Abstract:
Leaf thicknesses of Salix taxa (Salix brachycarpa Nutt. var. psammophila Raup, Salix planifolia Pursh subsp. tyrrellii (Raup) Argus, Salix silicicola Raup, and Salix turnorii Raup) from the Athabasca sand dunes in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, were evaluated and compared with those of their respective widespread progenitors (S. brachycarpa Nutt. var. brachycarpa, S. planifolia Pursh subsp. planifolia, Salix alaxensis (Anders.), and Salix eriocephala Michx. var. famelica (C. R. Ball) Dorn). Leaf thickness was measured using standard light microscopy, and results were compared with the occurrence of amphistomaty in these Salix species. Leaf thickness values varied among the species and differed significantly within each derivative–progenitor Salix pair. The two amphistomatic taxa from Yakow Lake dunes, S. turnorii and S. planifolia subsp. tyrrellii, had significantly thicker leaves (337.65 ± 5.99 µm and 226.00 ± 5.22 µm, respectively) than their widespread progenitors, as well as the thickest leaves overall. The data comparison indicates a relationship between amphistomaty and leaf thickness among the Salix taxa, as thicker leaves tend to be amphistomatic.Key words: amphistomaty, Athabasca sand dunes, leaf thickness, Salix, willow.

Abstract:
Change has been the rule in the history of life. Mammals today dominate the terrestrial habitats where dinosaurs once held sway. In modern oceans, ecologists can study many species of arthropods, but trilobites are long gone. Using data from the fossil record, David Raup estimated that only about one in a thousand species that ever lived on this planet is still alive today (Raup, 1991). On the other hand, the number of species and higher taxa has increased steadily over geologic time. Thus the history of life is essentially a history of turnover of species, lineages, and higher taxa over time.

Abstract:
The Athabasca Sand Dunes of northern Saskatchewan support 10 endemic vascular plant taxa listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). The Athabasca Sand Dunes are subject to acidic deposition; the potential impacts of which are a significant knowledge gap to a comprehensive reassessment of the conservation status of these taxa. We used a greenhouse experiment to assess the potential effects of acidic deposition on the root system morphology of the following three endemic species: Armeria maritima (P. Mill) Willd. ssp. interior (Raup) Porsild, Deschampsia mackenzieana Raup, and Stellaria arenicola Raup. We found limited effects of three pH treatments on root diameter, root length, surface area, and branching. Although acidic deposition is likely not a short-term threat, current and future deposition still may be a significant long-term threat. The Athabasca Sand Dune soils are considered highly sensitive, and acidification and nutrient leaching can take several decades to manifest. This should be considered when assessing the conservation status of these endemic taxa, particularly A. maritima, as this species may be more sensitive than the other species to acidic deposition owing to a small population size and limited habitat breadth.

Abstract:
We examine the distribution of the relative fractional fluctuation of the magnetisation of a 3D Ising ferromagnet at the critical temperature Tc by considering a histogram of frequency of the fractional magnetisation. The distribution is highly non-Gaussian and is reminiscent of the histogram of extinction intensity for fossil genera shown by Raup1 (1991) (see also Newman (1996)). The graph of relative fractional change ofmagnetisation vs MC time is compatible in appearance with the graph showing the variation of the number of extinction of families of marine animals with time (over hundreds of millions of years) given by Raup (1991), Sepkoski (1993) or Newman (1996). Our results show a power law dependence usually taken as evidence for the existence of a critical system.

Abstract:
Regardless of the macroevolutionary issues at stake, most students of biodiversity would agree that there is value in calibrating global biodiversity trends through critical intervals. To cite one obvious example, given the overwhelming interest in mass extinctions, we would certainly like to know the extent to which diversity declined during these events. Just as significantly, if we are to argue that any mass extinction was truly a global phenomenon, we must demonstrate definitively that its biotic effects reached around the world. Clearly, “standard” global compendia (e.g., Sepkoski 1992, 2002) are insufficient for the latter objective, because they contain no geographic or environmental information. At the least, a database that compares biodiversity transitions among different regions or paleoenvironments is required. Such analyses have the added benefit of providing opportunities to evaluate geographic and environmental selectivity in extinctions, an important facet of any attempt to understand what caused them (e.g., Raup and Jablonski 1993; Jablonski and Raup 1995).

MacFarland, Kathryn Anne, and Kathryn Anne MacFarland. "Religious and Ritualized Landscapes of Iron Age North Central Eurasia." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626359.

