Abstract:
Acute perforations are one of the recognised complications of both diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. The incidence rate varies according to the type of procedure and the anatomical location within the GI tract. For decades, surgical treatment has been the standard of care, but endoscopic closure has become a more popular approach, due to feasibility and the reduction of the burden of surgery. Various devices are available now such as through-the-scope clips, over-the-scope clips, endoscopic suturing devices, stents, bands and omental patch. All have been tested in studies done on humans or animal models, with a reasonable overall technical and clinical success rate, proving efficiency and feasibility of endoscopic closure. The choice of which device to use depends on the site and the size of the perforation. It also depends on availability of thee device and the endoscopist’s experience. A number of factors that could predict success of endoscopic closure or favour surgical treatment have been suggested in different studies. After successful endoscopic closure, patients are usually kept nil by mouth and receive antibiotics for a duration that varied between different studies.

Abstract:
This paper explores how digital transformation has improved the delivery of immigration services. In contrast, this refers to the fact that, despite the existence of e-immigration services, there has been inadequate research to examine the e-immigration system in Tanzania. This paper explores the e-immigration portal, its advantages, and its challenges. Using a mixed-method, data were collected from secondary and primary sources through document review, portal analysis, interviews, and questionnaires. Primary and secondary data show that e-immigration portals can be accessed using personal computers, smartphones, and internet cafes. Also, the time for applicants to receive passports and travel documents has decreased from more than seven days in the old manual system to three days on average in the new e–immigration system. Following the transforming government process, immigration service delivery has been improved by implementing the e–immigration system. Thee–immigration services offer advantages to users like online application, online payment, time-saving, and costs, but challenges like digital literacy, inaccuracy of information, feedback, and network problems impact the system's smooth operation. Here digital literacy campaign, feedback mechanism, applicant support desk, and digital service desk are recommended.

Abstract:
Background:Sub-Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate burden of preterm birth and other adverse outcomes. A better understanding of the demographic, clinical, and biologic underpinnings of these adverse outcomes is urgently needed to plan interventions and inform new discovery. Methods:The Zambian Preterm Birth Prevention Study (ZAPPS) is a prospective observational cohort established at the Women and Newborn Hospital (WNH) in Lusaka, Zambia. We recruit pregnant women from district health centers and the WNH and offer ultrasound examination to determine eligibility. Participants receive routine obstetrical care, lab testing, midtrimester cervical length measurement, and serial fetal growth monitoring. At delivery, we assess gestational age, birthweight, vital status, and sex and assign a delivery phenotype. We collect blood, urine, and vaginal swab specimens at scheduled visits and store them in an on-site biorepository. In September 2017, enrollment of the ZAPPS Phase 1 – the subject of this report – was completed. Phase 2 – which is limited to HIV-uninfected women – reopened in January 2018. Results:Between August 2015 and September 2017, we screened 1784 women, of whom 1450 (81.2%) met inclusion criteria and were enrolled. The median age at enrollment was 27 years (IQR 23–32) and thee median gestational age was 16 weeks (IQR 13–18). Among parous women (N=866; 64%), 21% (N=182) reported a prior miscarriage, 49% (N=424) reported a prior preterm birth, and 13% (N=116) reported a prior stillbirth. The HIV seroprevalence was 24%. Discussion:We have established a large cohort of pregnant women and newborns at the WHN to characterize the determinants of adverse birth outcomes in Lusaka, Zambia. Our overarching goal is to elucidate biological mechanisms in an effort to identify new strategies for early detection and prevention of adverse outcomes. We hope that findings from this cohort will help guide future studies, clinical care, and policy.

