Kandula, Rajendra Prasad. "Power router based on a fractionally-rated back-to-back (FR-BTB) converter." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52289.

Full text
Abstract:
A low-cost power router (PR), capable of dynamic, independent control of active- and reactive-power flows on meshed grids is presented. The operating principle, detailed schematics, and various possible implementations of the proposed power router are discussed. Various operating modes are identified and a control algorithm has been proposed and verified through simulations. Small-signal and frequency-domain models of the power router from basic time-domain equations are developed. A three-tier protection system based on the fail-normal switch to avoid single point-of-failure is presented. The

In recent years there has been an increase in wind power plants installed out at sea. The generated power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) are collected through numerous subsea cables into a single hub, the offshore platform. Subsequently, this platform is interconnected with the onshore main grid through a further stretch of cable. In the event of a fault, a sudden increase in current, so called short-circuit current, will occur somewhere in the system. The short-circuit current will, depending on the duration and location of the fault, potentially harm the power system. In order to accurate

In modern digital audio applications, a continuous audio signal stream is sampled at a fixed sampling rate, which is always greater than twice the highest frequency of the input signal, to prevent aliasing. A more energy efficient approach is to dynamically change the sampling rate based on the input signal. In the dynamic sampling rate technique, fewer samples are processed when there is little frequency content in the samples. The perceived quality of the signal is unchanged in this technique. Processing fewer samples involves less computation work; therefore processor speed and voltage can

This thesis provides evidence in favour of the long-run validity of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) using primarily a linear error correction framework. Through an examination of PPP where proportionality and symmetry are implicitly imposed, it is shown that a selection of twelve EU real exchange rates is stationary on a univariate basis. The contribution here is based on the reconciliation of unit root test outcomes across univariate and panel tests. Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, February 2008.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 65-66).
Multicarrier systems are advantageous for high data rate transmissions in wireless environments due to their ease of implementation and tolerance for multipath delay spread. Currently, these systems as specified by the IEEE 802.11 standards do not adapt to frequency-selective fading but simply choose a constant data modulation scheme and transmit power level for all sub carriers in the available signal bandwidth.

Abstract:
Energy mix modellers often use a constant emissions factor model, which more or less implies a constant heat rate, when trying to show the emissions reduction benefits of integrating renewable power generation system on the grid. This approach does not consider the fact that there is a deterioration in the heat rate with load for the Coal Fired Power Plants that need to accommodate the additional renewable supply. If varying heat rate were to be included in a study, it is often limited to plant specific cases. This PhD presents a novel Variable Turbine Cycle Heat Rate (V-TCHR) model for predic
