Du, Toit Elda. "Using financial analysis and interpretation as a foundation to comprehend financial health." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24645.

Abstract:
The ability to measure the financial health of a company is becoming an increasingly serious issue. One only needs to think of the widely published irregularities in companies such as Enron, Parmalat and Macmed to grasp something of the magnitude of the losses and other problems that investors can face if they do not have the ability to “predict” possible problems. There are individuals who are constantly identifying new and ingenious ways to deceive their customers, investors, the government and others. It is important for parties with an interest in a company to devise new ways to identify how financial analyses can be used to protect their interests. Managers are primarily responsible for the prevention and identification of accounting irregularities. Unfortunately, at the same time, they may also be assumed to be the primary perpetrators of accounting irregularities, because they are in a position to manipulate accounting records and bypass control measures more easily than anyone else in a company. The main aim of this study is to determine whether financial analysis and interpretation can be applied by interested parties to measure financial health and by implication identify accounting irregularities. Proof that this is possible has the potential to be used in analyses, by all parties with an interest in a company, to determine financial health and to identify irregularities in the financial statements. The study begins with a literature review, which provides an explanation of accounting irregularities and related matters, as well as an overview of previous uses of financial analyses to determine whether such analyses are useful in the identification of irregularities in the financial statements.   The objectives of the study are as follows:
  • An investigation into the characteristics, as identified by researchers locally and abroad, that are displayed by companies with a higher risk of or occurrence of accounting irregularities.
  • A survey of the media by means of a literature review to identify case study companies that had allegations of accounting irregularities against them.
  • The analysis of the case study companies in a quantitative and qualitative way to determine whether the characteristics that are identified as part of the first objective hold true in practice.
  • Statistical analyses of the share price data of the case study companies in the form of an event study, a regression analysis and a structural break analysis to determine when and under what circumstances significant changes happened.
  • Conduct a survey involving the creators and the users of financial statements in order to observe their experience regarding the usefulness of financial statements to reveal financial health. This is done by means of questionnaires that are analysed statistically, designed to derive conclusions of what practitioners tend to experience in practice and what their feelings are regarding the use of financial statements and accounting data in an analysis of the financial health of a company.
On the basis of the case studies, nine of 18 identified characteristics were found to be useful in the identification of accounting irregularities by parties other than managers. They are: 1. company age; 2. company culture; 3. debt levels; 4. directors’ behaviour and character; 5. financial distress; 6. industry or sector; 7. liquidity; 8. management’s behaviour and character; and 9. remuneration policies. A further eight additional characteristics were also identified as useful in the identification of accounting irregularities. They are: 1. acquisitions, mergers and other restructuring; 2. dividends; 3. opposite movements from the industry or sector; 4. period before irregularities are detected; 5. “preparing” interested parties for the annual report; 6. share price changes; 7. significant changes; and 8. tax. The results of the review of the companies’ financial information are supplemented with a statistical analysis of the companies’ share price data as well as a questionnaire that are submitted to the users and compilers of financial statements. The aim of the first statistical analysis, consisting of event studies, regression analyses and structural break analyses, is to support the findings regarding the characteristics of companies with increased risk of accounting irregularities. The questionnaire set out to relate the subjective opinions of the users and compilers of financial statements with the findings of the study. The results of the study provide proof that interested parties have the ability to use the identified company characteristics to indicate increased accounting irregularity risk.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an implementation of supervised learning performed with a stochastic neural net, as applied to a classification of business firms based on financial statements and ratios. The general Boltzmann Machine Algorithm is presented in detail, as well as the specific version designed for this application. We describe in detail several classifications that we attempted to reproduce, and some of the different possible ways of encoding the data issued from the income statements and the balance sheet. The results are shown to depend on the chosen encoding. We also confirm that the neural net behaves better when it is trained on the most difficult cases.

