Sequential methods aim to update beliefs about a set of parameters given new blocks of data that arise in sequence. Early research in this area was motivated by the case where the blocks of data arise in time and as a result of observing an underlying dynamical system, but an important modern application is in the analysis of large datasets. This thesis considers both the design and application of sequential methods. A new adaptive sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methodology is presented. Hofmann, Annika Luisa. "Case study: DBRS sovereign rating of Portugal - analysis of rating methodology and rating decisions." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/26843.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes and assesses the DBRS sovereign credit rating methodology and its rating decisions on Portugal. A replicated rating model on Portugal allows to assess the DBRS rating methodology and to identify country-specific risk factors. An OLS regression compares rating effects of ten fundamental variables among S&P, Moody’s, Fitch Ratings and DBRS. Further, a rating scale model fractionally disentangles DBRS rating grades into their subjective and objective rating components. Both qualitative and empirical findings attest DBRS a comparably lenient rating behavior on Portugal –in comp

Abstract:

The design of bridges prior to 1994 was carried out by either the Load Factor Design (LFD) or the Allowable Stress Design (ASD) methodologies. Load rating of these bridges was primarily conducted by Load Factor Rating (LFR). In 1994, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) developed and encouraged the use of a probabilistic-based method titled Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for carrying out bridge design. A new methodology consistent with LRFD was also developed and adopted for conducting load rating. Thus, a new Load and Resistance Factor

This write-up is submitted in partial fulfillment of the Master of Management Degree in Finance and Investment
Through the use of an EGARCH model and a fixed effects panel regression, the reaction of emerging market stock and bond volatility to sovereign credit ratings changes is examined. The daily data covers the period of 1990 to 2016 and emerging market crises, such as the 1994 Mexican peso crisis, 1997 Asian financial crises and the global 2008 financial crises. The estimations provide evidence of an asymmetric effect of rating changes on stock volatilities, whereby downgrades have a s
