Abstract:
Abstract Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is currently encountered after bone marrow transplantation and transfusion. GVHD associated with transfusion (TA-GVHD) in apparently immunocompetent recipients has been recently reported with increasing frequency. A consistent finding in many of these cases is that the recipient received blood from a donor homozygous for one of the recipient's HLA haplotypes. However, the observed frequency of TA-GVHD is much lower than the estimated probability of this donor/recipient combination. The potential role of recipient immune responses in controlling TA-GVHD was investigated using an analogous murine model in which GVHD is induced by the injection of parental lymphoid cells into unirradiated F1 hybrid recipients. The effect of various immune manipulations of the recipient of GVHD induction was assessed by determining the number of donor lymphoid cells required to induce GVHD responses. Whereas depletion of recipient CD4+ cells increased the number of donor cells needed to induce GVHD, depletion of recipient CD8+ and natural killer cells resulted in fewer donor cells being needed to induce a GVHD response. These studies suggest a central role for functioning recipient CD8 and natural killer cells in the down-regulation of TA-GVHD development in recipients.

Abstract:
Gifts are usually given to someone to strengthen a relationship or to motivate someone. However, givers often need help determining the appropriate gift for the potential recipient. On the other hand, many recipients are disappointed with the gifts received. This event can result in the relationship between the giver and recipient being disrupted or the motivational goal not being achieved. This research aims to develop a system to recommend gifts based on the recipient's personality. Gift recommendation is determined based on the recipient's personality because the recipient highly values gifts that match the recipient's personality. The system is built using the Fuzzy method, and the personality measurement tool used is the Big Five Personality Test. Fifteen pairs of respondents validated the system. The validation results show that 80% of respondents as gift-givers strongly agree that the system helps determine the appropriate gift for someone. In addition, 73.33% of respondents as gift recipients strongly agree that the gifts recommended by the system do not disappoint them.

Abstract:
Introduction: Recipient travel distance may be an unrecognized burden in lung transplantation. Design: Retrospective single-center cohort study of all adult (≥18 years) first-time lung-only transplants from January 1, 2010, until February 28, 2017. Recipient distance to transplant center was calculated using the linear distance from the recipient’s home zip code to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Results: 569 recipients met inclusion criteria. Posttransplant graft survival was 85%, 88%, 91%, and 91% at 1 year and 49%, 52%, 57%, and 56% at 5 years posttransplant for recipient travel distances of ≤50, >50 to ≤250, >250 to ≤500, and >500 miles, respectively ( P = .10). Discussion: We found no significant relationship between recipient travel distance and posttransplant graft survival. In carefully selected recipients, travel distance is not a significant barrier to successful posttransplant outcomes which may be important for patient decision-making and donor allocation policy. These data should be validated in a national cohort.

Abstract:
This article analyzes government welfare policy in a general equilibrium setting with distortionary taxation. Government welfare policy is in accordance with the preferences of donor-taxpayers who want the consumption-leisure bundle of recipients to satisfy “basic needs.” The main focus is on the optimal level of employment for a destitute welfare recipient from the donor-taxpayer's perspective. This optimal level depends on the distortionary cost of taxation, whether the donor regards leisure or work as a basic “need,” and the distribution of the recipient's income if work is required. It is argued that donor appropriation of income resulting from mandatory recipient work in the private sector is not necessarily superior to either letting recipients retain their income or having the government appropriate the recipient's income from mandatory public sector employment.