Abstract:
While intramural sports contests do not enjoy the same widespread media exposure and attention as collegiate and professional athletics, they still produce special memories for the participants. It is the fun, stress release, joy of teamwork, thrill of competition, opportunity to escape the monotony of everyday life, and the emotional arousal which are generated by recreational sports programs that are the reasons why people participate. The “memorable moments” concept examines strategies on marketing implication and maintaining programmatic quality. The basic components of a “memorable moment” are intangible elements and include enjoyment or exhilaration, personal value, and something that is atypical. While intangibles result from the competition itself a variety of specific tangible techniques such as a public address announcer, spectator seating, campus media coverage, special promotions and activities, a national anthem, game programs, commercial sponsorship, and videotaping, can be employed to further emphasize and complement these aspects. The implementation of these tangibles and increasing the attractiveness of the participatory experience has tremendous positive marketing implications. The foremost advantage is the excitement and heightened awareness of programs that is engendered through expanded word-of-mouth. Tangibles also assist in improving visibility of programs and facilitates elevated recognition and exposure throughout the institution. The benefits of these effects often translated into more participants, greater receptiveness toward budget requests, improved networking opportunities both within and outside the institution, and enhanced respect from upper-level administrators. Although the “memorable moments: concept offers numerous exceptional strengths, its implementation also requires certain important commitments and programming adjustments. Timelines and advance planning are even more crucial when programs include additional enhancements. Furthermore, financial and personnel requirements are increased as well as the time and coordination necessary for special game logistical arrangements. Potential problems and issues must also be addressed. Rescheduling requests, inclement weather, spectator control for large crowds, and decisions related to determining which activities or games will receive special attention, what degree of auxiliary features will be utilized, and how to ensure the “memorable moments” remain something special are the most prominent topics to be considered. The reasons for participating in intramural sports are many and varied. However, fun, enjoyment, and the thrill of competition are usually at the heart of the decision to become involved in these activities. “Memorable moments” represents an excellent strategy to inspire and magnify thee feelings among participants while also displaying the program on center stage in an extraordinary marketing medium.

Abstract:
Although the symmetry of the diffraction contrast of defects has received the attention of several authors already some time ago, symmetry rules are mainly based on geometrical arguments without solid proof for their validity in the general case. The symmetry of the diffraction contrast depends on the symmetry of the displacements and on the symmetry of the diffraction conditions (which of course follows from Neumann’s principle). General proofs for thee symmetry of dislocation contrast are given in this paper. The diffraction contrast of a dislocation (or any number of parallel straight dislocations) which are inclined with respect to the surface of the foil and therefore show the so called “oscillating contrast” can only exhibit one of a limited number of symmetries.(SAL): symmetry along the (projected) line of the dislocation(SAM): symmetry about midfoil(SAC): symmetry about center

Abstract:
A three-dimensional (3D) model for wide-band dual-polarized (DP) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) mobile-to-mobile (M2M) channels is proposed. Using geometrical scattering based on concentric spheres at the transmitter (Tx) and at the receiver (Rx), a 3D parametric reference model for2×2M2M DP multipath fading channels is developed. The channel model assumes the use of colocated half-wavelength dipole antennas for vertical and horizontal polarizations at both transmit and receive stations. Model parameters include the velocities of the Tx and Rx nodes, the distance between the nodes, the 3D antenna pattern gains, the azimuth and elevation angles of arrival and departure, the geometrical distribution of the scatterers, the Rician K-factors defining the fading envelope distributions, the maximum Doppler frequency, the scattering loss factors, the cross-polar power discrimination ratio (XPD), and the copolarization power ratio (CPR). Using the proposed model, expressions for joint time-frequency correlation functions (TFCFs) are derived which are used to investigate system behavior over different wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) channel realizations. The numerical results illustrate the sensitivities of the TFCF to simultaneous time and frequency offsets for the2×2DP-MIMO architectures.

Abstract:
During the sixteenth century Galen'sDe constitutione artis medicae(i.224–304 Kühn) enjoyed a great success: in about fifty years it received four different Latin translations and three commentaries. Certainly this is also true of other medical classical texts, but such success is surprising for a treatise which did not have a wide circulation either in the Middle Ages or in the seventeenth century and later. In fact it is preserved in its entirety in only one Greek manuscript (Florence, Laur. plut. 74.3 = L of the twelfth or thirteenth century, with later corrections = L) and in a Latin translation by Niccolò of Reggio, who worked mainly for King Robert I in Naples in the first half of the fourteenth century. Furthermore, in his edition of 1679 René Chartier made a mistake, which the humanistic editors of the Greek Galen had avoided. The last part of theDe const, art. med.itself enjoyed a considerablefortunaas an independent tract on prognosis in the Greek and Latin manuscript tradition. The editors of the Aldine and the Basle editions knew such anexcerptum, at least in the manuscript Par. gr. 2165 (= P) of the sixteenth century, and rightly decided not to print it. Chartier found it in the manuscript Par. gr. 2269 of the fifteenth or sixteenth century, and published it in the wrong belief that it was a new treatise of Galen's (vol. ii. 170–95 = viii.891–5). He was followed by Carl Gottlob Kühn in his edition of 1821, who printed theDe const, art. med.in the first volume (289–304) and theDe praesagiturain vol. xix.497–511. The error was not publicly detected until Kalbfleisch in 1896.

