Abstract:
In this paper, bender elements are used as sensors to measure the damping ratio of soil by the spectral-ratio method. The results of numerical and physical experiments suggest that adequate measurement precision can be achieved by reducing the two types of inherent biases arising from (i) the near-field effect and (ii) the different transfer functions of the two receiver bender elements. The first bias can be avoided by setting sensors to r1/λ ≥ 2.0 and r1/r2 ≥ 2.0, where r1 and r2 are the distances between the source and the first and second receivers, respectively; and λ is the wavelength. Applying the ratio-of-uniforms method for generating random variates results in very efficient, fast and easy to implement algorithms. However parameters for every particular type of density must be precalculated analytically. In this paper we show, that the ratio-of-uniforms method is also useful for the design of a black-box algorithm suitable for a large class of distributions, including all with log-concave densities. Using polygonal envelopes and squeezes results in an algorithm that is extremely fast. In opposition to any other ratio-of-uniforms algorithm the expected number of uniform r

We use inequalities to design short universal algorithms that can be used to generate random variates from large classes of univariate continuous or discrete distributions (including all log-concave distributions). The expected time is uniformly bounded over all these distributions for a particular generator. The algorithms can be implemented in a few lines of high level language code. With higher demands on biomass, the ability to accurately estimate the amount in a stand is more important now than ever before. Existing models currently in use by the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service include the Component Ratio Method (CRM). However, testing of the CRM models is needed to validate and calibrate them. The objective of this research was to test and develop a system of equations capable of producing consistent volume and biomass estimates for standing trees of commercially important hardwood species

Theoretical considerations and empirical results show that the one-dimensional quality of non-uniform random numbers is bad and the discrepancy is high when they are generated by the ratio of uniforms method combined with linear congruential generators. This observation motivates the suggestion to replace the ratio of uniforms method by transformed rejection (also called exact approximation or almost exact inversion), as the above problem does not occur for this method. Loss of Mains (LOM) occurs when part of the utility network containing distributed generation (DG) is disconnected from the remainder of the system. Detecting LOM will become more important in the future as higher amounts of DG will be connected to increase the use of renewable energy sources, to reduce emissions and to reduce power transmission losses. In some cases, DG can be capable of supplying loads within an island and the islanded system can remain stable. However, safety issues arise if LOM persists and, accordingly, islanded operation is not permitted in the majority of utility system

Abstract:
This research explores the impact of kinematic structural nonlinearities on the dynamics of a highly deformable cantilevered wing. Two different theoretical formulations are presented and analysed for nonlinear behavior. The first formulation, which is more conventional, assumes zero equilibrias and structural nonlinearities occur as terms up to third order in the Taylor series expansion of structural nonlinearities. In the second approach, no prior assumption about equilibria states of the wing is made. Kinematic nonlinearities due to curvature and inertia were retained in their exact form. T

Abstract:
This study demonstrates the applicability of using a modified application strategy of panel method to analyze low aspect ratio wings at preliminary design phases. Conventional panel methods fail to capture the leading edge vortex (LEV) that is shed by wings with low aspect ratios, typically below 2 depending on planform. This aerodynamic phenomenon contributes to a significant amount of the lift of these wings and the result is a drastic underestimation of the lift characteristics when analyzed by conventional panel method. To capture the effect of the leading edge vortex, a panel method code
