Abstract:
A text is a device conceived in order to produce its Model Reader. I repeat that this reader is not the one who makes the ‘only right’ conjecture. A text can foresee a Model Reader entitled to try infinite conjectures. The empirical reader is only an actor who makes conjectures about the kind of Model Reader postulated by the text. Since the intention of the text is basically to produce a Model Reader able to make conjectures about it, the initiative of the Model Reader consists in figuring out a Model Author that is not the empirical one and that, at the end, coincides with the intention of the text. Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses the implementation of the reader-response theory and approach in the context of a literature course (English Literature 1) taught to students enrolled at the Department of English Language and Literature, who are preparing to be future teachers of English language. This article aims to examine the benefits and values of the reader-response theory applied in the described context, as well as potential drawbacks. The basic postulates of the reader-response theory and reader-response approach in class emphasize the crucial role of the reader on the literary and aesthetic experience when reading a literary text. The reader’s way of understanding and perceptions of a literary text, as well as the experience of the reader, influence the interaction between the reader and a text. This interaction contributes to the development of interpretation of the text and reconstruction of the ideas expressed in the text. The article examines the possible ways of implementing the reader-response theory in a literature class, including written assignments, personal responses to a literary text and in-class discussions. The research focuses on qualitative data collection and on analyzing students’ responses to these activities. Furthermore, the research aims to provide a clearer picture of students’ attitudes, observations and personal reactions when interacting with a literary text. One of the aims of the article is to provide recommendations and suggestions regarding reader-response theory application in teaching literature courses at tertiary level, in addition to designing course curricula and selecting appropriate in-class activities.

Abstract:
Given their photoluminescent character, portable quantum dot readers are often sophisticated and relatively expensive. In response, we engineered a “do it yourself” fluorescence reader employing paper materials and a mid-range smartphone camera. Black paperboard facilitated a versatile, lightweight and foldable case; whereas cellophane paper was observed to behave as a simple, yet effective, optical bandpass filter leading to an advantageous device for the quantitative interrogation of quantum dot nanocrystals concentrations (from 2.5 to 20 nM), which are suitable for optical point-of-care biosensing. The streptavidin-coated nanocrystals employed are commercially available and the developed reader was benchmarked with a standard portable quantum dot reader, thereby demonstrating advantages in terms of cost and linear analytical range.

Abstract:
This article deals with the relationship between the author`s view concerning the main idea and its impact on the reader in contemporary Kazakh prose. Features of postmodernism and its characteristic features are widely reflected in contemporary Kazakh prose. Particularly, an apolitical view and aesthetic effect establish strong connection between author and reader. The author`s apolitical point of view (approach) is directly related to the conveying themain points of idea in the process of writing. The personal opinion of the author is the main foundation for the theme and ideas of the work. The reader receives an aesthetic impression from the author’s worldview. Two categories, integrating, convey to us the relevance of a work. All these are postmodern features inherent in modern Kazakh prose. This article identifies the differences in the detailed and mental picture of the post-modernism of modern Kazakh literature and also describes their manifestations in prose scenes. The author analyzed the main problems of the writer's laboratory and discussed the idea of a postmodernist trend.

Abstract:
For the most part, scholars interested in biblical “intertextuality” have divided themselves into two categories: those interested in a reader-oriented approach and those utilizing an author-oriented approach. The reader-oriented approach is a synchronic reading focused primarily on the reader’s perception of the text. By contrast, the author-oriented approach is a diachronic reading concerned with discerning the authorial intent of an intertextual connection. Proponents of an author-oriented approach accuse reader-oriented scholars with eisegesis, whereas those interested in reader-oriented studies claim that the other side runs the risk of speculation by focusing on something as elusive as authorial intent. An appropriate method or approach for studying intertextuality depends on the two (or more) texts in question. This article will examine the benefits of utilizing the best method for the right texts. In some cases, a reader-oriented approach brings to light a connection that might not be found if an author-oriented approach took precedence. In order to substantiate this proposal this article will explore the intertextual connections between Lam 4:1–10 and Song 5:10–16. The lexical parallels within these two passages are distinct and dense. Their unique use of color imagery and their utilization of rare Hebrew words create a purposeful point of connection. Whereas an author-oriented approach is nearly impossible in this case (owing to the difficulty of dating), a reader-oriented approach reveals a deep and profound new meaning for each text.

