Abstract:
After decades of successful expansion, The Reader's Digest Association's products were mature. With an average readership age for the flagship Reader's Digest magazine of 50.3 in 2004, efforts to develop new products had so far failed to entice a significant number of younger customers. Following a financial downturn in 1996, positive financial results remained illusive. Several major changes instituted by Thomas O. Ryder, CEO since 1998, including acquisitions, re-capitalization, restructuring and systematic re-engineering of the corporate culture, had proven mildly successful, but RDA, as well as the entire publishing industry, faced a persistent decline in profitability. Could RDA fulfill its stated mission to create “products that inform, enrich, entertain and inspire people of all ages and cultures around the world”, and could it do this by continuing to rely on the 80-year old Reader's Digest magazine?

Abstract:
Headlines play a crucial role in capturing reader attention in print media, often employing adjectives to create compelling content. Despite their importance, adjectives remain under-researched in comparison to other lexical categories, and their use in print media such as newspapers and magazines has received limited attention. This study aims to identify the types and functions of adjectives in The Star newspaper and Reader’s Digest magazine headlines, focusing on their semantic categories and syntactic functions based on the classification framework proposed by Biber, Conrad, and Leech. Data were collected through textual analysis of 20 print media samples, comprising The Star newspapers and Reader’s Digest magazines. Adjectives were sorted according to semantic categories and further classified based on their syntactic functions in headlines. A total of 651 adjectives were identified in 574 headlines from The Star newspapers, with 426 functioning as descriptors and the remaining 225 as classifiers. In 208 Reader's Digest magazine headlines, 228 adjectives were identified, of which 189 were descriptors and 39 classifiers. Most headlines in both print media predominantly featured emotive, miscellaneous, and size/quantity/extent descriptors. Regarding syntactic functions, 548 adjectives in The Star newspaper headlines functioned as attributive adjectives, followed by 76 as subject predicative, while in Reader’s Digest magazine headlines, 199 adjectives functioned as attributive adjectives and 17 as subject predicative. This research underscores the importance of print media-based analysis and provides valuable insights for future researchers interested in exploring the use of adjectives in print media.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relationship between reading, reading material and the reader, focusing specifically on the magazine Reader's Digest and its readers. The study aims to investigate these relationships in order to understand the discursive situations and conditions under which establishes norms and behaviors that produce practices and experiences related to reading. Therefore, the research was divided into two axes: the first consisted on analysis of 152 samples, predominantly from the 40s to 70 magazine widely circulated national - source publishing U.S. - Reader's Digest and the second focussed on interviews with twelve readers on that publication. The theoretical-methodological research is in the field of Cultural Studies, articulated in reading and readers studies. The work was structured around the following authors: Roger Chartier, Miguel de Certeau, Leonor Arfuch, Rosa Silveira, Michel Foucault, Stuart Hall, Jorge Larrosa, Emmanuel Fraisse, Jean-Claude Pompougnac, Martine Poulain, Zigmunt Bauman, and others. The study considers reading as everyday experience, understanding it as being that performed regularly, being immersed in its various dimensions and implicated in social, the cultural, the political and economic spheres. The narratives produced through interviews of this research enabled personal stories in his constituency, which adjusted its singular dimension are recognized as reading stories. To problematize the relationship between discourses, behaviors, situations, environments and reading materials - and especially the selections (1940-1970), emerged representations that could integrate analytical two topics: first, "Readers and readings," and second. "Texts and plots." In the first certain profiles were stabilisched which were called as readers identities, identified from daily experiences of reading. The second articulates other everyday experiences, as well as reading that are related to leisure, entertainment, emotions, learning, critical sense, etc.. Such experiences are marked by listening to the radio - especially the soap operas - and television. Other contemporary media, such as the Internet and social networks also appeared in the narratives of respondents. Conclusion of studies guide some understandings about possible relationships between the magazine and readers mode which are: the pleasure that reading causes; learning from / with reading, reading the various media, modes, gestures and spaces for reading, reading as a memory "place" leading to production of reading and stories "readings" and its relation with consumption. Finally, as some scenarios presented by the interviewees, have a library, even with magazines - some bound, seems to combine best practices with daily habits of reading, wich always sick for understanding and update. These aspects can be taken as evidence for some of the possible materiality of representation in contemporary reading.

