Castellucci, Alan, and Luca Collini.

Abstract:

Cory, Emily Faun. "The Rooftop Raven Project: An Exploratory, Qualitative Study of Puzzle Solving Ability in Wild and Captive Ravens." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/612873.

Abstract:
The family Corivdae, which includes crows and ravens, contains arguably some of the most intelligent species the animal kingdom has to offer. Separated from primates by at least 252 million years of evolution, birds bear striking physiological differences from mammals, while displaying similar intellectual abilities. This apparent convergent evolution of intelligence sheds light on what could possibly be a universal phenomenon. While many excellent studies show the abilities of corvids, the majority of them test only captive subjects. This study tested the capabilities of both captive and wild ravens, from three different species. The first portion of the study tested which of the four solutions offered wild ravens would choose when solving a Multi-Access Box. The second portion of the study tested the performance of wild and captive ravens when solving a Multi-Latch Box. The nine raven subjects were split into four different levels of enculturation based on their known histories. Two wild common ravens (Corvus corax) on the campus of the University of Arizona were level 1, four wild common ravens in the parking lot of a United States Forest Service parking lot were level 2, two captive and trained Chihuahuan ravens (Corvus cryptoleucus) from the Raptor Free Flight program at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum comprised level 3, and one captive and trained white-necked raven (Corvus albicollis) made level 4. It is possible to run trials with completely wild and free birds. It was found that ravens prefer direct methods of obtaining food, such as opening doors and pulling strings, instead of tool use. It was also found that while the relationship between enculturation level and success solving a puzzle was not linear, captive birds were the best solvers. The data given here suggest that captivity, training and enrichment history, and enculturation should all be considered when performing cognitive studies with animals.

Germeck, Karl. "“Speaking With” the Ravine: Representation and Memory in Five Cultural Productions of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/867.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the rich and layered intertextual relationship between five artisticrepresentations of the razed neighborhoods of Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles, and its former residents. These works include Seattle-based photographer Don Normark’s 1999 photography collection Chávez Ravine, 1949: A Los Angeles Story; the full-length dramatic play Chavez Ravine, written and first performed by Los Angeles-based Chicano comedy troupe Culture Clash in 2003; Jordan Mechner’s 2004 short documentary film Chávez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story; Ry Cooder’s musical album Chávez Ravine: A Record by Ry Cooder; and lastly, high school history teacher Ken Aven’s 2006 debut novel, Chavez Ravine Echoes. Together, these five productions make up a case study that engages with the theoretical debate about privileged groups speaking for, or on behalf of, underrepresented groups. This analysis emphasizes a process of representation that is shared and driven by dialogue between the artists of these productions and the place and people they represent. Through the inclusion of resident involvement in the production process and the weaving of narrative elements from both Mexican American and dominant cultural traditions, these projects promote the Ravine’s cultural wealth and visibility within a popular culture dominated by the symbol of Dodger Stadium. This study, through close readings and textual analysis, demonstrates how these works, considered together, open up spaces for cross-cultural discussions about Chavez Ravine and the various roles it plays within U.S. cultural history. More importantly, these five representations of Chavez Ravine figuratively practice and promote a “speaking to and with” model of intercultural communication between dominant and minority cultures.

Peebles, Luke W. "Winter Ecology of Common Ravens in Southern Wyoming and the Effects of Raven Removal on Greater Sage-Grouse Populations." DigitalCommons@USU, 2015. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4617.

