Abstract:

Wu, Yan. "Fractal-based re-design." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/56190/.

Full text
Abstract:
Engineering conceptual design is a knowledge-intensive process that generates solutions to a product specification. It is a process that can benefit from past experience of similar designs. In reality however, designers often have limited time to build up the necessary experience and are, in any event, unlikely to become experts in all relevant fields. Hence there is a need to capture, store and reuse valuable knowledge. Currently available conventional CAD systems offer limited possibilities for the re-use of existing designs. Techniques from the field of Artificial Intelligence (Al) may be applied to aid the conceptual design phase, which is known as the area of intelligent computer-aided design. The aim of this work is to identify and externalise design knowledge using a fractal-like model, to understand the role of design knowledge in conceptual design and to use design knowledge as a guide for every stage of concept development. This research provides a framework for supporting conceptual design, which uses the techniques of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and fractal theory, for reasoning about the design and development of computer-based design aids. The framework is comprised of three parts. The first is case representation. This research proposes a new representation technique, Fractal-like Design Modelling (FDM), which integrates design knowledge in a graph-based form and has fractal-specific characteristics. The second is case retrieval. Based on FDM, the similarity between a new design and the existing designs is assessed by concurrently applying a feature-based similarity measure and a structure-based similarity measure. The third is case adaptation. With the help of fractal characteristics, an approach of adaptive design is developed by performance revision and by goal-oriented substitution. These three parts work together to achieve an automated, case-based, conceptual design method: Fractal-Based Re-design.

Doroftei, Teodor, and Omar Osorio. "Operator seat undercarriage re-design." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-141666.

Full text
Abstract:
Very few of today’s forest machines have damping at the wheels. The only damping that the operator has to shield him from the vibrations and shakes is the seats undercarriage. Unfortunately, today’s undercarriage do not measure up to the task, as they are often designed for trucks and busses, not to be used in a harsh environment as a forest. Except the short lifespan problem, there is also the issue of optimal damping. Today’s design does not allow for optimal damping at the maximum and minimum height positions. This Master´s Thesis project aim at creating a new and improved design that would separate height adjustment and damping, with the purpose to provide optimal damping within the entire height adjustment range. All this and at the same time making the design sturdier, with a greater lifespan, and to be able to damp vibrations and motions in more than one direction. The resulting design was then digitally analyzed to find out the optimal damping and spring coefficients, as well as the natural frequencies. Finally recommendations are given for design, analyses and further work that are needed to manufacture a prototype.

Thorsén, Emelie, and Maja Sjöberg. "Re-design av Persgårdens förpackningsserie." Thesis, Tekniska Högskolan, Högskolan i Jönköping, JTH, Data- och elektroteknik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-24181.

Full text
Abstract:
The packaging is becoming increasingly important and is sometimes the only communication channel to the consumer, especially in small family businesses. Persgården is a small Swedish family company located on Visingsö who sells organic muesli, various type of date, mixes of dried fruits and nuts. Persgårdens problem is that all of their packaging does not convey the same feel and communicate their core values. Our work has been to do a re-design of Persgårdens packaging. Our prime purpose was to change Persgårdens existing packaging so the packagings could get more uniformed to the customer and that consumers should easily recognize the packaging series. The purpose was also that Persgårdens packaging would stand out from other similar products on the market. The purpose was also to see how the process of production of food packaging works. Based on the purpose, the following questions have been developed: - Which core values do Persgården want to communicate?- Which elements and markings must appear on Persgårdens packaging?- How can we change Persgårdens existing packaging series to make it more uniformed, unique and communicate their core values? The methods that have been used to answer our questions are a literature survey and interviews with the owners of Persgården and external experts. We have also done a competitor analysis, moodboard and we have visit a fair. The new packagings has been developed based on a design process. The results of this work show the markings and elements that must be included on a food packaging. The core values of Persgården has been analyzed and chosen to be genuine, organic and health. Sketches and prototypes of the new packaging series have also been developed. During the development of the new packaging, consideration has been taken to what Persgården want to convey and their three core values. The result has been developed using mainly thoughts and ideas from the interviews and the literature survey. We can finally establish that it is important to think about where the package should be placed, what it should convey and that all packaging conveys the same feeling.

Abstract:
<p>Abstract</p><p>This master’s thesis is a project of 20p made in accordance with the requirements set by Halmstad University for a Master’s degree in Technical Product and Productions development. The objectives were to make a conceptual redesign of a portable fan for the</p><p>American company Hunter Fan. The redesign is intended to be suitable on the</p><p>Scandinavian market. The methodology and process are mainly based on Ullman’s</p><p>methodology for product development, in combination with Landqvist’s and Östelin’s</p><p>design methodology for production development. An optimal design process is rarely</p><p>identical from project to project; the best parts and tools from the different design</p><p>methodologies were used as support during the process.</p><p>The design process in this project started with research within topics suitable to solve the</p><p>problem definition. Brand research were made to determine Hunter Fan core values and</p><p>target group, the existing product was analysed to see what could be improved and the</p><p>market was investigated to learn from competitors. An image board was made to express</p><p>the values wanted for this project and for communication with people directly involved in</p><p>the design process. Trends were observed by a visit to the Stockholm Furniture Fair.</p><p>Further user personas and surveys were made to investigate the Scandinavian consumer’s</p><p>needs and requirements. This method gave important knowledge of how to design a</p><p>portable fan suitable for the Scandinavian market. Experts on the subject of matter were</p><p>interviewed to get understanding of how fan blade works and what alternative safety</p><p>solutions there are. In the ideation phase, brainstorming and sketching was a big part.</p><p>Over a hundred idea sketches were made and the ideas were carefully evaluated against</p><p>collected fact. In the finalization phase, the remaining concepts were refined with</p><p>methods like mock-up models, CAD and computer renderings.</p><p>The result is a successful conceptual design of a table fan suitable for the Scandinavian</p><p>market. Hunter Fan also believes the fan can easily be transformed to the Urban</p><p>American cities of New York and other large cities. The table fan owns the values of</p><p>Scandinavian design; a simple uncomplicated design, functional and with an expression</p><p>of simplicity and modernity. It still owns Hunter Fan core value of high quality. The</p><p>design easily blends in the carefully decorated Scandinavian home. It is also easy to</p><p>move, put away and store like the Scandinavian consumer requires. There is a need on the</p><p>Scandinavian market for a well designed portable fan and the final design of this project</p><p>fulfill the requirements to be a successful product.</p>