The DuPont analysis is one of the most commonly used financial analysis tools for traditional businesses. It disaggregates return on equity (ROE) into profit margin (PM), asset turnover (ATO), and leverage (LEV) thereby providing value-relevant information relative to aggregated profitability. In this paper, I extend the use of the DuPont model to the professional service industry. The professional service industry has recently become one of the fastest growing segments driving the U.S. economy (USITC 2009, U.S. Census Bureau of Economic Analysis 2009). Unlike traditional businesses whose key business assets are their physical assets, professional service firms rely on human capital assets that are not recognized in the balance sheet. I introduce a profitability ratio analysis model that focuses on human capital. I validate the model by examining whether the disaggregated profitability ratios for professional service firms add relevant information over aggregated ratio in the same way as they do for traditional businesses. I use law firms as a representative segment of the professional service sector to empirically evaluate my model. I collect financial and human resource data for 81 of the 100 largest U.S. law firms from 2000 to 2007 then disaggregate profit per equity partner (PPP) into the three profitability ratios: profit margin (PM), revenue per lawyer (RPL), and leverage (LEV). I compare the absolute forecasting error (AFE) of the simple AR (1) model that uses only the current year profit per equity partner (PPP) to forecast one-year ahead profit per equity partner (PPP) and my model that uses the three profitability ratio model (PM, RPL, and LEV) of current year to forecast one-year ahead profit per equity partner (PPP). I find that using the disaggregated profitability ratios significantly improves forecasting of future profitability relative to using only profit per equity partner (PPP), analogous to similar results documented for the DuPont model in Fairfield and Yohn (2001) and Soliman (2004). I examine which firm characteristics are associated with the profitability ratios. I include four firm characteristics variables (STRUCTURE, SCOPE-INTL, SCOPE-RGNL, and SCALE) that are commonly used in economic analysis of industrial organizations. I find that the profitability ratios are systematically associated with firm characteristics that reveal information on the business models of individual firms. Leverage (LEV) is higher in law firms with non-equity partners (STRUCTURE), international focus (SCOPE-INTL), regional focus (SCOPE-RGNL), or large size (SCALE). Law firms that are large sized (SCALE) or regional focused (SCOPE-RGNL) command premium fee (high RPL) on average, but law firms with international focus or with non-equity partners do not.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The use of integrated approach to evaluate the quality of reservoir rocks is increasingly becoming vital in petroleum geoscience. This approach was employed to unravel the reason for the erratic reservoir quality of sandstones of the F-O gas field with the aim of predicting reservoir quality, evaluate the samples for presence, distribution and character of hydrocarbon inclusions so as to gain a better understanding of the fluid history. Information on the chemical conditions of diagenetic processes is commonly preserved in aqueous and oil fluid inclusion occurring in petroleum reservoir cements. Diagenesis plays a vital role in preserving, creating, or destroying porosity and permeability, while the awareness of the type of trap(s) prior to drilling serves as input for appropriate drilling designs. Thus an in-depth understanding of diagenetic histories and trap mechanisms of potential reservoirs are of paramount interest during exploration stage. This research work focused on the F-O tract located in the eastern part of Block 9 on the north-eastern flank of the Bredasdorp Basin, a sub-basin of Outeniqua Basin on the southern continental shelf, offshore South Africa. The Bredasdorp Basin experienced an onset of rifting during the Middle-Late Jurassic as a result of dextral trans-tensional stress produced by the breakup of Gondwanaland that occurred in the east of the Falkland Plateau and the Mozambique Ridge. This phenomenon initiated a normal faulting, north of the Agulhas-Falkland fracture zone followed by a widespread uplift of major bounding arches within the horst blocks in the region that enhanced an erosion of lower Valanginian drift to onset second order unconformity. This study considered 52 selected reservoir core samples from six wells(F-O1, F-O2, F-O3, F-O4, F-R1 and F-S1) in the F-O field of Bredasdorp Basin with attention on the Valanginian age sandstone. An integrated approach incorporating detailed core descriptions, wireline log analysis (using Interactive petrophysics), structural interpretation from 2D seismic lines (using SMT software) cutting across all the six wells, multi-mineral (thin section, SEM,XRD) analyses, geochemical (immobile fluid and XRF) and fluid inclusion(fluid inclusion petrography and bulk volatile) analyses were deployed for the execution of this study. Core description revealed six facies from the six wells grading from pure shale (Facies 1), through progressively coarsening interbedded sand-shale “heterolithic facies (Facies 2 - 4), to cross bedded and minor massive sandstone (Facies 5 - 6). Sedimentary structures and mineral patches varies from well to well with bioturbation, synaeresis crack, echinoid fragments, fossil burrow, foreset mudrapes, glauconite and siderite as the main observed features. All these indicate that the Valanginian reservoir section in the studied wells was deposited in the upper shallow marine settings. A combination of wireline logs were used to delineate the reservoir zone prior to core description. The principal reservoirs are tight, highly faulted Valanginian shallow-marine sandstones beneath the drift-onset unconformity, 1At1 and were deposited as an extensive sandstone “sheet” within a tidal setting. The top and base of the reservoir are defined by the 13At1 and 1At1 seismic events, respectively. This heterogeneous reservoir sandstones present low-fair porosity of between 2 to 18 % and a low-fair permeability value greater than 0.1 to 10 mD. The evolution of the F-O field was found to be controlled by extensional events owing to series of interpreted listric normal faults and rifting or graben generated possibly by the opening of the Atlantic. The field is on a well-defined structural high at the level of the regional drift-onset unconformity, 1At1.Multi-mineral analysis reveals the presence of quartz and kaolinite as the major porosity and permeability constraint respectively along with micaceous phases. The distribution of quartz and feldspar overgrowth and crystals vary from formation to formation and from bed to bed within the same structure. The increase in temperature that led to kaolinite formation could have triggered the low-porosity observed. Three types of kaolinite were recognized in the sandstone, (1) kaolinite growing in between expanded mica flakes; (2)vermiform kaolinite; and (3) euhedral kaolinite crystals forming matrix.Compositional study of the upper shallow marine sandstones in the Valanginian age indicates that the sandstones are geochemically classified as majorly litharenite having few F-O2 samples as subarkose with all F-O1 samples classified as sub-litharenite sandstone. Most of the studied wells are more of wet gas, characterized by strong response of C2 – C5 with F-O1 well showing more of gas condensate with oil shows (C7 – C11) based on the number of carbon atom present. In some cases, sulphur species (characterized by the presence of H2S, S2, CS2 and SO2) of probably thermal origin were identified while some log signatures revealed aromatic enriched sandstones possibly detecting nearby gas charges. The studied wells in the F-O field, based on fluid inclusion bulk volatile analysis are classified as gas discoveries except for F-O1 with gas condensate and oil shows. The integration of multi-mineral results and fluid inclusion studies show a dead oil stain with no visible liquid petroleum inclusion in the samples indicating the presence of quartz, kaolinite and stylolite as a major poro-perm constraint.

