Abstract:
The Issue of „ Timeless” Nature of the Rules of the Roman Law. Remarks in the Discussion on „the New European Legal Culture”SummaryWith in the scope of a discussion on the new European private law opinions regarding the need for a realist revolution are formulated, which would aim at conquering its formal systematics and dogmatic character. From this perspective the references to Roman law are criticised in relations to establishing an extranational private law. They are called neo-pandectism and qualified as dogmatic trends in the European private law.Referring to that discussion I ask in the article whether the realistic thinking about law allows to ignore the durable rules originating from the Roman law. While presenting the characteristics of the realism of the Roman jurists above all I indicated the conviction of the existence of rules that were primary to law, which should be taken into account in the lawyers’ evaluations.I voiced an opinion that seeing the durability of some of the Roman rationes decidendi there is no point in discussing the references to the Roman tradition in the context of the dispute between the realism and formalism but as an element of a dispute regarding the issue what the realistic thinking about law is.On the basis of the used sources I formulated a conclusion that the realistic thinking about law does not allow to ignore the reflection on the durability of the rules originating from the Roman law when we assume that the basis of the reasonable actions of the law-making bodies as well as the bodies which apply the law should be requirements of practical reasonableness, which have a primary nature to law

Abstract:
The nature of Roman contact with Ireland has long been a matter of debate. This paper first examines why a Roman invasion of Ireland was never a realistic option, primarily because of the failure to complete the conquest of Scotland. It then considers the evidence and parallels for the various mechanisms by which Roman artefactual material found its way to Ireland, concluding that the most important were trade contacts with Roman merchants, continued kinship links with western Britain and financial subsidies from Rome to help maintain peace on the northern frontier.

Abstract:
The article outlines the main trends of development of the newest Ukrainian novel, its achievements and genre searches of the last decades. Increased interest of prose writers in historical subjects, documents, biographies has been noted, so the matrix of the historical novel is modified, history is artistically reproduced both as a private destiny of man, and as a hero, and as a trauma and as a game. At the same time, new psycho-biography novels, techno- and psychotriller novels, quotation books, retro-detectives are emerging for Ukrainian literature, and the genre of dystopia is being activated. The boundaries between mass and elitist literature are blurred, postmodern practices of writing are fading away, while realistic, romantic, even sentimental accents in the image of the past and present are intensified.

Abstract:
The Great Temple of Bel in Palmyra was a unique edifice which had blended the well established lines of Greco-Roman architecture with the art and taste of the Orient. With the gilded bronze capitals of its 41 Corinthian columns it was the product of enormous effort and budget. It was the gem of a remarkable epoch of wealthy Palmyra and mighty Roma. With its splendidly decorated adyta ceilings it became a source of inspiration and imagination for Western architecture and decorative arts. While continuing to captivate the World, it was leveled and vanished as a grim result of conflict based vandalism. The aim of this work is to piece together this, the most eloquent and stupendous monument of the Roman East, from its ruins and reconstruct it as it was once extant. Its loss is irreplacable, but its photo-realistic reconstruction can offer some solace by waking the memories of the great temple as in the past. The lost reality of the Great Temple of Bel is revived here by digitally constructing its “ghost images".

Abstract:

