Abstract:
A text is a device conceived in order to produce its Model Reader. I repeat that this reader is not the one who makes the ‘only right’ conjecture. A text can foresee a Model Reader entitled to try infinite conjectures. The empirical reader is only an actor who makes conjectures about the kind of Model Reader postulated by the text. Since the intention of the text is basically to produce a Model Reader able to make conjectures about it, the initiative of the Model Reader consists in figuring out a Model Author that is not the empirical one and that, at the end, coincides with the intention of the text. Meyers, Tom. "The effect of the Reaset Approach on the autonomic nervous system, state-trait anxiety and musculoskeletal pain in patients with work-related stress: A pilot study." Bachelor's thesis, Dresden International University, 2016. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:14-qucosa-204179.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Work-related stress (WRS) is associated with musculoskeletal pain (MSP), changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and anxiety. Objective: To determine the feasibility of a follow-up study and treatment efficacy of the Reaset Approach on MSP, ANS and State-Trait anxiety. Methods: 15 subjects with WRS and MSP were assigned into 3 groups (Body, Head-Neck, Head-Neck-Body). Each group received a single 25 minute ‘Reaset Approach’ intervention. Heart rate variability (HRV), electro-dermal activity (EDA), State Trait Anxiety (STAI) and MSP were measured. Results: HRV parameters: SDNN increased in 13 of 15 subjects while SD1 and SD2 increased in 12 of 15 subjects. EDA reduced in 10 of 14 subjects. State Anxiety reduced in all subjects and Trait Anxiety reduced in 14 of 15 subjects. MSP reduced in all subjects after the intervention and were still lower three days afterwards. Conclusions: This pilot study determined that a follow-up study can ensue provided minor modifications are implemented and that the ‘Reaset Approach’ has an influence on the ANS, anxiety and MSP. Results do differ between groups. The intervention groups including the head and neck modalities demonstrated better results

Abstract:
This thesis brings aspects of research on human consciousness to bear on reader-response criticism. I believe that such an interdisciplinary approach has the potential to provide the theories I consider (and reader-response criticism in general) with a more specific and effective set of conceptual tools for understanding readers, reading processes, and response. In chapter one of this thesis I consider the precise ways in which approaches to consciousness may communicate with, and specify reader-response criticism. I offer perspectives on works by Stanley Fish (Is There a Text in This Class?), Wolfgang Iser (The Act of Reading), and Roland Barthes (Image, Music, Text) that foreground a common need for specific 'consciousness components.' I then offer some preliminary suggestions as to how these consciousness components might be integrated into the existing theories. I continue in chapter two to construct basic consciousness components for each of the above mentioned reader-response theories. I integrate Daniel Dennett's (Consciousness Explained) Multiple Drafts Model of consciousness into my discussion of Fish, John Searle's (The Mystery of Consciousness) concept of objective consciousness into my discussion Iser, and Richard Dawkins' (The Selfish Gene) concept of memetics into my discussion of Barthes. I conclude the thesis with a brief discussion of the ways in which textuality based approaches to interpretability redefine the distinctions between readers and texts in ways that are complimentary to my consciousness based approach.

Strahan, Esther Yodor, Wallace E. Jr Dixon, and J. Burton Banks. "Parenting With Reason: Evidence-Based Approaches To Parenting Dilemmas." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2009. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/189.

Full text
Abstract:
Sometimes it feels as though everybody has an opinion on how you should bring up your child – and no two people seem to agree on how it should be done for the best! Parenting with Reason cuts through the masses of confusing and often contradictory advice about parenting by providing hard evidence to back up the tough decisions all parents face. Unlike many self-help guides to parenting which are based on the opinion of one author, this book is based on many findings from scientific research, giving you a trustworthy, ‘evidence-based’ guide to help see your way through parenting dilemmas. Written by a clinical psychologist, a developmental psychologist and a doctor of family medicine, the book looks at pressing questions such as: 'What should I do when my child acts up?', 'How can I get my baby to sleep through the night?' and 'How do I begin to toilet-train my child?' The authors, who are also parents themselves, debunk common myths about parenting, such as the notion that a healthy baby needs to be able to breastfeed at will throughout the night, or the idea that children who are adopted need specialized counselling. They also cover issues such as how children might be affected by seeing violence on television, how a parent’s psychological health can affect their child, what the scientific evidence is for and against circumcision, and how divorce and adoption affect a child’s development. The end of each chapter gives you 'The Bottom Line', a handy summary of the key points of each issue. This book is ideal for new or prospective parents, and paediatricians, family health providers and anyone who works with children and their parents will also find the book’s objective, scientific approach useful in their work.

