Last, Peter, William White, Marcelo de Carvalho, Bernard Séret, Matthias Stehmann, and Gavin Naylor, eds. Rays of the World. CSIRO Publishing, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643109148.

Full text
Abstract:
Rays are among the largest fishes and evolved from shark-like ancestors nearly 200 million years ago. They share with sharks many life history traits: all species are carnivores or scavengers; all reproduce by internal fertilisation; and all have similar morphological and anatomical characteristics, such as skeletons built of cartilage. Rays of the World is the first complete pictorial atlas of the world’s ray fauna and includes information on many species only recently discovered by scientists while undertaking research for the book. It includes all 26 families and 633 valid named species of rays, but additional undescribed species exist for many groups. Rays of the World features a unique collection of paintings of all living species by Australian natural history artist Lindsay Marshall, compiled as part of a multinational research initiative, the Chondrichthyan Tree of Life Project. Images sourced from around the planet were used by the artist to illustrate the fauna. This comprehensive overview of the world’s ray fauna summarises information such as general identifying features and distributional information about these iconic, but surprisingly poorly known, fishes. It will enable readers to gain a better understanding of the rich diversity of rays and promote wider public interest in the group. Rays of the World is an ideal reference for a wide range of readers, including conservationists, fishery managers, scientists, fishers, divers, students and book collectors.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Ray Bradbury's writings on Mars, with a particular focus on The Martian Chronicles (1950). It covers his discovery of Edgar Rice Burroughs' fiction at the age of ten; his early Mars stories; his composition of The Martian Chronicles; his efforts to move away from clichéd images of extraterrestrials; his emphasis on a seepage between the consciousnesses of his Earthlings and Martians; how the Martians in his stories emerge as projections or distorted mirror images of the human settlers; his emphasis of the importance of dwellings in The Martian Chronicles; and his later Mars publications. The final section of the chapter discusses how the Martian story “Usher II” engages most directly with the enforcement of literary censorship.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Ray Bradbury's achievement in fiction as a student at Los Angeles High School and his membership in Science Fiction League (SFL). It begins with a discussion of Bradbury's early obsession with Hollywood, as seen in his snapshots of scores of Hollywood stars and in more than a thousand autographs of Hollywood personalities, as well as with radio. It then considers Bradbury's fascination with the concept of space and on space and time travel during his time at Los Angeles High School; his participation in the activities of the Los Angeles SFL and editorial work with the organization; and his involvement with the school's poetry club known as “The Ink Beasts.” It also discusses how Bradbury's narratives were inspired by science fiction and fantasy pulps, such as those of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Finally, it recounts Bradbury's performance at a school production in May 1938.

Abstract:
This chapter explains some of the influences on authorship and reading discoveries behind Ray Bradbury's remarkable rise from raw and undisciplined talent to literary prominence. Once Bradbury realized that he could write with conviction and power from his own hopes, fears, and experiences, he was able to develop his own style instead of imitating the hallmarks of other writers. He discovered new, more mature influences and use them in honing his writing skills. Bradbury came to these discoveries through three interrelated processes: his professional reading in the nature of authorship, his ever-widening range of literary reading, and the constructive criticism offered by other writers. This chapter discusses Bradbury's professional readings between 1938 and 1944, including W. Somerset Maugham's The Summing Up, Dorothea Brande's Becoming a Writer, Lajos Egri's How to Write a Play, and Maren Elwood's Characters Make Your Story; the last three books provided the insights by which Bradbury worked out his own maturing dynamics as a writer.