Abstract:

Although the likelihood ratio forms the theoretical basis for maximum likelihood (ML) detection in coherent digital communication systems, it has not been applied directly to the problem of designing good trellis-coded modulation (TOM) schemes. The remarkably simple optimal receiver of minimum shift keying (MSK) has been shown to result from the mathematical simplification of its likelihood ratio into a single term. The log-likelihood ratio then becomes a linear sum of metrics which can be implemented as a so-called simplified receiver, comprising only a few adders and delay elements. This thesis project investigated the possible existence of coded modulation schemes with similarly simplifying likelihood ratios, which would have almost trivially simple receivers compared to the Viterbi decoders which are typically required for maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE). A useful notation, called the likelihood transform, was presented to aid the analysis of likelihood ratios. The work concentrated initially on computer-aided searches, first for trellis codes which may give rise to simplifying likelihood ratios for continuous phase modulation (CPM), and then for mathematical identities which may aid in the simplification of generic likelihood ratios for equal-energy modulation. The first search yielded no simplified receivers, and all the identities produced by the second search had structures similar to the likelihood ratio of MSK. These observations prompted a formal proof of the non-existence of simplified receivers which use information from more than two symbols in their observation period. This result strictly bounds the error performance that is possible with a simplified receiver. It was also proved that simplified receivers are only optimal for modulation schemes which use no more than two pairs of antipodal signals, and that only binary modulation schemes can have simplified receivers which use information from all the symbols in their observation period.

Du, Toit Gerhard. "The significance of postmodern theories of interpretation for contractual interpretation : a critical analysis." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1245.