AbstractSelective attentions to “normative” Jewish archaeological materials and exclusions of ambiguous or complex evidence from Jewish archaeological compendia have diverted attention from those artifacts that might otherwise have yielded more productive observations about the cultural ranges of ancient Jewish populations. Application of more critical approaches to the classification of archaeological evidence, contextual approaches for the analysis of archaeological materials, and the replacement of essentialistic or syncretistic cultural models with more realistic ones, yield vastly improved understandings of ancient Jewish archaeological materials, and, by extension, better articulated pictures of the continua between early Jewish and Christian cultural identities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) mission is expected to launch in the mid-2020s. Its weak lensing program is designed to enable unprecedented systematics control in photometric measurements, including shear recovery, point spread function (PSF) correction, and photometric calibration. This will enable exquisite weak lensing science and allow us to adjust to and reliably contribute to the cosmological landscape after the initial years of observations from other concurrent Stage IV dark energy experiments. This potential requires equally careful planning and requirements validation as the mission prepares to enter its construction phase. We present a suite of image simulations based on galsim that are used to construct a complex, synthetic Roman weak lensing survey that incorporates realistic input galaxies and stars, relevant detector non-idealities, and the current reference 5-yr Roman survey strategy. We present a first study to empirically validate the existing Roman weak lensing requirements flowdown using a suite of 12 matched image simulations, each representing a different perturbation to the wavefront or image motion model. These are chosen to induce a range of potential static and low- and high-frequency time-dependent PSF model errors. We analyse the measured shapes of galaxies from each of these simulations and compare them to a reference, fiducial simulation to infer the response of the shape measurement to each of these modes in the wavefront model. We then compare this to existing analytic flowdown requirements, and find general agreement between the empirically derived response and that predicted by the analytic model.

Abstract:
This papers purpose is to compare the female protagonist as a subject and reader in Madame Bovary, Watermelon and Bridget Jones´s diary. The aim is feministic, where Judith Butler’s concepts of subjectivity and performativity have been used besides the method of close reading. These novels are pioneering works of each genre; the realistic novel and chick lit. Emma Bovary loses her subjectivity and turns in to a passive object when she is desired and looked at by men. Instead dead objects gets animated, which produces an extremely objectifying portrait of Emma. This culminates with the depiction of her suicide. Surprisingly Emma’s position as a subject, if she ever has one, appears through her reading. The performativity of the texts gives her power and agency to try to change her life within the limits of the bourgeoisie marriage. The protagonists of Watermelon and Bridget Jones´s diary are two female subjects in a modern society, who loves reading. Despite their different opportunities to live fulfilling lives, as compared to Emma, they tend to objectify themselves in relationship to men. They also emphasize the importance of love and having a man in their life, which is according to the genre. Interpreted through Butler, an explanation could be that the power of submission not only sets the outer limits, it also influences our internal desires. These chick lit-novels also discuss literature and cultural hierarchy, where the protagonists tend to prefer popular literature. Watermelon also contains an opening for subversion, depicted by Claire’s achieved independency at the end of the novel, and through some gender-parodies. Most of all, these two chick lit-novels tend to reiterate and consolidate a traditional gender-order through their performativity, although ironizing over the same. Keywords: Reading, genre, realistic novel, chick lit, feminism, Judith Butler, subjectivity, performativity, Madame Bovary, Watermelon, Bridget Jones´s diary.

Abstract:
The category of the novel of the whom? includes novels written by novelists who are not strictly contemporaries of each other, such as Henry Miller, Paul Auster and Michel Houellebecq. These novelists suggest a problematics of speech, marked by contradictory and ambiguous referential indices. They compensate the uncertainty of these indices by the stability they lend to the characters and because they want to be realistic: they write their novels clearly in their time and make their characters witnesses of this time. This duality - uncertainty of the status of the speech and realism - explains that the realistic spatial and temporal framework are linked by unstable games of enunciation and identity. This justifies the category of the “novel of the whom?” and allows Henry Miller, Paul Auster and Michel Houellebecq to read a problematic, that of speech, of the times evoked by these novels