Abstract:
Objective:To compare the efficacy and safety of a 7-day course of treatment with oral grepafloxacin, 400 mg once daily, and oral doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily, in patients with chlamydial cervicitis. Methods:Women aged 18 years or older attending 17 sexually transmitted disease clinics in the United States who had clinical signs of mucopurulent cervicitis or who had a recent positive culture or nonculture test forChlamydia trachomatisor who had contact with a male partner with a positive culture forC. trachomatiswere enrolled into this randomized, double-blind, active-controlled clinical study. The diagnosis of chlamydial cervicitis was based on culture forC. trachomatis. Patients were randomized to receive a 7-day course of treatment with either oral grepafloxacin, 400 mg once daily, or oral doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily. Response to therapy was assessed 3–8 days and 21–28 days after completion of treatment. The primary measure of efficacy was eradication ofC. trachomatisat the 21–28 day follow-up visit. Clinical success, defined as improvement or complete resolution of the signs and symptoms of cervicitis, was a secondary measure of efficacy. Results:Of the 451 female patients enrolled, 228 received grepafloxacin and 223 received doxycycline. In all, 154/451 (35%) patients were evaluable at the 21–28 day follow-up (81 who received grepafloxacin and 73 who received doxycycline). Microbiologic and clinical success rates demonstrated the equivalence of the two treatments. TheC. trachomatiseradication rates were 96.3% (78/81) and 98.6% (72/73) for patients receiving grepafloxacin or doxycycline, respectively. The two study drugs were also equivalent in resolving clinical signs and symptoms, with clinical success rates of 88.9% (64/72) and 89.5% (51/57) for patients treated with grepafloxacin and doxycycline, respectively. Both drugs were well tolerated, with 47% of patients receiving grepafloxacin and 46% of patients receiving doxycycline experiencing drug-related adverse events, none of which was serious. Conclusions:Seven days of treatment with oral grepafloxacin, 400 mg once daily, was as effective as 7 days of treatment with oral doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily, in patients with cervicitis caused byC. trachomatis. Both agents were well tolerated and had comparable safety profiles. Grepafloxacin’s once-daily dosing regimen may offer advantages in terms of patient compliance.

Abstract:
The effects of implantation of cultured adrenal medullary cells on the recovery of neurotransmitter specific reflex activity were studied in the rat spinal cord using electrophysiological testing methods. Cell suspensions of cultured neonatal adrenal medullary chromaffin (AM) cells (which produce catecholamines), or Schwann (Sc) cells (controls) were implanted into the lumbar region of the spinal cord 2 weeks after catecholamine (CA) denervation by intracisternal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). All cells were taken from 7 day neonates and cultured for 10 days in the presence of nerve growth factor (NGF). Three months after implantation, the extent of implant-associated recovery of reflex activity was determined by measuring electromyogram (EMG) activity and force associated with the long latency component of the hindlimb withdrawal reflex (which is CA modulated). After the electrophysiological testing, rats were anesthetized, and the spinal cords were rapidly removed and frozen. Spinal cords were sectioned longitudinally, and implanted cells were visualized using glyoxylic acid techniques. Labelled sections were examined to determine cell survival. Results indicate that 1) chromaffin cells survive for 3 months in the segments of the cord into which they have been implanted and 2) rats implanted with AM cells have significantly more forceful withdrawal reflexes than those that received Sc cells or received no implant after lesioning.

