Full textIn this work we performed an experimental study of the reactive wetting of vitreous carbon by reactive alloys in order to deepen the understanding of the wetting and interfacial reactivity phenomena for brazing applications. The systems chosen for this study are composed of a vitreous carbon substrate and two types of liquid alloys: low melting point alloys and medium melting point alloys. These alloys are composed of a non-reactive matrix (essentially Sn for low-melting point alloys and Ag-Cu-In for medium-melting point alloys) and a reactive solute forming a wettable carbide (Ti or Cr). The kinetics of the spreading of these alloys on the vitreous carbon is studied according to different parameters; temperature, surface finish of the substrate and reactive element content. The reaction products formed are characterized by SEM, TEM/ASTAR and XRD and the formation mechanisms of these products are proposed. Experiments on the optimization of homogeneous carbon brazing by medium melting point alloys are presented and other preliminary experiments for homogeneous and heterogeneous brazing by low melting point alloys are proposed, opening on the prospects of this thesis work

Full textThis study deals with high-temperature fuel cells that differ in the nature of the electrolyte: solid oxide (SOFC) and molten carbonates (MCFC). Despite the current maturity of these technologies, the high temperature degradation of materials slows down large-scale development. We mainly focused on the evolution of SOFC systems. This work investigates first the deposition of atomic layers (ALD) of cerium oxide doped with yttrium (known for its electrocatalytic properties at the anode) and their electrochemical characterization, in order to show the influence of their microstructure on the reactivity under a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen. The orientation of these layers showed a significant increase in their reactivity. In a second time we studied composite electrolytes oxide-carbonates and, more particularly, the evolution of their electrical behavior under different experimental conditions approaching the operation of the SOFC. We have been able to deduce the mechanisms governing the ionic conductivity under various atmospheres and highlighted the interest of a thin layer between anode and electrolyte in a single cell. In both cases, very significant results have been obtained allowing SOFC / MCFC hybrid systems, including highly oriented thin films, to be considered as competitors with existing devices

Full textThis work deals with the development of model adsorbents for the study of surface reactivity and the adsorption of metal cations at the Solid-Liquid interface. One of the selection criteria for such adsorbents is an adequate surface distribution of the electric charge and its evolution in aqueous media. With this objective in mind, mesoporous silicas (SBA-15) functionalized by the controlled insertion of heteroatom (Al, Zr, Ti) during synthesis were prepared with an effort to select carefully the reagents and to optimize the synthesis and post-treatment conditions (hydrothermal treatment, microwave, pH variation, catalyst use, scaling up of the optimized synthesis). The advanced characterization of these solids (morphology, texture, surface properties) allowed establishing the relationship between the synthesis conditions and the modulation of the properties in the final adsorbents. The characterization methods included the study of the porous network using nitrogen adsorption-desorption, the analysis of the solid structure by X-Ray diffraction and the chemical analysis, as well as the evaluation of the degree of heteroatom insertion, its distribution and the analysis of the nature of surface OH groups with the aid of Raman, UV-Vis, and FTIR spectroscopies. Finally, the adsorption-desorption techniques in conjunction with calorimetry making use of various molecular probes (NH3, Butanol, H+/OH-) in gas and liquid phase provided valuable information about the surface properties. Measurements of the adsorption of ions gave indications for the potential uses of these materials as adsorbents for the liquid waste decontamination

Full textWith the constant demand for reducing the feature size of transistors and that of the devices, which is guided by Moore’s law, 2D integration is no longer fit to adapt the growing demand. This has led to 3D integration of active devices with the help of Cu/Ni pillars capped with Sn based solder alloys. In the coming years, applications which demand high density interconnects (optoelectronic, microdisplays, IR-detectors, MEMS) will require an interconnect pitch of 10 µm and below. However, Cu/Ni/solder pillars have never been investigated in depth for such a small interconnection pitch. With reduction of interconnect dimension, the diameter of Cu/Ni pillar and solder alloy also reduces. Thus, it is feared that the intermetallic formation, which is the key phenomenon responsible for the bonding, may be problematic due to the reduction in size of Cu pillar capped with solder alloy. The thesis is dedicated to the metallurgical study and its characterization for very small interconnects (5 µm) at 10 µm pitch, where the main focus is given on the physio-chemical mechanisms of soldering between Sn-Ag solder alloy and Ni or Ni/Au layers. For the first time, the mechanism of solid-state interactions between Sn and Ni is studied in depth and also for the first time the Ni3Sn4 SLID (Solid-Liquid-lnterdiffusion) system as an interconnect has been investigated at these dimensions. Moreover, the mechanical and electrical properties as well as the thermal stability of these interconnects are studied. Interestingly, during the latter part of this study, Ni3Sn2 layer is observed during aging of the Ni/Ni3Sn4 system for low temperature (200°C)

Full textNew data on the interest of ruthenium doped lanthanum strontium chromite La1-xSrxCr1-yRuyO3δ (LSCrRu) as anode in ITSOFC are presented. Microwave synthesis of mixed oxides allowed shaping of half-cells and complete cells using sputtering and screen printing methods. LSCrRu methane reforming property had been studied in a mono-chamber system coupled with a mass spectrometer in collaboration with Institut de REcherche Hydro-Québec. Anode/electrolyte interfacial reactivity had been analysed using SIMS and XRD on half cells models after ageing under H2 at 800°C. This experiment gave the chemical composition of the film after treatment. Complete cells, tested under working conditions, highlighted, after selective dissolution of LSCrRu film, a microstructure modification at anode/electrolyte interface. XPS and SEM-EDX techniques did not show chemical reactivity