Abstract:
Thesis (LLD (Mercantile Law))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
The objective of this study is to examine the significance of postmodern insights regarding interpretation (especially the rejection of intentionalism) and subjectivity for contractual interpretation theory. In Part One (consisting of chapters 2-5), the leading postmodern insights on interpretation, individual autonomy, texts and intentionalism are discussed. This is done by analysing the present interpretive practice in four chapters: 1) Different theories of interpretation ranging from objectivism and natural law theories to post-structuralism are discussed in chapter 2. 2) In chapter 3 individual autonomy (as advocated by liberal theorists) is contrasted with communitarianism in order to problematize the notion of contracting parties as autonomous, self-regulating beings. By highlighting criticism against liberalism and communitarianism, and also by suggesting critical self-rule as an alternative, the assertion that contracting parties are autonomous and self-regulating is contested. 3) The process of textual definition is critically analysed with emphasis on the position reflected by the application of the parol-evidence rule and also post-structuralist ideas on the definition of texts in chapter 4. It is shown that textual definition consists of interpretation rather than identification. 4) The nature of intention and the process of intention “discovery” are analysed in chapter 5. Because of the centrality of intention in contractual practice, alternative theories on intention (and its role during interpretation) are postulated and it is suggested that post-structuralism can provide a critically reflective theory of intention. It is clear (from the critical analysis of intentionalism) that the way intention is presently approached is theoretically flawed. It is also apparent from the critique of liberal beliefs held regarding the nature of interpretation, subjectivity and the definition of texts that the theoretical foundations of these beliefs are fundamentally flawed. A critical re-imagination of contractual interpretation is necessary. In Part Two, questions about the justifiability of the present interpretive theories are posed. In chapter 6 the practical implications of a new theoretical basis for contractual interpretation are considered by examining the way various rules of interpretation are influenced by the new theoretical basis of interpretation. Three “rules” are examined: 1) The golden rule of interpretation is examined because of its reliance on intentionalist assumptions; 2) the parol-evidence rule is examined because of its relation to positivist assumptions about the definition of texts; 3) the relevance of bona fides as a substantial remedy during the interpretation of the contract is analysed to reveal assumptions about the nature of legal subjectivity in which the present consideration of the bona fides is grounded. It is shown that rules depend not on their content for operation, but rather on the assumptions upon which they are grounded. In short, we do not have to do away with our rules of contractual interpretation, but we have to re-evaluate how we apply those rules. The final part of this dissertation consists of a summary of the conclusions drawn during the course of this study.

An examination of the heat partition ratio between the friction surfaces of a disc braking system is presented using finite element analysis (FEA). This includes a 2D static analysis of two semi-infinite bodies in contact with and without an interface layer which represents the interface tribo-layer (ITL). An analytical approach with a finite difference solution was used for cross-comparison with the static FE models. Results from the static model have provided the boundary conditions for a 2D dynamic model, where one rectangular block slides on another (fixed) rectangular block. The effects of normal loads and real contact area have also been studied.

Woollons, R. C. "Analysis and interpretation of forest fertilizer experiments." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Forestry, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7501.

Full text
Abstract:
Sir Ronald Fisher's contributions to the design and analysis of field experiments have had a profound influence on the quality of forest fertilizer trials. Nevertheless, forestry experiments have unique features which are not always amenable to adoption of the routine analytical methods that are discussed and illustrated in many statistical texts. The aim of this thesis is to explore the nature and statistical standards appropriate for the analysis of forest fertilizer trials. The general linear model (GLM), embracing the techniques of analysis of variance, covariance, and regression analysis, represents a powerful tool with which to analyse forest nutrition experiments. An examination of pertinent literature reveals, however, that substantial numbers of forestry researchers have difficulty in applying GLM methodology to forest trial data. Indeed, there is clear evidence that some scientists are unaware of the utility of covariance as a means of removing the confounding effect of differences in initial plot growing stock; other researchers fail to extract all the data inherent in forest trial data, while a few advocate abandoning GLM methodology altogether, claiming it to be an insensitive tool for analysing forest fertilizer experiments. Re-analysis here shows how inappropriate some of these published results and claims are. A system of analysis is presented which is considered a reliable and sensitive procedure for examining later-age forest fertilizer trials. For non-factorial layouts, the method employs applications of regression analysis, allowing responses in each treatment to be represented by a unique intercept and regression slope. Tests of hypotheses are introduced to determine the need for disparate slopes and independent intercepts; alike parameters are pooled to achieve a minimum available residual error. Secondary covariates such as stand competition or plot fertility values are added to models whenever pertinent, to decrease experimental errors further, and to aid interpretation of trial results. Factorial experiments are analysed very similarly, but utilizing factorial linear models and (multiple) covariance. Appropriate manipulation of response variables and covariates is integral to the recommended system. The use of yield or growth as a response variable is demonstrated to give essentially equivalent results. Adoption of average yield per tree often achieves a more decisive analysis than with per hectare variables. Use of weighted least-squares can aid the interpretation of trial results when some plots have been partially damaged. The presented system is tested by examining data from eight later age (some long term) fertilizer trials established by N.Z.Forest Products Limited. Analysis and derived results completely vindicate the value of the proposed methodology; in particular, use of two covariates increases precision in some analyses by up to 76%. The analyses irrefutably confirm the potential of nitrogen fertilizer to boost yields in thinned Pinus radiata stands belonging to the Company. These responses are demonstrated to be associated frequently with significant, but small and transient changes in stand form-factor. Examination of the basal-area responses in each of the eight experiments highlights the fact that point estimation of fertilizer gain is inadequate for management planning and forecasting; yield tables of nutrient response are required, expressed as quantity of wood that can be realised in the future. The desired form can sometimes be achieved by modelling trial data to obtain a growth and yield model, then applying suitable realisation factors. Such a simulator has therefore been derived for the N.Z.Forest Products data, recognising variable inputs of fertilization, initial basal-area, initial stocking, and stand competition; experimental fertilizer response is estimated to be about 110 m³/ha by age 30 years. The suggested methodology has several implications for fertilizer trial experimental design as well as analysis; thus, it is now recommended that trials should be installed deliberately with a range of initial plot growing stock and to contain treatments which are distinctly different in their composition. Also, because multiple covariance is demonstrated to be a powerful technique to obtain good precision and additional information in later-age forest fertilizer trials, care must be taken to collect prior initial information about the trial material.