Full text
Abstract:
Although very different, the novels of the 1950s by Alain Robbe-Grillet and of the 1960s by Robert Pinget claimed to challenge the literary forms that the twentieth century has inherited from the previous century, including the description of Honoré de Balzac. We question here the linguistic modalities of this confrontation, as well as the literary ambiguity of this denial of inheritance. The relationship between the description as have practiced these two "New Novelists" and on the other hand the great realistic writers of the nineteenth century is considered here in a triple perspective: maintenance / defence - or not – of a textuality, which is prototypically based on meronymy ; the linguistic construction of a reality whose existence is suddenly uncertain ; the enunciative erasure and its aesthetic consequences. In a decidedly technical approach, the descriptions of the novels of and Robbe-Grillet and Pinget are systematically opposed to the canonical descriptions of Balzac, but also to some extent to Flaubert and Zola. Challenging the realistic protocol is indeed based both on a recovery and a refusal: the textual complexity, the denotative and referential confusion and the enunciative instability allow these two novelists to provide descriptions which can be considered hyperrealistic as well as antirealistic. Eventually, while acknowledging the radical difference between the two authors, the aim is to show how both writers have managed to develop a considerably new descriptive protocol that reflects the world as it is and as it escapes

This thesis researches numerous forms of utopia in several, primarilyliterary segments from complex and comprehensive opus of H. G. Wells, aswell as in several, primarily literary segments of not so comprehensive, butalso complex opus of G. Kosteljnik. The study consists of thirteen chapters. The first chapter is introductory, where the subject matter, aim andmethodology of the research are explained, and the most frequent notionsare considered: general fantasy and science fiction, and, above all, the mainnotion, utopia. Some light is being shed on its genesis, its characteristicsand its functions. In the second chapter, the factors for its emergence, existence anddisappearance are presented, along with exhaustive typology of utopias. The tird and fourth chapter deals with formation of creativepersonalities of H. Abstract:
Historically, literature dealing with the Roman military occupation in Britannia over the first four centuries AD did not address the experiences of individuals or communities. This chapter joins a growing body of scholarship that has turned to theories of identity—incorporating notions of agency, structure, practice, materiality, and the use and transformation of space/landscape—which assert that identity is a very complex and realistic concept with which to understand human interaction as it changes over time. The authors trace the long recursive trajectory of the identities of the original “barbarian” auxiliary soldiers who were permanently stationed in Hadrian’s wall forts along the northern frontier of Britannia, as their practices and interactions with native Britons in the vici transformed and in turn helped to transform the army and wider landscape. No longer the lowest-class soldiers, they became privileged Roman citizens with new identities that drew on Roman, British, and other genealogies.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the notions of capital, innovation, and investment in urban occupations during the Roman period, viewed through archaeological data. With regard to these three factors, it focuses not upon macroscopic changes in the entire technological system but on ‘microscopic’ variations in urban occupations, based on a thorough analysis of the chaînes opératoires involved in the various urban crafts and trades. Leaving aside the difficulty of any attempt to draw a realistic synthesis, it shows that the quantitative and qualitative diversity of shops and workshops should be understood as a performant indicator of the urban economy: when added together, the different forms of real capitalization would appear to be a generative force.

Abstract:
Recent approaches to Greek and Roman art unanimously and emphatically stress the character of images as visual and material ‘constructions’ (Bažant 1985; von den Hoff and Schmidt 2001). This concept is held by the most advanced, thoughtful and serious voices of art history, and it is applied to all kinds of figurative representation, from individual figures to multi-figured scenes, through all genres and periods of ancient art. Thus, Richard Neer sees Archaic statues as ‘signs’ to which the concept of likeness to real persons is fundamentally alien (Neer 2012: 110–12). François Lissarrague interprets scenes of a warrior’s departure on Athenian vases as non-realistic constellations of the Greek oikos (Lissarrague 1990: 35–53). Wolfgang Ehrhardt analyses the Alexander mosaic from Pompeii as a purely fictitious depiction of the historical battle between Alexander and Darius III (Ehrhardt 2008).

Abstract:
Mitchell himself confessed that he was vexed to a near-pathological extent by ‘horrors’ – incidences of human cruelty in past and present – which provided the emotional and ethical drive for his writing. This chapter explores the two novels that most acutely highlight this aspect of the author’s mindset. Image and Superscription, his bracing picaresque novel of Rebirth, is presented as an unsuccessful attempt to dramatise and come to terms imaginatively with mankind’s propensity for cruelty. While visceral scenes depicting human brutality in contemporary times are overstated, however, the graphic treatment of historical atrocities points forward to the success of Spartacus. The historical novel dealing with the legendary uprising of the slaves against the Roman Republic is adjudged a triumph in conception and execution. It is appraised as both a realistic account of an inspirational historical event and an emblem of revolutionary ardour. Further, Mitchell’s permeating humanism is productively allied with a deeper lying philosophical scepticism to sustain a sanguine vision of humankind’s destiny.