Marais, F., and S. Combrinck. "An Approach to Dealing with the Difficulties Undergraduate Chemistry Students Experience with Stoichiometry." South African Journal of Chemistry, 2009. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001499.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Chemistry for first year students has been identified by Tshwane University of Technology as one of the subjects with a low pass rate. It is apparent that students often memorize formulae and definitions, without understanding the underlying concepts required to work with abstract units of measure. We have found that the majority of students at this university are unable to balance reaction equations satisfactorily. They are also unable to predict the reaction yield, or identify limiting reagents. It is imperative that these and other related problems are overcome before any meaningful change to the high failure rate at first year level will be realized. All conventional forms of lecture presentation failed to make any significant impact on the success rate. Structured worksheets were developed and used, together with tactile models, to address the problems and the initial findings showed a marked improvement. It was discovered that the students’ problems originated from their inability to understand the meaning of subscripts and coefficients in chemical equations. The worksheets and the impact they have made on the students’ understanding of stoichiometry are shared in this paper.

Portelli, Terence. "A reader-response approach to the initial training of Maltese literature teachers." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1254/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis documents the development of nineteen student-teachers in becoming teachers of Maltese literature, initiated in a methodology study-unit over one academic year. Drawing on reader-response theories, and coupled with insights from reflective practice and assessment for learning, this study traces trajectories taken by student-teachers as they gradually move from a text- or subject-bound culture towards a more student- or response-centred approach. Methodologically, this thesis is an action-research project embracing a bricolage stance. The main analysis draws on the lecturer-researcher’s and the student-teachers’ experiences in a dialogical way. A number of reflective tasks were employed to make explicit the meandering thought processes that were taking place and shape during the duration of the study-unit. Different topics essential to any prospective teacher of literature were also critically examined. These issues were realised during a six-week block teaching practice, with some of the experiences collected in an ad hoc portfolio. Towards the end, six perspectives are analysed to illustrate broad themes and significant vignettes of what this transition entails. While mainly respecting traditional academic format, parts of the thesis are written in non-canonical genres, thus expressing an essentially exploratory, experimental approach.

In ASME 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2013-64930.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Hip arthroplasty requires the preparation of the acetabular cavity to allow a proper contact between the bone and the implant. It is essential to allow osseointegration and long-term stability of the implant. The aim of this study was to conduct experimental testing to evaluate the quality of reamed surfaces using a serrated blade acetabular reamer as compared to a conventional rasp reamer. Method of Approach: Reaming tests were performed on a computerized numerical control tools machine at a rotational speed of 250 rpm and 3 different penetration speeds: 0.20 mm/s, 0.55 mm/s and 0.90 mm/s. For each reamer, a complete semi-hemispherical hole was perforated in 7 polyurethane samples. The reamed surfaces were digitized with a three-dimensional high resolution (40 μm) self-positioning laser scanner to carry out a quantitative analysis of the surface quality. Results: Results demonstrated that the cutting edge and the penetration speed influence the quality of the reamed surface. The serrated blade was found to reduce surface irregularities (ranging between 0.19 mm to 0.21 mm for the conventional rasp and between 0.07 mm and 0.12 mm for the serrated blades), and to reduce inaccuracies on the reamed cavity diameter (0.13 mm ± 0.05mm for the rasps and 0.06 mm ± 0.03mm for the serrated blade). Conclusions: The use of such tool by the surgeon may influence the stability of the acetabular implant and reduce the risks of revision surgery.

