Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This book contains 23 chapters divided into seven parts. Part I reviews the key hypotheses in invasion ecology that invoke biotic interactions to explain aspects of plant invasion dynamics; and reviews models, theories and hypotheses on how invasion performance and impact of introduced species in recipient ecosystems can be conjectured according to biotic interactions between native and non-native species. Part II deals with positive and negative interactions in the soil. Part III discusses mutualistic interactions that promote plant invasions. Part IV describes antagonistic interactions that hinder plant invasions, while part V presents the consequences of plant invasions for biotic interactions among native species. In part VI, novel techniques and experimental approaches in the study of plant invasions are shown. In the last part, biotic interactions and the management of ecosystems invaded by non-native plants are discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the statistical modelling of ‘failed changes’, i.e., changes that reverse instead of going to completion. The chapter compares two models: a symmetrical model derived by assuming that a failed change is represented by the first derivative of a successful change (Postma 2010) and an asymmetrical model derived by multiplying two successful changes together (i.e., by having a second change bleed the environment for the first change). A case study in the development of ‘to’ in the history of English ditransitives is used to argue for the asymmetrical model, where the two changes are (1) the realization of dative case as ‘to’ across the board, and (2) a grammar where ‘to’ is the default realization of dative case, but a null realization is used in recipient–theme contexts (e.g., ‘I gave John the ball’).

Vanderschraaf, Peter. Justice as Mutual Advantage? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199832194.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Necessary and sufficient conditions are proposed for characterizing the general theory of justice as mutual advantage. Justice as mutual advantage has a distinguished history, but is thought to be false because according to this theory vulnerable members of society are apparently owed no benefits of justice. A repeated Provider-Recipient game model shows by example that justice as mutual advantage systems can require that the vulnerable receive benefits, refuting the Vulnerability Objection. Conditions for defining the community of inclusion in justice as mutual advantage systems are proposed in terms of salience. A justice as mutual system is defined as a system of conventions for sharing the cooperative surplus generated from compliance with these conventions that is Baseline Consistent or stable with respect to possible renegotiation in case the community experiences certain changes in their circumstances.

Nadler, Arie. The Human Essence in Helping Relations. Edited by Martijn van Zomeren and John F. Dovidio. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190247577.013.7.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the human essence in helping relations, with a particular focus on belongingness, independence, and status. It first reviews research on seeking and receiving help, paying attention to how receiving assistance from others leads to positive and negative consequences for the recipient: positive reactions are expressed in feelings of gratitude, while negative consequences come in the form of threat to self-esteem. The chapter proceeds by discussing the dynamics of inequality in interpersonal and intergroup helping, along with the autonomy versus dependency nature of help (i.e., solutions vs. tools). It explores how generosity breeds prestige within the group. It continues to strategic aspects in intergroup helping relations, considers the ways in which helping relations constitute subtle mechanisms to maintain or challenge existing structural inequality (i.e., the Intergroup Helping as Status Relations model, IHSR). It concludes by explaining the unique human essence of helping relations between individuals and groups.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 follows Anna Morandi’s activities after her husband’s death, reconstructing the setting in which she consolidated her role as a celebrity and recipient of papal patronage. It situates Morandi’s waxworks within a diversified world of wax modelling that was characterized by patterns of continuity and discontinuity among devotional, artistic, and anatomical displays. Moreover, it reads the pope’s patronage of Morandi against the backdrop of his concerns for the authenticity of claims of divine inspiration in the context of saint-making. Likewise, it juxtaposes Morandi’s activities with those of Laura Chiarini, a Bolognese nun whose abilities as a wax modeller were taken to be the measure of her divine inspiration. It suggests that while Chiarini’s wax modelling performances represented a model of inspiration that was carefully scrutinized, Morandi’s activities as an anatomist and a trustworthy modeller of nature instantiated an example of female accomplishment that met with papal approval.

Hughes, Jessica. Tiny and Fragmented Votive Offerings from Classical Antiquity. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190614812.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses tiny and fragmented votive offerings from the ancient Greco-Roman world. The first half of the chapter surveys different kinds of votive fragmentation, ranging from objects that were physically ruptured before dedication, to conceptually ‘partial’ offerings like tithes and first fruits. I argue that the deliberate or accidental breakage of votives often paradoxically increased the value and meaning of the offering in the eyes of the community and recipient deity. I also introduce the possibility that all votives might be seen as fragments, insofar as they constitute part of a worshiper’s property or converted wealth (an idea inherent in the ancient concepts of dekatē and aparchē). The second half of the chapter then focuses on one particular type of fragmented votive—the model body part. Tiny body parts made in clay and metal began to be dedicated in the Middle Minoan and then the Archaic Greek periods, and continued to appear alongside the life-sized (or near life-sized) anatomical votives that were a feature of later Hellenistic and Roman ritual. I explore some of the possible resonances of these votives’ tiny sizes, emphasizing how far these miniature objects facilitate (or even demand) intimate touch and handling. Finally, I explore the possibility that the miniature votives in Hellenistic and Roman times may have harkened back to the diminutive offerings of earlier periods, thus functioning as symbols of cultural memory, and tiny generators of nostalgia.

Full text
Abstract:
Premature cardiovascular disease is much more common in renal transplant recipients than the general population, although less common than in patients relying on maintenance haemodialysis. Cardiovascular disease in renal transplant recipients differs from the traditional atherosclerotic model. Although ordinary risk factors such as age, gender, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking still apply, others such as left ventricular hypertrophy and uraemic cardiomyopathy are relevant. Transplantation also adds specific risks such as immunosuppressive therapies and acute rejection. Understanding and managing the cardiovascular risk in this population is limited by a lack of large-scale randomized trials. The approach to managing the cardiovascular risk profile of these patients should be multifactorial and start even before transplantation.

Yao, Xine. Disaffected. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022107.

Full text
Abstract:
In Disaffected Xine Yao explores the racial and sexual politics of unfeeling—affects that are not recognized as feeling—as a means of survival and refusal in nineteenth-century America. She positions unfeeling beyond sentimentalism's paradigm of universal feeling. Yao traces how works by Herman Melville, Martin R. Delany, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and Sui Sin Far engaged major sociopolitical issues in ways that resisted the weaponization of white sentimentalism against the lives of people of color. Exploring variously pathologized, racialized, queer, and gendered affective modes like unsympathetic Blackness, queer female frigidity, and Oriental inscrutability, these authors departed from the values that undergird the politics of recognition and the liberal project of inclusion. By theorizing feeling otherwise as an antisocial affect, form of dissent, and mode of care, Yao suggests that unfeeling can serve as a contemporary political strategy for people of color to survive in the face of continuing racism and white fragility.
