Abstract:
75 years of Polish medicine and pharmacy in Wrocław. Selected elements from the history of higher education in Wrocław. Part one (1945–1949) Professional training in medicine and pharmacy had begun in Wrocław by the fall of 1945. The Faculty of Medicine was created within the structure of Wrocław University and Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Two departments were established within it: the Pharmaceutical and Dentistry departments. In 1950, a specialized medical school was developed from the University, functioning briefly under the name of the Medical Academy (which was changed to the Academy of Medicine), already with an independent Faculty of Pharmacy. In 1979, the Medical Analytics Department was established within the Faculty of Pharmacy (which ceased its activities in 2020). In 1978, the Faculty of Nursing was created which was transformed into the Faculty of Public Health in 2001 and into the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2008. Starting in 1989, the school was called the Academy of Medicine in Wrocław (Akademia Medyczna im. Piastów Śląskich). In 1992, the Post-Graduate Faculty of Medicine (existing until the academic year 2019/2020) was distinguished from the Faculty of Medicine. In 2000, the Department of Dentistry was transformed into the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. As a part of the school, liberal arts and social studies connected with medicine were also developed in units located within the structure of various departments of the AM. The Academy of Medicine in Wrocław existed until 2011 when the decision was made to transform it into Wrocław Medical University (Uniwersytet Medyczny im. Piastów Śląskich), functioning until now. The article presents the major stages in the history of medical schools in Wroclaw after 1945, taking into consideration the external factors that had an effect on the changes occurring in them. It also presents their results. It consists of three parts. The first one presents the most important aspects of the history of the Faculty of Medicine of Wrocław University and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in the years 1945–1949. The second part discusses the history of the Academy of Medicine in the years 1950–2011, and the third one of Wrocław Medical University in the years 2011–2020. The article contains an extensive bibliography of studies concerning the history of these schools as well as the system of public medicine in Poland in the years 1945–2020, providing the context for their activities.

Abstract:
Czechs in Wrocław during Euro 2012. A contribution to the analysis of the Polish-Czech social relationsThe aim of the article is to analyse the Polish-Czech relations on a social platform, seen through the prism of the football event—Euro 2012. The text opens with a glance at a broader context of these relations generated by mutual stereotypes and the media coverage of certain peculiarities of both national cultures. Then it goes on to giving quite detailed a record of the atmosphere created by the Polish and Czechs fans during the tournament, which was written into the conception of pop nationalism. The whole picture is enriched with an attempt to refer the situation observed in Wrocław to the attitudes Poles generally have to Czechs, expressed by means of statistical data as well as features of character traditionally ascribed to this nation in Poland. Czesi we Wrocławiu podczas Euro 2012. Przyczynek do analizy polsko-czeskich relacji społecznychCelem artykułu jest przeprowadzenie analizy relacji polsko-czeskich na płaszczyźnie społecznej, widzianych przez pryzmat wydarzenia piłkarskiego – Euro 2012. Tekst otwiera spojrzenie na szerszy kontekst owych relacji, tworzony przez wzajemne stereotypy oraz przekazy medialne dotyczące niektórych osobliwości obu kultur narodowych. Następnie przedstawiono dosyć szczegółowy zapis atmosfery stworzonej przez polskich i czeskich kibiców podczas rzeczonego turnieju, co zostało wpisane w pojęcie banalnego nacjonalizmu. Cały obraz jest wzbogacony o próbę odniesienia sytuacji zaobserwowanej we Wrocławiu do postaw, jakie Polacy, ogólnie rzecz biorąc, posiadają wobec Czechów. Nastawienia te wyrażono za pomocą danych statystycznych, jak również cech charakteru tradycyjnie przypisywanych temu narodowi w Polsce.

Abstract:

The Court of Appeal in Wrocław, in its judgement of 29 October 2019 (I ACa 698/19) amending the judgement of the District Court of Wrocław of 28 February 2019 (I C733/18), declared invalid the acquisition of a real property by a South Korean citizen. In its judgement, the Court of Appeal in Wrocław interpreted Article 8 (2) of the Act of 24 March 1920 on the Acquisition of Real Property by Foreigners. This provision governs the subjective scope of the exemption from the obligation to obtain the authorisation from the minister competent for interior affairs for the acquisition of real property. The Court of Appeal has concluded that a natural person who is a foreign person within the meaning of the Act on the Acquisition of Real Property by Foreigners and who is not a citizen of the European Economic Area Member State or the Swiss Confederation, even though pursues individual economic activity in the territory of the Republic of Poland, shall not be entitled to the exemption provided for in Article 8 (2) of the Act on the Acquisition of Real Property by Foreigners concerning nationals and undertakings of the Member States of the European Economic Area agreement or the Swiss Confederation, as this would be contrary to the function of the Act on the Acquisition of Real Property by Foreigners and the systemic and teleological interpretation of Article 8 (2) of this Act.

