Abstract:
The raw material is a major component in an industry, where raw materials become afundamental requirement in the production process. That requires a careful inventory planningsystem in the processing of raw materials production. If adequate supplies of raw materials, theproduction continues to run smoothly. Material Requirement Planning (MRP) is a method forcontrolling the raw material inventory planning. Where this method is designed specifically forthe production of corrugated demand situation. With this method, the researchers conducted astudy of HD plastic packaging raw material inventories at a food company, in which the process ofcollecting data with historical data recording system usage reports monthly HD plastic. The purpose of this study was to determine inventory levels and determine strategies forcontrolling and planning of HD plastic packaging materials. By making MPS for 3 months, thenthe obtained forecasting production from December 2012 s/d in February 2013. The doughproduction amount of demand Adonan 32.543batch and demand of Cream 95.938batch.With the number of such requests, the need for plastic packaging materials as much HD plasticshort 24zak as same 7221.45Kg, equivalent to as much as 604.79Kg weekly demand. For HDplastic long needs 19zak as same 5610.86kg, equivalent to 467.57Kg weekly demand. By usingthe MRP method can determine the company's raw material procurement strategy for the next 3months. Thus the MRP method can be applied in the raw material requirement planning.

PT.

The development of the business world is currently experiencing a very rapid growth rate. Planning for the proper procurement of materials will be able to facilitate the company's production activities. Production process activities in companies often experience problems such as inaccurate production, which is caused by delays in the arrival of raw materials, and damage to raw materials due to too long storing in warehouses. This study aims to plan future needs with the Material Requirement Planning (MRP) approach by doing forecasting, making the Master Production Schedule (MPS), Material Requirement Planning (MRP) and conducting a cost analysis of the five methods used. The results of this study are forecasting product demand will be used linear regression method, and effective material requirements planning method with the lowest cost is to use the Lot For Lot (LFL) method of $ 164.48. The application of the Lot For Lot method can reduce costs by 90.06% compared to the Fixed Period Requirements (FPR) method used by the company.

Abstract:
PT. XYZ is a pharmaceutical company that produces Amoxicillin. In managing its inventory, PT XYZ has not done a good plan to determine the size of raw material orders. The existence of these problems, a study was conducted with the aim of determining Amoxicillin raw material inventory planning to eliminate the accumulation of raw materials at future. The initial stage is forecasting using three methods, namely Linear Regression, Exponential Smoothing and Moving Average. Of the three forecasting methods, the Linear Regression method provides the smallest error accuracy. The chosen method of forecasting must be carried out in advance of verification test (Moving Range) to be used as a basis for planning future raw material requirements. Furthermore, calculations are carried out using the MRP method to determine the size of the order lot for each raw material and reduce the cost of saving. The lot size technique used includes Lot for Lot (LFL), Economic Order Quantity (EOQ), and Fixed Period Requirement (FPR). Of the three lot size techniques used, the LFL method provides the lowest total cost of inventory.

The thesis explores inventory management principles in the context of a storage capacity constrained warehouse. Amgen Inc. is building a new manufacturing facility in Singapore. Due to internal raw material warehouse capacity constraints, Amgen is evaluating the use of a 3rd Party Logistics (3PL) for additional warehousing space. The goal of this project is to recommend a raw material inventory strategy to reduce inventory levels and a 3PL operation guideline to ensure the availability of storage space and to minimize the transfers of raw material between Amgen and the 3PL. The project developed four inventory management methodologies to reduce raw material inventory in the context of a warehouse with a capacity constraint: I. Batch size optimization with an extension of the economic order quantity (EOQ) that adjusts batch size based on available warehouse space. 2. Safety stock reduction with the removal of demand variability by fixing the production schedule for 6 months. This results in a 10% inventory reduction by value and an 18% reduction in warehouse space usage. 3. Vendor managed inventory (VMI) with suppliers in Singapore to reduce inventory by 5%. 4. Maintaining commonality of disposable raw materials at 75% for new products that use the Manufacturing of the Future (MoF) platform to mitigate a 46% increase in room temperature warehouse space. As Amgen starts to use a 3PL, we recommend: 1. Use the 3PL in series with Amgen's warehouse to minimize raw material transfers. 2. Use the created warehouse model for 3PL operation guidelines. The model calculates the raw material requirements for a given production plan and recommends how to route the raw material and computes the space required for Amgen and the 3PL. 3. Use recommended key performance indicators to ensure data input into the warehouse model is accurate for correctly optimized results.