Iglesias, Angel Moises. "Investigating Various Modal Analysis Extraction Techniques to Estimate Damping Ratio." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35890.

Full text
Abstract:
Many researchers have devoted their work to the development of modal analysis extraction techniques in order to obtain more reliable identification of the modal parameters. Also, as a consequence of all this work, there are some other works devoted to the evaluation and comparison of these methods in order to find which one is the most reliable method with respect to certain characteristics. In this thesis the Rational Fraction Polynomial (RFP) Method, the Prony or Complex Exponential Method (CEM), the Ibrahim Time Domain (ITD) Method, and Hilbert Envelope Method are used to evaluate how the accuracy of the damping ratio is affected with respect to various parameters and conditions. The investigation focuses in the estimation of damping ratio because among the modal parameters, it is the most difficult to model. Each method is evaluated individually in order to understand how the damping ratio estimation is affected with respect to each method when the characteristics of the FRF are changed. Also, they are compared to show that, in general, the Rational Fraction Polynomial Method is a more reliable method than the other methods. To investigate this, a simulated analytical data and an experimental data are processed to estimate the modal parameters, but focusing in the damping ratio. For the simulated analytical data the damping ratio's percent of error were calculated. The highest damping ratio's percent of error of the RFP was 0.0073501%. In the other hand, for the CEM, ITD, and Hilbert Envelope Method their highest damping ratio's percent of error were 83.02%, 99.82%, and 4.077%, respectively.

The study examines the benefits that can be derived by Military Treatment Facilities from capturing consumable supply costs by Diagnostic Related Groups. Civilian hospitals are capturing supply costs at the patient level using physician and Diagnostic Related Grouped specific cost accounting methods. Cost data captured in this manner can be combined with severity of illness adjusted clinical performance data available through the facility's utilization management program, thus providing data required to execute a physician practice pattern program. Direct financial benefits can be derived from a physician practice pattern program. Indirect benefits to product line decisions and materials management can be derived from this type of program as well. Military Treatment Facilities can derive the same benefits as civilian hospitals by adopting a physician and Diagnostic Related Grouped specific cost accounting system. When this type of accounting system is combined with existing utilization management programs an effective physician practice pattern program can be executed and the benefits of this type of program may be realized.

Abstract:
This study explores the financial performance measurement of South Africa's Top Companies. It aims to find a conclusion on the research problem, that is 'Do South Africa's Top Companies use the available arsenal to measure their financial performance?' Commerce and industry are the cornerstones of the economy of a country. This study purports to contribute to the ways and means of minimising the risk of business failures due to the resultant effects on the economy. The sample comprises of sixty companies. The sampling frame is the first hundred companies of the Financial Mail 200 Top Performers for 2004. The arsenal that is available to measure financial performance is researched in the financial literature. Mainly, this covers ratio analysis and interpretation, and the bankruptcy prediction models. To arrive at a conclusion on the research problem, a research instrument is developed from the host of financial ratios in the literature, including the bankruptcy prediction models. The research instrument comprises of popular ratios that are also found to be 'logical', as well as the ratios that make up the Z-Score bankruptcy prediction model. The instrument is called the Ratio Map and Z-Score and is applied to test the financial strengths/weaknesses of the Top Companies. In addition to the Ratio Map and Z-Score, the measures applied by the Top Companies as 'highlights' are analysed. This is done to determine the extent at which the measures unearth the strengths/weaknesses of the Top Companies. The conclusion drawn is that the Top Companies do not utilise the available arsenal to measure their financial performance. The supporting evidence is that the most frequently applied 'highlights' measures by the Top Companies cover only one area of the many financial fields of a company, that is, share performance. On the other hand, the analyses per Ratio Map and Z-Score have not revealed major material weaknesses in the financial position of the Top Companies. It is proposed that: ïf  More information be given in the notes to the financial statements to facilitate meaningful analysis; and ïf  A follow-up research study be done to assess the trends of the Top Companies.

With Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s compassionate conviction, Buddhist Tzu Chi Stem Cells Center (BTCSCC) was established to give hope to the patients suffering from blood disease. There are approximately 150 search requests from patients every month. It is prioritize aspect of BTCSCC to develop the highest efficiency of the matching database. In the database of BTCSCC, it contains both low and high resolution HLA typing. When the donor search result listed with only intermediate or low resolution HLA typing, it requires more time for the transplant center to search suitable donors. In such circumstance, it not only causes financial strain on patient’s family, but also lengthens the recipient’s waiting time. The study is expected to provide the possibility results of HLA matching to transplant centers by analyzing the HLA typing from blood-drive and CT reports, hoping it may be helpful to reduce searching time and money costs. As we analyzing the current use of database, we have learned that transplant centers prefer to request donors with high resolution HLA typing which also means this kind of potential donors have much higher rate to be used. Therefore, the study is expected to promote the using rate of other potential donors. The study has collected a total 347 completed transplant cases for analysis. Not only using Naïve Bayesian Classification (NBC) and transmitting laplace correction for prediction, but also adding professional effectiveness to change the NBC method. It has shown that the prediction using professional effectiveness method has the best result with 81%. The prediction has 76% by using only NBC method. And the predicting result of NBC with transmitting Laplace correction method has the worst score of 72%. The reason that it does not have the best result of NBC and Laplace correction predicting method is because when the HLA typing does not show on the training data, the prediction will be inaccurate in the entire study. As for the not-predicted cases, some of the transplant centers chose other donors for not-HLA typing reasons, some of the cases may be able to find more suitable donors through the predicting method, and others were unable to find matched donors. Therefore, these cases would not be included in the study due to the invaluable predicting results.

Abstract In the late 19th century, many new trends emerged from musical field, including Impressionism and Expressionism. In spite of that, the Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, still succeeded to the compositional manner of the Romantic period and enhanced it. He was not only a brilliant pianist, but also a fantastic conductor. His recordings are still wide-spreaded. This thesis takes Rachmaninoff’s 《Moment Musicaux》as the topic with the goal of understanding his music style and compositional technique. The first part of this paper is the study of Rachmaninoff’s life and piano works. The second part is the analysis of《Moment Musicaux》to its content. The last part is the performance interpretation. It is hoped that by way of having an in-depth understanding of 《Moment Musicaux》, better interpretations of these pieces are presented while performing them. Abstract:
Unstructured text contains a wealth of knowledge, however, it is in a form unsuitable for reasoning. Semantic interpretation is the task of processing natural language text to create or extend a coherent, formal knowledgebase able to reason and support question answering. This task involves entity, event and relation extraction, co-reference resolution, and inference. Many domains, from intelligence data to bioinformatics, would benefit by semantic interpretation. But traditional approaches to the subtasks typically require a large annotated corpus specific to a single domain and ontology. This dissertation describes an approach to rapidly train a semantic interpreter using a set of seed annotations and a large, unlabeled corpus. Our approach adapts methods from paraphrase acquisition and automatic thesaurus construction to extend seed syntactic to semantic mappings using an automatically gathered, domain specific, parallel corpus. During interpretation, the system uses joint probabilistic inference to select the most probable interpretation consistent with the background knowledge. We evaluate both the quality of the extended mappings as well as the performance of the semantic interpreter.

Joseph-Maurice Ravel plays an important role in the impressionistic music style. His music has a sense of freedom in rhythm and a rich harmony, breaking the form of the traditional rules, thus added a new flavor for the French music. Tzigane uses the form of the“Csardas”- a Hungarian folk dance. The first half is the free, lyrical section, the second half is the energetic, rhythmic section. This piece fully reflects the bold and unconstrained character of the gypsy style. Due to its inspiration from Niccolo Paganini’s 24 Caprices, op.1, Tzigane contains a variety of virtuosic techniques, such as: harmonics, double-stops, and left hand pizzicato. It was premiered in London in 1924, by violinist Jelly d’Arányi and pianist Henri Gil-marchex. This thesis is divided into four chapters: the first chapter describes the research motives, purpose, research scope, and methods of the research; the second chapter narrates the life story of Ravel and the compositional background of Tzigane; the third chapter is the analysis and musical interpretation of Tzigane; the last chapter is the conclusion of this thesis.