Full text
Abstract:
Animal Style Art (ASA), an iconographic style expressed on monuments and material culture, is a geographically widespread phenomenon in north central Eurasia during the Iron Age (ca. 1,000 BCE – 100 CE). Frequently depicted elements of this style include composite animals composed of animal elements fused together to create a new mythical animal; a stylized geometric design within the animal; and an interaction of some kind (e.g., one figure attacking another, figures standing nearby, single animal). The research presented in this dissertation focuses on the possibility that ASA constitutes evidence for a pan-regional religion in north central Eurasia during the Iron Age. Systematic study of ancient texts, ethnography, archaeological remains, and a detailed stylistic analysis of the complex elements of ASA, have all contributed to this research. This analysis is an artifact-focused macro-scale (continental) study of ASA, breaking down the cultural contexts as well as the geographical and chronological distribution in which it occurs, and the elements of the style itself, analyzing patterns of occurrence and similarity throughout north central Eurasia. This has been accomplished by the creation of a database, specifically designed as a museum curation tool and as a Geographic Information System (GIS) resulting in a dataset of 4,633 catalog lots (a single object or set). These data contribute to the identification of internal patterns in the expression of this iconographic style between regions of north central Eurasia and is inferred as evidence for symbolic expression of religious belief. This claim is evaluated in a variety of ways focusing on three themes: mobility, political structure and social complexity, and religious belief. This first attempt at continental scale expression of symbolic systems directly tied to conceptual metaphors and religious belief has resulted in the preliminary identification of a religious landscape among all the regions, to varying degrees throughout the Iron Age. These findings help explain the widespread distribution of ASA in north central Eurasia during the Iron Age.

Abstract:

Lim, David Eng Chung. "Investigation in to ramp queues vs. freeway queues on ramp metered freeways." Thesis, Curtin University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1676.

Full text
Abstract:
Freeways and highways form an integral part of any road network system demanding significant quantities of resources to plan and construct. During times of congestion and flow breakdown forms of traffic management are required to maintain the efficiency, reliability and safety of these high asset road facilities. Here within lies the responsibilities of traffic engineering professionals. The lack of adequate maintenance and management of any urban road network system hinders economic development and quality of life.Ramp metering is an active traffic management system implemented on high speed, free flowing facilities such as freeways and highways. This form of intelligent transport system has been applied to freeways throughout the world to regulate the intensity and demand proportion of freeway inflow during peak demand periods. The primary goal is to manage the existing roadway to operate at maximum efficiency. Main Roads Western Australia, the governing road authority in Western Australia is currently in a position to investigate the suitability of ramp metering on Western Australia's freeways. This research demonstrates how traffic movement and interaction can be mapped and characterised to identify forms of traffic flow breakdown that ramp metering has the potential to address. This research also documents the required components of ramp metering, how it should operate and the potential this active management system has to be applied over a system wide road network infrastructure. The Mitchell Freeway southbound direction undergoes significant forms of congestion and traffic flow breakdown during the morning peak period. A traffic characteristic of the Mitchell Freeway was developed to make an evaluation for the suitability of ramp metering as an effective management system. An analytical comparison between current freeway queues and theoretical on-ramp queues provided indication that the congestion and flow breakdown currently observed had the potential to be managed through ramp metering, ensuring the future sustainability of this vital freeway for the city of Perth, Western Australia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has economic and environmental impacts. This report investigates the prospective use of RAP in preservation treatments (mainly chip sealing and microsurfacing) in Illinois. A review of the current state of knowledge and practice was conducted. The economic and logistic feasibility of using RAP in preservation treatments in Illinois were investigated. Data were collected on RAP availability in the state followed by a survey distributed to district engineers and highway construction contractors. The survey asked about the availability of RAP, its viability in preservation treatments, and the readiness for its application. A unit price analysis was conducted to assess the financial viability of using RAP compared to virgin aggregate. The results suggested there was an excess of good quality and fractionated RAP, and contractors are open to using RAP in various applications. Considering contract unit prices in Illinois, no significant difference would be expected when RAP is used in place of virgin aggregate. Hence, using RAP in preservation treatments would probably make preservation treatments more viable. Economic and environmental analyses demonstrated that using RAP in preservation treatments would reduce the impact on the environment by reducing energy, global warming potential, and greenhouse gases while providing cost savings. A simple decision tool was developed to provide guidance on using RAP in preservation treatments.