Abstract:
Objective: to study the peculiarities of the induction effect of total RNA (tRNA) from xenogenic bone marrow cells (BMCs) on regeneration processes in the recipient's native liver with extensive liver resection using an adoptive transfer model. Materials and methods. The study was carried out on an adoptive transfer model using male Wistar rats (n = 20) and guinea pigs (n = 17). The donors were rats (n = 10). 12 hours after extensive liver resection (70-75%), tRNA was isolated from BMCs and injected into intact (non-operated) recipients intraperitoneally at a dose of 30 μg/100 g of weight. The induction effect of the tRNA on operated rats was studied in 3 groups of recipients: Group 1 (control, n = 5) - administration of saline to guinea pigs; Group 2 (control, n = 10) - administration of tRNA from a donor rat to a recipient rat (allogeneic transfer); Group 3 (experiment, n = 12) - administration of tRNA from a donor rat to a recipient guinea pig (xenogeneic transfer). In histological preparations of recipient livers, after 48, 72 hours and 7 days, we studied the mitotic activity of hepatocytes and the features of the microscopic picture of the liver. The significance of differences in the compared groups was assessed using the parametric Student's t-test. Results. The ability of BMC tRNA to tissue-specifically activate regenerative and immune responses in the liver after extensive resection was found to depend on the donor and recipient species identity. Introduction of allogeneic donor tRNA in the recipient's liver resulted in predominant enhancement in hepatocyte mitotic activity (p < 0.05). The use of xenogeneic donor tRNA leads to enhanced activity of only immuno-inflammatory reactions in the recipient's liver, such as sinusoidal cell activation, lymphocytic infiltration into sinusoids, and portal tract infiltration by inflammatory cells. Conclusion. To induce regenerative processes in the liver, tRNA obtained from allogeneic BMCs should be used.

Abstract:
South Korea, the newest member to join the OECD's Development Assistance Committee, has signaled that it will become a major donor of official development assistance (ODA). Having had its own history of being a large recipient of ODA, South Korea claimed that it will provide aid from the recipient's perspective. Using panel data covering twenty-three years (1987–2009) and 154 recipient countries, we examine whether South Korea's ODA reflects the recipient nation's humanitarian needs more than the donor's interests. We ask three questions: (1) What are the major determinants of South Korea's ODA allocation? (2) Has South Korea's ODA policies changed over different time horizons—that is, years, political regimes? (3) Does South Korea exhibit different standards of allocating ODA for different groups of recipient countries? We find that South Korea provides more aid to higher-income developing countries with higher growth rates, which shows the tendency to serve the donor's economic interests. When we examine the data by time periods, we do not find significant differences over decades or political regimes. However, when we reexamine the data based on recipients' income levels, we find that the relationship between per capita income of the recipient country and ODA allocation is negative only for the middle-income or lower-middle-income group recipients and positive for the rest. This finding suggests the possibility that South Korea's ODA policy may have a dual-track structure.

Abstract:
What are the communicative functions of sad facial expressions? Research shows that people feel sadness in response to losses but it’s unclear whether sad expressions function to communicate losses to others and if so, what makes these signals credible. Here we use economic games to test the hypothesis that sad expressions lend credibility to claims of loss. Participants play the role of either a proposer or recipient in a game with a fictional backstory and real monetary payoffs. The proposers view a (fictional) video of the recipient’s character displaying either a neutral or sad expression paired with a claim of loss. The proposer then decided how much money to give to the recipient. In three experiments, we test alternative theories by using situations in which the recipient’s losses were uncertain (Experiment 1), the recipient’s losses were certain (Experiment 2), or the recipient claims failed gains rather than losses (Experiment 3). Overall, we find that participants gave more money to recipients who displayed sad expressions compared to neutral expressions, but only under conditions of uncertain loss. This finding supports the hypothesis that sad expressions function to increase the credibility of claims of loss.

Abstract:
There is a paucity of literature examining recipient-donor obesity matching on liver transplantation outcomes. The United Network for Organ Sharing database was queried for first-time recipients of liver transplant whose age was ≥18 between January 2003 and September 2013. Outcomes including patient and graft survival at 30 days, 1 year, and 5 years and overall, liver retransplantation, and length of stay were compared between nonobese recipients receiving a graft from nonobese donors and obese recipient-obese donor, obese recipient-nonobese donor, and nonobese recipient-obese donor pairs. 51,556 LT recipients were identified, including 34,217 (66%) nonobese and 17,339 (34%) obese recipients. The proportions of patients receiving an allograft from an obese donor were 24% and 29%, respectively, among nonobese and obese recipients. Graft loss (HR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.09–1.46;p=0.002) and mortality (HR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.16–1.65;p<0.001) at 30 days were increased in the obese recipient-obese donor pair. However, 1-year graft (HR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.74–0.93;p=0.002) and patient (HR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.74–0.95;p=0.007) survival and overall patient (HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.86–1.00;p=0.042) survival were favorable. There is evidence of recipient and donor obesity disadvantage early, but survival curves demonstrate improved long-term outcomes. It is important to consider obesity in the donor-recipient match.