A double and triple chambers low-compression ratio peristaltic micropump is presented in this thesis. The compression ratio is almost 0.00706. We calculate the net flow rate of micropump with different peristaltic motion and different back pressures. Furthermore, the flow of micropump is also analyzed by using lump system. The unsteady model is capable of predicting the pressure and flow rate of micropump inside. By the simulation result, the peristaltic motion of reverse three-phase achieved a maximum flow rate. Besides, the micropump can sustain maximum backpressure when increase the chambers of micropump.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is often considered both a traditionalist and an innovator. In facing a brand new musical period, his conservative, strict attitudes, preference and vision to folk songs, created a whole new path for him. He was a prolific composer, with works such as orchestral, chamber music and vocal works. Due to the demands of lieder as the number professional singers increased, Brahms composed several vocal quartet works. At the same time, under the influence of his era, Brahms composed two waltzes of four solo voices and piano for four hands. He finished Liebeslieder in 1869, which included 18 songs. Liebeslieder earned him great acclaim. Therefore, he continued to compose Neue Liebeslieder, which was published in 1875. There are 15 songs in Neue Liebeslieder. The lyrics of the first to fourteenth songs were chosen from Georg Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora, which were poems translated from various countries. The lyrics of the final song, which was the conclusion of Liebeslieder and Neue Liebeslieder, were chosen from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Zum Schluß” of Alexis und Dora. The current thesis focuses on lyrics of the songs, the differences between the voices, form, melody, tonality, harmony, rhythm, texture, dynamics, and provides suggestions for music analysis and interpretation. The thesis consists of five parts: an introduction, a breif review of Brahms’s life and works, the analysis of the 15 songs, the interpretation of the work, and a conclusion. There are also 3 appendices attached, appendix 1 includes the form of musical elements of 15 songs. Appendix 2 offers the translation of the lyrics of the 15 songs. Appendix 3 is the program of the lecture recital.

The method in the propane analysis of intramolecular stable carbon isotope ratio has been developmented. Using propane tracer, synthesized from commercial isopropane, reacts with sMMO (souble methane monooxygenase) and pMMO (particule methane monooxygenase) to generate isopropano. Than, degrade isopropanol by chemical cleavage that no carbon isotope effect proved by Huang et al. (1999). The d13C value of products, ethanol, display the evidence that propane hydroxylation by sMMO or pMMO is no carbon isotope effect. M. Capsulatus (Bath) fermented by semi-continuous flow method could harvest high density (7-10 g/L) and good quality sMMO cell. After copper ion (Cu (II)) regulation, pMMO will be expressed. sMMO and pMMO also can extract by semi-purified method. Propane tracer oxidated by MMO and downgraded by chemical cleavage. After GC-C-IRMS (Gas Chromatography-Combustion- Isotope Ratio Mass) detection and calculation, the d13CEtoH and D (d13CMe - d13Cco) are sMMO extract (d13CEtOH = -27.61±0.41‰ , 4.46±1.88‰)、pMMO extract (-27.13±0.31‰ , 1.58±1.45‰) and sMMO cell (-27.20‰±0.10‰ , 1.98±0.62‰), compare to tracer (-27.20±0.10‰ , 1.98±0.62‰), it shows that there is no carbon isotope effect during propane hydroxylation by sMMO and pMMO。

The article treats relation between coefficient of permeability of sand and blocking magnitude, by permeameter obtains coefficient of permeability of sand, porosity, blocking magnitude and so on, differentiates theory method and actual value to compare blocking magnitude, and corrects theory method in order to accord with actual condition. The permeameter uses normal sand, compound sand, live sand to do pure water permeameter and cloudy water permeameter. First, separates nine layer from experimental sand to do pure water permeameter, measures flow of every time and different water of every layer, then uses the Darcy's law deduce coefficient of permeability of every layer, follow emptying molecule sand of pass two hundred number normal sieve to experimental device does cloudy water permeameter, measures change of flow of every time and different water of every layer, then deduces coefficient of permeability of every time and every layer, the result of cloudy water permeameter shows, the coefficient of permeability of normal sand is maximum, compound sand is second, live sand is least, and change of flow is opposite. From the change of different water of cloudy water permeameter knows, stratosphere different water is large greater than other layer, show blocking condition exists in stratosphere, then computes blocking magnitude, differentiate theory approximate method and actual observation method gets blocking magnitude. Before using theory method, needs to correct particle size distribution, because enter molecule sand of pass two hundred number normal sieve changes original particle size distribution, so needs to correct particle size distribution once again. After compares theory approximate value and actual observation value, obtains difference of them. The result shows, the theory approximate value and actual observation value of normal sand is close, compound sand is second, live sand is large difference. The normal sand differentiates 2.49 times, the compound sand differentiates 8.08 times, the live sand differentiates 8.30 times.

