolves, while the opposite were domesticated mongrels whose instincts, like those of overly civilized peoples, had been ruined through careless breeding. Those who anticipated this view included Nietzsche and Kipling. The author finds

Phenomenological models mathematically describe relationships among empirically observed phenomena without attempting to explain underlying mechanisms. Within the context of NLTS, phenomenological modeling goes beyond phase space reconstruction to extract equations governing real-world system dynamics from a single or multiple observed time series. Abstract:
This chapter turns to the work of Konrad Lorenz. Primarily interested in the scientific study of animal behavior, Lorenz believed that understanding how and why animals behave the way they do would shed light on the predicament of human behavior and the problem of nuclear escalation. Whereas Ardrey had lumped together hunting, cannibalism, and murderous rage into a single entity that defined humanity, Lorenz carefully distinguished the hunger associated with the killing of other species for food (an interspecific behavior) from (intraspecific) aggression inherent to killing a member of one's own species. Hunters and warriors were not the same thing—and between them, Lorenz was interested in only the latter. One of the deepest intellectual splits between Ardrey and Lorenz concerned the timing and causality of man's relationship with tools of war: whereas Ardrey insisted that the accidental discovery of weapons drove our intellectual and social development as humans (the weapon made the man), Lorenz flipped these, asserting the far more commonly held belief that early humans self-consciously developed weapons as tools for hunting.

Abstract:
Low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LoRETA) neurofeedback and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback may improve driving ability by enhancing attention, impulse control, and peripheral vision, and reducing stress. However, it is unclear whether combined LoRETA neurofeedback and HRV biofeedback can improve driving performance for individuals experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). In this study, seven individuals with PPCS completed an eight-week LoRETA neurofeedback and HRV biofeedback intervention. Changes in participants’ simulated driving performance and self-reported symptoms were measured and compared to two control groups: individuals with PPCS (n = 9), and healthy control participants (n = 8). Individuals in the intervention and PPCS control groups reported reduced PPCS severity (p < .05) compared to healthy control participants. Interestingly, individuals in the intervention group responded variably. These results indicate that more research is necessary to identify the subgroup of individuals that respond to LoRETA neurofeedback and HRV biofeedback and confirm these preliminary results.

Abstract:
During the first half of the nineteenth century, Spanish American intellectuals believed science could diagnose, treat, and excise an array of “colonial legacies” left in the wake of Spanish monarchical rule. Drawing on New Granada as a case in point, this chapter considers two revealing examples of how Spanish American contributions to emerging social sciences challenged prevailing European and North Atlantic ideas about race well before the late nineteenth century adoption and adaptation of eugenics. The first example emerges from an 1830s land-surveying catechism by noted New Granadan educator and publicist, Lorenzo María Lleras. The catechism sought to ensure equitable land surveys of indigenous communal land holding. The second example spotlights José María Samper’s mid-century invention of comparative political sociology. Spanish American intellectuals like Lleras and Samper ultimately believed that the deployment of sciences in society would produce a new “race” of democratic republicans.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes a robust control approach for the class of chaotic systems subject to magnitude and rate actuator constraints. The approach consists of decomposing the chaotic system into a linear part plus a nonlinear part to form an augmented system comprising the system itself and the integral of the output error. The resulting system is posteriorly seen as a linear system plus a bounded disturbance, and two robust controllers are applied: first, a controller based on a generalization of the Lyapunov function, then a Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with a prescribed degree of stability. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the approach applying it to the Lorenz chaotic system and to a chaotic aeroelastic system, and parameter uncertainties are also considered to prove its robustness. The results confirm the effectiveness of the approach, and the constraints are guaranteed as opposed to other control techniques which do not consider any kind of constraints.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 continues the discussion of the Genesis Jacob cycle’s intertextual relationship to The Merchant of Venice, focusing intently on Shylock’s daughter Jessica. This chapter examines how Jessica’s character is informed by two key biblical figures from that cycle of stories: Dinah and Rachel. The story of Dinah’s abduction by a non-Jewish prince contains several notable ambiguities on the question of her consent, which is sometimes figured as rape, other times as a love affair. By examining a series of different translations of Genesis 34, this chapter discusses how our understanding of Jessica’s motivations can be developed and explored through contemporary Renaissance renditions of Dinah’s story. Then, through a discussion of the biblical Rachel who, like Jessica, steals valuables belonging to her father, the chapter discusses how Renaissance writers used Rachel’s story to address women’s moral education in 16th and 17th century English conduct manuals. By examining ways in which Rachel was figured as an agent of liminality and transgression, this chapter offers new contexts for interpreting Jessica’s absconsion from her father’s Jewish household, her romance and marriage to Lorenzo, and her longed-for conversion to Christianity.

The interaction between magnetic fields and convection is an interesting phenomenon because of its many important engineering applications. Due to natural convection motion the electric conductive fluid in a magnetic field experiences a Lorenz force and its effect is usually to reduce the flow velocities. A magnetic field can be used to control the flow field and increase or reduce the heat transfer rate. In this paper, the effect of a magnetic field in a natural convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a rectangular cavity is studied numerically. The two side walls of the cavity

An experimental and numerical study is presented on melting behavior of a pure metal in the presence of a static magnetic field. When a transverse magnetic field is present and the working fluid is electrically conductive, the resulting Lorentz forces will dampen the convective flows. Buoyancy driven flow is the focus of this study. Hartmann number, a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of magnetic field, dominates the convection flow suppression. The effects of the magnetic strength on melting rate and on the profile of solid/melt interface are studied. The experiments are co

Abstract This paper proposed a new method of high-speed electrical discharge machining (EDM) using rotating short arcs under composite field. By the Lorentz force, the electric force and the high-speed rotation of the tool electrode, rotating short arcs are generated between the tool electrode and the workpiece, which can greatly improve the material removal rate of difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium alloys and superalloys. Firstly, the machining equipment used to generate rotating short arcs was constructed. Secondly, single arc discharge experiment was carried out to investigate the

The magneto hydrodynamic fluidic network’s basic building blocks are conduits equipped with two electrodes positioned on opposing walls. The entire device is either subjected to an external uniform magnetic field or fabricated within a magnetic material. When a prescribed potential difference is applied across each electrode pair, it induces current in the liquid (assumed to be a weakly conductive). The current interacts with the magnetic field to produce a Lorentz force that is perpendicular to both the directions of the current and the magnetic field. Analogously with electric circuits, by j

Phase change in a simulated low gravity environment is the central topic of this research work. The application of a transverse magnetic field gives rise to Lorentz forces that can dampen the convective flows especially the buoyancy driven flows. The flow suppression depends on a dimensionless parameter namely the Hartmann number. This paper presents the experimental results for sidewall solidification and melting and therefore, addresses the fixed solid phase conditions. Gallium is used as phase change material (PCM) and both melting and solidification processes are investigated. The effects