Abstract:
Abstract Allogeneic bone marrow chimeras were prepared using reciprocal combinations of AKR and C3H mice. When C3H mice were recipients, the number of thymocytes recoverable from such chimeras (C3H recipient chimeras) was small as compared with that from chimeras for which AKR mice were used as recipients (AKR recipient chimeras) regardless of donor strain. The thymocytes from C3H recipient chimeras showed a profound deficiency in generating proliferative responses to stimulation by anti-CD3 mAb (2C11) or anti-TCR (alpha, beta) mAb (H57-597), even though the expression of CD3 and TCR molecules fell within the same range as that in AKR recipient chimeras. Furthermore, after stimulation with immobilized 2C11, the proportion of IL-2R+ cells in the thymocytes from C3H recipient chimeras was much less than that in AKR recipient chimeras. However, no significant difference in proliferative responses to 2C11 plus PMA, in influx of Ca2+ after stimulation with 2C11 or IL-2 production in response to 2C11 plus PMA or PMA plus A23187 was demonstrated between C3H and AKR recipient chimeras. These findings suggest that the thymocytes from C3H recipient chimeras have a deficiency in the signal transduction system as compared with chimeras for which AKR mice are the recipients. The thymic stromal component involved in this difference in the C3H recipient chimeras is discussed.

Holm, Agnes. "The aid allocation dilemma : How to balance recipient vulnerability and recipient capacity?" Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-432696.

Abstract:
How bilateral aid donors allocate their adaptation aid is of importance since the most vulnerable to climate change often lack the capacities necessary to combat climate change impacts alone. However, from a donor perspective, the lack of institutional capacity implies that the allocated resources might be managed less effectively compared to in a context with ’good governance’. Thus, a dilemma regarding whether donors should prioritise aid effectiveness or recipient vulnerability rises. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the two bilateral donors Sweden and the United States, in order to examine their reasoning behind adaptation aid with regards to the mentioned dilemma between recipient vulnerability and recipient capacity. The study is conducted on a policy level by analysing policy material, including donor objectives and government policies and strategies, that concerns the two bilateral donors’ adaptation aid work. With the help of the theoretical framework, based on established development aid allocation models in an adaptation context, a text analysis systematically categorises the donors’ rationales and statements concerning adaptation aid and with regards to the dilemma. The main results of the text analysis confirm the dilemma’s complexity since both donors recognise and discuss its implications. Further, the results indicate a divide between the two bilateral aid donors as they tend to emphasise different positions toward adaptation aid. Moreover, in this relatively new field of study, the following essay contributes with an in-depth study on donor level, in contrast to previous research that provides mainly comprehensive and aggregate findings. Lastly, this study’s findings are of interest concerning adaptation aid’s increasing significance due to climate change and it also provides possible future research opportunities concerning adaptation aid allocation.

Abstract:
This project used data from the Dementia Progression Study, a longitudinal, population-based study based out of Cache County, Utah. Statistical models were used to examine the association between caregiver factors, the care environment, and cognitive outcomes in persons with dementia. Mediational analyses were also used to examine if the care environment, inferred for nutritional status, engagement in physical and cognitively stimulating activities, mediated the relationship between the closeness/caregiver coping strategies and cognition in persons with dementia. Results showed that closer caregiver-care recipient relationships were associated with better nutritional status and more engagement in number of cognitively stimulating activities as well as better cognitive scores (category verbal fluency, short-term auditory memory, auditory working memory, and immediate verbal memory). Coping strategies were not significantly associated with aspects of the care environment but Blames Self coping strategy was associated with better performance on a measure of verbal fluency, whereas Blames Others coping was associated with worse performance in confrontation naming. The care environment was not a mediator between caregiver factors and cognition, though if allowing for a broader criterion of statistical significance (.10), nutritional status mediated the relationship between closeness and the neuropsychological outcome, semantic fluency. The results of this project identify targets of intervention (caregiver-care recipient closeness and caregiver coping strategies) that may positively impact persons with dementia in possibly improving care-recipient outcomes.