Abstract:
The American Small Town will forever have a place in the undertones of American culture and in the American psychy. The small town has become an identifing piece of the fabric that the overall American Society as a whole uses to project its own image, not only to the world but to its self. This study is an examination of key elements of the American Small town and an exploration into why these places are disappearing. The study goes on to utilize this information to derive a plan for a small town that is free of modern day plights, such as sprawl and redundency. In the end, it proposes a plan for the community of Four Corners, M.T. This case study re-design is an example of how small communities can be shaped early on to prevent waste, maximize efficiency and quality of life.

Through the design of a home and work-related out-buildings elements of reference are used to preserve an interplay between the landscape and the architecture. A dialogue between the largeness of the landscape and the comparative smallness of the human scale is maintained through the use of references such as walls, columns and gateways. Additionally, this thesis explores the multiple roles of these references in exploring the function of transitions (inside to outside and outside to inside) . The architectural history of northern New Mexico as well as current building trends inform the thinking and the design presented. Användartester som utförts visar hur Ligistfilm uppfattas utifrån den gamla webbsidan jämfört med den nya webbsidan tillsammans med presentationsfilmen.<br>How can a company brand themselves and what may the effects of this be? How is a company perceived by a drastic change of image? This essay describes the creative process of a re-design of a website and the development of a presentation movie to see if the production company Ligistfilm can be perceived in a new way. From a black, dark and masculine website into a bright, modern and open-minded website along with a presentation film about Ligistfilm and their work, we will look into how the visitors perception of the company can change. The change of the website includes also a shift of focus. From being a website focusing on Ligistfilm as a company into a website focusing on their directors individually. Abstract:

Abstract:
This study explores the design space of motocross within Human-Computer Interaction with focus on warning riders of danger while practicing unsupervised. Using autobiographical design, the aim was to investigate mechanisms and modalities suitable for motocross where the environment, tracks, physical and mental load on the riders were some of the challenges faced. With basis in research within other sports and a domain expert focus group, a prototype was developed and iterated over a period of three months using the author and recruited participants as riders. The process was documented using a diary. The study concluded that using the helmet as mounting point was effective due to not being intrusive for the riders and no track alterations were needed to implement the system for real use. Visual feedback using light mounted under the visor showed to be unreliable due to sun interference, while sound created by vibrations on the top of the helmet shown to be suitable for warning motocross riders. Using visual and auditory modalities together, the light was concluded to be efficient as an information display when attention was brought to the rider by the vibration sound.<br>Denna studie utforskar designrymden (eng. design space) för motocross inom människa-datorinteraktion med fokus på att varna motocrossförare om faror när träning sker utan tillsyn.

Assibey, Ginn Bonsu. "Design interventions for re-conceptualising sustainable graphic design practices in Ghana." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/3087.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTech (Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019<br>This research explored and examined graphic design practices through the lens of the Sustainability Development Analytical Grid. The exploration was meant to discover how graphic design practices are carried out - from idea inception to the delivery stage of graphic design products - in a developing nation. The essence of the exploration was to understand how graphic designers make design decisions and the effects of these design decisions in the pre-press, press and post-press activities from a sustainability perspective. In the examination, the first task was to probe the identified graphic design practices using the selected sustainability framework, to ascertain what the challenges are to sustainability in graphic design practices. The second task was to explore sustainable, emerging-design interventions and match them to the identified challenges within the same graphic design community. This served as a means for re-conceptualising sustainable graphic design for purposes of best practice in a particular developing nation. This research, thus, advances that aside from the environmental dimension, the social and economic dimensions of sustainability are also integral parts of sustainability, and thus the holistic nature of sustainability should be recognised as such in sustainable graphic design. In the research study, empathic, contextual and ethnographic human-centred approaches were deployed through the interpretivist paradigm. The selected human-centred approaches were used with the aid of an amalgamation of the Sustainability Development Analytical Grid and Activity Theory to examine graphic design practices from a graphic design production perspective. Qualitative research methods were used. The data-gathering tools used were participant observation, interviews and document reviews to interrogate the nature of graphic design practices, the challenges to sustainability and the emerging-design interventions used by some designers to counter the challenges to sustainability. The research site was Asafo, a suburb of Kumasi in Ghana. The selected samples were four graphic design firms, 30 graphic designers, 15 creative directors, 30 clients and 30 graphic design products, all were selected purposively. The results revealed several challenges to sustainability in graphic design practices such as lack of knowledge on proper disposal of printing machine chemicals, poor choice of printing paper without environmental considerations and weak ethics in the promotion of unapproved graphic design packages for food products. On the other hand, there were local, emerging-design interventions within the same graphic design community developed by the designers that countered most of the challenges to sustainability. The local design interventions supported the concept of cosmopolitan localism that gives graphic designers room to develop solutions that are local but have global essence. The study proposes that the future of holistic sustainable graphic design lies in local design interventions, implying that the developing nations have alternative solutions to their problems and must be allowed to develop their resilience through innovation.