Full text
Abstract:
My research focused on common raven (Corvus corax; hereafter raven) winter ecology and removal, and how raven removal aids Greater sage-grouse (Centrocerus urophasiansu; hereafter sage-grouse) populations. Raven winter ecology in the western US has not been described in detail. I researched raven use of landfills for foraging and raven use of anthropogenic structures for roosting, as well as dispersal of ravens in the spring. In all 22% of radio-marked ravens (n=73) used landfills during the day, and 68%(n=73) roosted at anthropogenic roost sites during the evening. Correlations between landfill and roost counts of ravens were stronger (0.4>r<0.7) when the distance between these sites was <15 km, and smaller (r<0.3) when this distance >20 km. In the spring, ravens dispersed, on average, 38 km from landfills where they were caught. Large congregations of ravens at a few sites in winter may present opportunities to initiate raven population reduction methods to alleviate later problems. I analyzed raven survival and behaviour when USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services (WS) removed ravens using DRC-1339 during winter months. The number of ravens killed annually was 7-34% of the local population. Ravens did not avoid landfills, yet they switched roosts more frequently after an application of the toxicant. Raven removal improves sage-grouse nest success; however, data were not available to examine how raven removal improves sage-grouse abundance. I analyzed changes in raven density with regard to WS removal, and then related these changes with changes in sage-grouse lek counts the following year. Raven densities decreased by 50% from 2008-2014 where WS conducted removal programs. Sage-grouse lek counts improved in area where WS lowered raven abundance, in comparison to areas farther away, during the latter half of the study (2013-2015), when WS removal efforts intensified. Thereafter, a 10% decline in raven abundance was associated with a 2% increase in sage-grouse lek counts. Overall, ravens in souther Wyoming used anthropogenic resources during the winter, and removal of ravens at these locations, combined with removal in the spring, minimally impacted raven populations annually and was associated with increases in sage-grouse abundance.

Abstract:
Slope processes are important to understand if we are to protect fragile environments. Every year slope development in weak soils put nearby infrastructure in risk zones of sliding and ravine erosion takes away field areal from farmers as they grow even larger. Many methods for doing a risk analysis of a slope and its soil are complicated and require a lot of equipment. A simple way to do a slope investigation is explained in this report, along with its advantages and disadvantages. The authors construct a shear ring, an apparatus to measure peak shear stress of soils before fracturing. LIDAR scanning of two small ravines are also made to illustrate how laser scanning can be used to accurately measure denudation in slopes. The results vary, the shear ring is mostly a success aside from errors caused by difficulty in taking representative samples and disturbance. Some of the laboratory work made to determine material properties fail at giving good results, often a result of bad samples or disturbance in the tests. The LIDAR is determined to be a good instrument when working with slope development.<br>Sluttningsprocesser är viktiga att förstå och studera om vi ska kunna skydda känsliga områden.

Abstract:
A contenção da ravina maior foi classificada como média eficiência e, da menor, como de muito alta eficiência.<br>This work was carried out in southern escarpment of the Serra Mantiqueira, city of Pindamonhangaba within an area adjacent to the Plateau of Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo state, Brazil, and claimed as a result to reverse environmental damage caused by the rupture of an adductor of water located at 1700 m altitude. This accident resulted in the formation of a scar in the hillside forest, with its removal of soil and vegetation. To reverse the erosion processes created at the site a new technique was developed using four barriers formed by seedlings of Bambusa mutiplex (Lour.) in order to divert the waters and promote the regeneration of vegetation. For containment of two ravines, called lower and higher, stalks of bamboo (Bambusa sp.) were installed on the walls of the ravines with intercropped planting of seedlings B. multiplex. The project was monitored for 18 months and its evaluation was done through observations of field and fill in sheet. Subsequently, the data were applied to an adaptation of the Leopold Matrix composed of five monitored aspects: erosion, regeneration of vegetation, the success of bamboo plantation, preservation of the structures and functionality, which sought to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions with the bamboo. The result of the classification matrix enabled the qualitative and quantitative interventions, resulting in five levels of classification. The barriers I, II and IV were classified as being of very high efficiency, and the Barrier III as a high efficiency. The containment of the higher ravine was classified as medium average efficiency, the lower, as a very high efficiency.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on quantifying explicitly the sediment budget of deeply incised ravines in the lower Le Sueur River watershed, in southern Minnesota. High-rate-gully-erosion equations along with the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) were implemented in a numerical modeling approach that is based on a time-integration of the sediment balance equations. The model estimates the rates of ravine width and depth change and the amount of sediment periodically flushing from the ravines. Components of the sediment budget of the ravines were simulated with the model and results suggest that the ravine walls are the major sediment source in the ravines. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the erodibility coefficients of the gully bed and wall, the local slope angle and the Manning’s coefficient are the key parameters controlling the rate of sediment production. Recommendations to guide further monitoring efforts in the watershed and increased detail modeling approaches are highlighted as a result of this modeling effort.

