AbstractAgile transformations have been a significant challenge since the beginning of the agile movement, with numerous researchers and practitioners suggesting various structured approaches and guidelines. The Kanban Maturity Model (KMM) is a relatively new approach that focuses on assessing the current maturity level of an organisation, with an emphasis on a spectrum of Kanban practices. This paper presents the initial results of applying the KMM as a guide for subsequent steps in Kanban implementation and agile transformation. The exploratory case study describes the application of the KMM in the agile transformation of a software development team within a midsize organisation. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to implement Scrum, the adoption of KMM facilitated a rapid and successful implementation of the Kanban Method. Within three months, the team’s throughput tripled, and the quality of the developed software improved significantly. The results suggest that the KMM can be successfully used as an effective guideline for agile transformation of software development teams.

AbstractCities face the challenge of addressing urban vacancies due to market volatility, rapid shifts in needs, demand, user preferences, or issues related to financing, planning, or delays in building approvals common in cities like Zürich. The study delves into a transformative shift in the Swiss real estate market, emphasizing the integration of circular economy principles, impact investments, and digitalization. The research approach is mainly descriptive, drawing upon case studies of temporary use urban projects. It incorporates a review coupled with the application of design thinking in the development of a digitalization model. In Zürich, the temporary use of vacant buildings is predominantly as office space showing a limited multi-scalar impact. In contrast, in vacant sites, Nature-based Solutions interventions demonstrated high multi-scalar impacts, enhancing biodiversity, air quality, and resident well-being, and aligning with circular economy principles. Meanwhile, various flexible uses of vacant sites indicated moderate impact, promoting innovation and new business models. A digitalization model is proposed to re-purpose these sites in circular rather than linear economy. The research underscores the importance of temporary, flexible uses on vacant site as platforms for testing new multi-scalar impact investment ideas and establishing the financial profitability of nature-based solutions in urban contexts. The study highlights the potential of temporary urban land use to promote swift urban transformations, balancing financial returns with ecological impacts for advancing circular economy.

AbstractLandslide-induced tsunamis pose a significant natural hazard with the potential for devastating impacts on coastal communities. This paper discusses the development and application of the LS-Tsunami simulation code, which utilizes landslide motion data from LS-RAPID to model these tsunamis. The program is compatible with Windows PC and features user-friendly visual interfaces and 3D graphical results, making it easy for beginners to conduct integrated landslide and tsunami simulations. The process involves setting the simulation area, editing topographic data, reading landslide results from LS-RAPID, and configuring calculation conditions. In addition to the descriptive steps provided in this paper, a video tutorial is available to guide users through the process of using the LS-Tsunami simulation code. Notably, LS-Tsunami has been successfully applied to various case studies, including a simple coastal landslide-induced tsunami, the 1972 Unzen landslide-induced tsunami in Japan, and a landslide-induced tsunami-like wave in Vietnam.

AbstractThe rapid development of histopathology scanners allowed the digital transformation of pathology. Current devices fastly and accurately digitize histology slides on many magnifications, resulting in whole slide images (WSI). However, direct application of supervised deep learning methods to WSI highest magnification is impossible due to hardware limitations. That is why WSI classification is usually analyzed using standard Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) approaches, that do not explain their predictions, which is crucial for medical applications. In this work, we fill this gap by introducing ProtoMIL, a novel self-explainable MIL method inspired by the case-based reasoning process that operates on visual prototypes. Thanks to incorporating prototypical features into objects description, ProtoMIL unprecedentedly joins the model accuracy and fine-grained interpretability, as confirmed by the experiments conducted on five recognized whole-slide image datasets.

Abstract:
AbstractWith rapid development of 3D scanning technologies and implementation of digital twinning and reverse engineering in the construction industry, it became possible for finite element simulations to facilitate analysis of measured geometries when it is needed. A new approach to generate 3D solid models using advanced techniques in the field of 3D scanning is introduced in this paper. Constructing three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models with measured geometry of structures or structural elements can be technically difficult. To date, there is no robust automated approach to translate the data obtained from 3D scans directly into a model for FE analysis. This paper provides an overview on current applications of 3D scanning, and a case study that addresses the issue of processing three-dimensional point clouds that are generated from 3D scans of steel links. Another objective of this paper is to present a simple and practical procedure to convert point clouds into solid models that can be further used in FE analysis. Five distinct 3D scanning technologies were selected for the measurement of replaceable steel links to generate solid models based on the measured geometry. For the specific application addressed in this paper, the blue laser scanner with measuring arm has shown the most satisfactory results in terms of efficiency.