Abstract:
In this paper, the author examines a work of one of the most significant Croatian literary writers, Ante Kovačić, whose novel U registraturi (In the Registry Office) is considered by many literary critics and theoreticians to be the best writing of Croatian realism. It is an author who was not understood at the time when his work appeared, which is why the text was published in the form of a novel with a twenty-three year delay. Nonlinear composition of the text, elements of fantasy literature and innovative literary process in creating a fabula and sujet course of events confused literary critics as well as readership, which points to the fact that Ante Kovačić was treated for a long time as a peripheral author. In this narrative text, the misery and helplessness of peasants and their revolt against their feudal lords in Croatia are described, therefore the object of our analysis will be the characterisation of figures from various layers of society, with a particular focus on the “peripheral characters” of Kovačić’s prose. Using the term “peripheral characters” we will attempt to bring close those characters of subjugated peasants in relation to the feudal-capitalist social layer and thereby emphasise their role in the novel in relation to their fate. Unlike the characters of the peasants – Ivica Kičmanović (whom the social order turns into a lackey and scoundrel); Jožica Zgubidan (the personification of a poor person from Zagorje), Anica (a patriarchal girl with an angelic face); Miha; Perica; the neighbouring Kanoniks; and the Medonjićes – Kovačić brings us harsh, drastic images of moral vacillations in the city in which figures, distorted into caricatures, dominate. By contrasting the rural environment with the city life, the author is writing an “epopee of the village and city” in which the “peripheral characters” become tragic ones. These characters are the carriers of elements of “fantastic realism,” and their function is to show all the depravities of society and to announce the phenomenon of the innovative processes of narration familiar to authors of the modern literature. Finally, we come to the conclusion that Ante Kovačić made a step forward in relation to the generation of realists, with the peripheral position of his creation disappearing with the emergence of modern literary achievements, which ultimately gives the author and his work a polished place in Croatian literature.

Abstract:
In this paper we will analyze the personal choice of individuals, who chose peripheral life on the island which is their prison and their freedom at the same time. Though eager to do so, the protagonists of the novel, Mali and Draga, do not escape from the island. They are essentially prisoners of their own choice, from which they apparently try to escape, not escaping only from responsibilities and obligations that tie them to the island, that is, to nurturing a handicapped old women Madonna. In self-deprivation and oppression satisfying Madonna’s wishes, Mali voluntarily fulfills her desires, aware of the nonsense in which he dives, conscious of alienation, which he cannot resist. Although, at one point, Mali will pronounce all of his own disappointment, the reader will not accept it as the main hero’s awareness about the failure of life but she/he will rather “involve” in a postmodernist way in author’s thinking and his attitude towards the main character. The essence of the psychological lies not in the fact that the writer played with the possibility of rejecting the protagonist, but, on the contrary, enabled him to choose his path, which led him to the island, on which he remains. The bareness of life was reduced by the literary process to the final outcome of the earthly existence. Without coercion or request, just by rough realistic method, the writer points to the masculinity of the main character, who is firm, does not give up on his ideals, but at the same time remains a prisoner of his habits. With the abundance of biblical motifs and symbols, Slobodan Novak created the hero of the novel who grows out of the narrative events and who is not uniform, but in the given situations he changes, resisting, retreating or adjusting. In the atmosphere of the stagnant island an ironic and scathing prose was made, whose main protagonists accepted peripherality as a habit.

