Abstract:
Scientific models are abstractions that aim to explain natural phenomena. A successful model shows how a complex phenomenon arises from relatively simple principles while preserving major physical or biological rules and predicting novel experiments. A model should not be a facsimile of reality; it is an aid for understanding it. Contrary to this basic premise, with the 21st century has come a surge in computational efforts to model biological processes in great detail. Here we discuss the oxymoronic, realistic modeling of single neurons. This rapidly advancing field is driven by the discovery that some neurons don't merely sum their inputs and fire if the sum exceeds some threshold. Thus researchers have asked what are the computational abilities of single neurons and attempted to give answers using realistic models. We briefly review the state of the art of compartmental modeling highlighting recent progress and intrinsic flaws. We then attempt to address two fundamental questions. Practically, can we realistically model single neurons? Philosophically, should we realistically model single neurons? We use layer 5 neocortical pyramidal neurons as a test case to examine these issues. We subject three publically available models of layer 5 pyramidal neurons to three simple computational challenges. Based on their performance and a partial survey of published models, we conclude that current compartmental models are ad hoc, unrealistic models functioning poorly once they are stretched beyond the specific problems for which they were designed. We then attempt to plot possible paths for generating realistic single neuron models.

Abstract:
Craniosynostosis is a premature fusion of cranial sutures, and it requires surgery to decrease cranial pressure and remodel the affected areas. However, mastering these procedures requires years of supervised training. Several neurosurgical training simulators have been created to shorten the learning curve. Laboratory training is fundamental for acquiring familiarity with the necessary techniques and skills to properly handle instruments. This video presents a novel simulator for training on the endoscopic treatment for scaphocephaly and trigonocephaly, covering all aspects of the procedure, from patient positioning to performing osteotomies. Abstract:
Abstract The domestic interior plays a significant role in realistic fiction and in 19th-century bourgeois life. The development of conventions for describing interiors in the novel coincides with the historical appearance of elaborately decorated parlors and with the feminization of domestic space. Both middle-class interiors and realistic fiction are characterized by a proliferation of detail, and their stylistic similarity can be mapped onto the emergence of a commodity culture. The fictive rhetoric of materiality and identity reflects complex relations of gender, property, and signification in the social world. (Cultural criticism; literary criticism; gender studies)

Abstract:
In 1933, a twenty-five-year-old writer named Richard Sullivan articulated for himself the qualities a novel should have. In a “Record of Work Begun and Ideas for Stories,” 1932-1933, he wrote:Let all be adoration. 9-14-33a novel must be—?American—constantly; of course, naturally.Scope—heights to depths; and length also: a lifeReligious—naturally; how else?Bitter—like life; intermittently. When he wrote these words, Sullivan had not yet published a novel; the publication of his first short story in a national magazine was still three years away. He eventually published six of his novels and dozens of short stories while teaching English at the University of Notre Dame from 1936 to 1974. Few people have heard of him or his work, and, at first glance, his life looks commonplace, even prosaic—he never lived farther than one hundred miles from his birthplace and seldom traveled; he taught at the same place, largely the same courses, for thirty-eight years; he wrote and published for almost forty years, coming tantalizingly close to major success, which nonetheless always eluded him.

Abstract:
Validating a 3D indoor radio propagation model that simulates the signal strength of a wireless device can be a challenging task due to an incomplete or a faulty environment model. In this paper, we present a novel method to simulate a complete indoor environment that can be used for evaluating a radio propagation model efficiently. In order to obtain a realistic and robust model of the full environment, the OctoMap framework is applied. The system combines the result of a SLAM algorithm and secondly a simple initial model of the same environment in a probabilistic way. Due to this approach, sensor noise and accumulated registration errors are minimised. Furthermore, in this article, we evaluate the merging approach with two SLAM algorithms, three vision sensors, and four datasets, of which one is publicly available. As a result, we have created a complete volumetric model by merging an initial model of the environment with the result of RGB-D SLAM based on real sensor measurements.

Abstract:
In many Arab countries, where colonial rule was replaced by local authoritarian, often corrupt, regimes, popular discontent with the living conditions under the new government has produced a kind of nostalgia for the colonial past. This nostalgia is well observed in today’s Aden (Republic of Yemen), which was a British colony from 1839 until 1967. In the middle of the 20th century, Aden was the most prosperous city on the Arabian Peninsula and one of the busiest seaports in the world. This article examines how this nostalgia is manifested in modern Yemeni literature, namely in three novels: Three Midnighters (1993) by Sa‘id Awlaqi, Adeni Incense (2014) by Ali al-Muqri, and Steamer Point (2015) by Ahmad Zayn (Zein). In the novel Three Midnighters, which takes place in the late 1980s, the allegory of Aden Colony is a cultural club, whose activities are remembered by the characters. The main characteristics of that club were its openness to all people, its atmosphere of freedom of thought, freedom of expression, mutual respect of its members, prosperity, love, and fun. In Adeni Incense, Aden Colony also resembles a wonderful club. The members of this club, that is, the characters of the novel, live in harmony, love, and prosperity — until evil external forces begin to destroy this club. The lack of realistic details in the depiction of the city and its inhabitants allows the reader to perceive the novel as allegorical rather than realistic. In Steamer Point, Aden Colony does not appear as a wonderful club, since the novel is written in a completely realistic manner. Nevertheless, Aden in the novel has two important features: the economic prosperity and peaceful coexistence of representatives of different cultures and different identities. It is these features of the city that one of the main characters, a sincere admirer of the British, is afraid to lose as a result of the British withdrawal.

