Abstract:

This research extends Hasan Fathy’s (1986) principle of vernacular architecture by focusing on the Rawshan through an investigation of two criteria: aesthetics and energy efficiency. The paper discusses the views of both the Saudi public and key decision-makers on reviving vernacular architecture in the context of Saudi Arabia’s rapidly developing economy, characterized by relatively high rates of energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This research explores (a) the interaction in domestic buildings of Saudi occupants with their windows, and how these are perceived as an interface with the external environment; (b) awareness and knowledge of the use of shading elements (such as Rawshans) to reduce the use of artificial lighting while maintaining indoor privacy; (c) Saudi awareness of, and familiarity with, the Rawshan as a vernacular element and a secular architectural tradition; and (d) Saudi views on the revival of traditional architectural elements with a focus on the Rawshan. An online survey (n = 812) was conducted across Saudi Arabia complemented by interviews with expert decision-makers (n = 23) to (a) assess criteria such as privacy, aesthetics, daylight, ventilation, and energy consumption in Saudi residences and (b) investigate the level of acceptance of an optimized retrofitted Rawshan design.

His work in the Fisheries Laboratory of the University of Saskatchewan between 1948 and 1960 is of particular interest. Uno de los campos en los que la ligazón entre género y juventud resulta notoria es el de la educación universitaria. Considerando previamente lo ocurrido a nivel latinoamericano, se destacan las vidas de las primeras médicas argentinas (Cecilia Grierson, Elvira Rawson Guiñazú, Adelma Gossweiler, Francisca Montaut y María Beljover) quienes, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y en la primera del siglo XX, se sobrepusieron a obstáculos para su matriculación, cursado y egreso en las Facultades de Medicina así como para su condicionada práctica médica, excediendo este quehacer y bregando en favor de varios derechos femeninos. Su evocación adquiere actuales implicancias.<br /><br />University education is a field exhibiting a clear link between gender and youth. As concern former Latin American experiences, the first Argentinean medical women (Cecilia Grierson, Elvira Rawson Guiñazú, Adelma Gossweiler, Francisca Montaut and María Beljover) should be considered. During a period running from the second half of the XIX century to the first half of the XX century, they managed to overcome drawbacks dealing with matriculation, their study and qualification in medical schools as well as with their conditioned medical practice. They also struggled for many feminine rights. Their evocation acquires current implications.<br /><br />

Effect of Storage Duration and Temperature on Sets Loss and Bolting of OnionOnion sets of two cultivars - Rawska and Jetset F1were calibrated into three grades depending on the diameter of onion (11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 mm). From October to March, sets were kept in the following conditions: I - 24 weeks at 0-1°C, II - 15 weeks at 0-1°C, then 9 weeks at 18-20°C, III - 11 weeks at 0-1°C, then 13 weeks at 18-20°C, IV - 24 weeks at 18-20°C. The storage loss caused by complete drying up, sprouting into leaves and occurrence of disease symptoms were determined. The sets left over after evaluation of storage loss were planted in the field in order to determine bolting of onion. Cold storage (0-1°C) for 24 weeks reduced loss but stimulated bolting. In the case of Jetset F1, warm storage (18-20°C) for the last 9 weeks of the 24 weeks' experimental storage period practically eliminated bolting. The sets of Rawska required longer exposures of 18-20°C at the end of storage for suppressing of inflorescence development than Jetset F1. The smaller onion sets were kept the shorter the duration of warm storage required to reduce bolting. The longer onion sets were stored at 18-20°C the greater storage loss were noted.

