Abstract:
With the advent of the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web, the use and demand for online maps has grown very rapidly. Large scale topographic maps from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at a scale of 1:24,000 have been traditionally distributed in paper form. To make these maps available to a larger number of people, rasterized versions are now available from various sources. Instead of the common raster format presentation, the solution presented here is based on a vector approach using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), a relatively new vector format describing vector graphics for the Web. SVG provides many advantages compared to the use of a raster-based presentation, such as the quality of the graphical representation, maintenance, actualization, interactivity, and extensibility through other Web programming languages. The purpose of this research is to propose an optimal and logical structure for a SVG document with a minimal file size that would be universally applicable to all USGS large scale topographic maps while maintaining the graphic quality at a comparable level with maps presented on paper. The study shows that SVG is a promising technology for delivering high quality, fully-vector topographic maps via the Internet, both in terms of graphic quality and interactivity.

Abstract:
Abstract. We describe a novel method implemented in the GPlates plate tectonic reconstruction software to interactively reconstruct arbitrarily high-resolution raster data to past geological times using a rotation model. The approach is based on the projection of geo-referenced raster data into a cube map followed by a reverse projection onto rotated tectonic plates on the surface of the globe. This decouples the rendering of a geo-referenced raster from its reconstruction, providing a number of benefits including a simple implementation and the ability to combine rasters with different geo-referencing or inbuilt raster projections. The cube map projection is accelerated by graphics hardware in a wide variety of computer systems manufactured over the last decade. Furthermore, by integrating a multi-resolution tile partitioning into the cube map we can provide on-demand tile streaming, level-of-detail rendering and hierarchical visibility culling, enabling researchers to visually explore essentially unlimited resolution geophysical raster data attached to tectonic plates and reconstructed through geological time. This capability forms the basis for interactively building and improving plate reconstructions in an iterative fashion, particularly for tectonically complex regions.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the description and characteristics of common problems which graphic designers face daily when working for advertising agencies. This work describes tasks and organises them according to the type of graphic being processed and the types of output. In addition, this work describes the ways these common tasks can be completed using modern graphics editing software. It also provides a practical definition of a graphic designer and graphic agency. The aim of this work is to map out the fundamental tasks with raster graphics which graphic designers must perform most frequently during their work and to suggest an optimal workflow. As a result, after collating all of the proposed solutions, a manual should take form. It should help to facilitate early stages of work for students who may hold the position of junior graphic designer within advertising agencies.

Alexander, Julie G. "Hydrographic Surface Modeling Through A Raster Based Spline Creation Method." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2014. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1842.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States Army Corp of Engineers relies on accurate and detailed surface models for various construction projects and preventative measures. To aid in these efforts, it is necessary to work for advancements in surface model creation. Current methods for model creation include Delaunay triangulation, raster grid interpolation, and Hydraulic Spline grid generation. While these methods produce adequate surface models, attempts for improved methods can still be made. A method for raster based spline creation is presented as a variation of the Hydraulic Spline algorithm. By implementing Hydraulic Splines in raster data instead of vector data, the model creation process is streamlined. This method is shown to be more efficient and less computationally expensive than previous methods of surface model creation due to the inherent advantages of raster data over vector data.

Abstract:
The work is a continuation of the authors' research on the problem of adaptive compression of raster hyperspectral images of Earth remote sensing. In the first part of the article, the authors give an overview of the current state of affairs in the processing of images of remote sensing of the Earth, the characteristic properties of raster hyperspectral images in the context of the prospects for lossy compression, the problems of the effectiveness of existing compression methods of this type of graphic documents are indicated. Further, the article highlights the issues of increasing the efficiency of methods for eliminating information redundancy of raster hyperspectral images of Earth remote sensing. The problems of designing and creating parallel methods and algorithms for the compression of raster hyperspectral ERS images are considered. A method for the development of a parallel algorithm for constructing a system of local homogeneous "well-adapted" basis functions for raster hyperspectral images, based on the Chebyshev approximation for systems using the CUDA graphics processor, is proposed.

Abstract:
In this paper various graphic formats were reviewed as resources for web virtual globe. Interactive spherical visualization (ISV) platform called “Orbus” was considered as an example of a graphic resources repository for web virtual globe. Various raster and vector static and dynamic cartographic layers can be set as resources of applications of this type. Such data should fulfill requirements for high informativeness with a minimum disk volume. In this paper traditional formats used for geodata storing, as well as becoming popular formats that can be adapted to work with geodata were explored. As a result of the analysis of the characteristics of common raster formats, the optimized raster format WebP (in the lossless specification), as well as the associated WebM media container, were selected as the most efficient. As a result of analysis of the characteristics of common vector formats, conclusions about their limitations in visual design of the virtual globe were made.

The work is devoted to the consideration of the issues of eliminating information redundancy of raster data of remote sensing of the Earth (RDRSE), including the latest hyperspectral data (HSD). The characteristic properties of raster hyperspectral images (RHSI) are listed, a brief description of the existing methods of RDRSE compression is given. The possibility of using local, homogeneous "well-adapted" basic functions (LHWABF) to eliminate information redundancy and adaptive compression of RDRSE is considered. An algorithm for constructing a LHWABF system for the RHSI based on the Chebyshev approximation is proposed. The results of computational experiments are given. The effectiveness of the proposed method of adaptive compression RHSI is shown.
