Abstract:
This thesis describes fundamental studies of the surface interactions between rare earths and the collector hydroxamate to obtain a mechanistic understanding of the flotation process. A model and systematic investigation has been undertaken in order to ascertain the flotation mechanism and optimise flotation response and selectivity. Major constituent components (rare earth oxides, minerals and gangue minerals) in the flotation system were fully characterized individually prior to the interaction investigations. Six rare earth hydroxamate model compounds have been synthesized to characterize t

Rare earth elements (REEs) are important for establishing a technology based society, however are difficult to process. The use of biomining for the extraction of REEs minerals offers a benign alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical routes with more selective solubilisation of REEs over radionuclides. The use of phosphate solubilising microorganisms in the bioleaching of REEs was investigated to gain a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of individual REEs and the mechanism attributed to their mobilisation.

This present study was intended to determine the potential of organic acids in REEs, specifically in monazite concentrate. The proposed process in this study consisted of a pre-treatment, leaching and RE hydroxide precipitation stages. The first stage consisted of producing rare earth (RE) oxalates by leaching monazite concentrate with oxalic acid. The second stage involved the extraction of the metals from the residue. The third stage involved the conversion of RE oxalate EDTA complex in the solution to a RE hydroxide.

Abstract:
Niobium and rare earth elements (REE) are considered as strategic metals in industrialised countries, and are mainly derived from carbonatite-related deposits. Indicator mineral methods for carbonatites using of portable XRF and Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAN®), shows promise in exploration for Nb and REE. Portable XRF analysis of stream sediments from the Aley, Lonnie, and Wicheeda carbonatites identified 125-250 μm as the ideal size fraction for indicator mineral studies. QEMSCAN® provides (with no additional processing) detection and characteri

Abstract:
Deposits of iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) type are the most important copper resource in South Australia. These deposits also contain uranium and other minor non-target elements which need to be removed for the successful generation of clean concentrates. This necessitates a sound understanding of the physical location and chemical speciation of non-target elements in ore and throughout processing. This information is only achievable through detailed mineralogy and understating of changes to mineral chemistry during processing. The research composing this thesis is a contribution to a larger i

Hillside is a newly-discovered, undeveloped copper resource related to Mesoproterozoic Hiltaba Suite intrusives along the crustal-scale Pine Point fault on the eastern margin of the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. Mineralogical and petrographic study was undertaken on ~100 samples representative of all lithologies, parts of the deposit, and evolution from magmatic through prograde and retrograde skarn to late-stage hydrothermal overprint. Emphasis was placed on distributions of REE+Y and other trace elements in main minerals, and on the constraints these patterns provide for processes associ