Abstract:
<p> This study examines and analyzes displacement, under the guise of redevelopment, in urban Mexican communities in Los Angeles-- Ch&aacute;vez Ravine (1944-1959) and Boyle Heights (2000-2015). This investigation also chronicles and interprets the urban renewal process as a systematic attack on the Mexican working- class and disenfranchisement of their communities. This analysis presents qualitative evidence to show the individual impacts associated with involuntary displacement. Furthermore these cases of displacement blocked the economic mobility of displaced residents of Ch&aacute;vez Ravine and Boyle Heights and the impact extends beyond those directly displaced. Beyond gentrification, a review of these cases, within approximately seven decades of displacement patterns, reveal the broader politics of contesting Mexican social and economic status in Los Angeles. Redevelopment maintains an economic and social order that intergenerationally disadvantages Mexican populations.</p>

Abstract:
This case study investigates the organizational characteristics of a Haitiangrassroots community human rights council (CHRC) that emerged as a response to threepolitically motivated massacres. The impromptu grassroots response of this poor urbancommunity is at the core of the following research question investigated in this study:What organizational characteristics influence the efforts made by the Grande RavineCommunity Human Rights Council to resolve socio-cultural and socio-political conflicts? One of the problems encountered was the suspicion by armed groups believing that thepresident of the organization was informing the police and the United Nationspeacekeepers about their activities. The complex dynamics of the Grande Ravineneighborhood lead to additional questions about building community capacity. Thisraised the possibility of removing the CHRC as an organization that monitors humanrights and expanding its role to include teaching about human rights and theresponsibilities that go with protecting them. A question for further study would bewhether or not a community-based human rights group can make a positive difference inresolving and diminishing socio-cultural and socio-political conflicts in similarneighborhoods.

Full text
Abstract:
Raven is an object-oriented distributed system designed to support research in building fault-tolerance distributed systems using an object model. Invocations on Raven objects are executed within a transaction mechanism with provisions for application controlled relaxations. Central to Raven underlying system support is the Object Manager which is responsible for secondary storage management of objects, concurrency control, transaction management, objects distribution and migration, recovery from failures and virtual memory management. Raven objects are encapsulated into object spaces and primary memory is simply used as a cache to object spaces in secondary storage or in remote machines. The physical layout of an object space in primary memory is identical to its layout in secondary storage. An object space represents a unit of concurrency control and recovery in Raven. Raven design integrates virtual memory management, secondary storage management and transaction management into one computation model implemented inside an Object Manager. This allows a highly efficient implementation of the Object Manager. The major work of this thesis is devoted to the design and implementations of the Object Manager in Raven.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Computer Science, Department of<br>Graduate

Pugh, Peter Richard. "A political biography of Alexander Raven Thomson." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3427/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has been an attempt to isolate the contribution that was made to the fascist movements of Sir Oswald Mosley by Alexander Raven Thomson. Despite featuring in most studies of Mosley's fascist enterprises, until this study little was known of his life and thus the proper context for his work had been lost. In this attempt to analyse Raven Thomson a chronological structure has been adopted. Special attention has, however, been placed on his developing thought in response to Oswald Spengler's prognosis for the future of Europe, before and after his acceptance of fascism in both its inter-war and post-war incarnations. This has enabled new insights into his Corporate State ideas within fascism and the anti-Semitic campaign within which he was an active participant, both of which had been the source of previous academic interest. Unlike other studies in this field which present the reader with either an examination of Mosley fascism to 1940 or British fascists after the war, this study bridges this artificial gap and thus seeks to illustrate the continuity of fascism in Britain. This longer period of study allows for wartime internment and Raven Thomson's part in the revival of fascism to be fully discussed. The result is a biography that attempts to place the subject within its proper context.

