Abstract:
In this article, I counter persistent claims of big data revolutionising managerial decision making, by tracing the technological and cultural origins of data-based management in the United States back to the 1970s and 1980s using historical source materials from the trade magazine Datamation. I argue that innovations in database technology within this period – database management systems and the relational database model – shaped and reinforced a data-based mindset. This mindset, I demonstrate, is manifested in four interlinked concepts of data: data as asset, data as raw, data as reality, and data as relatable. These concepts, I argue, provide a basis for current associations of big data with ideological values of objectivity and truthfulness. The article contributes to a growing body of work in media and communication studies that deconstructs the ideological discourses facilitating big data’s unquestioned integration in the business world.

Abstract:
Data visualization is viewed as a significant element in data analysis and communication. As the data engagement becomes more and more complex, visual presentation of data does help users understand the data. So far, two-dimensional (2D) data visuals are often used for the data visualization process, but the lack of depth dimension leads to inefficient and limited understanding of the data. Therefore, the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) in data visualization was studied through the development of an AR Data Visualization application using E-commerce data. Machine learning models are also involved in the development of this AR application for the provision of data using predictive analysis functions. To provide quality E-commerce data and an optimal machine learning model, the data science process is carried out using the python programming language. The E-commerce data selected for this study is open data taken through the Kaggle Website. This database has 9994 data numbers and 21 attributes. This AR data visualization application will make it easier for users to understand the E-commerce data in-depth through the use of AR technology and be able to visualize the forecasts for sales profit based on the algorithm model "Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average" (ARIMA).

Abstract:
Object-relational technology provides a significant increase in scalability and flexibility over the traditional relational databases. The additional object-relational features are particularly satisfying for advanced database applications that relational database systems have experienced difficulties. The key factor to the success of object-relational database systems is their performance. This paper aims to review the promises of Object-Relational database systems, examine the reality, and how their promises may be fulfilled through unification with the relational technology. To investigate the performance implications of using object-relational relative to relational technology, the query-oriented BUCKY benchmark has been previously applied to an early object-relational database system, i.e., Illustra 97. This paper presents the results obtained from implementing and running the BUCKY benchmark on Oracle 10g. The results acquired from the work described in this paper are compared with the results obtained in BUCKY benchmark. This study throws light on the functionality of object-relational databases, where object-relational technology has made improvements but some limitations are identified as well. In general, the performance of relational supersedes that of object-relational database system.

The aim of this dissertation is to find out the effect of alterations on market value of he property, specifically apartments in concrete-block buildings. Evaluation is made chiefly on factors influencing layout. First of all brief information about the subject is given. Secondly market influences are determined for the purpose of eliminating them by differential index and unifying input data. Afterwards, market values of apartments with alternations are compared with ones without alternations from database. At the end of the thesis alternations are calculated and recovery of the costs are detected.

Abstract:
The submitted thesis focuses on establishing the extent of influence of material composition of selected segment of real estates (units) on their market price and price of the existing properties in the locality, including reasoning and experimental validation of market value (or market price) assessment methodology of the given property. It is indisputable that there are many subjective opinions and views of each individual assessor (of expert opinion) entering into the process of property assessment. Therefore it is necessary to “standardise” or rather unify, if possible, at least some input data in a way most likely preventing disproportions that are still a part of expert practise nowadays. The influence of material composition on the value (price) of the property, as for the relation to unit size, its locality and also its age and technical condition, is within this thesis verified first of all in computational phase of the assessment of the specific unit, when it in principle shows possible inaccuracy in assessing the final price of property, which should be avoided by a proper expert assessment. Practical impact and use of the influence of material composition is applied within the comparative method as one of several assessment methods that can be employed in establishing (assessment) of market value of the property.

Abstract:
The main campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) has more than 120 buildings. The campus visitors face problems recognizing a building, finding a building, obtaining directions from one building to another, and getting information about a building. The exploratory development research described herein resulted in an iPhone / iPad software application (app) named VTQuestAR that provides assistance to the campus visitors by using the Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The Machine Learning (ML) technology is used to recognize a sample of 31 campus buildings in real-time. The VTQuestAR app enables the user to have a visual interactive experience with those 31 campus buildings by superimposing building information on top of the building picture shown through the camera. The app also enables the user to get directions from the current location or a building to another building displayed on a 2D map as well as an AR map. The user can perform complex searches on 122 campus buildings by building name, description, abbreviation, category, address, and year built. The app enables the user to take multimedia notes during a campus visit. Our exploratory development research illustrates the feasibility of using AR and ML in providing much more effective assistance to visitors of any organization.

Abstract:
Horrific experiences as a boy laborer prompted Jack London’s quest for—and public circulation of—factual data that is omnipresent in his fiction, essays, and lectures. His vast database ranged from newsprint accounts to reports of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. London’s zeal for factual authenticity aligns him with contemporary investigative journalists (the muckrakers) and with the Progressive movement in which political figures (notably Wisconsin’s Robert La Follette) and professionals in medicine, economics, law, religion and other fields who sought to reform US society by presenting the dire facts of political corruption, child labor, dangerous workplaces, starvation wages, slum housing, the injustices of the criminal justice system—all topics in London’s oeuvre. London adhered to contemporary Upton Sinclair’s maxim that the true purpose of fiction is “to alter reality.” He strategically compounded factual data with emotional appeals in his career as a foremost American public intellectual.

Abstract:
Abstract Process capability data (PCD) is used during design to assess manufacturability, allocate tolerances, and evaluate robustness. Process capability databases (PCDBs)1 have been developed by many design/manufacturing industries to capture their process capability and communicate it to the entire organization. While these databases are being used to monitor quality, they are not being effectively utilized by design. A survey of design and manufacturing companies was used to determine both how PCD is being used and the barriers preventing design from fully utilizing PCD. Two key barriers were identified: lack of a company-wide vision for PCD usage and poor communication between manufacturing and design. Management support, training, database population, common databases, and common indexing schemes were identified as solutions to these barriers.