Abstract:
Modern stylistics is in the process of emerging completely from the shadows of the New Critical prohibitions on discussing the intentional and psychological fallacies in literary reading. Informed by cognitive linguistics and the psychology of cognition, a strong tradition of cognitive poetics has become established within stylistics, serving as a powerful challenge to the psychological fallacy in particular: readerly effects, emotions and significances in literary engagement are now regarded as part of the legitimate ground of stylistic study. In the classical terms that underpin the long view of stylistics, we now possess a good research programme in the systematic account of meaningfulness ( logos) and emotional affect ( pathos). What remains is the challenge of a similarly principled account of ethics. However, just as the cognitive turn has taken an applied linguistic approach to interpretation and aesthetics, so our cognitive poetic approach to ethos must be based on a descriptive account not of authority and immanent intentionality, but on the readerly sense of adopting a position in the process of literary reading. The concept of the intentional fallacy cannot be criticised as comprehensively as the psychological fallacy, but it nevertheless poses the wrong sort of question. This article sets out an encompassing framework for the analysis of ethics as an interaction between readerly disposition and textual imposition, to produce a sense of a ‘positioned reader’ of a literary work. Brief analytical illustrations from literary prose fiction are presented for exploration. The article draws on and questions related traditions in critical theory and psychology, with the aim of establishing a fully rounded stylistics as the foundational principle and principal method in literary study. My ultimate framing objective is an applied linguistic approach to literary scholarship that is evidential, dialogic and humane, and which completes the circle of meaning, feeling and significance familiar to generations of literary scholars.

Abstract:
Summary In the epistemic frame of the biocultural turn and of the neuroaesthetics, we have developed neurohermeneutics as an approach to literature that aims at contributing to the current debate about the linkage between literary, cognitive and neuroscientific studies, focusing on the relationship between mindbrain processes mirrored in the formal features of the text and the strategies activated by the author in a text in order to guide the reader in imagining, emotionally feeling and cognitively getting meanings out of the literary experience. The aim of the neurohermeneutical approach is to grasp and describe phenomenologically the mirroring process between the two extremes of the literary experience, i.e. the writer’s creative process as it is mirrored in the formal features of the literary work and the reader’s imaginative reconfiguration of the text, and what they share in common. The reader revives the mental imaginative processes of the author by creating his/her unrepeatable individual experiences of the text and subjectively redesigning it in an endless loop of features that trigger the imagination and its creative potential both while writing and by reading literature.

Abstract:
One of the most intriguing questions in both stylistic and rhetorical analyses relates to determining textual effect on readers, aesthetic or otherwise. Whether the power of the text is directly associated with the role of the text producer and his or her intentions, the linguistic, paralinguistic, extralinguistic and situational context of the text, the background and socio-cognitive expectations of the reader, or a combination of some or all of these factors (or other factors) is a question that is still the subject of stylistic and rhetorical analysis today. This article is a further step in this direction. It attempts to investigate one dimension of textual effect, namely uniformity in reader reaction to an argumentative poem entitled Dinner with the Cannibal, by focusing on the roles that genre and metaphor play in ideologically positioning readers. It argues, on the one hand, that literature is the dominant genre in this hybrid literary-argumentative poem, channelling the readers’ initial interpretations almost exclusively in the interest of more traditional literary interpretative approaches. On the other hand, and more importantly, it focuses on the role that metaphor, as a cognitive link between text producer and reader, plays in the construction of an extremely controlled, uniform interpretation of the argumentative dimension to the poem. The overall effect of the way genre and metaphor function in this argumentative poem, it is concluded, is highly ideological.