Abstract:
Purpose: The main goal of this research was to establish differences in self-assessment of preparedness of Greco-Roman wrestlers in different age groups before a competition. Methods: The sample of subjects consisted of Greco-Roman wrestlers (n=223) divided into three age groups (cadets n=76; juniors n=69; seniors n=78). Self-assessment of prepared-ness was determined immediately before oficial weighing (approximately 16 hours before oficial weighing) using a survey questionnaire on the Likert scale of 1 to 5. Descriptive sta-tistic parameters were present. The wrestlers’success was determined by analysis of oficial bulletin from national championships. The correlation between self-assessment of prepar-edness and success was determined by a linear regression analysis. Statistically significant differences between the groups were determined by the Mann-Whitney test. Results: Most cadets (35.5% of subjects) estimate that they are completely prepared for a competition comparing to juniors. Seniors and juniors carefully evaluated preparedness for a competition. Seniors (42.3% of subjects) estimate that they are somewhat prepared, while juniors (43.5% of subjects) estimate that they are highly prepared for a competition. Furthermore, results of linear regression indicate relation (R = 0.203; p = 0.002) between self-assessment and success of Greco-Roman wrestlers. In addition, statistically significant differences between cadets and juniors (p = 0.033) were confirmed as well as between ca-dets and seniors (p = 0.001) in variable self-assessment of preparedness for a competition. Conclusion: Statistically significant relation between self-assessment and success indicates that wrestlers with a high level of self-assessment have better success as well as self-confi-dence in wrestling competition. The differences between age groups of Greco-Roman wres-tlers in variable self-assessment of preparedness emphasize importance of realistic and achievable goals in young age groups of wrestlers. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustrations or giving up on practicing wrestling. Therefore, individual approach to the mental preparedness of young wrestlers before a competition is very important, especially setting and realization of achievable goals. In this way, positive experience from a competition will raise the level of self-confidence in young age wrestlers.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to provide answers to some questions of the archaeologists and leaders of cultural heritage agencies in charge of structures affected by structural problems and instabilities with emphasis on the Arles roman aqueduct in the South of France. The modeling is performed with NSCD discrete element method. The 3D geometric decomposition of the two structures is realistic and is obtained by a conversion from (DXF) CAO format to LMGC90 discrete element code which is dealing with the NSCD method. A comparison with continuous modeling shows the unique possibilities of discrete modeling to account for observed failure phenomena on the real structures.

Abstract:
The calculation of the entropy generation rate ds/dt in turbomachinery passages is a straightforward task once the velocity and temperature fields are known. The global entropy generation rate in the passage, dS/dt = ∫V(x,y,z)(ds/dt)dxdydz, is of course directly related to the cascade efficiency, but its functional dependence on the local characteristics of the flowfield is not immediately detectable: the left-hand side is a single-valued quantity that cannot, as such, be used as the objective function of an inverse design procedure (because a local modification of a single detail of the blade geometry invariably produces non-negligible effects on the entire flow domain). On the contrary, knowledge of the local entropy generation rate in each point of a channel provides immediate useful insight into the relative importance of the different sources of irreversibility in the process. There are numerous examples of the application of entropy generation maps as a diagnostic design tool, i.e., to locate problematic areas that demand for design “improvements”: these are, though, basically heuristic and intrinsically non-systematic approaches. On the other hand, the adoption of a functional based on the local entropy generation rates is difficult both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view, and there is no example yet of a blade profile optimization in which the objective function is ∫V(x,y,z)(ds/dt)dxdydz, to be minimized over the design domain V. This paper presents a rational derivation of the relationships between the local and global entropy generation and the local features of the flow, and illustrates them by means of two examples derived from applications developed in the last years by the Turbomachinery Group led by the author at the University of Roma 1. The merits and limits of the use of such a “local” approach are critically discussed, and in the Conclusions a procedure is proposed for the development of an inverse design approach based on a properly constrained objective function based on ds/dt: though quite intensive from a computational point of view, there are indications that such an approach may become feasible on realistic geometries in the near future.