This report describes the production process during a re-design of a website. The communications agency Åkesson &amp; Currys website has existed for over five years. In these days the company does not think that the website represents who they are. The aim for me was to examine how they look upon their identity. The goal was to enable a new vision of Åkesson &amp; Curry's identity and come up with design sketches of a website that presents them in a right manner. The re-design enables the user to become interested in the agency and desire to initiate a contact with Åkesson &amp; Curry. The report describes my approach through interviews, lists of goals, personas and scenarios. These methods have led me to a solid starting point when developing the colour palette, logotype and producing the design sketches. The development was done in the programs Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. The result was a website that is clean, warm and attractive – the opposite of Åkesson &amp; Curry's current website.

Abstract:
Engineering Design Re-use refers to the utilisation of any knowledge gained from the design activity to support future design. As such, Engineering Design Re-use approaches are concerned with the support, exploration and enhancement of design knowledge prior, during and after a design activity. Modular Design is a product structuring principle whereby products are developed with distinct modules for rapid product development, efficient upgrades, and possible re-use (of the physical modules). The benefits of Modular Design centre of a greater capacity for structuring component parts to better manage the relation between market requirements and the designed product. This work explores the capabilities of Modular Design principles to provide improved support for the Engineering Design Reuse concept. The Modular Design principle is extended to structure not only the artefact's components but also their associated knowledge, to support, explore and enhance the knowledge genera ted during the evolution of the design process. A novel modular design approach, termed a Multi-Viewpoint Modular Design Methodology, is developed to address identified requirements including; support for evolutionary design knowledge, exploration and identification of inherent modularity and maintenance of the modular solution. The overall concept of the Methodology is to support the designer in evolving a modular artefact whilst utilising the principles of modularity to structure the artefact knowledge to enhance its potential applicability for re-use, the concept is termed knowledge modularity. Based on the results of a state of the art review deficiencies of existing approaches are identified including; insufficient support of evolutionary design knowledge, insufficiencies in the modelling, exploration, identification and representation of knowledge modularity, limitations in the module identification process. Declarative and procedural knowledge is developed to define a novel Modular Design Methodology to address these deficiencies. As such, the Methodology presents a formalised approach to support the modelling, optimisation and identification of modularity, both within and across viewpoints (function, working principle and structure) of the product structure, and evolutionary design knowledge. The core phenomena of a knowledge module is formalised in terms of the knowledge of design concepts and their dependencies. The formalism supports the identification of inherent modularity. An alternative model, termed the Modular Structure Matrix is developed as part of the Methodology to represent this inherent modularity. In addition, the Methodology has been developed, through a 12-month industrial residency, to address the requirements of practising designers. The Methodology is applied throughout a design activity to formalise and represent (in a matrix formalism) knowledge of the concepts embodied by a design artefact. The resulting model provides the basis to determine and represent interdependency knowledge between design concepts. The modelled concept and dependency knowledge can be utilised to support a modular analysis of the product structure both within and across design viewpoints. An optimisation and module identification mechanism can then be applied to the model and, based on the dependency data, identify inherent modularity within individual viewpoints of the product structure. Further, a mapping methodology has been developed to support the maintenance of the modular solution, and its associated artefact knowledge, across multiple viewpoints of design. The new methodology can be applied in a cyclic and iterative manner to support modularisation of the artefact design knowledge through the evolution of the design. A computational implementation has been developed to aid the evaluation of the Methodology. The functionality ofthe Methodology has been illustrated through two literature based case studies and two industrial implementation evaluations. An implementation and evaluation methodology was formalised through the rationalisation of the activities carried out during the first, and further utilised as the basis to support the second, industrial implementation. The two literature based studies evaluate the functionality of the methodologies optimisation and module identification mechanisms. These evaluations result in the identification of modular hierarchies that were not evident in the findings of the original publications. In addition, both industrial implementations result in the identification of potential improvements in the design. The evaluations illustrate the functionality of the Methodology in identifying and maintaining modularity, structuring design knowledge, supporting decision-making, learning, and improving design understanding. In addition, the evaluators outlined further potential Methodology application fields such as team design, manufacturing design and technology life-cycle management. Further the strengths and weaknesses of the Methodology, the computational implementation, and the research methodology utilised to facilitate the work presented in this thesis, are discussed. Finally, future work required to enhance the capabilities of the Multi- Viewpoint MD methodology and the functionality of the computational implementation have been identified, including; the development of more advanced modular clustering criterions, the introduction of constraints and constraint management, and the development of module costing mechanisms/metrics.

Jung, Yunhee. "Remodelling the cavity of a transmembrane pore by genetic engineering." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3880.

