Abstract:
This article examines internal processes that helped Alinskyism become a hegemonic style of organizing among Chicanos in Texas over New-Left and Marxist styles. I argue that Alinskyite Chicanos outmaneuvered rival activists through what I call tactical dexterity. Tactical dexterity illuminates how actors transpose cultural schemas with organizational knowledge to craft tactics that build political power, negotiate status, and expunge rivals to control resources. The Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) and Raza Unida Party illustrate the political maneuverings of activists to organize Ch

In 1970 a group of Mexican Americans in Crystal City, Texas came together to form El Partido de La Raza Unida (The Raza Unida Party) and challenged the Anglos that had governed there for years. From that beginning came a state-wide party that ran a candidate for governor in 1972 and in a short period took political control of two counties and numerous other elected positions throughout the state. This thesis looks at two aspects in the development of the Raza Unida Party. It reviews the years leading up to the founding of the Mexican American Youth organization, which was the precursor of the

This dissertation analyzes Fort Worth's Mexican community from 1960 to 2000 while considering the idea of citizenship through representation in education and politics. After establishing an introductory chapter that places the research in context with traditional Chicano scholarship while utilizing prominent ideas and theories that exist within Modern Imperial studies, the ensuing chapter looks into the rise of Fort Worth's Mexican population over the last four decades of the twentieth century. Abstract:
Chapter 5 continues the story begun in chapter 4, when a split between Chicano Democrats and Chicano/Mexicano immigrant rights activists leads to the exodus of the latter from the statewide MAPA organization to the seemingly more radical politics of La Raza Unida Party, an ethnic third party effort. The chapter explores how this moment led to debates between various factions of the California La Raza Unida Party through which San Diego Chicano/Mexicano activists participated from roughly 1970-1975. Community activists in San Diego LRUP facilitated an approach in between a persistent narrow nationalism that, despite rhetoric otherwise, deemphasized the noncitizen migrant experience and struggled to embrace the diverse political positions within the ethnic Mexican community. San Diego Chicano/Mexicano LRUP organizers maintained engagement with the diverse ethnic Mexican community in their registration efforts, as they continued to learn about the limits of voting strategies in their mixed-legal status community.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on a protest at the US embassy in which women of color, particularly Wynta Boynes of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and Esther Urista of La Raza Unida, protested that the US delegation to the intergovernmental conference was insufficiently representative of US women. The episode signals the ways in which, in the wake of the US civil rights movement, race had emerged as the principal gauge of representation and identification. US delegation leaders claimed the confrontation as a victory, indicating that it demonstrated a “free and uninhibited exchange” and offered “an impressive and persuasive example of U.S. participatory democracy at work.