Abstract:
Despite the recent introduction of a number of new and more potent anti-rejection drugs, the incidence of rejection and long-term graft survival remain unchanged. There remains a significant difference in long-term graft survival depending on the source of the donor. The purpose of this study was to examine gene expression in the transplanted kidney using microarray technology to identify potential biomarkers that could be used to predict and monitor graft function so that appropriate interventions could be made in the event of graft dysfunction. Over a 5 year period RNA was extracted from 144 donor kidneys that were transplanted. The initial attempts at probe preparation and hybridization were unsuccessful. This led to the development of a new strategy which involved the use of state-of-the-art microarray technology which embraced the advances realised with the completion of the human genome project. Microarray data was analysed using J-Express and Pathway studio. Significance analysis of microarray, hierachical clustering, gene ontology mapping and pathway analysis was performed. The identification of potential biomarkers that had previously been described by other authors validated this approach. In addition novel genes were identified that may have a role as biomarkers of graft function. Other potential biomarkers were identified that represented cellular processes that could be modified by therapeutic intervention thus possibly changing the clinical outcome or allowing monitoring of the success of therapy. Confirmation of previously described biomarkers and the identification of novel potential biomarkers has confirmed that gene expression profiling has a valuable role in identifying processes that are indicative of disease processes including those involved in kidney transplantation. Furthermore with the development of minimally invasive tests to measure these biomarkers, we can potentially change the natural history of the disease process, and hence, preserve graft function and possibly prolong life.

Abstract:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFASs, are highly fluorinated substances where the carbon chain is fully- or partly fluorinated. A functional group is coupled at the end of the carbon chain which gives PFASs their different properties. PFASs have been used in aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs) to decrease the surface tension of water and form a film on the fuel surfaces. AFFF is one of the main sources of PFASs pollution in the environment. A previous study has shown high PFASs concentrations in surface water in Lake Vänern. This study has analysed PFASs in sediment samples. The main detected PFASs was perfluorooctane sulfonate, PFOS, with concentrations below limit of detection to 51700 pg/g wet weight (ww). The compound detected in the highest concentration in Vissbäcken was PFOS at 7290 pg/g ww, this was followed by 6:2 fluorotelomersulfonate , 6:2FTS, at 516 pg/g ww. In outlet 4 (utlopp 4), PFOS had the highest concentration at 51800 pg/g ww, followed by perfluorohexane sulfonate, PFHxS, at 1790 pg/g ww. The only detected compound in the sediment cores was PFOS with approximately 100 pg/g ww. The high concentration of PFOS might be due to extensive use with subsequent release of firefighting foam in the area and degradation of other PFAS substances into PFOS.<br>Per-och polyfluoroalkylsubstanser, PFASs, är en grupp högfluorerade ämnen där kolkedjan är helt eller delvis fluorerad.