Abstract:
The demand to increase throughput in HTS programs, without a concomitant addition to costs, has grown significantly during the past few years. One approach to handle this demand is assay miniaturization, which can provide greater throughput, as well as significant cost savings through reduced reagent costs. Currently, one of the major challenges facing assay miniaturization is the ability to detect the assay signal accurately and rapidly in miniaturized formats. Digital imaging is a detection method that can measure fluorescent or luminescent signals in these miniaturized formats. In this study, an imaging system capable of detecting the signal from a fluorescent protease assay in multiple plate formats was used to evaluate this detection method in an HTS environment. A direct comparison was made between the results obtained from the imaging system and a fluorescent plate reader by screening 8,800 compounds in a 96-well plate format. The imaging system generated similar changes in relative signal for each well in the screen, identified the same active compounds, and yielded similar IC50 values as compared to the plate reader. When a standard protease inhibitor was evaluated in 96-, 384-, 864-, and 1536-well plates using imaging detection, similar IC50 values were obtained. Furthermore, similar dose-response curves were generated for the compound in 96- and 384-well assay plates read in a plate reader. These results provide support for digital imaging as an accurate and rapid detection method for high-density microtiter plates.

Abstract:
COVID-19 disease is a pandemic, with severe clinical manifestations, high lethality and which has reached at least 128 countries. In this sense, the bioprotection of health professionals is a fundamental principle in preserving the lives of those who work in the direct care of patients who are victims of SARS-CoV-2. Each day the number of confirmed cases exceeds the most optimistic estimates, which cause severe damage and overload in the infrastructure of health systems. The present study addressed the main dilemmas and difficulties faced by health professionals in combating the pandemic. A literature review was carried out in the Embase, Scopus, Pubmed / Medline, Web of Science, Scielo, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases, where 28 articles were selected after independent peer review. The most recent and relevant studies on the need for effective bioprotection were included. For this reason, we put the step by step for the reader to understand and execute. Besides, the indiscriminate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) was analyzed, what to do in the absence of such material, and the role of the professional as a health educator in the optimization of available resources. In conclusion, it is recommended to use PPE's with parsimony and telehealth as a useful device in the emergency support of professionals working on the front lines in the fight against coronavirus.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract I propose that the fictionalized reader as observed in popular science represents a novel approach to the incorporation of a reader into a non-fiction text. The traditional approach relies on “the reader-in-the-text” – an entity that covertly represents a generalized real reader through author’s voice using evaluation, modalization, concession, and mood among other mechanisms. The findings are based on a comparative analysis of a corpus of 193 occurrences of presented discourse of scientists (extracted from 100 narratives of discovery) and 73 occurrences of presented discourse attributed to the reader (observed outside the narratives). The analysis shows that the fictionalized reader uses presented discourse (speech and thoughts assigned to the reader) to shape a reader-character, who represents a singular individual (as opposed to a generalized audience) with whom a reader can relate. The need for a more concrete reader arises in thought experiments commonly used as explanatory devices in popular science. The fictionalized reader helps popular science authors explain scientific concepts in more engaging terms and contributes to a more interactive and inclusive model of popularization.

Abstract:
Abstract The objective of this essay is to revisit the theoretical construction of Critical Rationalism, starting from the philosophy of Kantian reason contained in the works Critique of pure reason and Critique of practical reason to discuss their respective influences over the work of Karl Popper. We aim, with this exercise, to shed light on the critical-rationalist approach in Organization Studies. Our argument is that Kantian thought has been conducive, on the one hand, to a negative philosophy that considers idealism prior notions and a priori knowledge fundamental to the creative conception of knowledge and, on the other hand, to a hypothetical-deductive science that seeks to bring us closer to truth through criticism. The basis of critical rationalism lies in the search for reason and transcendental truth. This is a call not only for the production of theories, but for dedication to test their validity – a problem that has not received much attention from researchers in the field of organization studies.

Abstract:
The treatment of hexopyranosyl bromides, also activated at C6 (Br, OTs, OMs), with H2S/HCONMe2 under basic conditions gives rise to 1,6-dideoxy 1,6-epithio sugars. One such sugar has been further transformed into the synthetically useful 3,4-anhydro-1,6-dideoxy-1,6-epithio-β-D-galactose. The treatment of this epoxide with sodium azide and with cyclohexylamine is described. An analogous treatment of one doubly activated hexopyranosyl bromide with sodium hydrogen selenide has led to a novel 1,6-dideoxy 1,6-episeleno sugar which displayed interesting n.m.r. spectra. Finally, in an attempt to prepare 1,6-dideoxy 1,6-epidithio sugars, a tetraalkylammonium tetrathiomolybdate reagent was found to be the reagent of choice for converting doubly activated hexopyranosyl bromides into 1,6-dideoxy 1,6-epithio sugars.

