Using data from 1972, 1976 and 1980 national election surveys, the study supports previous research showing newspaper readership relates strongly to both political knowledge and activity. Although there is a strong relationship for newspaper readership, there is none for viewing political news on television. Finally, the strong relationship between newspaper readership and political participation remains at different levels of social class and education.

The article surveys the current state of research on Józef Wittlin’s works. It examines and summarizes evidence of the reception of his writings after 1989. Wittlin’s debut work, Hymny, is overlooked by critics, his essays await edition, and Sól Ziemi – Wittlin’s greatest achievement – unjustly became a forgotten novel.

Tabloid journalism has and continues to spark controversy. Scholarly considerations of tabloid journalism often question its contribution to democratic causes. However, little academic attention has been given to the question of how tabloids are understood and evaluated by their audiences. This study considered a range of audience responses to the Daily Sun by analysing the way some of its readers understand and evaluate it. The study examined the appeal of this popular tabloid to some Grahamstown readers. Reception analysis was employed to determine why these people read the Daily Sun. In par

It originated with the belief that religion (type) and degree of ingroup identification in the minority communities (stronger) would lead to greater newspaper avoidance and limit newspaper use primarily for information/public affairs, rather

This chapter focuses on Bernard Eisenschitz’s activities as a film critic and historian after he was expelled from Cahiers du cinéma in 1972. A member of the Parti communiste français throughout the 1970s, he initially wrote for the party’s cultural journal La Nouvelle Critique as well as communist publications such as Révolution and L’Humanité, and he exposed the readership of these organs to a wide array of films influenced by Cahiers’ own cinematic canon. Later, his lifelong passion for film history manifested itself in a prolific series of books, written with a meticulous care for detail, which included historical surveys of German and Soviet cinema and studies of the filmmakers Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang and Chris Marker.

Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 1 surveys manuscripts of Virgil’s works which were owned in England between c. 1400 and 1550. Through an analysis of readers’ annotations in these manuscripts, the chapter illustrates the continuities in Virgilian exegesis throughout the long fifteenth century. Much like Virgilian exegesis throughout the Middle Ages, fifteenth-century readers’ approaches to Virgil were structured by the pedagogic disciplines of grammar and rhetoric and the influence of the late antique commentator Servius. Although humanism dramatically increased the readership and canonical status of Virgil, it did not initiate a corresponding methodological change in exegetical practice. In many Virgil manuscripts owned in England, the most prominent signifiers of humanist influence are visual differences of script and decoration rather than the intellectual content of glossing. Beyond Virgil, this consistency of intellectual approach is representative of the major classical poets in this period.

Abstract:
Four other aspects of religious behaviour are reviewed, largely through claims in sample surveys. The frequency of private prayer, core to nearly all religions, has diminished; half the population stated they prayed weekly or more until the 1970s, but now it is under one-quarter. The Bible, the foundational document of Christianity, has become less central to its followers and wider society, with reductions in ownership, readership, knowledge, literalist beliefs, and influence on everyday life. Religious broadcasts have been marginalized by broadcasters and deserted by listeners and viewers. Surviving programmes no longer air at peak times and often assume the character of documentaries or entertainments. Religious observance of the major Christian festivals, Christmas and Easter, has shrunk. For the overwhelming majority of Britons, they have become purely secular holidays, to be spent on enjoyment and with family and friends, untroubled by churchgoing or even by thoughts about the events’ religious meaning.

Full text
Abstract:
Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913) had a shaping impact on modern phonology with two books. The Mémoire sur le système primitif des voyelles dans les langues indo-européenes (Memoir on the Primitive System of Vowels in the Indo-European Languages; 1879) was hastily composed in a compressed and jejune style that has always limited its readership. The Cours de linguistique générale (Course in General Linguistics; 1916) was produced posthumously, and has found a vast audience. While faithful to his teaching, it retains certain paradoxes he would have wanted to resolve, and is silent on matters he would likely have filled in. In addition, he published some twenty articles, several of which had an impact with regard to specific issues. This chapter traces the itinerary of Saussure’s phonological thinking from his earliest work to his final lectures. It then discusses certain widespread misunderstandings of his work, and surveys its heritage in modern linguistics.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses Dickens’s journalism and fiction of the 1830s and 1840s, and identifies the features of his urban style. It places his writing on tenancy in the context of comic theatre: namely, an influential tradition of lodging-house farce. The chapter surveys a number of plays and identifies the conventions of lodging-house farce, and it explores how Dickens adapts these materials to paint a vivid picture of life in London lodgings. The two-dimensional characters of the farce universe offer Dickens a reference point for theorizing the ‘flattening’ of identity in the city’s rented spaces. Dickens is especially interested in the landlady as a comic trope, social reality, and important figure in women’s history. Both the landlady and her lodgers provide Dickens with a set of tools to contemplate the nature of nineteenth-century authorship and readership: the lodging house, he discovers, is a literary space, and his early writing is witty and metafictional.