Abstract:
Whilst dance culture and 'clubbing' has exerted a huge influence on worldwide youth culture in recent decades, academic engagement with this leisure phenomenon has been limited both in scope and in methodological approach. In this thesis I adopt an interpretive, auto-ethnographic research approach to exploring contemporary dance culture with the aim of furthering alternative interdisciplinary approaches to leisure research. I also seek to broaden our understanding of the area by shifting the focus of attention to new areas of enquiry (specifically clubbers' motivations and preferences and the role of the dance music media), In addition, I examine the usefulness of the performance metaphor in understanding dance culture and argue for the conceptualisation of dance events as liminal spaces. Informed by a constructionist epistemological perspective, the thesis investigates the social realities of the dance culture participants and attempts to reveal the many and varied influences which shape the socio-cultural construction of dance culture. As would be expected in an auto-ethnographic approach, the thesis begins with an account of my own involvement in dance culture, followed by a contextualisation of contemporary dance culture which examines its development from illegal raves and warehouse parties into a highly structured/ commercialised leisure activity. This overview of the nature of dance culture also provides a critique of the academic literature on the topic and assesses work which has discussed its evolution and 'legitimacy' as an authentic youth subculture. The study approach is then outlined and the methods (namely auto-ethnography, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, online conversations and textual analysis) presented and discussed in detail, The thesis reveals the many and complex influences which attract clubbers to particular dance events and analyses contemporary dance culture under the themes of: the significance of travel; visual spectacle and the role of crowds; dress and performance; altered states; dance culture as youth culture; dancing, acceptance and belonging; the role of the media; and the influence of DJs. It emerges that issues of identity development, performance and self-fulfilment are central to participation in dance culture and I suggest that there are numerous parallels between immersion in dance culture and religious experiences. Participants described their travel to major dance events as spiritual journeys and notions of pilgrimage, visual spectacle, congregation and collective 'worship' imbue their accounts of their experiences. Analysis of the dance music media focusing on the role of DJs in dance culture also revealed powerful discourses of originality, authenticity and performance, Such discourses not only position these individuals as 'high priests' of dance music but also affirm the construction of dance sites as spaces of hedonism, liminality and the performance of alternative identities, Whilst the thesis attempts to provide an insight into the world of contemporary dance culture, it does not offer definitive conclusions; indeed, I would argue that it would be inappropriate to do so. Thus my final chapter is more of an epilogue and it considers the potential offered by incorporating diverse methodologies into the study of leisure and outlines an agenda for future research into dance culture and cognate areas.

Abstract:
Our work will be built around a central hypothesis : The unheard echo found by the narrative and scopic plot proposed by ISIS, is explained by its adequacy with the pangs of contemporary subjectivities. It is thus a question of studying the conditions of this encounter which captures the subject, wandering in the troubled waters of the archaic with a death offer distilled by the deviation of a pseudo-Islam of cruelty that seems to bring the illusion of ‘answer. Because from the outset in the young subjects that we receive, the « transplant » fantasy takes, such a passionate meeting between an agonistic subject, and a miracle solution that comes to offer the possibility of getting out of a subjectivity made of inconsistency to abandon fright and emptiness in favor of a lenient filling. Their terrorism is not born of an ideological project but draws its force from a subjective disaster to which it gives shape. In this, the imagery of ISIS comes to actualize the collapse Real / Imaginary (imaginary grandiose but death) in these agonic subjects. The obscene is then exhibited, the impulse scopic unleashed. The pure archaic remains that will punctuate the life and the acts of a subject of discontinuity, in the name of the return of the cleave, a repetition identical to the mortifère. In this paper, we are going to do a clinical study of subjects willing become martyrs based on our experience of a clinical psychologist in detention. The framework of this mission is dedicated to treatement of subjects coming back from Syria, or who has wanted to go there, or else showing a sudden morbid bascule, towards death trajectories in the name of god. We will focuse on the psychic incounscious motivations of such process : addiction, prejudice and their dialectic with the Ideal to interrogate these forms of contemporary melancholia for subjects who can only reach feeling of existence in project of divine death. We will try to illustrate our 3ypothèses according to which the dossilution of an inconsistent Ego in an nihilist Ideal Ego is the key to an understanding of what we currently call radicalization, in its most extreme form, that of people aspiring to martyrdom, wandering in the morbid zone of the archaic, the “chahids”

Abstract:
There is no Russian literature about the extermination of Jews, which would haveallowed, as it did in the West, a conception and transmission of a memory of the genocide, even though here perpetrated by Nazis on-site, in ravines and mass graves, and not in faraway camps. Literature tried to play a testimonial role but faced a swift series of prohibitions, mixtures, ideological manipulations that led to history’s denial of the genocide. The interferences with previous mass killings, attributable to the Soviet system (Terror, forced collectivization) or with the Gulag, further frustrated the conception of this memory. Yet a literary “response” to the genocide of Jews did indeed exist, it is here analyzed by periodizing and studying in each case the constraints and prohibitions that weighted on and thwarted most of them from surfacing inthe Soviet Union. A collection of texts from archives is here revealed, which should shift our way of thinking about testimony, until now focused on the western experience of extermination camps and its survivors