Abstract:

The present paper focuses on Amartia Sen and an aspect of his reflection on the Rawslian theory of justice, especially about the justification of substantive and social rights and more particularly those that demand the discussion about the character and nature of the right to private appropriation of social effort. Thus, tehe focuse is understand an aspect of Amartia Sen's reflection exposed in the 3rd chapter of 'Development as freedom', in which Sen contrast the formulation of Rawls' theory of justice, regarding the priority that the author grants the formal element of freedom to the detriment of its materialization and concretization. In the name of those emerges a clear theoretical (and practical) conflict with the demands for the realization of certain rights, resulting in a dichotomy between liberties (as formal, procedural or negative freedoms) vis-a-vis the liberal-individualist tradition and within which they are opposed freedoms (understood in the context of the debate put there as concrete, material or substantive freedoms). So, we have an antinomy will be confronted with the Hart’s 'Essays in Jurisprudence and philosophy', in the sense of pointing out that a problem with Rawls' formulation is that he does not understand it necessary to reconcile the admission of private property as freedom with the general principle of maximum ‘equal freedom’. So want to ask is whether the model proposed by Sen tackles this issue better and more adequately, which implies a hypothetical framework by which, by establishing a small number of basic freedoms, the Rawslian formulation does nothing more than treat property rights as mere formal guarantee of those who have it and to the detriment of all other components of the social body. It is, therefore, as to the method, of research centered on bibliographic review.

Resumen Este artículo analiza cómo el discurso médico incorpora una serie de reflexiones sobre las conductas morales en Buenos Aires en la primera parte del siglo XIX. A través del estudio de tres textos, cuyos autores son los médicos Diego Alcorta, Guillermo Rawson y Francisco Javier Muñiz se identifican una serie de registros argumentales que resaltan el funcionamiento de los órganos, la cuestión de la herencia y la gravitación del clima en función de reflexionar sobre la moralidad de los individuos y las poblaciones. Este fenómeno de transferencia de saberes se debe a la presencia de la tradición médica francesa sumándose a factores locales derivados del intenso proceso de politización de la sociedad bajo el segundo gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas.

Abstract:

The Rawshani movement is the first well-documented example of supra-tribal unification and subsequent successful integration of the movement’s leaders into the alien state structures. But by no means is it an isolated phenomenon in Pashtun history. Similar pattern of religion-motivated supra-tribal unification, which should be considered as a product of historical relationships of power, remerged inter alia during more recent crises in the Afghan history. Due to the volatile nature of the Afghan state fluctuating between tribalism and ethnic pluralistic participation, military and Islamic dimensions have always been of paramount importance for state-community relations where religion, tribalism and ethnicity were often the means of state’s control of social resistance and its vehicles. In the time of crises, religion-inspired militia-type independent military formations were able to challenge the might of the state and occasionally even initiate the incipient state formation opposed to the communal institutions and those of the old regime. When this community-based military activity went beyond the scope of traditional annual cycle of violence it often acquired a supra-tribal or ethnic and regional dimension, which was legitimised by the Islamic ideology and institutions. This article offers some directions towards making a calibration tool or even identifying a pattern that may be used as an epistemological paradigm that may provide a sense of orientation and bearing in the intricacies of a complex historical interaction between Pashtun Islam, tribes and state.

Abstract:

A paleolimnological study of lake-level changes in Lake 239 (Rawson Lake), a headwater lake in the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario, indicates large fluctuations have occurred over the Holocene. Analyses are based on diatoms, the proportion of chrysophyte scales to diatoms and organic matter content from near-shore sediment cores. Quantitative estimates of lake level are based on a diatom-inferred depth model that was developed from surficial sediments collected along several transects in Lake 239. Declines of ∼ 1–3 m occurred during the late Holocene, whereas declines of at least 8 m occurred during the more arid mid-Holocene. These results provide the first substantive evidence of large declines in lake level in northwestern Ontario during the mid-Holocene. Conditions during the mid-Holocene may provide a partial view of future conditions under increasing global temperatures.