Abstract:
The French ‘yellow vests’ movement is anything but an episodic protest movement. It questions both the liberal and the republican conception of political representation. The reason for this radicalism is that it shakes the foundations of a neo-capitalist order, for which shortterm financial sales have become more important than the long-term maintenance of the system itself. From the financial crisis of 2008, neoliberalism only seems to have learned that, despite everything, the model on which it is based holds up. This creates a profound crisis of legitimacy that reveals a break in political culture that no policy of consensus or even recognition can remedy. This essay examines the theoretical approaches that can take this phenomenon into account.

Abstract:
The Colombian financial system has not suffered major structural disruptions during these months of deep economic contraction and has continued to carry out its basic functions as usual, thus facilitating the economy's response to extreme conditions. This is the result of the soundness of financial institutions at the beginning of the crisis, which was reflected in high liquidity and capital adequacy indicators as well as in the timely response of various authorities. Banco de la República lowered its policy interest rates 250 points to 1.75%, the lowest level since the creation of the new independent bank in 1991, and provided ample temporary and permanent liquidity in both pesos and foreign currency. The Office of the Financial Superintendent of Colombia, in turn, adopted prudential measures to facilitate changes in the conditions for loans in effect and temporary rules for rating and loan-loss provisions. Finally, the national government expanded the transfers as well as the guaranteed credit programs for the economy. The supply of real credit (i.e. discounting inflation) in the economy is 4% higher today than it was 12 months ago with especially marked growth in the housing (5.6%) and commercial (4.7%) loan portfolios (2.3% in consumer and -0.1% in microloans), but there have been significant changes over time. During the first few months of the quarantine, firms increased their demands for liquidity sharply while consumers reduced theirs. Since then, the growth of credit to firms has tended to slow down, while consumer and housing credit has grown. The financial system has responded satisfactorily to the changes in the respective demands of each group or sector and loans may grow at high rates in 2021 if GDP grows at rates close to 4.6% as the technical staff at the Bank expects; but the forecasts are highly uncertain. After the strict quarantine implemented by authorities in Colombia, the turmoil seen in March and early April, which was evident in the sudden reddening of macroeconomic variables on the risk heatmap in Graph A,[1] and the drop in crude oil and coal prices (note the high volatility registered in market risk for the region on Graph A) the local financial markets stabilized relatively quickly. Banco de la República’s credible and sustained policy response played a decisive role in this stabilization in terms of liquidity provision through a sharp expansion of repo operations (and changes in amounts, terms, counterparties, and eligible instruments), the purchases of public and private debt, and the reduction in bank reserve requirements. In this respect, there is now abundant aggregate liquidity and significant improvements in the liquidity position of investment funds. In this context, the main vulnerability factor for financial stability in the short term is still the high degree of uncertainty surrounding loan quality. First, the future trajectory of the number of people infected and deceased by the virus and the possible need for additional health measures is uncertain. For that reason, there is also uncertainty about the path for economic recovery in the short and medium term. Second, the degree to which the current shock will be reflected in loan quality once the risk materializes in banks’ financial statements is uncertain. For the time being, the credit risk heatmap (Graph B) indicates that non-performing and risky loans have not shown major deterioration, but past experience indicates that periods of sharp economic slowdown eventually tend to coincide with rises in non-performing loans: the calculations included in this report suggest that the impact of the recession on credit quality could be significant in the short term. This is particularly worrying since the profitability of credit establishments has been declining in recent months, and this could affect their ability to provide credit to the real sector of the economy. In order to adopt a forward-looking approach to this vulnerability, this Report presents several stress tests that evaluate the resilience of the liquidity and capital adequacy of credit institutions and investment funds in the event of a hypothetical scenario that seeks to simulate an extreme version of current macroeconomic conditions. The results suggest that even though there could be strong impacts on the credit institutions’ volume of credit and profitability under such scenarios, aggregate indicators of total and core capital adequacy will probably remain at levels that are above the regulatory limits over the horizon of a year. At the same time, the exercises highlight the high capacity of the system's liquidity to face adverse scenarios. In compliance with its constitutional objectives and in coordination with the financial system's security network, Banco de la República will continue to closely monitor the outlook for financial stability at this juncture and will make the decisions that are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the economy, facilitate the flow of sufficient credit and liquidity resources, and further the smooth operation of the payment systems.