Abstract:
The review explores the philosophical basis of the application of Rosenblatt’s Reader Response Theory (RRT) to teach reading-to write of literary works in practical senses in EFL contexts across borders. Grounded in the integration of paradigm shift from text- to reader-oriented, critical pedagogy and literacy, and socio-constructivism, reader response-based teaching pedagogy places learners among the active meaning makers as members of a democratic classroom community while getting immersed in critical reading-writing (literacy) events. Moreover, this critical review highlights the possible classroom practices as framed by RRT principles that offer freedom and enjoyment in reading literary works to face the sophistication of varied modern 21st century educational web-based platforms that lead to the use of e-response journal and e-literature circles by means of e-peer-reviewing. Drawing on the current technology-enriched teaching media, RRT application is expected to benefit most EFL learners in gauging literature-based literacy development to sensitize their intercultural communication across global contexts. Moreover, recommended practical trends of RRT principles are presented in this review.

Abstract:
In this essay, I reflect on the empirical and subjective foundations of critical readings of poetry. I use my own experience, not because it is more valid than anyone else's but because I have direct access to it. The first section, “The Used-Book-Store Approach,” addresses the formation of poetic canons and the position of the reader as an agent and a consumer. The second section, “The Subway Approach,” gives an example of close reading in a setting where the world within the poem, the world within the reader, and the world outside the reader lose their borders. The third section, “The Rare-Book-Room Approach,” examines the impulse to seek the real thing that poetry can trigger and proposes that the first critical step for the reader consists in assessing the status of the poem as his or her object.

Abstract:
The expression GEO is mostly used to denote relation to the earth. However it should not be confined to what is related to the earth's surface, as other objects also need three dimensional representation and documentation, like cultural heritage objects. They include both tangible and intangible ones. In this paper the 3D data acquisition and 3D modelling of cultural heritage assets are briefly described and their significance is also highlighted. Moreover the organization of such information, related to monuments and artefacts, into relational data bases and its use for various purposes, other than just geometric documentation is also described and presented. In order to help the reader understand the above, several characteristic examples are presented and their methodology explained and their results evaluated.

Full text
Abstract:
A novel methodology is proposed to reliably predict the resonant characteristics of a multipatch backscatter-based radio frequency identification (RFID) chipless tag. An ultra-wideband impulsion radio (UWB-IR)-based reader interrogates the chipless tag with a UWB pulse, and analyzes the obtained backscatter in the time domain. The RFID system consists of a radar cross-section (RCS)-based chipless tag containing a square microstrip patch antenna array in which the chipless tag is interrogated with a UWB pulse by an UWB-IR-based reader. The main components of the backscattered signal, the structural mode, and the antenna mode were identified and their spectral quality was evaluated. The study revealed that the antenna-mode backscatter includes signal carrying information, while the structural mode backscatter does not include any tag information. The simulation findings were confirmed by experimental measurements obtained in an anechoic chamber environment using a 6-bit multipatch chipless RFID tag. Finally, the novel technique does not use calibration tags and can freely orient tags with respect to the reader.

Farid Khafaga, Ayman. "Discourse Interpretation: A Deconstructive, Reader-oriented Approach to Critical Discourse Analysis." International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature 6, no. 2 (January 4, 2017): 138. http://dx.doi.org/10.7575/aiac.ijalel.v.6n.2p.138.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is based on the premise that discourse is always under the influence of different ideological readings which not only formulate its meaning but inspire various interpretations as well; hence, it needs a theoretical cover that could justify its multiplicity of meaning. This paper, therefore, discusses the possibility of introducing a deconstructive, reader-oriented approach (DRA) to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a model of discourse interpretation. The paper tries to appraise the theoretical framework of CDA and to offer an overview of the fundamental propels of its interpretative task in the light of two poststructuralist literary theories: the deconstruction theory and the reception theory. The paper also endeavours to emphasize the deconstructive nature of CDA by shedding lights on its relationship with the above mentioned theories. The conclusion drawn from this paper shows that introducing a deconstructive, reader-oriented approach to CDA is relevant to the latter's interpretative nature enough to diminish a part of the criticism levelled against its interpretative framework concerning plurality of meaning; and to establish some sort of exoneration for its theoretical shortcomings. The paper recommends that DRA will bridge the gap between theory and practice as it offers a theoretical base to discourse which could advocate its critiques regarding diversity of interpretation. Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, deconstructive, reader-oriented approach, deconstructionism, interpretation, responsiveness