Full text
Abstract:
The cavity within the transmembrane staphylococcal α-hemolysin (αHL) pore is roughly a sphere of diameter ~45 Å (volume ~32,600 Å3). The alpha-hemolysin gene was modified to introduce exogenous polypeptide sequences between positions 105 and 106 of αHL. These modified αHLs were assembled either by themselves or with wild-type (W) subunits to form stable homoheptamers and heteroheptamers, respectively. First, the ability to accommodate Gly/Ser-rich polypeptide sequences in the central cavity was tested. Concatemerized Gly/Ser-containing sequences ("loops", L; L(10n + 5), n = 0 to 21) were inserted by genetic approaches. Detailed analysis of bilayer recordings and electrophoretic migration patterns of assembled pores indicate that the upper capacity of the cavity is ~175 amino acids. Then two different polypeptides were placed in the cavity to introduce novel functional properties to the αHL pore. By introducing tandem repeats of elastin-like polypeptide sequences (VPGGG), αHL pores (E101W6) that featured a temperature-responsive gating mechanism were obtained. The temperature-dependent properties of E101W6 pores were monitored by single-channel current recording in planar lipid bilayers. The amplitude and the frequency of the transient blockades increased as the temperature increased, while their duration decreased. The hydrophobic collapse of the inserted ELP loop is proposed for the source of the observed sigmoidal two-state transition for normalized closed states of E101W6 pores. Lastly, an αHL pore was designed to detect proteins from the cis side of the membrane. The heat-stable protein kinase inhibitor (PKI) sequence was inserted into the mid-position of the Gly/Ser loop, which was generated by previous project (L105 construct). The heteromeric pore with the PKI-containing loop (P1151W6) was able to detect cAMP-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (PKA) at single molecular level. These engineered αHL pores provide numerous possibilities as tools for drug delivery, cryopreservation, or molecular sensing.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a systematic approach to solving the problem of large deflections in the ZBee vehicle, proposing feasible insert solutions while reducing weight and increasing efficiency were possible. An experimental study was done on the structural deformations of a sample ZBee floor using highly advanced measuring instruments. Based on this background a finite element model was developed which simulates the experiment to a good level of correlation. Modifications were then carried out on the model to examine different factors which affect the stiffness and hence deflections experienced by the driver. Based on a systematic selection of alternative solution an insert analysis was done which gives initial design parameters for a new insert implementation. To improve the manufacturability and hence cost of the Zbee floor, a new floor design with simpler geometry was analyzed and further developed based on the stiffness properties studied on the old chassis.<br>ZBee är ett trehjuligt fordon utformat för att transportera tre personer inklusive föraren.

Title as it appears in MIT degrees awarded booklet, September 18, 2013: Hybrid reAssembage: introducing traditional practice into contemporary design.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Hybrid reAssemblage is a design gestalt that lies at the cross-section of digital design practice and the tactile qualities of traditional craft. It spans a territory in which the value of artifacts is produced through automated production as well as human subjectivity. This work is an exploration of two divergent realms: that of emerging computational technologies, and traditional hand-hewn practice. Hybrid reAssemblage proposes a new way of thinking about the machine, as generator of control and efficiency, and the unpredictable and singular nature of the raw and the manual. I illustrate Hybrid reAssemblage through three diverse projects: FreeD is a digital handheld milling device for carving, guided and monitored by a computer while preserving the maker's freedom to manipulate the work in many creative ways. It reintroduces craft techniques to digital fabrication, proposing a hybrid human-computer interaction experience. In addition to the technology, I present a user study, demonstrating how FreeD enables personalization and expression as an inherent part of the fabrication process. Chameleon Guitar exploits a selection of acoustic properties via a set of replaceable resonators and by a simulated shape, merging real-wood acoustic qualities with a simulated guitar body. It marries digital freedom with the uniqueness of acoustic instruments, and demonstrates a hybrid functionality platform. Focusing on the production of sonic qualities, this project is evaluated acoustically, pointing to the significance of attention to detail such as craft and wood qualities. Finally, Fused Crafts is a collection of artifacts that are part handcrafted and part 3D printed, visually demonstrating the potential of combining these practices to create hybrid aesthetics. I illustrate this visual concept with two examples: intentionally broken ceramic artifacts with 3D printed restoration, and 3D printed structure that is designed to allow the application of hand-woven patterns. This project is a search for an approach where both technologies can benefit from each other aesthetically, enriching the final product with new qualities. This dissertation begins with a contextual background, leading to the presentation of the projects. In the last part, I evaluate the work through feedback received from a panel of design, craft, and HCI experts.<br>Amit Zoran.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2002.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 56-57).<br>During the past decade, medical facility design has gone through enormous change not only because of new health care management system but exploding technological advances in diagnostic equipments and fast communication system. New imaging equipment is now, better, smaller, less noisy. And digitized image results can be transmitted through the high-speed cable to multiple locations. In addition, robotics is changing the surgery suite organization. On the management side, hospitals are pressured to cut down their cost as much as possible in order to maintain the market share in today's ever changing health care environment. My thesis ,in the first phase, focuses on identifying some of the important factors that are affecting the current hospital organization: "Computerization, telemedicine, digital imaging MRls, CT and PET scanners, ultrasound, and lab and surgical equipment will make existing technology obsolete." (Health facilities Management Feb. 1997, 18-22). These changes have already prompted many reactions in how to reorganize or renovate the existing facility so that hospitals not only can accommodate the current changes but also possible changes in the future; the issue of flexibility, changeability is the key underlying concept. Next phase of my thesis focuses on arriving at organizational strategy recommendations and its models. Some of the important strategy concerns are; rationalization of circulation which brings design that requires less staff(efficiency), emphasis on integration of similar functions that are caused by the new technology, issue of providing the maximum flexibility and changeability to the new organization, new relationship between the departments, offices, labs etc. Information Technology with digitized information such as imaging results, patients' access to their comprehensive medical files in their room or any place in the hospital, and other aspects of telemedicine is an important changing force in the future of hospital organization that will be examined. With all the research, my thesis will recommend the organizational strategy and exemplary design of comprehensive outpatient care facility.<br>by Jooyeol Oh.<br>M.Arch.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis illustrates the potential of Kenneth Burke’s theory for interrogating visual design trend dynamics and rhetorics. The investigation originated in response to the perceived unsustainability of accelerated design trend dynamics, as amplified by rhetorically-driven aesthetic obsolescence. The hermeneutic framework developed in this study, referred to as a Burkean meta-rhetorical approach, is thus used towards re-framing attitudes towards and engagements with design trends. The framework is illustrated throughout the study by referring to visual design examples as well as verbal discourse surrounding prominent historical and contemporary design movements or trends. Various theoretical facets form part of the meta-rhetorical framework, namely Burke’s dialectics, dramatism, rhetoric, criticism and ethics. A Burkean dialectical perspective on design trends offers foundational insights on how symbolic language creates ‘design dialectics’, which translate into dynamic design change over time. Burke’s ‘dramatism’ sheds light on the human-relational ‘design drama’ that impacts design trend engagements. Burke’s rhetoric offers insights on rhetorical strategies or persuasive tactics found in ‘the rhetorical design situation’, where designers are both producers and consumers of design trend rhetorics. Burke’s critical theory is useful for interrogating perceived ‘design (dis)orders’ or design attitudes and behaviours that become imbalanced, potentially contributing to and exacerbating problematic trend dynamics. Lastly, Burke’s symbolic re-framing strategies are considered towards developing more ethical, honest and responsible (less polemical or melodramatic) trend rhetorics. Burke’s meta-rhetorical theory is thus presented as a valuable theoretical approach in design, for nurturing greater rhetorical awareness and promoting more responsible rhetorical design citizenship.<br>Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2018.<br>Visual Arts<br>PhD<br>Unrestricted