Abstract:

A key process step in sawmills is the sawing of logs into wood, using various sawing patterns. A certain amount of waste always results when sawing, but by using the right sawing pattern for each individual log this waste can be minimized. One way to address this is to presort the incoming logs into a number of sawing classes, where all of these collect logs with similar properties. Raw material control at sawmills involves choosing the patterns to be used on each class, the share of each class to be sawn with the various patterns and also deciding the way logs are assigned to the sawing classes.

In this work an optimization tool is constructed that addresses the problem of optimizing the raw material control with respect to the sales value of the manufactured products. The problem is divided into two sub-problems where linear programming can be used for one of these sub-problems with purpose to optimize the choices of sawing patterns given a set of classes. Linear programming can be used because the unit price of sawn goods is assumed to be constant with respect to the volume produced. The second sub-problem is to optimize the sorting of logs and in order to do this four different local search algorithms are implemented and evaluated.

Through an user and database interface the sawmill can access sawlog data, simulated product outcomes and constraints for product volumes. In addition to optimization of the raw material control the optimization tool can help the user to create well-founded quotations whenever new orders arrive or the anticipated raw material distribution changes.

The optimization tool always manages to find the optimal choice of sawing patterns and shares for a set of sawing classes given the existence of at least one choice that fulfills the constraints for manufactured product volumes. Tests show however, that this computational step requires too much time, but it can probably be streamlined enough to be used in practice. The best local search algorithm serves satisfactory in tests, but needs more development in order to be labeled as finished. Foremost by enabling the algorithm to find a solution even if the sawmill's default sawing classes can not fulfill the product volume constraints. The test data used when evaluating the algorithms come from a real sawmill, but due to shortcomings in the data no conclusions about increased profit for the sawmill can be drawn.

The pharmaceutical production, as well as the manufactured products production, requires raw materials, which initially need an effective planning and then an efficient control to guarantee that the final product will be deliver in the required conditions. Failure to inputs of the acquisition process can result negatively on the entire commodity chain. Farmanguinhos, as Brazilian official pharmaceutical laboratories (LFO), should follow the Brazilian law no. 8666 of June 21, 1993, that treats about acquisition process, which makes the activity more complex and turn planning and production control complex too. Thus, this study objective to analyze Farmanguinhos supply chain system the Farmanguinhos and propose improvements in the planning and control of raw materials. It was conducted a descriptive study, having as a methodological strategy a case study of the Farmanguinhos. Calculations were make between theoretical and actual times for each stage of the antiretroviral production process at the LFO in question. In addition, information’s were show regarding the experiences of other LFO and finally improvement proposals were make. According to customer service, Farmanguinhos has not had good performance, only 24% of requests were delivery on time. Has a total average service time in the years 2010-2014 of 395 actual days against an expectation of the main customer, the Ministry of Health, of 157 days. The raw material supply correspond to 88% of the total time and, if we concentrate only the in request and in acquisition this correspond to 72% of the total time. At first glance, the rigid law of public service seems to be the longest delay factor in the productive system Farmanguinhos. The law prohibits the choice of suppliers and exclusive contracts for long periods unless in exceptional condition. Being against the leading companies in the private market that hires their supply chain with companies of your choice and being exclusive. The proposal try to reduce the leading time passes the qualification of suppliers and price record of accomplishment to purchase materials.

Abstract:
The Study aims to evaluate what kind of systems buyers of raw materials use for handling the flow of information in their supply chain of raw materials. Due to the complexity of the topic, the Study is only examining the continuous exchange of information between suppliers and buyers of raw materials. The purpose of the Study is to provide recommendations to Boliden on which system is suitable for implementation at the company. The Study’s results were achieved by collecting both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through interviews with raw materials buyers and trade organisations. A total of fifteen interviews were conducted in the Study. The secondary data was collected through a literature study. The results of the Study indicate that there exists four different solutions for managing the flow of information in a supply chain of raw materials. The most common solution among buyers of raw materials is to use the so-called “traditional” systems, i.e. e-mail, telephone and physical meetings. The second most common solution is to use an external information handling system provided by a trade organisation. The third most common solution is to use a commercial information handling system, i.e. a system provided by a commercial provider. Lastly, the least common solution is to develop an information handling system on its own, i.e. a proprietary information handling system. The conclusion of the Study is that Boliden should use two information handling system simultaneously, i.e. an external information handling system and the traditional information handling systems. However, Boliden should also look into the option of developing a proprietary information handling system.