Abstract:
We tested two approaches of spatial observation in order to accomplish this goal: an aerial approach by stereophotogrammetry from unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) images, and a terrestrial approach by ground laser scanner. For the aerial approach an adequate combination of ground preparation, systematic errors compensation (resulting from image acquisition) and an image matching strategy enabled us to obtain a drone DTM with resolution, accuracy, and hydrologic coherence within the limit of the data (average image ground resolution 3 cm). In regard to the terrestrial approach, results of LiDAR measurement test on different geometric surfaces show that the noise is of 1 cm from a measure distance of 30 m. The application of a simple average filter in a regular grid of 1 cm makes it possible to reduce the noise and also to recreate geometric forms of more than 3 cm large. The “advantage-constraints” ratio between these two approaches shows us that the aerial approach produces DTM with better extent and continuity, while the terrestrial approach produces more precise and detailed DTM. These results reveal the enormous potential of drone images for the development of inexpensive DTM. In addition, ground LiDAR arises as an interesting topographic surveying system for the monitoring of elementary processes of gully erosion, allowing for very detailed measurements in space and time

Abstract:
Sub-cultural languages in South Africa – languages which do not enjoy official status amongst other qualities – have not received much attention academically. Existing theories of maintenance and shift accommodate mainstream languages in their role and function within dominant society. However the sub-cultural languages, in which Fanagalo will later be categorised, and their role and function in society are unclear. This may be the result of the inefficiency of current theories of maintenance and shift to explain the functionality of sub-cultural languages and the process they undergo leading to either maintenance or shift. Furthermore, failure to recognise the role and function of such sub-cultural languages may be attributed to their non-official status as they are not officially supported by language policies. The purpose of this study is therefore to understand the process of maintenance or shift a sub-cultural language undergoes. This process is accommodated by developing a theoretical model related to maintenance or shift for sub-cultural languages. This model, specifically based on Fanagalo, will expand on the boundaries set in existing theoretical models of maintenance and shift in order to accommodate sub-cultural language. It is important to stress that the period during which the data was collected on site at Mine X in Rustenburg, is volatile in nature. The unrest in the social context concerning the mine workers themselves during the period in which this data was gathered alludes to the value of the data and provides a unique insight not achievable under non-adverse circumstances. The unrest began in 2012 during which a “strike over pay ha(d) escalated into alleged turf war between unions” (Smith & Macalister, 2012) in Marikana, Rustenburg where more than thirty people were killed on the 17th of August, 2012. A year later, an agreement between Amcu (Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union) and Lonmin was signed which, according to Mathunjwa, president of Amcu, was quoted as saying, ‘This shows that the victims did not die in vain and we pledge to continue with their fight for a living wage” (Mathunjwa, 2013, quoted by Steyn, 2013). This pledge was upheld as on 28 August, 2013, Amcu was, “asking for increases as high as 150%, and Solidarity are still engaging” (Nicolson, 2013). As the interviews as part of the data collection process for this study were conducted on 14 August 2013, the value of the data should not go unrecognised.<br>MA (English), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Amid political quarrels within Florence, which Dante considered his paradise, the poet was exiled and through his writing roamed the Italian courts in search of a paradise in this life. In this work, we try to demonstrate how this process hapened, either by the political disputes in which Dante became involved, as well as in his defense to the Empire and oposition to the Papacy. Brassier, Vanessa. Paris 7, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA070048.

Full text
Abstract:
This work aims to elevate the notion of ravage, as introduced by Lacan in characterising the nature of the bond between a daughter and her mother, to the status of psychoanalytical concept. The argument endeavours to show that ravage is less the consequence of a pathological bad mother than a structural fact inscribed in each young woman's blueprint. Ravage is to be found in the young woman's difficulty, if not impossibility, in assuming a subjective feminine position due to the fantastical persistence of the bond with the mother, from whom she expects extra subsistence. Firstly, based on Freud's writings about female sexuality, we will locale the core of ravage within the heart of the pre-oedipal maternal bond and then, with Lacan, link ravage to the distinctiveness of female jouissance. Having laid down these theoretical markers, we will explore the hysterical specificity of the maternal bond by making the hypothesis that there is a structural affinity between maternal ravage and female hysteria. Secondly, we will proceed to reread the Dora case through the lens of maternal ravage in order to put this concept to a clinical test. Lastly, we will explore the issue of pinpointing ravage and its possible "treatment" within the healing of hysterical women. As a conclusion, we will ask ourselves if it is possible to consider, in analysis, breaking through ravage, which brings up an ethical question: how must the analyst adjust and orient his treatment of women " who are victims of maternal ravage?