Inferring Design Environment (IDE) is a concept sketch that assimilates a dialog or turn-taking game onto a two dimensional digital canvas, which in turn helps designers learn about their learning processes. This turn-taking process eventually gives rise to meaningful expression through the use of a rule the Designer has made previously. Henceforth, learning is not something that has a goal and purpose such as teaching does, but is rather the emergence and discovery of an interaction of finite elements and the "self"' in an Environment.<br>by Akira Gunji.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of two years of research and development activities on the Sensor Network and SHM fields. It is based on the vision of the establishment a re-design approach (based on a stack structure) respect to the sensor networks world and on the integration of the desired sensors and structures into them. The scope of this project has been to overcome some of the intrinsic issues related to a standard sensor network and in this sense, they can be easily identified: -The structural and logical complexity in adapting the network to the various conditions that can be faced up during an on field analysis; -The repetition of the basic structures spreaded on the whole system that can reduce the reliability of it; -The limited modularity of the system in terms of technological requirements. In this way, it has been developed a Base component with the scope of providing the conceptual and logistic basis for the new network implementation. It relies specially on a communication method (divided in an internal and an external entity) and a supply voltage protection and conversion stage. After this project step, it has investigated how to develop a board thought as an upper layer of the stackable system. According to this, it has been analyzed a SHM module with the aim of focusing on the integration of a not standard sensor network node in the new concept. So, it has been evaluated how to implement a NDT board and in this way it has been identified a Pulser chip. Consequently to its selection, the requirements related to it has been identified. So, all the needed parts has been developed, namely: -The high voltage converters used to supply the Pulser; -The voltage converters for supplying the Pulser logical section and the Opamps; -The Opamps signal conditioning and monitoring structure; -The communication method towards the other sections of the stack.According to this, an analytical approach has been adopted in order to optimize the concept creation.

Abstract:
Although Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) meshed transport networks support high-speed optical connections, these networks lack the flexibility to support sub-wavelength traffic leading to poor bandwidth usage. To cope with the transport of that huge and heterogeneous amount of traffic, multilayer networks represent the most accepted architectural solution. Multilayer optical networks allow optimizing network capacity by means of packing several low-speed traffic streams into higher-speed optical connections (lightpaths). During this operation, a dynamic virtual topology is created and modified the whole time thanks to a control plane responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and release of connections. Because of this dynamicity, a suboptimal allocation of resources may exist at any time. In this context, a periodically resource reallocation could be deployed in the network, thus improving network resource utilization. This thesis is devoted to the characterization, planning, and re-optimization of next-generation multilayer networks from an integral perspective including physical layer, optical layer, virtual layer, and control plane optimization. To this aim, statistical models, mathematical programming models and meta-heuristics are developed. More specifically, this main objective has been attained by developing five goals covering different open issues. First, we provide a statistical methodology to improve the computation of the Q-factor for impairment-aware routing and wavelength assignment problems (IA-RWA). To this aim we propose two statistical models to compute the Cross-Phase Modulation variance (which represents the bottleneck in terms of computation time and complexity) in off-line and on-line IA-RWA problems, proving the accuracy of both models when computing Q-factor values in real traffic scenarios. Second and moving to the optical layer, we present a new wavelength partitioning scheme that allows maximizing the amount of extra traffic provided in shared path protected environments compared with current solutions. Specifically, we define several statistical models to estimate the traffic intensity given a target grade of service, and different network planning problems for maximizing the expected revenues and net present value. After solving these problems for real networks, we conclude that our proposed scheme maximizes both revenues and NPV. Third, we tackle the design of survivable multilayer networks against single failures at the IP/MPLS layer and WSON links. To efficiently solve this problem, we propose a new approach based on over-dimensioning IP/MPLS devices and lightpath connectivity and recovery and we compare it against the conventional solution based on duplicating backbone IP/MPLS nodes. After evaluating both approaches by means of ILP models and heuristic algorithms, we conclude that our proposed approach leads to significant CAPEX savings. Fourth, we introduce an adaptive mechanism to reduce the usage of opto-electronic (O/E) ports of IP/MPLS-over-WSON multilayer networks in dynamic scenarios. A ILP formulation and several heuristics are developed to solve this problem, which allows significantly reducing the usage of O/E ports in very short running times. Finally, we address the design of resilient control plane topologies in GMPLS-enabled transport networks. After proposing a novel analytical model to quantify the resilience in mesh control plane topologies, we use this model to propose a problem to design the control plane topology. An iterative model and a heuristic are proposed and used to solve real instances, concluding that a significant reduction in the number of control plane links can be performed without affecting the quality of service of the network.

