According to PISA 2009 results (OCDE, 2010), the Reading literacy of Spanish teenagers is under the international average, and reading motivation and reading habits are highly related to reading performance. And ass research reveals that teachers can be very important for the development of reading pleasure (Gambrell, 1996; Guthrie, 2008) specially if they are reading models (De Neaghel & Van Keer, 2013), the objective of this study is to explore reading habit and reading motivation in preservice teachers. To do so, it has been used a reading habit questionnaire for university students (Larrañaga & Yubero, 2005) and the reading motivation scale develop for PISA 2009 (OCDE, 2010) with 433 Education undergraduates of the University of Castilla-La Mancha. Results confirm the significant association between reading habits and reading motivation. However, while a high proportion of the participants declare high or very high intrinsic reading motivation, very feware frequent readers. In addition, differences in reading motivation and reading habit depending on the course were not found.Implications of the discrepancies found between what future teachers say and do as readers are discussed.

Abstract:
The article characterizes Peirce’s concept of habit as a major contribution to a Peircean concept of preconceptuality, first, in relation to its function in the sign process, and second, in relation to other concepts of preconceptuality in cultural studies. Hans-Georg Gadamer’s notion of prejudice, Michel Foucault’s notions of the preconceptual and the dispositif, and Hans Blumenberg’s conception of metaphor all share certain key characteristics with Peirce’s notion of habit. The same comparison also highlights the fact that certain elements are missing from the current discourse on Peirce’s notion of habit: although any rendition of the concept of habit itself implicitly relies on a theory of historicity and of rule-association, these aspects only emerge explicitly in comparison with theories that more explicitly focus on such aspects. Another question raised in the context of such a comparison is the relevance of habit for theories of conceptuality. Peirce claims that descriptions of concepts are best realized through the description of the habits involved in them. A major part of a concept’s coordinative power lies with the habits associated with the concept. However, no systematic inquiry into the possibility of rendering actual habits more definitive in comprehension has been undertaken. An attempt is therefore made to remedy that situation by elaborating on those aspects of Peirce’s theory of habit relevant to a theory of “reading” habit, and to sketch an outline of such a theory.

Abstract:
Abstract Various kinds of collaborative learning can be applied in teaching English. One of them is a partner reading strategy which allows the students to read in pairs. This research aimed at exploring the significant enhancement of partner reading strategy on the eighth-grade students` reading habit and their reading comprehension. The quasi-experimental design was used in order to gather the data and the two classes were selected through cluster random sampling as the experimental and control group. The independent sample t-test result indicated that the comparison of students` reading habit and reading comprehension in the experimental and control group with sig. (2-tailed) or p-value (0.00) was less than the alpha value (0.05). It can be concluded that the use of partner reading strategy significantly enhanced the eighth-grade students` reading habit and their reading comprehension. The partner reading strategy made the teaching and learning process more joyful and meaningful so that it can be applied as one of the activities to promote reading habit and reading comprehension.

Abstract The study evaluated reading habit among students in Ekiti State Secondary Schools. The study specifically examined the frequency and time of reading among Junior Secondary School students in Ekiti State, the extent students read, how teachers’ attitudes affect their students reading habits, and ways reading habit can be improved. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted in this study. The population for the study consisted all of the Junior Secondary School Students in public secondary schools in Ekiti \central senatorial district. The size of the sample was 200 students drawn from ten public secondary schools using multistage sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire tagged Reading Habit Questionnaire (RHQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The responses obtained were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that most of the students rarely read as majority of them spend less than 2 hours daily on reading. They settle down to read only when given assignments or when examination was near. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended among others that parents should teach their children to start reading from an early age and should provide reading materials for them. Also, it was recommended that teachers should engage students in fervent reading and writing activities. Keywords: Reading, Habit, Library, Descriptive, Revealed Students Teachers