Abstract:
Love leads to devastation when it asks more identity, more being. The aim of this work is to dismantle the logic of devastation by examining its aspects in particular, in the psychopathological field of the adolescence. More than that, it wants to highlight that devastation is a structural fact related to a real clinic that belongs to the feminine. Nourished by the passions of the being, the devastation is related to the impossible subjectivation of the body of pleasure of the one who consideres herself as a woman through language although not defined by phallocentric logic. Devastation leads to hainamoration, this zone of the analytical experiment that Jacques Lacan highlighted. Hatred as a fundamental passion is questioned here in its statute to be rehabilitated in a contemporary social link which gets down to evacuate the dimension of lack and otherness whereas the body, which is the place of the Other par excellence, pays the price of it. The hatred of the feminine, the hatred of the Other in itself; whether it applies to the mother, the lover, the being or to God, hatred is the hatred of the manque-à-être, the hatred of everybody’s extime part. Treating devastation leads to an ethics of the act, adequate to this moterialisme of the unconscious which makes words and bodies resound, for a subject to be able to get used to his being

Abstract:
This thesis revolves around social dance movements in the form of raving and clubbing in Berlin, and how this performative scene is affected by social distancing measures due to the current situation of Covid-19. As an important moment in history, online body performances and virtual spaces aim to complement and substitute social experiences in physical environments. The field of study relating digital technology to club cultures is timely, as virtual raving is changing social bodies’ interactions. Life has gone online for the sake of upholding socialization, as people find themselves in isolation – in a hybrid experience of the digital and material. To assess these changes in social life, this thesis uses an auto ethnographical case study on virtual raving and interviews with rave participants, and deploys Affordance Theory. The affordances accounted for are those of ‘settings’, ‘socialization’, ‘entertainment’, and ‘mobility’. The analysis demonstrates the possibilities and problems of transferring the meditative and social bodily experiences associated with raving, to virtual environments. The resulting discussion addresses issues of global accessibility, virtual raves, and what these mean for a techno raving sub culture, and the people who participate in it.

Abstract:
Because of its importance as a source of sediment and its capacity to change the water and the connectivity of sediments during intense rainfall, particularly in the cultivated lands, the gullies have need to be better understood for being able to manage them and mitigate its effects. The Pays de Thelle and Artois are the two regions of the Parisian Basin in which the largest number of ravines is concentrated ; however the studies about the processes of gullies and the attempts of modeling remain rare. Using the morphometric analysis and the study of the preserved deposits in the downstream of the incisions, the research aims to determine which are the variables of the controlling system such incisions, and to reconstruct the morphogenesis stages of these incisions and the risks they represent today. Ravines are occurring where the area draining and the slope are sufficient to make concentrated flow that can erode, they are often found at the level of slope's breakdown. The measurement of the volumes which have been eroded and accumulated shows that the erosion wins largely on the depot. The ravines have recorded several phases of incision in which the importance is explained by the conjunction of exceptional rainfall, strong anthropogenic pressures (land clearing and cultivation) and tectonic phenomena (uprising slow anticlinal axes of Bray and Artois). These ravines are fluvial forms, but the Neotectonic plays an essential role in the Pays de Thelle, whereas it is rather the karst phenomena which prevail in Artois. The recent afforestation of ravines slows the incision, but does not prevent the regressive erosion to roll back the heads of gullies and the risks of floods and mudslides muddy still threaten the villages located immediately downstream of these ravines

Reeves, Barry. "Report to the dancefloor : journeys by experience and writing into raving and anthropology." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9949.