Abstract:
A significant change is taking place in manufacturing company strategies around the globe. With new monitoring and service methods, new opportunities of product use and service provision emerge. The manufacturing companies once focused on mere product manufacture, now have started to provide ‘systemic solutions’, i.e. products combined with service packages, which are often referred to as Product-Service Systems (PSS). Currently, there is not a well-established feedback mechanism between service and design. The aim of this research is to develop a methodology to capture, represent, and re-use service knowledge to support product design. For the accomplishment of this aim an extensive literature review of the related themes to the research area took place. It was found that the feedback from service to design is fundamental for the enhancement of product performance; however, the existing literature in this area is not adequate. The industrial investigation led to the realisation that there is not an established mechanism in place to show how service knowledge (SK) can be used by designers. An in- depth investigation took place with the collaboration of, in total, four UK manufacturing companies. The author studied both the conceptual and detailed design, focusing on the design requirements (DR) and the design/service features (DF/SF) respectively. The first step was the capture of SK and its representation using Protégé software. Following this, at the conceptual design stage, SK can be re-used through the DR-SK tool. The two main purposes of the tool are the knowledge retrieval by designers, and the identification of gaps in SK. At the detailed design stage, designers can access SK through the DF-SK tool, and the developed knowledge templates. The SKaD framework was created, as a result of the amalgamation among the SKaD methodology, the knowledge templates, and the tools developed to link SK and DR, SF, and DF. Conclusively, the framework was applied on case studies within the pump manufacturing and aerospace industries, and its purpose (to aid designers accessing and re-using SK) was validated by experts within the collaborating organisations. As a result of this research’s findings, the service personnel can capture SK in a structured manner, which can then be re- used by product designers at both the conceptual and detailed design stage.

<p> This dissertation is a historical project that traces the development of notable strands of composition pedagogy first crafted by Gregory Ulmer in his 1984 Applied Grammatology that continue to the present day, and groups them together in how they are incorporating multimodal tools in writing instruction that demand innovation in composition instruction. This will demonstrate how the work of certain contemporary composition scholars can be seen as creatively re-working the invention model that was devised and promoted by Ulmer in 1984. Through this history of invention in composition, Ulmer's invention model of writing instruction is clearly seen as both situated within a contemporary American Romanticism, and influenced heavily by Derridean deconstruction, and I will show that today's scholars who are students of Ulmer's invention model are creating pedagogy that effectively bring together elements of both Romanticism and Deconstruction.</p>

Abstract:
Motivated by the need to understand which are the underlying forces that trigger network evolution, we develop a multilevel theoretical and empirically testable model to examine the relationship between changes in the external environment and network change. We refer to network change as the dissolution or replacement of an interorganizational tie, adding also the case of the formation of new ties with new or preexisting partners. Previous research has paid scant attention to the organizational consequences of quantum change enveloping entire industries in favor of an emphasis on continuous change. To highlight radical change we introduce the concept of environmental jolt. The September 11 terrorist attacks provide us with a natural experiment to test our hypotheses on the antecedents and the consequences of network change. Since network change can be explained at multiple levels, we incorporate firm-level variables as moderators. The empirical setting is the global airline industry, which can be regarded as a constantly changing network of alliances. The study reveals that firms react to environmental jolts by forming homophilous ties and transitive triads as opposed to the non jolt periods. Moreover, we find that, all else being equal, firms that adopt a brokerage posture will have positive returns. However, we find that in the face of an environmental jolt brokerage relates negatively to firm performance. Furthermore, we find that the negative relationship between brokerage and performance during an environmental jolt is more significant for larger firms. Our findings suggest that jolts are an important predictor of network change, that they significantly affect operational returns and should be thus incorporated in studies of network dynamics.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 224-254).<br>The word "dross" refers to matter that is foreign, worn out and impure, such as the scum formed by oxidation at the surface of molten metals. Based on a perception of material impurity, this thesis encompasses the generative potential of obsolete objects and spaces, or in other words waste material that is displaced culturally or functionally from its previous identity. The cultural fabric for this thesis revolves around the material ramifications of unprecedented technological evolutions in communications, in terms of unparalleled waste production of defunct apparatuses. As rapid growth rates in technology have irreversibly shifted our consumption modes, immense amounts of 'techno-junk' are being produced, not only in the size of objects (defunct computers), but also in the size of rooms (oil tanks, air-conditioning tubes, containers etc.) and buildings ('brownfields', abandoned landscapes). The content of this thesis engages 'obsolete matter' in various scales of reference, or 'techno-excrements' as an emerging city-born condition, derivative of the urban system's internal erosion. Since it is impossible to dispose of these objects due to their extremely high-embodied material energy, this thesis lies on the premise of their 'architectural' reuse and the development of post-praxis design strategies. The mandate behind this intention is to revisit our design and material culture, not by attempting to create new memory, but by recycling meanings of objects and spaces with embedded memory. In terms of the methodology used, the intent is to go beyond existing techniques, such as reuse through signification and collage of unrelated building parts and to explore the possibilities of cast materials and generative processes of 'moulding'<br>(cont.) related to computation.<br>by Lydia Kallipoliti.<br>S.M.

Elton, Christopher John. "The re-design of rural governance : new institutions for old?" Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2011. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19624/.