Liu Chang-Yuan is an active composer in Contemporary China. His work for Chinese orchestra Lyrical Variations, composed in 2003, was awarded the second place of the 9th National Music Composition Contest, thus rising and became one of his representative works. Dream Interpretation, the main piece discussed in this paper, was commissioned by Shanghai Chinese Orchestra in 2011, and was also Liu’s first concerto for erhu, triggering the author to study and deeply probe in this piece and the composer’s composing idea. The study takes the erhu composition Dream Interpretation as the main object, and aims to integrate and clarify Liu Chang-Yuan’s composing background and concepts through interviews and document analysis, to comprehend composer’s composing methods and style based on musical analysis, and for the music interpretation, to reconstruct individual concept of recreation on the foundation of audiovisual observation, musical analysis and personal viewpoint. Dream Interpretation is the only erhu concerto, finished in 2011, among Liu Chang Yuan’s compositions for Chinese orchestra. The piece fully presents Liu Chang Yuan’s composing idea of thematic motive, playing the limited transposition with pentatonic scale, and making its ten sections diverse through little variations in melodic pattern, rhythm, melodies and etc. The whole piece, on one hand, contains an aesthetic orientation towards the pentatonic music in traditional Chinese music, and, on the other hand, also fuses with composing techniques of western-like 20 century music; the mentioned has elevated the artistry of the piece, and encouraged traditional music to absorb essences of western music. These traits not only bring fresh air to the audiences, but also, most important of all, make the piece continually passed on.

Sex ratio at birth in China has been gradually increasing since the 1980s. It has been much higher than the normal range of 102~107, and the imbalance were significant differences in space. For this reason, the main purpose of this study was to understand the imbalance of China''s sex ratio at birth, and to explore the factors leading to sex ratio at birth distribution in China. This study used china''s 2352 counties as the object of research, and selected China''s fifth census data as the main body. Spatial econometric analysis was utilized including traditional regression model and spatial regression model. It was found that the level of sex ratio at birth was not evenly distributed. The main factor affecting the spatial aggregation of sex ratio at birth was the conflict between fertility space and gender preferences, and next was the preference of neighbors. We also found that the sex ratio at birth was negatively related to ethnic cultures, women''s social status, population policy, and positively related to the average number of children alive. However, under the explanation of the model, there were still some regions could not fully be explained; the reasons might be that they were affected by the factors of special historical and cultural background.

This research establishes a simple method to analyze the curvature ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) beam sections. The procedure of this method is quite straightforward and easy to apply, and can be used to evaluate curvature ductility ratio of RC beam sections. The section analysis, which complies with complete composite and strain compatibility conditions of 648 RC beam sections, was carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of RC beam sections. As well, a correlation between the curvature ductility ratio and the depth of the neutral axis was established with fairly good agreement. Finally, the simple semi-empirical equations for curvature ductility ratio of reinforced concrete beam sections were derived. These semi-empirical formulas will be facilitated to use in the design of RC beam sections to meet both the moment and curvature ductility requirements.

BitTorrent is the most widely used Peer-to-Peer file sharing protocol on the internet. It had been the largest consumer of internet traffic for years, until surpassed by Netflix in recent years. The unique mechanisms and the built-in incentives that distinguish BitTorrent from other P2P file sharing protocols result in excellent utilization and scalability, making it the top choice for file sharing communities. One of the problems of the built-in incentives is that it lacks the incentive to encourage peers to stay seeding after they finished downloading. So a lot of the communities have incorporated a mechanism called Sharing Ratio Enforcement to compensate it. In this paper we study the impact of the SRE mechanism on the system performance of the BitTorrent systems. We derive a mathematical model that is capable of predicting the time that all peers finish downloading under a flash crowd scenario and heterogeneous network with an arbitrary number of classes of peers. Furthermore, we incorporate our model with a model from a previous work by Liao et al. to make it capable of modeling a system that the system throughput is capped on the downlink instead of the uplink. Finally we propose that the leechers can strategically select from which peers to download when there are too many seeders in the system that the uploading throughput is larger than the downloading throughput of the system. We study how this modification influences the system performance by using our model.