Abstract:
This study had as its purpose to analyze the role, as a pro-West ideological vehicle, of the Brazilian version of the North American monthly newsmagazine Seleções do Reader\'s Digest (under the responsibility of the Ypiranga publishing house), between 1954 and 1964, the years of the so-called Cold War. Based on the political intolerance issue, the research has traveled in two ways. First, we selected those articles exploring anticommunist themes, in order to apprehend the components of the dispute between US and Soviet Union during the Cold War - as well as the representations that North Americans were building about their opponent, trying to justify the superiority of the western democracy and freedom in relation to the tyranny of communist regimes. The ostensive anticommunist campaign that oriented the Reader\'s Digest actions in different countries followed the same political configuration of the Cold War, that is to say: a \"sanitary cord\" promoted, by the US, around communist countries, denying efforts to the establishment of an effective peaceful coexistence. The political intolerance issue conveys necessarily to the question of rights, and so demands a deeper investigation of the juridical-political apparatus. Therefore, the second way we took in this research was the analysis of the relations between Seleções and the Brazilian press market, and its articulations with Brazilian parliament. The base for the analysis was the study of the Brazilian Congress Parliament Committee formed in July, 1963 to make inquiries about the performance of foreign news magazine in the country

Abstract:
As object of this research we selected twenty personal hygiene and beauty advertisements of the magazine: Seleções do Readers Digest. The main purpose of the study is to learn about the influence of this communication vehicle in the Fifties Brazilian imaginary, especially upon womans representations in the mentioned decade. To develop this work we used the Discourse Analysis Methodology (French School) and we went over 116 magazines with their innumerable advertisements, in order to select the most significant ones from personal hygiene and beauty categories. We reached the conclusion that advertising in Seleções worked as a dissemination and maintenance vehicle for the ideological propaganda of the American Way of Life. Following this idea, the magazines publicity intend to sell a single type of an ideal woman: queen of the house. Considering the period of history we refer to, at first glance it seems that existed some progress at the womans image, but a more careful observation revealed that it had been the traditional model of wife-mother-housewife which remained. In other words, in the maganizes advertisements women always appeared happy and satisfied, although, in fact, they were designed just to be an object for male consumption

Abstract:
Abstract Gas turbine-based combine cycle (GT-CC) economic evaluation is very important to bring together own equipment manufacturing companies (OEM’s) and power plant owners. The fuel cost & cost of electricity play the major role in economic evaluation which drives the decision during the bidding. The first portion of this paper encompasses the different cost analysis methods like Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and Pay Back Period (PBP) for different fuel costs and electricity prices. The second portion of the paper covers the delta cost benefits due to improvement in the combined cycle degradation GT-CC operators or customers are looking for the opportunities to control and minimize the degradation of the gas turbine power plant which directly impact the profitability. The customer or operator always monitor the plant performance to understand the life cost impact on performance degradation. This paper will help the customers & GT-CC OEM companies to focus on different area to reduce the unit cost of generating electricity, decide to move forward with the project during the proposal and improve the business at various regions based on fuel cost and global geographical political situations. Also, the reader can digest the benefits of improved degradation curve over the normal curve.

Abstract:
This demo takes the form of a challenge to the IJCAI community. A physical vault, secured by a 4-digit code, will be placed in the demo area. The author will publicly open the vault by entering the code on a touch-based interface, and as many times as requested. The challenge to the IJCAI participants will be to crack the code, open the vault, and collect its content. The interface is based on previous work on calibration-free interactive systems that enables a user to start instructing a machine without the machine knowing how to interpret the user’s actions beforehand. The intent and the behavior of the human are simultaneously learned by the machine. An online demo and videos are available for readers to participate in the challenge. An additional interface using vocal commands will be revealed on the demo day, demonstrating the scalability of our approach to continuous input signals.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the digital content of publications of one issue of the daily All-Ukrainian newspaper “Den” (March 13-14, 2020). The author aims to identify the main thematic groups of digital designations, as well as to consider cases of justified and unsuccessful use of digital designations. Applying the content analysis method, the author identifies publications that contain numerical notations, determines the number of such notations and their affiliation with the main subject groups. Finds that the thematic group of digital designations “time” (58.6% of all digital designations) is much more dominant. This indicates that timing is the most important task of a newspaper text. The second largest group of digital designations is “measure” (15.8% of all digital designations). It covers dimensions and proportions, measurements of distance, weight, volume, and more. The third largest group of digital signage is money (8.2% of all digital signage), the fourth is numbering (5.2% of all digital signage), and the fifth is people (4.4% of all digital signage). The author focuses on the fact that the digits of the journalist’s text are both a source of information and a catch for the reader. Vivid indicators give the text a sense of accuracy. When referring digital data to the text, journalists must adhere to certain rules for the writing of ordinal numbers with incremental graduation; submission of dates; pointing to unique integers that are combined (or not combined) with units of physical quantities, monetary units, etc.; writing a numerator at the beginning of a sentence; unified presentation of data. This will greatly facilitate the reader’s perception of the information.