Full text
Abstract:
For 40 years after the war, government in the UK supported, subsidised and promoted the expansion of agricultural production, to the exclusion of almost all other rural issues. Similar expansion of food production was encouraged across Western Europe. This 'productivist' era came to an end during the 1980s provoking a reassessment of the role of agriculture and of rural areas. Rural geographers have identified a post-productivist transition but have sought to explain the causes of change through the framework of regulation theory. The study rejects this approach as focusing its explanation on changes in accumulation imperatives within some agent-less process. It adopts a constructivist/discursive institutionalist framework which endogenizes agency and seeks to explain institutional change through exploring the role of ideas in responding to crises and critical junctures. The study proceeds through the construction of structured policy narratives over the period from the war to the present. The study contrasts the development of productivist regimes in the UK and the European Community and reveals significant differences in the policy institutions which have strongly influenced UK relations with the Community and the integration of UK agriculture within the Common Agricultural Policy. It is argued that responses to the crisis created by the end of the productivist regime reflected the contrast in rural policy institutions. The study identifies a paradigm shift in the Common Agricultural Policy enabling reform to be constructed within the context of the normative values which shaped its original design. The Thatcher government by contrast introduced a neo-liberal rural policy. Recently, New Labour has introduced a re-design of rural governance. It is argued that the Treasury was influential in its role as meta-governor in advocating alternative cognitive assumptions which denied the distinctiveness of rural economic and social needs. The outcome has been the disintegration of rural policy in England.

Abstract:
In the internet age, privacy and security have become major concerns since an increasing number of transactions are made over an unsecured network. Thus there is a greater chance for private data to be misused. Further, insider attacks can result in loss of valuable data. Hence there arises a strong need for continual, non-intrusive, quick user re-authentication. Previously, a number of studies have been conducted on authentication using behavioral attributes. Currently, few successful re-authentication mechanisms are available since they use either the mouse or the keyboard for re-authentication and target particular applications. However, successful re-authentication is still dependent on a large number of factors such as user excitation level, fatigue and using just the keyboard or the mouse does not mitigate these factors successfully. <p> Both keyboard and mouse contain valuable, hard-to-duplicate information about the userâ s behavior. This can be used for analysis and identification of the current user. We propose an application independent system that uses this information for user re-authentication. This system will authenticate the user continually based on his/her behavioral attributes obtained from both the keyboard and mouse operations. This re-authentication system is simple, continual, non-intrusive and easily deployable. To utilize the mouse and keyboard information for re-authentication, we propose a novel heuristic that uses the percentage of mouse-to-keyboard interaction ratio. This heuristic allows us to extract suitable user-behavioral attributes. The extracted data is compared with an already trained database for user re-authentication. <p> The accuracy of the system is calculated by the number of correct identifications to total number of identifications. At present, the accuracy of the system is around 96% for application based user re-authentication and around 82% for application independent user re-authentication. We perform black box, white box testing and Spec# verification procedures that prove the robustness of the proposed system. On testing POCKET, a privacy protection software for children, it was found that the security of POCKET was inadequate at the user level. Our system enhances POCKET security at the user level and ensures that the childâ s privacy is protected.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
Spotify is a music service that offers on-demand streaming and is available in several countries worldwide. As the company and the interest for it grows, more and more parties are involved and those involved, including the record labels want to control and get an overview of their products. They want to be able to see, for example, when a product is available on Spotify and in which countries. Spotify is in May 2013 in process of developing a to be used by administrators on Spotify in order to meet the record labels with the information requested. The new software intends being used by administrators but also by the record labels so that they will be able to overview their products availability. We were asked by one of the developers to conduct user interviews and tests to result in a design proposal on how the display page of information about a product could be visualized more clearly so that it suits both record labels and employees at Spotify. The results of our contextual interviews were translated into a prototype with two display pages. One of them in list format to satisfy administrators and their work and a the other one in shape of a map primarily intended to accommodate the record labels. We made use of contextual design and its working models and interviewing techniques and worked iteratively with several prototype testing.

Abstract:
Chemotherapy is the most commonly used treatment for cancer, as surgery and radiation therapy are often not effective in treating cancer at every location where it spreads. However, drug resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents and/or reduction in effectiveness of a drug is the leading cause of failure of chemotherapy. Drugs are developed to bind efficiently to a given therapeutic target, called the primary target. Unfortunately, drug treatments can suffer from bindingto a secondary target that perturbs drug activity and/or impacts its metabolism. The main aim of the PhD project was to develop an integrative chemoinformatics approach to optimize drug design by studying not only the primary target but also putative secondary effects at the atomic level in order to compute more accurate binding modes and to derive better affinity estimates. The presented drug design project aims for an improved inhibitor of the serine/threonine kinase mutant BRAFV600E with simultaneous loss of binding to the secondary target PXR. Focus is on the study of both, protein kinase BRAF and nuclear receptor PXR, which is involved in regulation of xenobiotic metabolism. A machine learning tool is first developed on the well studied nuclear receptor ERα due to large amounts of experimental data, and subsequently similarly generated for BRAFV600E. Despite its recognized importance in drug metabolism, we are still lacking sufficient structural information and affinity measurements to develop machine learning models for PXR. So, an alternative approach that relies on molecular dynamics combined with the Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area method is employed in order to obtain a precise estimation of ligand affinities. Finally, diverse computational tools are applied to design new derivatives of the initial drug, which is too rapidly metabolized in many patients resulting in resistance and cancer relapse. The properties of the new compounds prevent activation of metabolizing enzymes that are degrading the original drug. This is expected to provide a new drug-candidate with much better pharmacokintics properties and enhanced efficacy. This thesis comprises a complete drug design pipeline and presents an integrated strategy that includes modeling, in silico design and synthesis, virtual screening, affinity predictions, in vitro tests and X-ray crystallography. The main focus is on the computational part that comprises complementary approaches from the drug’s and from the proteins’ point of view