Abstract:
These essays consider various aspects of the access to finance to micro-entrepreneurs who remain outside the purview of the banking sector primarily due to lack of collateral. An innovative way to provide access to finance - microfinance - originated from Bangladesh and has since then spread to all over the world. Evidence points to micro-enterprises earning returns well above market interest rate. It is therefore puzzling that hardly any study has found a significant impact on various development indicators for households receiving a microcredit loan. This coupled with high indebtedness and defaults by borrowers resulting in the collapse of several microfinance organizations across the world has raised questions about the fundamentals of the microcredit model and led to a rethinking of microfinance at large. In line with this, we look at an alternative model of microcredit with zero interest rate and voluntary contributions being used by Akhuwat, a microfinance organization in Pakistan. Chapter 2 has details about this organization and chapter 3 about a telephone survey of the borrowers of the organization that was conducted to collect information in addition to that in the organization database. In chapter 4, the analysis of monthly data on voluntary contributions provide evidence that the organization is rewarding borrowers for their contributions by giving them repeat loans and that borrowers are strategically timing these voluntary contributions through their loan cycles to maximize impact. In the case of joint liability loans, borrowers in poorly performing groups make on average higher voluntary contributions, and voluntary contributions in a previous loan cycle correlate with borrower discipline in a subsequent loan cycle. Thus, voluntary contributions can signal borrower quality, and joint liability borrowers appear to be using them to signal their quality independently of their group. Microcredit loans were traditionally extended to groups of people who were held jointly liable for the payments of each other. However, there is no clear evidence that joint liability does lead to better borrower performance and recent years have seen a shift towards individual liability lending. In Chapter 5, utilizing the exogenous shift from individual to joint liability lending by a microfinance organization in Pakistan, we find evidence of significant improvement in borrower discipline. We also use the exogenous variation in number of months borrowers had till the expiry of their individual liability loans at the time of the shift to study the kind of groups they formed. Using this time that borrowers had as an instrument, we find that they are more likely to form groups with people they knew from before and met weekly. The time that borrower had to form group also correlated positively with borrower discipline. Chapter 6 investigates the impact on micro-entrepreneur households of unconditional transfers in a Randomized Control Trial setting. In a situation of no commitment, it looks at the second order effects on the household of an exogenous shock to the enterprise. Even with no repayment for principal or additional interest charge, there is no significant impact on the consumption and education expenditures of these households. We focus on the demographic and labour supply response and find that households of male and female owned enterprises adjust differently. Households of male run enterprises experienced a rise in fertility while those of women saw a decline in the number of other women working in the household and thereby in overall hours worked in the household. For male run enterprise households, there appears to be no substitution away from work towards leisure as the household feels richer. We did not find evidence that the rise in fertility is a pure income effect and so it appears to be associated with different choices made by the two genders when in charge of resources.

Abstract:
Abstract Lung donation is the most risky transplant procedures. With low survival rates, and poor acceptance of donated lungs, those in need of a lung transplant are at high risk of dying. One reason for poor outcomes is the lack of optimal match between donor and recipient when it comes to lung size and shape. Lungs that do not properly fit in the recipient’s chest cavity can fail to inflate fully and quickly start to deteriorate. In such patients, lung contusions can form, edema occurs in healthy lung tissue, and overall lung function declines. To improve patient outcomes after lung transplant, we describe here a developed a computational pipeline which enables donor lungs to be properly matched to recipients. This tool uses CT scans from both the donor and potential recipients to calculate how anatomically different the sets of lungs are, and therefore provide improved matches in both size and shape for the donor lungs.

Abstract:
Although brand placements can be seen more and more frequently in social media channels of so-called “influencers”, current brand placement research has rarely focused on the persuasive influence of these media characters. The "Balance Model of Product Placement Effects" of Russell and Stern (2006) began to integrate both, the recipient and the recipient's specific perception of the media context, into brand placement research. The result of these considerations is a triadic connection between the recipient, the acting media characters and the placed brands. Adressing this, the following study investigates the mediating influence of cognitive phenomenon of parasocial interactions to an influencer of a YouTube make-up tutorial as well as her specific attitude/valence towards the brands in her immediate context. Brand perception, purchase intention and actual purchase of the presented brand were measured as dependent variables of advertising effectiveness.

Abstract:
The linguistic research of (the new) media so far has mainly focused on the analysis of content from broadcasters – people publishing on the Internet in order to convince the potential recipients to enter the website, read articles, explore the website as well as return after leaving it – in exchange for the material or financial benefit. Several years of observation of a variety of text types existing in the media shows that not only texts from broadcasters make it possible to notice and maintain this attention of recipients. Nowadays, similarly as in marketing and advertising, in the media (but not only there) the essential and productive content comes from the recipient. The subject of this quantitative and qualitative linguistic analysis is the title testimonial as a rapidly growing persuasive (promotional) trend in (new) media and a response to the challenges of the modern society.