In this work, we investigated an intermediate layer in the structure of a photosensitive MOS structure nCdO / pCdTe . X-ray phase analysis shows that the intermediate layer between Mo and pCdTe is rather complex in composition. It contains dichalcogenides - three oxide MoO3 and a thin layer of a composite material with the composition of ditelluride MoTe2 . According to X-ray diffraction measurements, the total thickness of the intermediate layer is no more than ~ 200Ǻ. It was shown that in the nCdO / pCdTe structure the base material CdTe mainly consists of a homogeneous cubic modification layer.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTClostridium difficile-associated diarrhea has been associated with disruption of the normal intestinal microbiota, particularly theBacteroides fragilisgroup andPrevotellaspecies. Surotomycin is a bactericidal cyclic lipopeptide in development for treatment ofClostridium difficile-associated diarrhea that has selective and potent activity againstC. difficileand other Gram-positive bacteria and a minimal impact on intestinal Gram-negative organisms. The impacts of ascending doses of surotomycin on major organism groups in the gut microbiota of healthy volunteers were evaluated during a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multiple-dose phase 1 study. Thirty volunteers were randomized into 3 cohorts, using a 4:1 ratio, to receive 250 mg, 500 mg, or 1,000 mg of surotomycin, or placebo, twice daily for 14 days. Stool samples collected at baseline (days 0 and 1) and at the end of treatment (days 13 to 15) were cultured quantitatively. TheB. fragilisgroup, theBacteroides/Prevotellagroup, andEnterobacteriaceaewere also quantified by quantitative real-time PCR. Baseline and end-of-treatment stool samples showed 1- to 2-log10CFU/g reductions in total bacterial counts for most volunteers. Various decreases in clostridial,Lactobacillus-Bifidobacteriumgroup, and enterococcus-streptococcus group counts occurred while patients were receiving surotomycin, whereas the enterobacteria and theB. fragilisgroup persisted at the end of treatment. There was no change in enterococcus MICs of surotomycin, nor was vancomycin-resistantEnterococcusdetected after exposure. Surotomycin at doses of up to 1,000 mg twice daily had only modest disruptive effects on the gut microbiota. The potential sparing of the gut microbiota by surotomycin may decrease the risk of disease recurrence.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to characterize the stereoselective pharmacokinetics of oral eflornithine in 25 patients with late-stageTrypanosoma bruceigambiensesleeping sickness. A secondary aim was to determine the concentrations ofl- andd-eflornithine required in plasma or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for an efficient eradication of theT. brucei gambienseparasites. Patients were randomly allocated to receive either 100 (group I,n= 12) or 125 (group II,n= 13) mg/kg of body weight of drug every 6 h for 14 days. The concentrations ofl- andd-eflornithine in the plasma and CSF samples were measured using a stereospecific liquid chromatographic method. Nonlinear mixed-effects modeling was used to characterize the plasma pharmacokinetics. The plasma concentrations ofl-eflornithine were on average 52% (95% confidence interval [CI], 51, 54%;n= 321) of thed-enantiomer concentrations. The typical oral clearances ofl- andd-eflornithine were 17.4 (95% CI, 15.5, 19.3) and 8.23 (95% CI, 7.36, 9.10) liters/h, respectively. These differences were likely due to stereoselective intestinal absorption. The distributions of eflornithine enantiomers to the CSF were not stereoselective. A correlation was found between the probability of cure and plasma drug exposure, although it was not more pronounced for thel-enantiomer than for that of total eflornithine. This study may explain why oral treatment for late-stage human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) patients with racemic eflornithine has previously failed; the more potentl-enantiomer is present at much lower concentrations in both plasma and CSF than those of thed-enantiomer. Eflornithine stereoselective pharmacokinetics needs to be considered if an oral dosage regimen is to be explored further.

Abstract:
The present paper investigates the performance of helical coil solar cavity receiver based parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) for the conversion of energy received from the Sun into useful heat and finally electricity. The experimental set-up has been designed in such a way that it enhances heat transfer coefficient and reduces losses in the PTC. The PTC comprised of a blackened helical coil made up of two concentric borosilicate glass cylinder with vacuum in the annulus, which is kept at a focal line of PTC. The vacuum significantly reduces the losses which are evident from a relatively higher temperature of a 565 K obtained at the surface of the helical coil. Heat loss from helical coil solar cavity receiver has also been investigated and it was found that with the increase in vacuum pressure at annulus by 50%, the losses from the receiver has been increased by 26.67%. The heat loss from receiver has been observed to be proportional to the vacuum pressure within the annulus space.