Abstract:
Ability to read is crucial as reading affects intellectual and emotional growth of an individual. Those who read well have more chances in widening their mental horizons and better opportunities of success. Hence, this paper is an attempt to understand the reading habits and attitudes of the students in the Faculty of Education in Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam. To collect the relevant data, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to 80 students. The questionnaire investigated the students’ reading habit, preferences, and attitudes towards reading. The research findings through quantitative analysis revealed that the students had an overall positive attitude towards academic and leisure reading as they read academically and leisurely daily or at least once a week. Apart from that, digital materials are considered better compared to printed texts when it comes to the students’ preference and its availability. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made to help improve students’ reading habits and attitudes. Having a national survey on Malaysian students’ reading habits is deemed necessary as it can document current trends (including the use of digital materials as a form of reading) and factors affecting students’ reading habits and attitudes so that more fruitful actions to improve students’ reading habits can be taken. Finally, teachers should also play a more significant role in motivating students to read as the findings yield that teachers are shown to have an impact on students’ reading habits and attitudes. This work is part of the project “Determining factors in the reading habits of secondary school students. A study from the variables of the educational context” (PR2017040), funded by the Own Research Plan of the University of Cádiz. The main objective is to know the reading consumption of Spanish teenagers. Specifically, the consumption of analog reading of students of 1st year of Compulsory Secondary Education in Spain is studied. A sample of students from the province of Cádiz (n=664) and from other Spanish provinces (n=192) responded to a questionnaire about their reading habits. It allowed, in the first instance, to determine if informants enjoy reading and, later, to gather information about what and in what format they read, the criteria on which they are based to choose their readings, how much time they dedicate to read and where they get their readings. The results indicate that this sector of the population prefers reading adventure books, chooses books by subject, reads more during holidays and uses their own books. However, it is confirmed that the development of the reading habit is still a subject to pass.

Abstract:
Future teachers will have to develop the reading habit in their students, as this is an essential factor in schoolchildren. The lack of reading motivation among young people and the need to have it in order to transmit it has been evidenced. Young people often prefer to spend their leisure time using alcohol and other drugs rather than reading books for pleasure. The factors that influence reading motivation are varied, but the objective of this research work focuses on establishing the relationship between reading motivation and the problematic use of alcohol and other drugs in future teachers of Preschool and Primary Education. A total of 178 subjects among university students were recruited (56.6% girls). The ages ranged from 18 to 34 (M = 21.59, SD = 3.52). The first scale used was the MULTICAGE CAD-4 for behavioral addiction together with a Scale for Characterizing Motivation for Academic Reading (EMLA). The results of the study indicate that those young people who were more involved in the consumption of alcohol and drugs had a lower reading habit. Likewise, the study also reveals significant mean differences in reading motivation based on gender and age. This shows the need to enact healthy habits from the university related to increasing reading motivation and promoting the reading habit in future teachers.

Abstract:
The aims of the study are threefold. The first is to investigate the reading attitudes toward first language (L1) and second language (L2) in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The second aim is to find out the correlation between both variables. The last objective of the study is to find out the contribution of L2 reading attitude toward reading achievement. This study involved two sets of questionnaires adapted from Yamashita (2004) and Mikami (2016) and 177 freshmen, sophomore and junior English language education department students. The data revealed that means of reading attitude toward L1 and L2 are not significantly different with 2.60 and 2.65 respectively, and that reading attitude in L1 is strongly correlated with reading attitude in L2 (r = 0.637). An interesting finding of the present study pointed out that although students have positive attitude in L2, it does not automatically motivate them to spend their time reading. External factors such as teachers and specific reading programs both in L1 and L2 seem to play bigger roles in shaping students reading attitudes. Pedagogical implications are also discussedKeywords: Reading attitude in L1; reading attitude in L2; reading habit; external factors.

Abstract:
Reading plays an important role in widening knowledge and learning languages, but it is also a challenge. Although Vietnamese learners often get higher marks in English reading tests in comparison to other skills, students low motivation to read and their lack of general background knowledge are obvious. This presentation introduces News Report, a blended Extensive Reading - Intensive Reading activity. The process is consisted of four stages: choosing news, summarizing, making a glossary and presenting. The activity is designed with an aim of establishing the reading habit for learners to widen their knowledge and learn the target language simultaneously. As observed, it is unlikely to formulate the reading habit this way but it helps to guide students how to read effectively on their own. Participants will learn a multi-purpose reading activity and know how to apply it on their own or in their classroom.

Abstract:
Reading is one of the activities known to give a lot of benefits to readers. In the context of university students, reading can improve their academic performance. However, literature indicated that students read-only to pass their examination and not for pleasure and acquiring knowledge. The study reported in this paper investigated the reading habit and reading attitudes among students in the research university library in Malaysia. It is believed that positive reading attitudes towards education materials or non-education materials lead to positive reading experiences, which also lead to higher academic performance. A descriptive study used questionnaires as an instrument of a quantitative method. Convenience sampling was employed and 400 respondents from four research university status libraries were selected. Moderate levels of reading attitude were obtained from the result of the study, in which several variables produced a significant relationship in the reading attitude (education background and favorite activities during leisure time). The findings of this study have shown the behavior of academic library users in terms of reading habits, reading attitudes, and selection of reading materials. Several suggestions such as providing a variety of reading material (sense of humor and humanities, public figures and tv personalities) and reading encouragement activities have been suggested. This study provides useful inputs to the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in constructing effective strategies to cultivate reading habits among reluctant readers in public universities.