Abstract:
AbstractResearch on human reinforcement learning and decision-making behaviour has traditionally used visual-based symbols and graphics in the experimental paradigms. Such research leads to improved understanding of human decision-making and has application in fundamental research in cognitive neuroscience. In clinical domains, the approach holds out the possibility for the development of computationally-derived biomarkers suitable for use in psychiatry. Scaling this experimental approach through pervasive computing can help create larger datasets which will be necessary for normative studies. This will require the expansion of these experimental approaches beyond conventional visual representations. People receive information and interact with their environments through various senses. In particular, our sense of hearing in conjunction with speech represents a ubiquitous modality for learning and for updating our knowledge of the world. Consequently, it represents an important path for the investigation of human decision-making which is now experimentally accessible via rapid advances in voice-enabled intelligent personal assistants (IPAs). Examples include Amazon’s Alexa technology and Google’s Voice Assistant. However, to date no studies have demonstrated the feasibility of delivering such experimental paradigms over such voice technologies. Consequently in this study, we compared the performance of the same group of participants on the traditional visual-based and for the first time, a conversational voice-based, two-armed bandit task. Reinforcement learning models were fitted to the data to represent the characteristics of the underlying cognitive mechanisms in the task. Both model-independent behavioural measures and model-derived parameters were compared. The results suggest that participants demonstrated higher shifting rates in the voice-based version of the task. The computational modelling analysis revealed that participants adopted similar learning rates under the two versions of the interfaces, but more decision noise was introduced in the voice-based task as reflected by the decreased value of the inverse temperature parameter. We suggest that the elevated shifting rate is derived from the increased noise in the voice interface instead of a change in the learning strategy of the participants. Higher intensity of the control adjustments (click touch versus speak) might be one of the sources of noise, thus it is important to think further regarding the design of the voice interface if we wish to apply voice-enabled IPAs to measure human decision-making in their daily environments in the future.

Abstract:
Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) development has traditionally been addressed using framework-based development approaches (i.e., using application frameworks), which usually comprise tools such as Standard Development Kits (SDKs), class libraries, and Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Nevertheless, another development approach that relies on Model-Driven Development (MDD) methodologies and tools has recently emerged as a result of the academic and commercial effort for alleviating the lack of development methodologies and support tools especially designed for the development of RIAs. In this chapter, a new classification of RIAs development approaches is proposed by introducing a third category: Rapid Application Development (RAD) approaches. Thereby, the chapter reviews not only IDEs for frameworks-based RIA development; it also addresses other support tools for MDD and RAD such as code generation tools. Additionally, the features, scope, and limitations of the analyzed tools are discussed by means of a series of usage scenarios addressing the RIAs implementation.

Abstract:
Rapid advances in high fidelity modeling and high performance computing capabilities have enabled their routine utilization in support of aircraft design. Analysts are able to generate orders of magnitude more data that must then be turned into actionable intelligence to guide design. Enabling effective application of advanced analysis to design requires a robust end-to-end digital transformation to make the simulation processes reusable, repeatable, traceable, scalable and minimize setup errors. This is achieved through the development of a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling framework

Rapid changes and specialization in technology make it increasingly difficult for designers to keep track of the current capabilities of manufacturing processes and choose the appropriate one. Improper process selection leads to higher costs, lower quality and wrong choice of the supplier. Currently, there is no software advisory system to help the design/procurement personnel in process and supplier selection. The complexity involved in building an application encompassing the capabilities of dozens of processes and its associated suppliers acts as a deterrent for application service provider

In order to advance our understanding towards potential biotechnology improvement of plant performance, we studied root responses to limited P in two different plants, Arabidopsis and tomato. Arabidopsis is among the most studied model plants that allows rapid application of molecular and developmental experiments while tomato is an important crop, with application in agriculture. Using Arabidopsis we found that steroid hormones modulate the extent of root elongation in response to limited P, by controlling the accumulation of iron in the root. We also found that the availability of P and iron