Abstract:
In December 1945 the "L'Approdo" transmissions were launched at the RAI headquarters in Florence. The radio programme, one of the most important in Italy at the time, went on the air up to 1977, being accompanied from 1952 by a magazine and from 1963 to 1972 by a television programme. The three parallel cultural "enterprises" boasted an impressive number of important collaborators, gravitating around the decisive figure of Carlo Betocchi as leader and organiser. Nevertheless, despite its significance, even the adventure of "L'Approdo" was destined to die. When the transmissions and the publication of the magazine ceased, an entire cultural élite had to come to terms not only with the objective difficulties, but with a crisis of trust and of commitment in the face of what were now irreversible changes in the country. Yet – precisely because "L'Approdo" had battled for an approach that was destined to become minority with the triumph of the new media society – the retrieval of its history and the reconstruction through voices, pages and images of one of the first examples of encounter and mediation between culture and communication appears particularly significant. The methods and the emphatic planning of the entire experience emerge clearly from the first issue of the magazine, produced here in anastatic reprint, and above all from the enclosed CD-Rom which proposes, along with the tables of contents of "L'Approdo", the files and records of the entire correspondence (over 20,000 unpublished pieces) and details of the surviving scripts of the transmissions… In short, we finally have at our disposal material that enables us to reconstruct – through the traces of a programme and a magazine and of the intellectuals who collaborated on them – thirty years of culture and utopia, of compromise and enthusiasm, clustered around the birth, growth and death of an articulated project of "cultural policy".

Abstract:
AbstractAfrica’s urban morphology is expected to develop at a steady rate between 2020 and 2050. Population growth, rising urbanization rates, growing energy consumption, and industrialization are only a few of the reasons causing these changes. Likewise, waste production is projected to rise from 125 million tons in 2012 to 244 million tons annually by 2025. Around 60.0% and 80.0% of African waste is made up of organic material, which is a viable methane source. Fly tipping, free disposal, landfilling, and incineration have been used as a large-scale waste treatment system in most African cities. However, with the anticipated morphological changes, these solutions are no longer viable in the future due to lack of airspace, availability of urban land for new landfill sites, and concerns over carbon emissions. This chapter discusses the potential for improved adoption of material recycling facilities (MRF) in urban environments as an incentive to support waste diversion from landfills, decentralize waste separation activities, and increase the transformation of waste materials into valuable raw materials. A case study is discussed for Ethiopia, Ghana, and South Africa with the goal of explaining current processes, urban planning initiatives required for greater implementation, and how they can be interpreted as adaptation initiatives.

Abstract:
This paper delves into the evaluation of an operation planning for a realistic multi-stage, single-product Kanban managed production system with time varying production rates and finished goods demands. The study pursued is to dynamically and systematically manipulate the production rate of each stage and the raw material orders at the first stage which are corresponding to the minimum integrated inventory costs incurred due to raw materials, finished products and work-in-process (WIP) inventories under a varying demand of finished product. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed operation planning methodology for a multistage Kanban managed production and supply chain system.

Abstract:
Abstract Generating the Numerical Control (NC) tool path for machining a complex shaped component is highly dependent on the proficiency of a Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programmer in manufacturing field, although the CAM systems now are highly integrated. A Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) system, which can automatically extract the manufacturing features from the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model and generate the machining process planning, has been expected for a long time. In this research, a graph-based CAPP system was proposed. It mainly includes four modules, data conversion module, feature classification module, feature combination module and process planning module. The first two modules claim a graph-based feature recognition method, output the recognized manufacturing features which are classified into four classes and defined as specific types. The feature combination module generates different paths to combine manufacturing features from a goal model into raw material shape by four kinds of combination methods corresponding to the four classes. Finally, the process planning module will give a cost estimation of all those paths with the consideration of manufacturing resources and time cost. A relatively optimized machining method and machining sequence will be generated as the output of this proposed system.

Full text
Abstract:
This research studies a make-to-order production planning in a canned pineapple industry. Pineapple is a seasonal perishable fruit. Thus, the cost of fresh pineapple which is the main raw material in canned pineapple is inexpensive during its season. The color of the pineapple also determines the price of the canned pineapple. However, the availability of different colors (called “choice” and “standard”) is dependent. Specifically, if the ratio of the choice color is more, the ratio of the other color is less. There are several costs involve such as fresh pineapple cost, can cost, sugar cost, water cost, labor cost, energy cost, and inventory cost. The problem is formulated as a mathematical model to maximize the total profit over four-months planning horizon. Two supply uncertainty cases are tested which are low and high ratios of the choice color. The results show that the profit depends on available color ratios of the pineapple. The production planning is best if it matches with the availability of the color ratios. In certain months, some fresh pineapple purchased exceed the need of the production because of the dependency of the two colors. The inventory holding cost also influences the production decision—whether to produce the canned pineapple in earlier months or it is better to produce only the canned pineapple when it is needed to serve the customer orders.