O texto narrativo permeia a experiência humana, pois se trata de um texto de uso frequente. No entanto, compreender esse tipo de texto não é uma tarefa simples, uma vez que a compreensão perpassa diferentes níveis, como propõe o Modelo de Processamento Textual, de Kintsch; Van Dijk (1978, 1983), Van Dijk (1992, 2010), Kintsch (1998), Kintsch; Rawson (2013). Sob o prisma da Neurolinguística, trazemos os seguintes questionamentos: como se dá a compreensão do texto narrativo e como os hemisférios cerebrais processam esse tipo de texto? O que estudos experimentais com neuroimagem nos dizem a esse respeito? Quais áreas cerebrais estão imbricadas no processamento da narrativa? A fim de discutir essas questões com base na literatura e oferecer aporte teórico a pesquisas na área, trazemos contribuições da Linguística e da Neurociência sobre a forma como os hemisférios cerebrais cooperam para a representação do texto narrativo.

Abstract:

The work presents the design process of vibration isolation for a building subjected to the influence of railway vibrations. This process is illustrated on the example of the railway control building in Biała Rawska, realized within the framework of the investment whose the general contractor was PORR Poland Construction S.A. Measurements of railway vibrations at the site of the planned building were made. The building calculation model was performed and then the vibration isolation parameters of the building were calculated based on the simulation calculations of this model. The purpose of the described design work was to limit the impact of vibration on the people and the equipment in the computer server room located in this building. The original design of the rail track vibration insulation was replaced by the building vibration project. Abstract:

The reasons for the historian Samuel Rawson Gardiner's departure from the Catholic Apostolic Church in the mid-1860s are speculated upon but not generally known. This essay makes use of letters, hitherto in family hands and unknown to researchers, from Gardiner and his wife Isabella to her brother Martin Irving in order to trace the growth of Gardiner's doubts and his alienation from the Catholic Apostolic Church. In particular, the letters show how Gardiner felt the Church was mishandling the intellectual challenges exercising contemporary churchmen. The aim is to shed light on an aspect of Gardiner's biography which has not previously been explained adequately, and so to illuminate the response of one conservative religious movement – the Catholic Apostolic Church – towards the challenges presented by developments in the disciplines of geology and Biblical studies. It is argued that for Gardiner doubt was a necessary function of the quest for truth.

Abstract:

A gestão da experiência do cliente é uma abordagem que vem gerando crescente interesse em profissionais e acadêmicos da área de marketing (KLAUS, 2013; RAWSON; DUNCAN; JONES, 2013). De outro lado, a qualidade em serviços continua sendo estudada e vem ganhando novas escalas e modelos para o contexto online (BOSHOFF, 2007; LI; SUOMI, 2009). O limiar entre os temas continua, porém, pouco explorado na literatura acadêmica, dificultando a operacionalização dos conceitos de maneira integrada (KLAUS, 2013). Este artigo busca elucidar a inter-relação entre os temas a partir da representação da jornada do cliente, onde a qualidade em serviços é um fator primordial para a entrega de valor, dentro de um contexto mais amplo, que envolve todos os pontos de contato do cliente com a empresa, que devem ser geridos a partir da centralidade de pensamento no cliente e no comprometimento em oferecer-lhe experiências positivamente diferenciadas, capazes de promover engajamento.

Abstract:

O presente trabalho aborda o tema da compreensão leitora de alunos do sétimo ano do Ensino Fundamental. Foi feito um estudo longitudinal, tendo como base teórica os estudos de Kintsch e Rawson (2013), Perfetti, Landi, Oakhill (2013) e de Kato (1985, 1986), Morais (1996) e Maia (2018, 2019) e como base metodológica a técnica de Cloze divulgada por Taylor (1953), Santos et al (2004) e Santos, Boruchovitch, Oliveira (2009). O objetivo foi mostrar que as atividades de leitura realizadas por meio de ensino sistemático envolvendo metacognição, metalinguagem e consciência sintática podem conduzir ao aprimoramento da compreensão leitora. Foram aplicados dois testes de Cloze em etapas avaliativas, uma no início e outra ao final da pesquisa, além de cinco atividades-teste durante a intervenção. O estudo sugere um crescimento significativo em compreensão leitora dos alunos no segundo teste, aplicado após a metodologia interventiva, apontando para um impacto positivo de ações pedagógicas baseadas em metacognição, metalinguagem e consciência sintática para o desenvolvimento da compreensão leitora.
