Abstract:
There are two principal oestrogen receptors (ER) characterised to date, ER-a and ER-b, the products of two distinct genes. Using quantitative in situ hybridisation histochemistry we first described the distribution of neurones expressing the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) moieties for both types of ER in rat brain. We then investigated whether changes in the expression of these mRNA transcripts occur in response to hormonal manipulations as well as physiological stimulation in two discrete regions: the hippocampus, involved in memory, behaviour and regulation of the hypothalamo-pitui

An anti-G"11 antibody was used to label neuronal cilia throughout the rat central nervous system. Immunoreactive cilia were observed in every examined region of the rat CNS, but not in monkey or mouse tissue. Antibodies to G"q and G"q/11 failed to label cilia. Immunoreactive cilia were observed as early as postnatal day 0 in spinal tissue, and postnatal day 3 in hypothalamic tissue. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between a region's mean cilium length and that region's distance to the nearest ventricle; regions nearest ventricles were those with the longest cilia. Abstract:
Endocannabinoids (ECs) are proposed to be extracellular retrograde messengers that regulate the excitability of neurons in the brain by CBi receptor-dependent inhibition of neurotransmitter release. They play physiologically essential roles in diverse biological systems and are widely believed to be synthesized in cell membranes, on demand, via calcium-sensitive phospholipases. Endocannabinoid (EC) levels are governed by the balance between synthesis, metabolism and trans- membrane transport. Thus, it is important to understand the factors regulating intracellular and extracellular EC concentr

Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), exerts an effect on receptors termed 'P2 receptors', which can be divided into ionotropic 'P2X' receptors and metabotropic 'P2Y' receptors. ATP is released from peripheral and central nerve terminals and is well established as a fast excitatory transmitter, acting through P2X receptors. However, relatively little evidence has emerged to demonstrate the presence of P2Y receptors in the central nervous system (CNS), although pre- and post-synaptic expression have been shown in the periphery. The aim of this study was therefore to study some consequences of P2Y re

Abstract:
Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a chemical mediator of nociception that can evoke characteristic pain behaviour in animals after peripheral and spinal administration. The prostanoid is synthesised during tissue injury through activation of the arachidonic acid cascade, and its effects are mediated through binding to a family of specific G-protein coupled prostaglandin E (EP) receptors. The aim of the present study was to elucidate which EP receptors have an involvement in mediating the pronociceptive effects of PGE2 within the rat peripheral and central nervous system. Abstract:
Cholinergic interneurons are relatively rare neurons in the rat striatum. These sparsely distributed neurons display a synchronous pause in their tonic firing pattern during reward-related learning. It has been hypothesised that a specialised fast-conducting crossed-corticostriatal pathway is involved in synchronising the pause in tonic firing of these interneurons. This study aimed to detail the innervation of cholinergic interneurons by mapping their proximal and distal inputs and to describe the innervation of the crossed-corticostriatal pathway in male Wistar rats.