Abstract:
Discordianism, founded in 1957 and generally regarded as a “parody religion,” has only recently received scholarly consideration as a valid religious expression within modern Paganism (Cusack 2010). Yet ritual practice within Discordianism remains largely unexamined; Hugh Urban’s brief discussion of Discordian magical workings as a sub-category of Chaos Magic is the extent of academic discussion of the subject to date (Urban 2006). This article elaborates on Urban’s tantalising classification of Discordian magic. A brief history of Discordianism is sketched; then ritual and magic in the Discordian tradition is explored through an examination of key texts, including Malaclypse the Younger’s Principia Discordia (1965), and Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s Illuminatus! Trilogy (1975). Similarities between Chaos Magic and Discordianism are noted, and an analysis of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (TOPY), a magical order founded by British performance artist Genesis P-Orridge and others in 1981, elucidates the relationship between Chaos Magic and Discordian magic. It is argued that the essentially unorganised nature of Chaos Magic and Discordianism, and the trenchant resistance of both to any form of “orthodoxy,” justifies classifying Discordian magic as a form of Chaos Magic. Chaos magicians and Discordians both have a deconstructive and monistic worldview, in which binary oppositions collapse into undifferentiated oneness, and neither conformity of belief nor unity of practice is required to be an “authentic” Discordian or Chaote.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine whether the abundance of regulatory T cells (Tregs) (CD4+CD25high) affects thede novodevelopment of anti-HLA donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs).Methods. Unsensitized (PRA ≤ 10%, no DSA) adult primary KTRs who received a living (83%) or deceased (17%) KT in our Institution during 2004/2005 were included. DSA testing was performed monthly, and Tregs were quantified by flow cytometry every 3 months, during the 1st year after KT. All patients received triple drug immunosuppressive therapy (CNI + MMF or AZA + PDN); 83% received anti-CD25.Results. 53 KTRs were included; 32% developed DSA during the 1st year after KT. Significantly lower 7-year graft survival was observed in those who developed DSA. No difference was observed in Treg numbers up to 9 months after KT, between DSA positive and negative. However, at 12 months after KT, DSA-negative patients had significantly higher numbers of Treg.Conclusions. Early development of DSA was not associated to variations in Treg abundance. The differences in Treg numbers observed at the late time point may reflect better immune acceptance of the graft and may be associated to long-term effects. Additional inhibitory mechanisms participating earlier in DSA development after KT deserve to be sought.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted to verify the effect of Ceylon cinnamon on experimentally induced excision wounds in rats. Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups of eight rats each. Group A received a placebo containing 1.5% of cinnamon and Group B a placebo containing 3%. Group C, as the control group, didn’t receive any treatment and finally Group D received a blank placebo as the reference standard group. Wound healing was monitored on Days 3, 6, 9 and 14 and histological evaluation was carried out on the samples. The results show that cinnamon extract served to accelerate the wound healing process and specifically increased epithelialization in treatment groups compared to the other groups. Thus, this study demonstrates that Ceylon cinnamon may be effective in stimulating the enclosure of wounds.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT During the 2006 Legislative session, the Washington Department of Ecology received $1.45 million to pre-stage oil spill response equipment throughout the state. In the event of a spill, this equipment can be rapidly mobilized and deployed for spill containment or to protect local resources. Equipment caches are customized for each recipient. Available equipment includes storage trailers, boom vanes, containment boom, anchor systems, navigation lights, adsorbent materials, responder protective clothing, and safety and decontamination equipment. Recipients also receive equipment familiarization training with their mutual aid response agencies. Eligible recipients include local government public agencies, such as Counties, Fire and Police Departments, Port Districts, Public Utility Districts, Emergency Management Departments, and Tribes. Grant are awarded based on: substantial threat of an oil spill, resources that will be protected, recipient'S ability and willingness to deploy the equipment, proximity of nearby response equipment, and partnerships with other agencies. As of March 2007, Ecology and its contractor, Global Diving and Salvage have:Delivered equipment to 36 of 60 recipients.Pre-staged 47 of 97 equipment caches.Pre-staged 32,600’ of 52,600’ of containment boomTrained approximately 400 of 1,000 first responders. Equipment delivery and training will be completed by June 2007. This equipment has been used to avert potentially devastating spills. Examples of successful use of the pre-staged response equipment include:The City of Gig Harbor initiated a spill response by deploying containment boom and adsorbent materials at the Peninsula Yatch Basin Marina when a vessel carrying 200 gallons of diesel caught fire.Tacoma'S Fire and Police Departments deployed adsorbent materials when a vessel sank at the Delin Docks Marina on the Thea Foss Waterway. The San Juan DEM and the Island Oil Spill Association established a protection zone with containment boom during the raising of the sunken F/V Stanley.

