Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are both severe psychiatric diseases which can give rise to debilitating symptoms. Suicidal behavior represents the most severe, yet inherently preventable, outcome of psychiatric disease. Despite tremendous efforts to improve the awareness and treatment of psychiatric illness, suicidal behavior rates have been on the rise. The greatest challenge to confronting this crisis is the effective identification and treatment of those at risk for suicide. This challenge has been difficult to address due, in part, to the lack of a clear biological basis for suicidal behavior. Toward addressing this knowledge gap, evidence has been identified of a significant heritable component to su

Bibliography: leaves 132-159. Boron efficiency in oilseed rape (Brassica napua L. and B. juncea L.) was investigated in a wide range of genotypes. Using a solution culture screening of 10 day old seedlings, root length best described shoot growth response, and was used to characterise a total of 65 genotypes. Varieties and breeders lines tolerant of B-deficient growing conditions were identified, and the screening process validated through field trials. B responses in plants sampled at the 'green bud' stage indicated that vegetative growth is important in B efficiency. Studies were conducted

Abstract:
Abstract Winter energy management in small passerines living year-round in boreal or alpine areas presumably results in strong selective pressure since they need to find food, at a time when natural resources diminish and become less available, and energy requirements increase dramatically. In this thesis energy management during the non-breeding season was studied in three species of tits (Parus spp.), from three different populations: Coll de Pal (Spanish Pyrenees), Lund (Southern Sweden) and Oulu (Northern Finland). Energy management strategies vary significantly between species and among

Abstract:
Animals may adopt a range of energy strategies to persist and perhaps prosper under various prevailing environmental conditions. For example, they may achieve similar growth by investing heavily in maintaining a high capacity food capture and processing system or by using a lower capacity system that is cheap to run but which is less effective at accruing further resources. The way that individuals within species allocate energy resources is an intriguing issue that has implications for understanding competition, population structuring and the response of populations to environmental change.