Abstract:
Sustainable product design plans the entire life cycle of a product from its raw material selection, conceptual and structural formation, manufacturing processing, and usage to its end-of-life, reuse, and recycle. The product design needs the sustainable knowledge and proper tools. Current computer-aided design systems are insufficient to represent complex relationships of product functions, structures and life cycle options. It is required for design tools to support product life cycle planning with multi-objective optimal solutions. In this paper, our experience in design of a wheelchair is used as an example to discuss the need of design tools. The aim is to define ideal tools for design of sustainable products.

Abstract:
In the last twenty years, the exploitation of non-renewable resources and the effects of their applications on environment and human health were considered central topics in political and scientific debate on European and worldwide scale. This kind of resources have been used in different sectors, as energy systems, technological research, but also in private/public buildings and production of consumer goods, involving significantly domestic and ordinary life of every human being. Studies about the effect of this exploitation carried out discouraging results, in terms of climate changes and energy sustenance; this determined a progressive approach process to a new concept of development, able to couple the qualitative standard of modern life with the respect of planet and its inhabitants. Starting from this reflection, scientific community moved towards research on alternative resources and developed a new way to conceive planning process and technical innovations, in order to exploit renewable energies and recycled materials, promote energy savings and reduce environmental pollution. In this context the present paper aims at evaluating benefits relating to different solutions of thermal insulation in building envelope. In fact a high grade of insulation ensures better comfort conditions in inner spaces, reducing energy consumptions due to heating and cooling conditioning. The paper presents the results of a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the reflective foil ISOLIVING, conceived and produced by an Italian company. The Life Cycle Assessment methodology allows to consider all stages of the life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to the product’s disposal, in an optics “from cradle to grave.” In particular, the study takes into account the production phase of the reflective foil ISOLIVING, the installation phase, the transport of all components to the production site and also the end of life scenario of the material. The possibility to collect many detailed information about the production phase adds value to the study. The analysis is carried out according to UNI EN ISO 14040 and UNI EN ISO 14044, which regulate the LCA procedure. The LCA modeling was performed using SimaPro software application. The results of the analysis allow to make an important comparison concerning the environmental performances, between the reflective foil ISOLIVING and other types of insulating materials.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents how laser milling can replace conventional milling for producing selected features in thin-walled structures of space instrument parts. Example parts are shown. In the final stages of the manufacturing process the produced thin-walled structures require special attention to avoid vibration, unwanted deformation and even catastrophic destruction of the part. This requires careful planning of machining operations and fixture design which in turn can take considerable time. Laser milling is a slow material removal process. It is generally used only for finishing features that normal chip cutting tools cannot reach. However, in the case of the part having thin-walled structures, laser milling has the extra benefit of causing practically no deflection or vibration due to machining forces and consequently it requires minimal fixturing. Generally the laser beam should mill the material in the direction of its smallest depth to minimize recast and form errors that accumulate layer by layer. It is also possible to mill out solid chunks of material without fear of catastrophic collisions, unlike in chip cutting. This can reduce the milled volume thus speeding up the process considerably. Laser milling has special requirements with regard to the depth-width ratio of cavities, sidewall verticalness, and geometrical form of the raw stock. One must also consider where the laser beam hits after perforating the desired surface. In many cases combining laser milling with traditional machining is the fastest way to produce one-of-a-kind parts.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to determine and compare the environmental impacts of two toasters: standard and eco-friendly. The most rapidly growing sector for the e-waste world comes from Electronic household products. More than 2 million tons of electronic products are disposed off as solid waste to landfills in the US alone. The demand for energy supplies has been rapidly increasing in the past decade. Strict legislative measures should be enforced to protect the environment by making industries collect back the manufactured products at the End-of-Life (EOL) from the users and recycle the products. If these necessary steps are not taken, then these e-wastes will impose serious threat to society and the environment. In order to re-design environmentally friendly products and facilitate sustainable take-back planning, current products need to be evaluated for their environmental impacts. One of the widely used methodologies to assess the environmental impacts of a product is called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA is a cradle to grave approach for assessing the environmental impacts of a product. The cradle to grave approach includes raw material phase, manufacturing and assembly phase, use phase, recovery phase and disposal phase. The system boundary for LCA presented in this paper includes material phase, manufacturing phase, use-phase and disposal phase. The functional unit for the LCA is entire life of the toaster which is one year based on manufacturer’s warranty which also includes the rate of usage. The environmental impacts from the two toasters as presented in this paper include eutrophication, acidification, energy-use and global warming. The use phase energy impact is experimentally determined.