Abstract:
The ability to independently control the expression of multiple genes in response to small-molecule inducers is highly desirable in the study of metabolic pathways and has numerous applications in the fields of drug discovery and synthetic biology. The existing small-molecule-inducible gene expression tools such as the lac, ara and tet systems have a number of limitations including poor titratability and a tendency to promote cell population heterogeneity. To address these shortcomings, the Micklefield laboratory has developed a novel method for controlling gene expression by re-engineering naturally occurring regulatory elements known as riboswitches. Riboswitches are mRNA-based, small-molecule-responsive genetic switches found in the 5’-UTR of many bacterial genes. We have previously shown that it is possible to re-engineer natural riboswitches, such that they are no longer activated by their cognate metabolite, but instead respond to a non-natural synthetic analogue not ordinarily present in the cell. Our most recent target for re-engineering was the tetrahydrofolate (THF)-responsive riboswitch found to control the folT gene in Firmicutes. The THF riboswitch is unique in that it contains two distinct ligand binding sites within the same aptamer domain, and was considered a candidate for the engineering of a dual-input, repressive gene expression system. To date, the THF riboswitch has not been characterised in vivo and therefore we also sought to further understand the ligand specificity and the role of the two binding sites in eliciting the riboswitch regulatory response. We established an in vivo reporter gene assay in E. coli and demonstrated that the THF riboswitch is able to dose-dependently repress gene expression in response to the THF analogue folinic acid. Ligand binding to the aptamer domain PK site was found to be the primary mechanism by which the regulatory response is mediated in vivo. We designed, synthesised and screened in vivo a series of THF analogues, which identified a potent inhibitor of the wild-type riboswitch, and was confirmed in vitro using ITC. Moreover, the de-repressive activity of the inhibitor compound was exploited to optimise the expression parameters of the wild-type riboswitch. In parallel, we successfully re-engineered one of the two aptamer domain ligand binding sites, such that it selectively bound a non-natural THF analogue whilst rejecting folinic acid as demonstrated in vitro. Additionally, this mutant riboswitch-ligand pair was shown to dose-dependently repress gene expression in vivo. This represents a significant step towards the engineering of a dual-input THF riboswitch gene expression system.

Abstract:
Through this report, the re-design process of a self-balancing robot is described. Different factors affecting the performance of the self-balancing task such as weight and mass centre location are analysed to follow with the design of a new prototype based on lightness and decoupling of components concepts. Furthermore, different control algorithms (PID, LQR and PID + P) are analysed, simulated, and compared between them to recognize the most optimal control system. This theoretical analysis is used as a guideline for the implementation of the control system in the prototype. The instability of an inverted pendulum system is a big issue in terms of controllability. So, simulations are carried out approaching to a more realistic scenario with the development of a non-linear dynamic model of the system via Simulink. Following the path for a more realistic simulation of the control system, controller’s performance is analysed and problems regarding execution time and time variability are identified. Moreover, the lack of information according the use of Raspberry Pi with MATLAB for the control of a self-balancing robot has motivated the definition of a strategy for enabling code programming through MATLAB and consequent code execution in Raspberry Pi microcontroller, clarifying the challenges that this environment drags with and giving solutions to this problem. Finally, with the idea this work could be used as a start-point for future works and use in educational area, conclusions are defined and explained, and future tasks are suggested to enhance the knowledge on this matter.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we develop scalable frameworks to (re)design a class of large-scale network systems with built-in control mechanisms, including electric power systems and the Internet, in order to improve their economic efficiency and performance while guaranteeing their stability and robustness. After a detailed introduction relating to power system control and optimization, as well as network congestion control, we turn our attention to merging primary and secondary frequency control for the power grid. We present modifications in the conventional generation control using a consensus design approach while considering the participation of controllable loads. The optimality, stability and delay robustness of the redesigned system are studied. Moreover, we extend the proposed control scheme to (i) networks with more complexity and (ii) the case where controllable loads are involved in the optimization. As a result, our controllers can balance power flow and drive the system to an economically optimal operating point in the steady state. We then study a real-time control framework that merges primary, secondary and tertiary frequency control in power systems. In particular, we consider a transmission level network with tree topology. A distributed dynamic feedback controller is designed via a primal-dual decomposition approach and the stability of the overall system is studied. In addition, we introduce extra dynamics to improve system performance and emphasize the trade-off when choosing the gains of the extra dynamics. As a result, the proposed controller can balance supply and demand in the presence of disturbances, and achieve optimal power flow in the steady state. Furthermore, after introducing the extra dynamics, the transient performance of the system significantly improves. A redesign framework for network congestion control is developed next. Motivated by the augmented Lagrangian method, we introduce extra terms to the Lagrangian, which is used to redesign the primal-dual, primal and dual algorithms. We investigate how the gains resulting from the extra dynamics influence the stability and robustness of the system. Moreover, we show that the overall system can achieve added robustness to communication delays by appropriately tuning these gains. Also, the meaning of these extra dynamics is investigated and a distributed proportional-integral-derivative controller for solving network congestion control problems is further developed. Finally, we concentrate on a reverse- and forward-engineering framework for distributed control of a class of linear network systems to achieve optimal steady-state performance. As a typical illustration, we use the proposed framework to solve the real-time economic dispatch problem in the power grid. On the other hand, we provide a general procedure to modify control schemes for a special class of dynamic systems. In order to investigate how general the reverse- and forward-engineering framework is, we develop necessary and sufficient conditions under which an linear time-invariant system can be reverse-engineered as a gradient algorithm to solve an optimization problem. These conditions are characterized using properties of system matrices and relevant linear matrix inequalities. We conclude this thesis with an account for future research.
