Rail surface defects are a serious concern for railway infrastructure managers all around the world. They lead to poor ride quality due to excess vibration and noise; in rare cases, they can result in a broken rail and a train derailment. Defects are typically classified as ‘rail studs’ when they initiate from the white etching layer, and ‘rail squats’ when they initiate from rolling contact fatigue. This paper presents a novel investigation into rail squat initiation and growth simulations using peridynamic theory. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no other comprehensive study of rail sq

The transimpedance conversion circuit is an important part of the fluorescent optical fiber temperature sensor, which is used for rare earth fluorescence detection. Transimpedance conversion circuits can benefit from the wide input range, high gain, low input offset voltage, and high common-mode rejection ratio of rail-to-rail operational amplifiers. In this paper, a constant transconductance rail-to-rail operational amplifier is designed and implemented based on the 0.18 μm CMOS process. Self-shielded flux-cored wire is a new type of welding material that has the advantages of outdoor and high-efficiency application, and it has been used widely for rail repair. A self-shielded flux-cored wire with high alkalinity and rare earth elements was taken for research, and the microstructure, inclusions, hardness and the impact toughness were studied. Rare earth elements could eliminate the oxygen and sulfur when they were added into the molten pool. The addition amount has been optimized to the range of 4% in the self-shielded flux-cored wire when used for rail repairing.

Rail discontinuities are one of the main sources of wheel impact causing high levels of noise, vibration and stresses in railway track. Even though various multi-body train–track interaction models have been developed in the past decade, accurate modeling and analysis of the track dynamic behavior in the vicinity of rail discontinuities is rare in the literature. In this paper, formulation of a new explicit multi-body dynamic (MBD) model incorporating detailed wagon, wheel–rail subsystems and track containing a rail discontinuity (rail joint) is reported. Abstract The aluminothermic welding (ATW) process is the most commonly used welding process for welding rails (track) in the field. The large amount of weld metal added in the ATW process may result in a wide uneven surface zone on the rail head, which may, in rare cases, lead to irregularities in wear and plastic deformation due to high dynamic wheel-rail forces as wheels pass. The present paper studies the introduction of additional forging to the ATW process, intended to reduce the width of the zone affected by the heat input, while not creating a more detrimental residual stress field. The inclusions’ number, size, and aspect ratio were analyzed by automatic scanning electron microscope ASPEX. The results show that the inclusions in heavy rail steel without Ce are elongated MnS and irregular Al-Si-Ca-O inclusions. With the increase of Ce from 52 ppm to 340 ppm, the composition of main inclusions changes along the route of Ce2O2S-MnS → Ce2O2S-MnS-Ce2S3 → Ce2O2S-Ce3S4-Ce2S3 → Ce2O2S-Ce3

Abstract:
India’s urbanization rate has increased from 26% in 1991 to 35% in 2021, and it is expected to reach 41% by 2030 (World Bank 2022). In response to this, as the backbone of its growing economy, the country’s infrastructure development, particularly transportation development, has been heavily emphasized. The railway sector will see an investment of $715.41 billion by 2030. Along with a series of supporting government policies, an opportunity to expand the high-speed rail (HSR) network has been presented in India. From the viewpoint of the government, HSR is an effective tool to address the surg

Abstract:
Rain impacts roadways such as wet pavement, standing water, decreased visibility, and wind gusts and can lead to hazardous driving conditions. This study investigates the use of high fidelity Doppler data at 1 km spatial and 2-minute temporal resolution in combination with commercial probe speed data on freeways. Segment-based space-mean speeds were used and drops in speeds during rainfall events of 5.5 mm/hour or greater over a one-month period on a section of four to six-lane interstate were assessed. Speed reductions were evaluated as a time series over a 1-hour window with the rain data. T

Abstract:
The objective of this one-year project was to show whether a significant correlation can be established between the decreasing infiltration rate of the soil, during simulated rainstorm, and a following increase in the reflectance of the crusting soil. The project was supposed to be conducted under laboratory conditions, using at least three types of soils from each country. The general goal of this work was to develop a method for measuring the soil infiltration rate in-situ, solely from the reflectance readings, using a spectrometer. Loss of rain and irrigation water from cultivated fields is

Abstract:
The adoption of dashboards and tools into Traffic Management Centers (TMC) has been growing with advancements in connected vehicle (CV) data. These tools are now being utilized—not only for analyzing work zones, severe crashes, winter operations, and traffic signals—but also to provide measures for characterizing overall system mobility, resiliency, and after-action assessments. Previous studies have extended the concepts to include the enhanced trajectory-based CV data into dashboards that aid agencies in assessing and managing roadways. This study presents the extension of these tools that f

ASME B31.8 states that "Dents that contain stress corrosion cracking or other cracks are injurious to the pipeline" and therefore, requires immediate attention by the Operators. Dent containing crack fields (colonies) are often observed in liquid pipelines. The recently completed PRCI research project MD-1N "Study of the Mechanism for Cracking in Dents in a Crude Oil Pipeline" showed evidence of a mechanism for fatigue cracking. The crack growth rate as a function of stress intensity factor was estimated using the measured spacings of fatigue striations from fracture surfaces based on the assu