Abstract:
The rise and development of English novel, like any other phenomenon in literature, can be seen as a part of a history or the process of the individual development. Romantic novels are non-realistic and considered as the aristocratic literature of feudalism. They are non-realistic in sense that their underlying intention is not to help people cope in a positive way. These novels, express and recommend the attitudes of the aristocratic class to which it was ideally supposed to sustain. The genre, developed, however, as a reaction to the aristocratic romance, and grows with the middle class a new art form that centres on a new middle class values, rather than aristocratic patronage. Thus the period after the Restoration of the 16th to 17th century opened up other discourses, thereby breaking the frontier by allowing social mobility and making female writing possible. This allowed Jane Austen to write on realistic and naturalistic themes as morality, religion, captalism, etc. and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is its fine example.

Full text
Abstract:
Motion-synthesis problems arise in the creation of physically realistic animations involving autonomous characters. Trpically characters are required to perform goal tasks, subject to physical law and other constraints on their motion. Witkin and Kass (1988) dubbed this class of problems “Spacetime Constraints“ (SC) and presented results for specific problems involving an articulated figure. Their approach was based on a procedure for the local optimization of an initial approximate trajectory supplied by the user. Unfortunately, SC problems are typically multimodal and discontinuous, and the number of decision alternatives available at each time step can be exponential in the number of degrees of freedom in the system. Thus, constructing even coarse trajectories for subsequent optimization can be difficult. We present an algorithm that constructs such trajectories de novo, without directive input from the user. Rather than use a time-series representation, which might be appropriate for local optimization, our algorithm uses a stimulus-response model. Locomotive skills appropriate for the given articulated figure are acquired through repeated testing of (simulated) reality. Our initial implementation, which chooses stimulus-response parameters using a parallel genetic algorithm, succeeds in finding good, novel solutions for a test suite of SC problems involving unbranched 2-D linkages.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper poses the question of how the beginning of a narrative may (or may not) imply a generic frame. More precisely, the objective is to examine the way in which the given narrative mood (perspective, type of discourse) and the initial narrating instance (or narrative situation) relate to generic expectations. Specific attention is given to cues of realism in the openings of nineteenth-century European novels. The discussion critically assesses F. K. Stanzel’s (A Theory of Narrative) and Philippe Hamon’s (“Un discours contraint”) assumptions about the way in which initial narrative choices might identify the genre of the text. Both Stanzel and Hamon, in their differing ways, over-emphasise the generic implications of the narrative mode. The crucial point of distinction for Stanzel in this regard is the reflector mode. More specifically, he argues that an initial figural narrative situation could be considered conspicuously fictional. Hamon, in turn, highlights the question of novelistic conventions in realistic discourse, one generic marker of which is what he calls the “narrative concretization (alibi) of the performance of the discourse,” such as the strategy of delegating the narration to a narrator-character at the beginning of the novel. It is maintained in this paper that although novelistic beginnings cannot determine the text’s fictionality or genre by their narrative mode alone, the narrative perspective and situation in the opening can evoke, in connection with other potential markers, such as perspective, personal pronouns, verb tense, peritexts, and their combined rhetorical function, generic expectations that shape the reader’s understanding of the text. Paul Valéry’s famous mock-novelistic beginning “The marquise went out at 5 o’clock” is used as a point of reference in the discussion, and representative examples of “realistic” beginnings are drawn from Charles Dickens, Émile Zola and contemporary literature.

The article outlines the main trends of development of the newest Ukrainian novel, its achievements and genre searches of the last decades. Increased interest of prose writers in historical subjects, documents, biographies has been noted, so the matrix of the historical novel is modified, history is artistically reproduced both as a private destiny of man, and as a hero, and as a trauma and as a game. At the same time, new psycho-biography novels, techno- and psychotriller novels, quotation books, retro-detectives are emerging for Ukrainian literature, and the genre of dystopia is being activated. The boundaries between mass and elitist literature are blurred, postmodern practices of writing are fading away, while realistic, romantic, even sentimental accents in the image of the past and present are intensified.

Abstract:
Abstract Studies of the regenerating hematopoietic system have led to the definition of many of the fundamental principles of stem cell biology. Therapies based on a range of tissue stem cells have been widely touted as a new treatment modality, presaging an emerging new specialty called regenerative medicine that promises to harness stem cells from embryonic and somatic sources to provide replacement cell therapies for genetic, malignant, and degenerative conditions. Insights borne from stem cell biology also portend development of protein and small molecule therapeutics that act on endogenous stem cells to promote repair and regeneration. Much of the newfound enthusiasm for regenerative medicine stems from the hope that advances in the laboratory will be followed soon thereafter by breakthrough treatments in the clinic. But how does one sort through the hype to judge the true promise? Are stem cell biologists and the media building expectations that cannot be met? Which diseases can be treated, and when can we expect success? In this review, we outline the realms of investigation that are capturing the most attention, and consider the current state of scientific understanding and controversy regarding the properties of embryonic and somatic (adult) stem cells. Our objective is to provide a framework for appreciating the promise while at the same time understanding the challenges behind translating fundamental stem cell biology into novel clinical therapies.