Abstract:
This work is an ethnography about raving. As such, it is based on the author's actual, inter-subjective and historical experience of that contemporary international social phenomenon in Britain and in Goa (India) during the late 1980s and 1990s. It is written from the position of an involved, participating subject over time. This ethnographic approach and the emphasis placed upon subjective experience, history and knowledge 'from within' throughout the work is aimed, critically speaking, at tendencies within contemporary forms of anthropology which favour academic introspection, inter-textuality, textual notions concerning social life and overinterpretation. This commitment to ethnography is also used in the final section of the work, within a critical-historical appreciation of the discipline, to argue for a re-statement of Malinowski's radical 'science' of ethnography in the face of a routinisation of 'science' as a legitimating discourse within the discipline during the twentieth century. Furthermore, the ethnographic approach is also set out, in a way which attempts to make the work relevant not only to practitioners of anthropology, as a way of producing public knowledge and accounts of social life which are very different, ethically and politically, from those produced within other public practices and contexts, such as by the media and government agencies. Representations and accounts produced by such public agencies are situated and questioned in the work through attaching them, as loaded products, to Michel Foucault's political notion of modern 'governmentality ' Within such a politicised account of representation, the author has used long-established, humanist notions surrounding the practice of ethnography, regarding participation and empathy, in order to produce accounts of raving as a human social practice. These humanised and politicised accounts of the phenomenon are offered as a contrast to the predominating public accounts of the practice, produced through distanced and disinterested discourses, which mainly focus upon its ability to animate certain powerful social categories and forms of exclusion, such as 'the criminal' and 'the addict', and socio-political discourses, such as that on 'drugs' and 'the war against drugs'. This contrast, and the opposition and demand for human tolerance it expresses, forms part of a wider project within the work which resists dehumanisation; that is, the treatment of human beings and their practices in terms of self-serving discourses (monologues) as opposed to the humanising and politicising effects of experience, interaction and empathy/understanding (dialogue). Within this general framework surrounding the politics and ethics of representation, other areas which are explored are the position/role of the anthropologist and the use of subjectivity within the research process, the use of creative writing as a source of humanised ethnographic knowledge about diverse social worlds, and an exploration into the possible uses and limits of academic theorisation.

Abstract:
Denna uppsats undersöker ravekulturens nuvarande tillstånd i Stockholm.

Cory, Emily Faun. "Rule Governance in an African White-necked Raven (Corvus albicollis)." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/242401.

Abstract:
Rule governance is critical to human society. However, could rule governance be found in non-human animals? A six year old, female, African white-necked raven (Covrus albicollis) named Shade correctly followed informal verbal commands to retrieve specified objects in the past. This ability was tested using two different methods. Both methods involved the researcher verbally asking the bird to retrieve one object out of two either from the same room or an adjacent room. While initial results were not significantly different than chance, review of trial recordings revealed that it is possible to predict when the bird will retrieve an incorrect object based solely on specific behaviors, termed inattentive or uninterested. Trials marked as inattentive by observers were significantly more likely to be incorrect than correct. This indicates that the bird was capable of retrieving the correct object, but that she also occasionally, intentionally retrieved the incorrect object.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines 'sovereignty' as not only a theoretical abstraction of power relations within finite territories, but also as a very alive practice, a daily defense of inherent rights based on Indigenous philosophical notions of power and space. I examine the perspectives of Indigenous practitioners who either through their conversations and/or life ways cultivate an original conception of sovereignty, specifically the governance of the Gwich'in people, a nation of 15 villages in the Arctic Circle. As an Indigenous nation living within legal structures of a settler state, they offer an alternative understanding of collective political power, rooted outside the western European paradigm but simultaneously confronting those ambits. I argue that rather than an alternative narrative of resistance towards secession or segregation, the Gwich'in Nation provide a viable, pro-active and realized form of co-existent sovereignty. This sovereignty is a form of political collective identity and a relationship with the environment and non-human actors, as well as other governments, that is productive, creative and focused as much on future generations as drawing from tradition.

____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>The present dissertation is informed by ideas and concepts related to Cultural History, such as identity, representation, and memory; and is dedicated to analyzing Emperor Justianian’s policy in using images, with the purpose of restoring the Roman Empire in the 6th Century dressed in new clothing, that is, as a Christian Roman Empire. Justinian’s proposal implied in creating an identity to affirm the romanitas. In northern Italy Ravenna, this effort is expressed against the arianism ostrogoth, specially in redesigning the post-classical city as a way of adjusting it to the new imperial model. The city’s monuments define the new Empire, by giving new meaning to sanctuaries and images, to be more than mere decoration, but to represent liturgy itself and Justinian’s power in themselves. In this paper, I refer to three of these: Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, San Vitale and the Arian Baptistry.