Abstract:
Contemporary Orthodox church art in Poland is an issue that influences many areas of research. Current research focuses both on the work of individual artists, as well as on new formal solutions used by them, and aimed at enriching the Orthodox tradition. Apart from Jerzy Nowosielski and Adam Stalony-Dobrzański, who contributed to the renaissance of Orthodox church art in Poland, the works of Sotyrys Pantopulos and their correct attribution also deserve more attention. Two sets of icons depicting the Pantocrator and the Virgin Mary painted in 1969 by Pantopulos for the iconostasis designed by Stalony-Dobrzański for the Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Wrocław and the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Gródek near Białystok are examples of this. For many years their authorship was mainly attributed to Stalony-Dobrzański. Today, both pairs of icons found a secondary location as a result of the reconstruction of an iconostasis (Gródek, 1995) or its dismantling (Wrocław, 2019) – in this case, according to the opinion of the church’s custodians, as a structure that does not meet the requirements of the Orthodox liturgy. For that reason art historians have an urgent task to bring the importance of these works to public attention, and ultimately to have them entered into the heritage register. It appears that this is the only chance to preserve this legacy in an unchanged condition.

Abstract:
IMAGE OF POLAND (SECOND POLISH REPUBLIC, POLISH PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC AND THIRD POLISH REPUBLIC) IN MODERN UKRAINIAN HISTORY TEXTBOOKS The article analyses which image of Poland is present in modern Ukrainian textbooks of history for pupils of 10th and 11th forms (regarding the period since 1918 till present) that were written after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 and were published during 2018-2019. The study is based on content analysis of 30 textbooks on The History of Ukraine, World History and the integrated course “History: Ukraine and the World” for pupils of 10th and 11th forms. In order to determine how positive or negative is the image of Poland that is formed in the mind of the reader, the 4th year students of the History Department of Mykhaylo Kotsiubynsky Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University were asked to determine the number of mentions of the words Poland, Polish, the Poles etc. with positive, neutral and negative connotation in every textbook. The obtained results were then subject to quality analysis. We may observe the ambiguous reflection of the image of Poland in Ukrainian history schoolbooks, which is a logical reflection of long-lasting and complex historical relations between the Poles and the Ukrainians. In general, the image of Poland in The History of Ukraine textbooks is worse than the one presented in the World History textbooks as the authors were forced to show different sides of Polish-Ukrainian interaction in the 20th century. However, real historical conditions for Polish-Ukrainian friendship and cooperation at the current stage and the results of the work of the Joint International Committee of Experts on Improving the Content of School Textbooks have undoubtedly influenced the situation – in spite of highlighting truly difficult relations between the two peoples, the “enemy image” of Poland is not formed; attention is mostly focused on broad political, social, cultural and other circumstances that have led to ambiguous situations in Polish-Ukrainian relations. At the world history level authors mostly focused on presenting Poland as a victim of totalitarian regimes and a symbol of the fight for freedom. The negative part of the image of Poland goes back to the confrontation between the Polish and the Ukrainians in the 1st half of the 20th century (after the events of World War I) and the positive side is based on unity in resisting totalitarianism, protection of democracy, integration into the EU and NATO. Consequently, the image of the Second Polish Republic and the Polish Republic of 1944-1952 is worse that the image of the Third Polish Republic (the image of Polish People’s Republic is very indistinct altogether). This image of Poland, which is gradually improving in Ukrainian textbooks of history from 1918 to 2018 is an indicator of good prospects for further international cooperation as the pupils see the positive dynamics and will be able to continue this process.

Abstract:
W pierwszej części badań zostały wykorzystane niereaktywne metody typu desk-research, natomiast w drugiej części badań autorzy zastosowali metodę wizji lokalnej omawianych przykładów, tj.: a) Riverview w Gdańsku, b) Fort Śliwickiego w Warszawie oraz c) Kurkowa 14 we Wrocławiu. Badania doprowadziły do przedstawienia rekomendacji mających na celu poprawę jakości środowisk mieszkaniowych w Polsce. Quality of housing environments in Poland – issue analysis Today’s housing conditions in Poland are relatively improving, as proven by numerous quantitative statistical data. However, it often happens that new developments deviate from the quality standards of 21st century housing environments. The aim of the publication is to present the author’s analysis of the housing situation in Poland. The authors will discuss the problematic in two research issues: a critical way analyzing the mechanisms of the realization of today’s housing development (realized after 2000), and a positive way on the example of three case studies of high quality housing environments realized in Poland. In the first part of the research, non-reactive desk-research methods were used, while in the second part of the research, the authors applied a site inspection of the discussed residential environments, i.e.: a) Riverview in Gdańsk, b) Fort Śliwickiego in Warsaw, and c) Kurkowa 14 in Wrocław. The conclusion of the research presented recommendations to improve the quality of residential environments in Poland.