Abstract:
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are seen as a safe and cost-effective platforms for performing a myriad of underwater missions. These vehicles are equipped with multiple sensors which, combined with their long endurance, can produce large amounts of data, especially when used for video capturing. These data need to be transferred to the surface to be processed and analyzed. When considering deep sea operations, where surfacing before the end of the mission may be unpractical, the communication is limited to low bitrate acoustic communications, which make unfeasible the timely transmission of large amounts of data unfeasible. The usage of AUVs as data mules is an alternative communications solution. Data mules can be used to establish a broadband data link by combining short-range, high bitrate communications (e.g., RF and wireless optical) with a Delay Tolerant Network approach. This paper presents an enhanced version of UDMSim, a novel simulation platform for data muling communications. UDMSim is built upon a new realistic AUV Motion and Localization (AML) simulator and Network Simulator 3 (ns-3). It can simulate the position of the data mules, including localization errors, realistic position control adjustments, the received signal, the realistic throughput adjustments, and connection losses due to the fast SNR change observed underwater. The enhanced version includes a more realistic AML simulator and the antenna radiation patterns to help evaluating the design and relative placement of underwater antennas. The results obtained using UDMSim show a good match with the experimental results achieved using an underwater testbed. UDMSim is made available to the community to support easy and faster evaluation of underwater data muling oriented communications solutions and to enable offline replication of real world experiments.

Abstract:
Network traffic is believed to have a significant impact on network performance and is the result of the application operation on networks. Majority of current network performance analysis are based on the premise that the traffic transmission is through the shortest path, which is too simple to reflect a real traffic process. The real traffic process is related to the network application process characteristics, involving the realistic user behavior. In this paper, first, an application can be divided into the following three categories according to realistic application process characteristics: random application, customized application and routine application. Then, numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the effect of different applications on the network performance. The main results show that (i) network efficiency for the BA scale-free network is less than the ER random network when similar single application is loaded on the network; (ii) customized application has the greatest effect on the network efficiency when mixed multiple applications are loaded on BA network.

Abstract:
Virtual walk through can be widely applied in many industries such as virtual environment construction, history heritage conservation and scenic site exhibition etc. This paper proposes a more convenient and efficient approach to create realistic virtual walk through from catadioptric omni-directional images via view synthesis technique. Our innovation mainly lies in three aspects: omni-directional image preprocessing, image rectification and novel view interpolation. Acquisition and unwarping of omni-directional image are discussed firstly. Then, for specialty of cylindrical panoramic imaging, epiline-sampling method is adopted for rectification, which samples reference images along epilines as much as possible grounding on epipolar geometry. In this way, it can detract the rectified images from image deformation and resolution degeneration, which usually take place due to perspective transformation when using some other algorithms. As to novel view generation, a corresponding interpolation algorithm is developed. Pixels on novel view are formulated according to the cylindrical panoramic imaging model. Experiments carried out on both synthetic and real scene are given at the end of this paper, with a demonstration of the method's application in realistic virtual walk through.

Abstract:
Computational modeling has been promulgated as a means of optimizing artificial bone tissue culturing ex vivo. In the present report, we show, as a proof-of-concept, that it is possible to model the exact microenvironment within the scaffolds while accounting for their architectural complexities and the presence of cells/tissues in their pores. Our results clearly indicate that image-based modeling has the potential to be a powerful tool for computer-assisted tissue engineering.

Abstract:
AbstractThe development of materials and devices at the nanoscale presents great challenges, from synthesis to assembly to characterization. Often, progress can only be made by complementing experimental work with electronic-structure modeling, harnessing the efficiency, predictive power, and atomic resolution of density functional theory to describe molecular architectures exactly at those scales (hundreds or thousands of atoms) where the most promising and undiscovered properties are to be engineered. Some of the next-generation technologies that will benefit first from first-principles simulations encompass areas as diverse as energy and information storage and retrieval, detection and sensing of biological and foreign contaminants, nanostructured catalysts, nanomechanical devices, hybrid organic-inorganic and biologically inspired materials, and novel computer technologies based on integrated optical and electronic platforms. This article reviews some of the recent successes and insights gained by electronic-structure modeling, ranging from carbon nanotubes to semiconducting nanoparticles, quantum dots, and self-assembled monolayers.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present a novel physically-based method for curve deformation. It is an energy-based method considering stretching energy, bending energy and twisting energy of the curve. By combining the space deformation and energy-based technique, the curve deformation is converted into an optimization with linear constraints. Experimental results illustrate that the presented model is a shape-preserving method, which can produce realistic curve deformation.