Sootak, Jaan. "Dear reader,." Juridica International 28 (November 13, 2019): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.12697/ji.2019.28.00.

Full text
Abstract:
A large proportion of the articles in Juridica International this year is dedicated to criminal law. A paper that truly addresses the issues of legal dogmatics in this field in depth with regard to delict of negligence was contributed by Laura Feldmanis. Raimo Lahti’s article on the criminal liability of a legal person is written from the standpoint of criminal and comparative law, while Frieder Dünkel’s approach to German sanction law should provide plenty of interest and joy of discovery for legal scientists and practitioners alike. Thomas Weigend’s submission, in turn, takes a rather unique look at the material element in criminal law and criminal procedure. He focuses his attention on truth and values. Andres Parmas has considered Estonian criminal law in relation to the dogmatics of international criminal law. All of these articles are an outgrowth of presentations made at a jubilee conference that took place at the University of Tartu. I would like to take the opportunity here to thank everyone who participated in the conference – especially, of course, the speakers. In addition, two articles on medical law had their beginnings in presentations at the conference. One of them, by Henning Rosenau, is squarely in the domain of classic medical law, bringing together discussion of human rights and of issues connected with reproductive medicine. The other medical-law article, by Henning Lorenz, draws particular attention to an addition to German criminal law that has made waves (and met a lot of criticism) in the fields of criminal law, medical law, and legal policy in general: criminalising assisted suicide. This topic has been subject to intense discussion also in the media of Estonia and other countries. I can happily say on behalf of both myself and the editorial board that, at the same time, the new issue offers plenty to read also for those less interested in criminal and medical law. Self-driving cars are a matter of interest not only to engineers but also for lawyers. Taivo Liivak’s ‘What Safety are We Entitled to Expect of Self-driving Vehicles?’ considers some of the issues that we will soon face on the streets on a daily basis. Private law is represented in the article ‘A Half-built House? The New Consumer Sales Directive Assessed as Contract Law’. This piece on consumer protection and contract law was submitted by Kåre Lilleholt, who holds the title Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Tartu. A paper jointly authored by Ilya Ilin and Aleksei Kelli, ‘The Use of Human Voice and Speech in Language Technologies: The EU and Russian Intellectual Property Law Perspectives’, examines the legal protection of intellectual property. The field of constitutional law is represented too, by Ivo Pilving’s presentation of an approach to fundamental rights in the context of European Union law in ‘Parallele Anwendbarkeit von Grundrechtecharta der EU und nationalen Grundrechten’. Still more colours are added to the legal palette by Märt Maarand, with his article ‘The Concept of Recovery of Credit Institutions in the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive’, and by the paper ‘Is Full Preference for a Secured Claim in Insolvency Proceedings Justified?’, by Anto Kasak.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay attempts to understand and appreciate what Origen was aiming at in his commentary on the Song of Songs. Origen “imagined” the purpose of reading the Scriptures as the transformation of the reader into the “likeness of God”. He viewed the Song of Songs as the climax of all songs of Scripture and therefore, “learning to sing that song” expressed the highest stage of Christian growth. As the subject matter of the Song of Songs is love, it is clear that perfection in love is indeed the ultimate goal of human life. However, understanding love is difficult and many go astray, because, in fact, as God is love, understanding love and loving is as profound as God Self. It is through the Logos at work in the Scriptures as well as within us and in the whole of the created reality that we are empowered for loving and understanding love. Origen describes the action of the Logos with the image of a “saving wound caused by the arrow of the divine eros”. Origen’s perspective is not that of working towards a fusion of horizons between a human author in the past and a present-day reader, but of working towards an ascent from the level of the “letter” to the level of the “spirit”.
