Full textDue to the rapid loss of the world’s biodiversity, the protection of endemic species has become a major challenge in conservation strategies. Where centres of endemism have been well described, their evolutionary histories remain poorly known. French Polynesia, located at the periphery of the Indo-Pacific province, is the only biogeographic region that includes 3 important hotspot of endemism with the Australs, the Gambier and the Marquesan archipelagos. In this region we examined the evolutive origin of endemism using coral reef fishes as our organism model. We studied the distribution of the 67 endemics of French Polynesia and their sister species. Of the 67 closely related endemic species studied we were able to estimate the date of speciation in 25, and reveal the existence of neoendemism and paleoendemism. An examination of the genetic diversity of 27 species from Marquesas, Gambier, and Hawaii revealed that there was no difference in genetic diversity between endemic and widespread species, hence genetic diversity is not a factor explaining why species are endemic today. A characterization of the demographic history of two marine fauna (Marquesas and Gambier) involving 15 endemic and 12 widespread species showed that on a short timescale, demographic patterns are similar for the majority of species with recent expansions highlighted by mitochondrial genes. In contrast, nuclear markers suggests that more ancient expansions are observed in 3 out of the 5 families studied. These results indicate that endemic species can be more often subject to population size reductions than widespread species and appear then more vulnerable to environmental disturbances

Full textBecause they are restricted to shallow waters and often occur in near-shore coastal environments, coral reefs can experience the effects of climatic or environmental change acting through the atmosphere or the marine or terrestrial environments. For this reason, coral reefs are used to reconstruct environmental parameters. First, this work propose a bringing up to date on structural and geodynamic context of linear island on french Polynesia (society and pitcairn-gambier archipelago). More, we display the interest of massives corals heads to offer unique opportunities to reconstruct the history of ocean-atmosphere variability throughout the tropics. The second part of the thesis discuss and evalute methods which provide chronology development, paleoclimatic reconstruction, and numerical analysis of coral-based paleoclimate data. We propose a new method to study corals heads ; the tomography. Coral growth of porites coral show inter-annual and decennial variability. Significative relations are observed between linear extension, density and calcification of porites and environmental paramaters (local and regional), particulary with water temperature and solar activity (insolation and radiation). 11 and 22 years cycles are especially identified. The work allow to propose a new method to study massives corals and confirm the potential of coral to offer a diverse array of skeletal climate tracers, subseasonnal resolution, and chronologic control. High-quality, multivariate climate reconstructions can be retrieved from living coral heads that will extend the observational baseline of tropical climate and bridge instrumental and geologic records of tropical variability

Full textBecause of the many cored wells, the atoll of Murrow is an exceptionally favorable site for the study of Holocene and Pleistocene reef construction. Interpretation, based on a combination of biological, sediment logical and digenetic criteria lead to the definition of four major paleo environments: fore-reef slope, reef front, reef flat and back reef zones. In wells drilled in the present lagoon, the evolution of paleoenvironements express the progressive development of the lagoon following burial of a reef fringed volcanic peak. The sequence within these wells, characterised by autochtonous faunas and floras, indicates an overall deepening. Wells drilled on the peripheral islands reveal that the top 200 meters have been deposited in five major stages. Each phase begins with the installation of a reef which accretes upwards during a period of interglacial transgression. This growth is topped by a marked discontinuity often indicating emergence during a period of sea-levellowering. This lowering has resulted in the development of a new reef body situated lower on the outer surface of the preceeding edifice. Thus, the external morphology of Mururoa atoll comprises a series of fringing reefs, each enveloping the preceeding reef body. The internal structure of each reef body comprises an initial phase of vertical growth with only limited lateral accretion. The upper parts of each edifice, on the contrary, indicate marked lateral accretion. This differentiation probably expresses varying rates of sea-level rise. The growth strategies demonstrated by the Holocene reefs seem to apply and be of great aid in the understanding of Pleistocene or older reefs

Full textComplex territories, the coastal areas are in constant evolution by the joint action of the natural processes and human activity. They are subjected to various risks like coastal erosion or the inverse, the colonization of the human installations towards the sea. Carried out in an interdisciplinary logic of reflexion, this study relates to the coastline of Moorea, the pressures exerted on this ecosystem and the potential consequences of the climate change in synergy with the socio-economic and demographic evolution. How has the coastline of Moorea evolved since 1955 ? What will it become with a increasing demographic development in association with the new data on the climate change ? What are the consequences of this evolution ? Such are the problems which this work tries to answer by comparing my results with studies of 1993 and 2001and by proposing the scénarios of evolution for 2100. The principal modification of the island is anthropic. The coastline is touched more by the embankment than by erosion : 12. 4% of the white sand beaches existing in 1993 have disappeared today. The elevation of the ocean due to climate change will also have consequences on the coastline. The coral reefs of the lagoon, natural resources on which man depends, could be disturbed by an acidification of water and an increasing of the sea surface temperature. If it is utopian, on a polynesian size, to stop the impacts predicted by the climate change, recommandations show by working out plans of management on the coastline of island we can limit the impact of man

Full textThe seawater [delta]234U has been re-estimated at 149. 6 ± 1 (1SD). The Tahiti aragonitic reef interstitial waters [delta]234U has been evaluated at 150. 2 ± 3. 6 (1SD). The average Tahiti corals [delta]234U is found at 148. 1 ± 1. 6 (1SD, n=78) close to the seawater and the reef interstitial waters values. Each of the three new deviated drills from Papeete P8, P9 and P10 display the last 14,000 years relative sea level rise. The long continuous cores are all in agreement for the MWP-1A abrupt event occurrence. We used two models (2 and 3D) which simulations suggest that this event could not have been entirely retrieved in a continuous drill. At the time of the MWP-1B, the sea level rise rhythm did not exceeded the Tahiti reef growth rate. The sea level envelope we propose constrains the MWP-1B amplitude at around 5 meters which is significantly smaller than the 12-14 meters from Barbados. The bathymetric uncertainties of the Papeete corals at 6,000 cal-yr-BP enable an Holocene sea level highstand

Full textThe 50 km2 of coral reef ecosystem that surround the tropical island of moorea (134 km2, 70 km of coastline, 8000 inhabitants, 900 hotel units, french overseas territory status) are the subject of this research. Their social and economic importance has been revealed in an exhaustive analysis of the human activity on the lagoon itself and on the coastal zone, and of the consequences today for the lagoon of fishing, extraction of materials, transport, tourism, the anthropisation of the shoreline etc. . . This present evaluation is informed bu the modifications to the lagoonal environment which were caused by either naturel phenomena or human activity and which have taken place over the past three decades. The report of the various social and economic functions of the lagoon is an inventory of the present situation, quantified in terms of money, man hours and own-consumption, and makes use of an integrated approach to all the lagoon's functions (control, use, protection, information) for the island of moorea. Legal and political aspects of the management of the environment, and particularly of those aspects affecting the lagoon itself, are traced back over the last thirty years for this overseas territory. The future is considered in terms of what could happen to the lagoon if predictions relating to natural phenomena; to demography, to economic development and to global change were to come about. The evidence seems to point to an unavoidable and irreversible degradation of the lagoon. .