Abstract:
This article presents the results of a test of three GPS receivers of GIS category (Topcon Turbo G1, Topcon, Magellan ProMark X-CM, Magellan, March II-E, Corvalis Microtechnology) in location under the entire cover of forest canopy. A network of 111 experimental points was established in the territory of Training Forest Enterprise (TFE) of the Technical University Zvolen, Forest District Kováčová, in variable forest and terrain conditions. Location of the points was measured by an exact terrestrial geodetic method and consequently by all receivers. To evaluate the location precision of each receiver we used the method of calculation of individual differences in co-ordinate values for each measurement, and calculation of average differences and their standard devia- tions for groups of measurements. The values of average co-ordinate errors and testing of the presence of systematic error were also calculated. To evaluate the influence of receiver type, stand age, tree species composition and terrain configuration multi-factor analysis of variance was used. General location error was 7.16 m for Topcon, 5.89 m for Magellan and 5.60 m for March. Difference between Topcon and the other two receivers is statistically significant. The influence of forest stand age is also statistically significant. The results of the test of tree species composition and terrain configuration influence are not unambiguous.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Although the efficacy and safety of existing therapies of heart failure (HF) have been demonstrated in clinical trials in the last 35 years, little is known about the treatment patterns of HF in clinical practice, especially in France. Objectives To describe the treatment initiation patterns and the subsequent treatment changes among HF patients, in the first year following an incident hospitalisation for HF, in a French real-world setting. Methods A cohort of patients aged 40 years old and older, with an incident hospitalisation for HF between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2013, was identified in the EGB, a 1/97 permanent random sample of the French nationwide claims database. All patients who died during the index hospitalization or with a period of at least 3 consecutive months with no healthcare dispensing recorded were excluded. All included patients were followed one year. HF drugs of interest were: beta blockers (BB), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), aldosterone antagonists (AA), diuretics, digoxin or ivabradine. Drug exposure was assessed quarterly using a Proportion of Days Covered >66% (>60 days out of the 90 days of the quarter covered by the treatment of interest), by considering HF drugs individually or in combination. Drug changes were assessed between each quarter over the first year of follow-up. Results Between 2008 and 2013, 7,387 from the EGB were included in the cohort study. The mean age at baseline was 77.7 years (±12.0 years) and 51.6% were women. During the follow-up, 24.4% of patients died and 20% did not receive any HF treatment. During the first quarter following initial hospitalisation, 42.7% of patients had diuretics, 26.0% had BB, 25.7% had ACEI, 7.4% had ARB, 7.6% had AA, 4.7% had digoxin and 1.3% had ivabradine. the most frequent combination was BB/ACE/ARB (23.4%). These proportions remained globally constant in each quarter of the follow-up. The main change occurred between thee first and the second quarter and concerned 53.1% of the initially untreated patients; by the second quarter, 22.2% of them initiated a BB/ACI/ARB combination, 13% a diuretic alone, 7.4% a BB and 4.9% a BB/ACI/ARB/AA combination. Conclusion This study provides precious information on treatment patterns after an initial hospital admission for HF at a time when new treatments for HF are emerging. Acknowledgement/Funding None

Sindhusen, Pendhamma. "Determining the Relationship between Bangkokian’s Willingness to Receive COVID-19 Vaccination and their Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) towards the Contagion." International Journal of Current Science Research and Review 04, no. 08 (August 28, 2021). http://dx.doi.org/10.47191/ijcsrr/v4-i8-21.

Abstract:
In the age of COVID-19 where a lethal contagion is ubiquitous across the globe, vaccination is of supreme significance. Vaccines provide immunity to individuals, rendering them less susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection or their symptoms less severe should they ultimately become infected. Vaccinating an adequate proportion of the population can majorly contribute to the achievement of herd immunity, consequently depressing the spread of the Coronavirus and ushering humanity towards eventual subjugation of the ongoing pandemic. Unfortunately, there are obstacles preventing such a roseate prospect from realization, one of which is vaccine hesitancy. Interestingly, past research in various regions around the world has associated this factor, partially, with the public’s knowledge and attitude concerning COVID-19, which could be measured by the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) towards COVID-19 scale. Such an association plausibly intimates that a public campaign shedding light on accurate information about the contagion might be of help in augmenting people’s willingness to receive vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Because circumstances inevitably varied from place to place, population to population, this study was undertaken to explore whether any similar association existed in Bangkok, Thailand, where the pandemic has been growing progressively worse, with the initial hypothesis that it did. However, results revealed that while there was indeed a statistically significant correlation between Bangkokians’ willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccines and their KAP towards the contagion, the correlation was weak (r = 0.30). This evinces the need for a more thorough and farther-reaching study and, until such a study has been meaningfully concluded, the appropriacy of apposite agencies concentrating elsewhere in their efforts to vanquish vaccine hesitancy and accomplish herd immunity against COVID-19.
