Abstract:
Investigation of stains from crime scenes are commonly used in the search for criminals. At The National Laboratory of Forensic Science, where these stains are examined, a number of questions of theoretical and practical interest regarding the databases of DNA profiles and the strength of DNA evidence against a suspect in a trial are not fully investigated. The first part of this thesis deals with how a sample of DNA profiles from a population is used in the process of estimating the strength of DNA evidence in a trial, taking population genetic factors into account. We then consider how to co

Abstract:
The late seventeenth century was the golden age of the printed descriptive catalogue. Nehemiah Grew’s 1681 catalogue, Musæum Regalis Societatis, printed for London’s Royal Society, exemplifies this elaborate published genre of early museum literature during a particular moment in time when collecting and ordering were methods of understanding the world. This thesis explores the importance of ephemeral texts in historical study by analyzing the prose used in Grew’s catalogue. Musæum Regalis Societatis opens a window onto late seventeenth-century English culture, providing insight into Grew’s op

The article analyzes the perception of Japan in the middle of the 19th century through the eyes of the Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. As secretary of Yevfimiy Putyatin’s mission (who concluded the first Russian-Japanese treaty in 1855), he kept travel notes, which later turned into a famous essay about a trip to Japan. The study is based on a rare edition of “Russians in Japan”, published in 1855, a few years before the appearance of the famous book “Frigate Pallada”. Goncharov’s notes marked the beginning of a new stage of awareness about Japan in the Russian Empire. His impressions added new
